Chapter 7: The Battle of Hakodate
On the morning of July 7, 1858, five warships of Lucia arrived at Hakokan.
In fact, the Lucian naval army was relatively weak among the Western powers:
The Crimean War of 1853-1856 showed the backwardness of the Rusian naval forces - there were few steam warships, the artillery was old, and the most advanced shells were only spherical Nasimov explosive shells.
But Fuso has been weak for a long time, and this "weak" sail squadron is still not something that the small Hakodate can withstand.
The ensuing Battle of Hakodate amply proves this:
Even if the Edo Clipper arrived at the port a day in advance, it was difficult for the clever woman to cook without rice, and Hori Toshiki and others were still very powerless to deal with it, and it could even be said that they were in chaos.
As the Hakodate commissioner, Hori Riki personally came to the door to ask for help from the rice people at that time, but the rice leader in Hakodate refused to help turn around. Moreover, all the Mi ships then left the port urgently, which only exacerbated the turmoil in Hakodate, not only did the other ships run out overnight, but then there were even residents of Fuso who fled by land overnight.
By the time the Ruthia warship really appeared, the morale of the Hakodate defenders had been almost tossed by their own people.
Speaking of which, the number of Fuso in this battle did not suffer:
Lucia's strength is five warships, including 2 third-class sail battleships, 1 fifth-class sail cruiser and 2 armed supply ships, with a total of 186 guns and a crew of more than 1,530 people.
After the general mobilization of Hakodate, the number of people in the group was about 2,500 - more than 500 people at the Hakodate Commission, and 1,000 people from each of the two daimyo who were ordered to guard Hakodate.
In fact, since last autumn, Hakodate has strengthened its vigilance for fear of Lucia's revenge, but because of the family's weak background, although it has been planned for nearly a year, the result is still unsatisfactory:
Of the more than 2,000 people, only the shogunate's clan used homemade rifled rifles, the Tsugaru family guarding the inner and outer Odaiba and the Matsumae clan guarding the Hakodate, and all of these two clans used smoothbore flintlock pistols - that's it, it was the result of the shogunate's support, otherwise the ashigaru would probably still use cold weapons and arquebuses!
As for the artillery, except for the front-loading rifled guns and the Napoleonic cannons sent by Edo, the other large barrels were old bronze cannons with questionable combat effectiveness.
It stands to reason that the Fuso side has good combat power on paper, but everyone, including Hakodate Governor Hori Toshiki, has little confidence - their own family knows about their own affairs, let alone the samurai, and even the townspeople know about it, otherwise they wouldn't have escaped overnight.
There are several well-known weaknesses:
The first is that people can't make it.
This is not to say that there was any disagreement between the shogunate and the two daimyos. On the contrary, both in business and in private, the relationship between the Hakodate government and the samurai of Tsugaru and Matsumae who assisted in the garrison was good.
But it's useless to have a good relationship - a good relationship is a personal relationship, and the three families all attach great importance to respect and inferiority, and the level of the samurai's family determines the status, and as for ability, it is under the family character.
This can be a good one!
The higher the status of the samurai lord, the more attention is paid to elegant things, even if there are a few who like the art of war, there are many soldiers on paper.
Moreover, although Lanxue has flourished in recent years, and the Western art of war has slowly spread, after all, the time is still shallow, so there are not many talents who are proficient in military situation.
But even if someone is proficient in the Western art of war, it is difficult to promote it.
Take Takeda Kaizaburo, who is familiar with the art of war, for example, he is a professor of various arts in Hakodate, and it stands to reason that he should have a great say in the military situation.
But that's not the case at all:
For example, Takeda had a good personal relationship with the Matsumae family, but when it came to the Western art of war, he was also right - many samurai in the Matsumae family were disciples of Ichikawa Kachigaku, and Ichikawa of the Takasaki Domain was known as the world's three major military masters at this time. Therefore, whenever Takeda mentioned the reform of the military system, the samurai of the Matsumae family would compare his statement with that taught by Ichikawa, and once they found a difference, they would ignore it.
