Volume 1 The First Cry Chapter 8

Because the environment of Ranxue in the fourteenth year of Tenpo is very bad, but it has led to more unity of Orchid scholars, so Ogata Hongan is very kind to Naohide, a disciple of the same disciple Ito Genpu, when Naohide said that he would study at Shishisai Juku for seven days, Mr. Hongan said that he was very welcome, and said that if he did not dislike the simplicity, he could stay overnight, and Naohide bluntly agreed to come down and express his gratitude.

The teachers who run private schools are called "juku masters", and there can be other teachers, all of whom are samurai, scholars, or doctors of a certain reputation. In private schools, there is generally a free style of study, regardless of the age of the student, regardless of the identity and background, as long as the student is voluntary, you can enroll, and most of them are self-made by the students (the later Fuso Student Union was also affected by this, and the power in the school is very large, and the student activities are basically managed by the student union in ordinary times), and the student leader is called "Jukutou", and the students are jointly elected and then can take office with the consent of the school owner.

The difference between a private school and a terakoya is that the private school was similar to today's adult vocational school, while the terakoya was aimed at three to five years of education for children aged seven or eight, similar to elementary and junior high schools.

Because Confucianism prevailed, the atmosphere at that time made samurai and scholars ashamed to talk about money, so private schools did not take the initiative to collect tuition, but students can take the initiative to pay for it, and the owners of the school generally have a main business, or do samurai have a fortune, or open a clinic to treat diseases and practice medicine, such as the future Shenghaizhou's private school and iron cannon, it is said that the sales are not bad, so the private school generally does not have high requirements for students' tuition, and the students are mainly attracted to the eye.

Some poor students use desks during the day to attend classes, and at night the desks are set aside and the teacher acts as a dormitory. Naoxiu and the locals also used their simple luggage to mix with some shabby tatami mats for the night.

Of the two two-story buildings, the first floor of the front building is a clinic, the second floor is a classroom, the first floor of the back building is a living room, a study, a servant's room, a kitchen, and a utility room, and the second floor is Mr. Hong'an's residence. Tekijuku teaches students medicine and Western studies, where medicine is the main profession and Western scholarship is aimed at cultivating a knowledge base and vision.

At Tekijuku, Mr. Hongan can only give lectures in his free time when he is practicing medicine, so students usually study on their own or learn from each other, and sometimes some students also accompany Mr. Hongan to accumulate experience.

Breakfast is rice porridge and pickles, the students use the kitchen to make their own, Naoxiu has paid for three people's food for seven days yesterday, so he had a breakfast with a group of people.

The head of the school announced today's plan: self-study in the morning and a lecture by Mr. Hongan in the afternoon.

In the morning, Mr. Hongan was busy, and the three of them could only study with everyone. There are mostly manuscripts of books in Shijuku, one volume of the Lanri dictionary "Dao Translation of Falma" is quite old, and there are two sets of four volumes of the introductory book "Lanxue Ladder", "Harmony of Orchid Materia Medica", "Enlightenment of the Compendium of Materia Medica", "Cardinal Lan Fang", and "Essentials of Internal Medicine in the West". According to Jukuto, there are still some books that need to be taught separately by Mr. Hongan according to the level of the students, and Naohide estimates that they are the "New Book of Disintegration" and "Dirty Chronicles" on human anatomy, as well as some encyclopedias of the Rankoku that he collects.

Naohide, Toranosuke, and Gakujiro are all literate, but the Lan (Dutch) language is only Naohide studied in Ito Genpu's Elephant Senju School for a few months, although Lan and English are relatively close, but just like the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese, anyway, Naohide is now so-so and barely get started.

Some students read books aloud to everyone for a while, and the head of the school organized everyone to discuss some issues, and then they studied in groups. Naohide also taught Toranosuke and Gakujiro some Lan pronunciation and vocabulary, and it was soon time for lunch and break.

In the afternoon, Mr. Hong'an explained some grammars in the second volume of "The Ladder of Lan Xue", the preparation method of a medicine in "Cardinal Lan Fang", and a disease in the "Essentials of Internal Medicine in Western Theory", and then answered some questions from the students.

After today's teaching is almost over, Mr. Hongan is quite high-natured, so I asked Naohide to introduce himself to everyone and explain what he learned in Mr. Hyunpo's Xiangxian school.

"The clumsy one is Naohide Hori from Edo, these two Takemae Toranosuke and Nakamura Gakujiro are the companions of the next, please take care of them in the future", Naohide, Toranosuke, and Gakujiro all bowed slightly. The students present also returned the courtesy.

Naohide briefly introduced the lessons he had learned at the Elephant Senjuku for most of the year, and then talked about the latest "antidiarrheal dispersion" and "plaster reconstruction".

Ogata Hongan was originally sitting there and listening with a smile, but the more he listened, the more solemn his expression became, "Naohide-kun, I understand that the antidiarrheal san is a good medicine for diarrhea, and it is indeed very effective in some symptoms, so I also bought some from Edo here." But this is the first time I've heard of the plaster cast, so can you explain it in detail, if you don't take the liberty of it."

"Sir is too polite, Mr. Xuan Pu said that you will definitely ask him about the progress there, and he has instructed me in advance to show you the plaster fixation limb surgery, please give me more advice."

