Volume 1 The First Cry Chapter 28 Bones Everywhere
Naohide didn't expect Yokoi Xiaonan's mind to be so open now, and according to the future trajectory, Mr. Xiaonan still holds the view of closing the country and destroying the country. But after thinking about it, it will be ten years before the black ship comes, during which Lanxue has not yet formed a large-scale head-on conflict with Confucianism, and Mr. Xiao Nan did not reject Lanxue later, and he has always adhered to mercantilism, so it is not surprising that he is welcomed.
In the 10th year of Tenpo (1839), when the Tenpo Murderous Rebellion (1833-1839) was still not over, Yokoi returned to the Higo Domain after studying in Edo and formed the "Shigaku Party" with the training hall of the domain school mainly students.
Nagaoka and others, the second head of the family, supported his reform proposals, but the upper-class samurai led by the conservative pen head Matsu-Isado opposed it, and Yokoi Konan was forced to resign this year.
Now the scale of Si Shixuan is still small, the size of the cat adds up to only four or five, Mr. Xiao Nan took a look, then don't give a lecture, Zhixiu will leave in two days, and let Zhixiu tell you "The Wealth of Nations" and "Population Theory" in these two days.
Zhixiu gave a two-day lecture at Si Shixuan, won the title of visiting professor, and received countless grievances from students. When, learning is not an easy task, the students on Zhixiu's side are better, the students of Si Shixuan have received Confucian education since childhood, emphasizing righteousness over profit, and instinctively opposing the promotion of the status of businessmen who will inevitably lead to businessmen.
Fortunately, Si Shixuan's head Defu Yijing expressed his support for this, and Zhixiu Xin said, no wonder you will make a fortune in the spinning industry in the future, you have long had the idea of heavy business, but there is a problem with your family's education, and you will become stupid if you read too much of "Fusang Foreign History". However, there are still more than 20 years, and then Luhua must become the mainstream, and it is impossible to deviate.
Naoxiu also talked about some of the dangers of heavy merchant.
First of all, we talked about the Great Famine in Bengal (1769-1773), because the English forced the local people to grow high value-added crops such as opium poppy and indigo, and implemented cruel tax policies, which led to a lack of food at the time of the natural disaster, which killed about 10 million people and reduced the local population by one-third. As soon as the murderous work of Tianbao subsided, everyone present trembled when they heard all kinds of tragic situations.
It also describes the economic damage caused by the English importation of textiles, cotton cloth and cotton yarn to the Tianzhu continent.
At the end of the 17th century, Tianzhu accounted for a quarter of the world's cotton cloth exports, but by the middle of the 19th century, Tianzhu mainland cotton cloth was already dependent on imports.
In 1765, the English James Hargreaves invented a new spinning machine, which he named Jenny after his daughter.
From 1698 to 1712, the English Thomas Seville and Thomas Newcomen made the early industrial steam engine, and between 1765 and 1790, the English James Watt made a series of inventions, such as the separation condenser, the setting of the insulation layer outside the cylinder, the lubrication piston with oil, the planetary gear, the parallel motion linkage mechanism, the centrifugal governor, the throttle valve, the pressure gauge, etc., and finally produced a practical industrial steam engine, the efficiency is about 3 times that of the early steam engine. Watt's design for a steam engine was patented in England in 1769.
The strong power of the steam engine and the high efficiency of the Jenny spinning machine have greatly reduced the production cost of English cotton cloth and cotton yarn, and the spinning industry has developed very rapidly.
By the second half of the 18th century, England no longer imported cotton cloth from the Tianzhu continent, but only imported the raw material cotton, which was made into a large amount of cheap cotton cloth and sold back to the Tianzhu continent. At the same time, the British mainland raised the import tariff on cotton cloth from the Tianzhu continent to 20%, and at the same time reduced the import tax on the cotton cloth of the colonial Tianzhu continent, or even exempted from duty, and also stipulated that the local sales of Tianzhu textiles must pay extremely high trade taxes.
From 1818 to 1836, the amount of cotton yarn exported from England to the Tianzhu continent increased by 5,200 times. In 1814~1835, the cotton cloth imported into England by Tianzhu Colony decreased from 1.25 million to more than 300,000 horses, while the cotton fabric imported into Tianzhu Colony increased from 1 million yards to more than 51 million yards.
(1 yard = 0.9144 meters, the horse is a unit of cloth, the length is different, here according to the four zhang for the horse, the tailoring ruler 1 foot = 35.5 cm, 1 horse is 14.2 meters.) )
Under the double blow of English commodity dumping and brutal rule, the cotton weaving industry in the Tianzhu colony declined sharply, and the population of Dhaka, once the famous center of the textile industry, fell from 150,000 to just over 30,000, and countless craftsmen went bankrupt and fled Dhaka because of hunger.
Lord Cavendish Bentinck, the then governor of Tianzhu, also had to admit that "the bones of the cotton weavers made the Tianzhu Plain white".
(Lord William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, Governor of Bengal from 1823 to 1833, Governor of Tianzhu from 1833 to 1835 after Count Amsterd, left office in March 1835, died in Paris in 1839.) )
In the future, Tianzhu's textile industry tried to revive itself, but was defeated by a tariff order from the British colonial government.
Dawa, a cotton merchant in Tianzhu Mumbai, made a fortune from the cotton trade destined for Europa. In 1856 he bought textile equipment from England to build a factory to produce cotton yarn and cotton cloth, and by 1862 his mill was already quite large. Under his influence, the number and scale of self-built textile factories in Tianzhu continued to expand, from 338,000 spindles in 1861 to 593,000 in 1874, and the local textile industry could not only satisfy the local market, but also have a surplus for export. At this time, the British colonial government formulated a tariff bill, stipulating that the import tax on cotton yarn in Tianzhu Continent was zero, and at the same time reducing the import tax on cotton cloth again.
Originally, the textile industry of Tianzhu Continent was bound to collapse under the blow of this decree, but because of long-term economic plunder, Tianzhu Continent had a currency devaluation in the late 19th century, which hindered and delayed the dumping of English textiles.
But in the end, the local textile industry in Tianzhu Continent could not escape the fate of collapse.
After many twists and turns, Tianzhu textile industry has become a symbol of the suffering of the people of Tianzhu, and the heroes of Tianzhu in later generations are calling on the people to rebel against the British colonial government with the image of hand-cranked clay spinning wheels.
In order to prevent accidents, Naohide also told the famous story of Amikant being fooled.
Amikant was a wealthy merchant in Bengal, trusted by the Mughal ruler of Bengal at the time, Maharaja Siraj, and was appointed as an important official, but because of the promise of a large amount of wealth, he was bribed by Cliff, the general of the English East India Company at the time, to sell information and take action to delay the Mughal Dynasty in the decisive Battle of Plassey (June 23, 1757), and the English people later reversed themselves and mocked Amikant that the previous promise was a hoax, and Amikant went crazy and died.
Before the Battle of Plassey, the English had only scattered coastal colonies on the Tianzhu Continent, and after this battle, the English began to annex the entire Tianzhu Continent.
Naohide initially popularized the concepts of industry, market, trade, tariffs, currency depreciation, and trade equilibrium, and did not expect them to be clear immediately, mainly to provoke thinking.
At present, trade between the feudal domains was carried out through the shogunate, and the trade centers were the major cities directly under the shogunate, such as Edo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nagasaki, and the trade between the feudal domains was controlled by the privileged merchants of the shogunate in these cities.
Although Yokoi Konan's reform strategy "Current Affairs Policy" pointed out the benefits of developing domestic production and commercial trade, it was not thorough, and the focus of trade with the shogunate and various feudal domains was not clear, which could not offset the concerns of the retainers about agriculture-oriented, and the idea of meritocracy touched the interests of the upper samurai.
Naohide hopes that Mr. Konan will think holistically, and in the future, he will be able to make achievements in the Higo and Echizen domains, expand his influence, and the two feudal kingdoms will have better economic strength during the storm at the end of the Edo period, and the lives of the lords will not be affected as violently as before. At the same time, I also hope that he can influence more people to understand the meaning of industry and commerce, and work together to overcome the difficulties after the founding of the country.
Two days passed in a flash, and everyone had a sense of unfinished business. Mr. Xiao Nan asked Zhixiu to visit more in the future, and at the same time asked Zhixiu to translate "The Wealth of Nations" and "Population Theory" into books, and send them to him to study no matter what.
Good people have good rewards, and Naohide, who came to deliver knowledge, discovered a wild Shota - Hikojiro Kawagami. Hikojiro Kawagami was only nine years old at this time, with a piercing hairstyle, the hair on his forehead just left on his eyebrows, short hair, and very cute eyebrows.
Before retiring, Yokoi Konan formed the "Practical Study Party" in the practice hall of the domain school, and Miyabe Dingzo, a training course for Yamaga Ryu Soldiers, also participated. It just so happened that the palace department brought the lower-ranking feudal lords Genbei Kawaue and Sasuke Komori to visit Sishiken and catch up with Naohide's lecture, and Mr. Konan strongly persuaded them to participate.