He began to wash his hands with a wooden basin of water, then washed Gakujiro's left forearm with salt water, dried it and wrapped it with a thick cotton cloth, and then used a large wooden basin to bring warm water, and then took out the plaster powder from the luggage and carefully smeared it on the linen strips, and repeated the eight cotton strips, Naohide explained the details that needed to be paid attention to while demonstrating, and then Torajiro soaked the cotton strips in warm water, and immediately took them out and handed them to Naohide after not bubbling, and Naohide wrapped his right hand from the elbow forward and smoothed it with his left hand in the opposite direction, winding eight layers in a row. Finally, Naohide uses a cotton belt to hang Gakujiro's left hand around his neck.

"Sir, after a while, the plaster will initially harden, and then it will be very strong in one day, and it will be removed in a month for children, and three months for adults, as long as the bones are grown, it can be removed."

In the original world of Naoxiu, the winding plaster bandage was invented in 1851 by the Lan military doctor Antonius Mathijsen, until the first human landing on the moon in 1969, the winding plaster bandage was the only external fixation material for fractures, although the problems of bulky, stuffy and difficult nursing have not been well solved.

The technique that transcends the times made Ogata Hongan look overjoyed, "Okay, good, Naohide, can you write these down?" ”

"Sir, Mr. Hyun Pu's summary is in the box that was handed over yesterday."

Ogata Koan touched his head awkwardly, "I was too busy yesterday, I'll look for it." By the way, as a token of appreciation, the three of you will have dinner with me tonight."

After Mr. Hong'an left, the classmates rushed up and asked a lot of questions, and Naoxiu answered for a while and said, "Mr. will definitely be more detailed and accurate than me in the future", and the classmates dispersed.

The three of them had a dinner with Mr. Hong'an, although it was not very sumptuous but it could be seen that the dishes were very attentive, Mr. Hong'an was very enthusiastic during the banquet, and the atmosphere of the whole dinner was very good.

As a result, the three of them successfully studied at Shijuku for seven days, during which they learned some Lan language, Lan medicine and Western encyclopedias. Naohide also took the time to visit the Nakatsu Domain's Kurayashiki in Osaka, and learned that Fukuzawa Hyaksuke had died of illness in the seventh year of Tenbo, after which Mrs. Fukuzawa had returned to the Nakatsu Domain's hometown with her children.

On the eighth day, Naohide and others said goodbye to Mr. Hong'an's family, Mr. Hong'an's oldest child was only six years old, and he had a good time with Naohide in the past two days, holding Naohide and not letting him go, Naohide had to give the Edo wind chimes on his luggage to the children, and promised to come to see them again the next year, before leaving in the reluctant eyes of the children.

Naoxiu looked back at Shishi Shojuku, and didn't know if there would be a chance to consult Mr. Hongan again in the future.

In the 2nd year of Honghua (1845), as Hong'an's reputation grew, new students came to study under him every day, and the private school in Washimachi became increasingly crowded, so he purchased new land from a merchant in Koshomachi (later Kitahama 3-chome, Chuo-ku, Osaka) and moved Tokijuku there.

On November 7, 1849 (December 21, 1849), Ogata Koan opened a "pox ban" in Furute-cho (later Michishu-cho, Chuo-ku, Osaka) to promote the cowpox method that had recently been introduced to Fuso by Otto Gottlieb Mohnike. In the third year of Kaei (1850), at the invitation of his hometown of the Ashimori Domain, Mr. Koan opened the "Ashimori Acne Removal Hall" to promote the cowpox method. He had been working hard to make the "Acne Removal Hall" a recognized treatment center for the cowpox method in Fuso (because the cowpox method was safer than the human pox method), and finally on the 20th day of the fourth month of Ansei (June 5, 1858), Hong'an's smallpox prevention activities were recognized by the shogunate, and the cowpox method became the standard.

Later, a large number of famous students came out of the school, such as Yukichi Fukuzawa, Keisuke Otori, Saunai Hashimoto, Masajiro Omura, Nagayo Shosai, Tsunemin Sano, Takamatsu Lingun, etc., all of whom were outstanding talents who were active in the era of the end of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration, among which Yukichi Fukuzawa was known as "Fuso Voltaire".

In the second year of Kahoega (1849), Mr. Ogata published the 17-volume General Theory of Pathology, which was the first book on pathology in Fuso.

In the fourth year of Ansei (1857), Mr. Ogata translated and published the "Legacy of the Fushi Experience", which consists of 9 volumes and 30 volumes.

In 1858, when there was a cholera epidemic in the fifth year of Ansei (said to have been caused by Westerners after the founding of the country), he published a book on cholera treatment under the title "Quasi-Cure for Tiger Dysentery".

Although I am reluctant to give up, there is always a parting in life.

The last time Naohide did Hiragaki back to the ship, he had established a relationship with the merchants of the Osaka 24 Group Asking House, and he didn't give a lot of fares, and the bow of the ship also had a good impression of him, so the businessman Sukezaburo as the owner of the ship also had a good impression of him, and with his help, the head of the Changzhou wealthy merchant Shiraishi Shoichiro promised to take the three of Naohide to Maseki.

(The shogunate's "Decree on the Dissolution of Guilds" issued in recent years dissolved a number of guild organizations, including the Edo 10 and Osaka 24 groups, but the merchants still colluded with each other in private, but they did it more secretly.) )

Under the long sky and blue sea, a small sailboat sailed straight to the place where the wind rose at the end of the shogunate.