Nine-year-old Hikojiro Kawagami also joined in the fun with his father and adoptive father, and the staggering appearance of being sleepy because he couldn't understand made everyone laugh.
Naohide likes children very much, and he is also very childlike, so he took out maltose and became friends with Hikojiro.
Miyabe Dingzang, who is only 23 years old this year, is a cheerful person, with a fierce expression, bright eyes, and full of charm. Although he showed a lot of disdain for Naoxiu's lectures at the beginning because he liked Fuso Chinese studies and Shinto, first, he was still young and not as stubborn as he was later, and second, Mr. Xiaonan usually tried his best to instill mercantile ideas, and later he actually listened with great interest.
Genbei Kawakami and Sadasuke Komori looked reserved, but they also persevered until the end of the lecture.
Naohide's favorite among these people is Hikojiro Kawagami, who is the prototype of the future heartthrob "Scarlet Village Kenshin".
Hikojiro Kawagami, the name is Genmei, the tea number is Hikosai, and Hikojiro is his nickname. His biological father, Sadasuke Komori, is a low-level samurai ashigaru. Hikojiro passed to the Kawagami family when he was very young, and became the adopted son of Genbei, and the Kawagami family is also ashigaru. In his teenage years, he became a low-ranking tea boy of the Hizen Domain, and later rose to the rank of high-ranking tea man, "Tea Owner".
The little radish head will be cruel in the future, because of the death of the palace Dingzang and get rid of the feudal revenge, Shengsheng used a sword to cut out the murderous name of the world's four major people - the human beheading is the saying of Fusang, which means executioner.
In the future, Miyabe Dingzo is Hikojiro's art of war teacher, and he has always taken care of him in his official career. Later, Miyabe Dingzo was actively involved in the rebellion of King Koto, and was seriously injured in the Ikedaya Incident and committed suicide, and it was rumored that Sakuma Zozan was behind the Ikedaya Incident. When the news reached Hizen, Hikojiro resolutely left the feudal domain and went to Kyoto to avenge his teacher, and assassinated the ministers and shogunate samurai who held the founding theory everywhere.
Katsu Kaishu once recalled that Hikosai Kawagami was a brutal samurai, but Katsu's brother-in-law, Sakuma Zozan, was assassinated by Hikojiro, and the brutality is debatable.
There were no rumors of Hikojiro carrying out the Heavenly Punishment operation before Miyabe Dingzo's death, but his assassination style was indeed more brutal later. It is said that at a gathering in Kyoto, the people shouted and scolded a minister's retainers, saying that the assassination had failed many times, and only Hikojiro was silent, and after a while he withdrew and cut off the minister's retainer and took the head back to show the public, and everyone at the party was very shocked.
Hikojiro's most famous assassination target was Sakuma Zozan. Sakuma was very famous at that time, and he was also famous for his swordsmanship, and he often rode around Kyoto alone, and no one succeeded in assassinating him. It is rumored that Hikojiro met Sakuma by chance, Hikojiro was short, and the person who cut the horse directly could not exert his strength, so he first suddenly cut the horse, and then beheaded Sakuma with a knife when he fell off the horse.
After killing Sakuma Zoyama, Hikosai Kawagami sealed the sword. It is rumored that he has to take revenge on his teacher, and his wish has been fulfilled, so he sealed the knife. There is also a theory that he suddenly regretted the assassination, and it is rumored that Kawagami Hikosai himself explained the reason for sealing the knife: "In the past, killing people was like cutting a doll, and I didn't feel anything." However, this time, when I killed Sakuma Zozan, I felt for the first time, 'I'm killing someone', and I couldn't help but stand on end all of a sudden. Maybe this man is really a masterpiece of a generation......"
It is rumored that Hikosai Kawagami was a very calm person when he was not involved in the assassination, and he was very gentle and polite to people, just like Okita Soji. Naohide has always felt that there are many people at the end of the curtain who are involuntarily caught up in the storm, because of the head of the family, because of relatives, friends, teachers, and conflicts because of simple ideals, this is the helplessness and sadness of the little people.
It is said that after the success of the Restoration, Hikosai Kawagami went to the residence of the Minister Sanjo Minomi every day and respectfully asked, "When will you be ruined?" Believing that he could save Fuso, he carried out the assassination campaign, and could not understand the reason why the Westerners continued to show off their military power in Fuso after the success of the Restoration, and he was greatly puzzled by the fact that the lives of many civilians were still difficult, and he was later arrested for the Atago Tsusu Incident. On December 3, 1871, the fourth year of the Meiji era, Hikosai was executed at the age of Chinese New Year's Eve. Executed by the forces he has always supported, what was Hikosai thinking before he died? No one can solve this mystery.