And this is still a face-saving approach.
There are samurai who don't give face, and they directly refute Takeda to his face, saying how my ancestors are - and I can't take this sentence, even if I say euphemistically "this time and that time", but it is also a refutation of the glory of other people's ancestors.
As a result, although they were armed with new Western weapons, they still practiced on their own, and most of them practiced bows and arrows, wooden guns, and long knives assiduously.
In fact, this is not the most headache for Hakodate Honori and the others - do you think that after all, these people are still practicing their skills.
More samurai don't even practice cold weapons, and they just drink and play every day.
You must know that there are a lot of Ainu natives in the box house.,When the lone ashigaru and the natives clash.,It's not uncommon to be beaten and the head of the rat runs.,So the combat effectiveness of the fan group is really suspicious in the eyes of everyone.。
Secondly, people are poor and short of breath.
Western ordnance requires a lot of practice to get used to, but in this case, it costs a lot of shells, buckshot, and black medicine. However, although the Hakodate Office has inputs such as ironworks and carboniferous mines, there are more places to spend money, and large-scale drills are still unaffordable.
The shogunate's office was still like this, not to mention the two families who had less money in comparison, so Western weapons were mostly deaf ears - ornaments.
I usually don't practice temporary cramming, and fools know that it's unreliable.
But these are nothing compared to this - the biggest problem of Hakodate is that there is no right-hand man!
There were warships, and the shogunate deliberately allocated two large ships and four small ships.
However, compared with the "big ships" built by the shogunate, they became small ships - Fuso's current self-built Western warships have more than 4,000 koku (more than 500 tons), while most of the Westerners' capital ships are nearly 20,000 koku (more than 2,000 tons). This gap is nearly three times, and the result of the fight can be imagined.
My family knows my own business.
Therefore, not only did the people of Hakodate know that they can't be defeated, but the government office and the Goban family also know about the danger.
In view of the fact that the rice people refused to help turn around, after discussion, Hakodate pursued Hori Rixi's resolution to "strike later" - saying that it was a late strike, but in fact it was lying down and being ridiculed.
At the request of Hori Toshiki, in order to avoid the truth of the mouth, the Odaiba inside and outside the box building, and the various groups were not allowed to fire at will.
Actually, Hori Rishi also can't help it, the head of the group, Kawazu Yukuni, the transfer and Suzuki Sunshiro, the lower servant Motoji Yamaguchi Hidenojin and the professor of all arts, Takeda Kaizaburo and others all said that they couldn't fight, what could he do?
However, Hakodate did not completely give up resistance, and the Shosho and the Goban family secretly prepared a ten-sided ambush strategy, preparing to lure the Lusians ashore and go deeper, and then learn from last year's white lord "surround and annihilate them".
It's beautiful to think about, but the Lu people are not fooled.
On the morning of July 7, 1858, five warships from Rusia appeared off the coast of Hakodate, and one of them headed straight for the pier.
The two small boats of the Hakodate Navy Army negotiated head-on.
But who knows, before the negotiations were completed, there was a "boom", and the Rucian warship suddenly exploded and caught fire.
The Lu flotilla then launched a heavy artillery bombardment!
In desperation, Hakodate commissioner Hori Toshiki immediately lit a fire and smoked a reminder to all Odaiba to counterattack.
As expected, the rifled guns, although superior in range, were poorly drilled and poorly trained, while the Lu naval guns were very powerful, accurate and ruthless—according to Takeda Kaizaburo and others, there were at least eight bombardment guns, and Nasimov explosive shells were used.
By the afternoon, most of the forts on the periphery of Hakodate were dumb - because the fortifications of the pozzolana cement, iron plates, and iron bars recommended by the white lord were very strong, and not many were completely destroyed, but all the shells, especially the pointed shells, were all gone.
After the Lu people found out that it was not to lure the enemy, they began a landing operation, and from then on, the battle situation began to be unfavorable to Fusang.
Under the cover of naval guns, Rucia quickly defeated the Fangumi of the Tsugaru family guarding Odaiba, and the Odaiba on Cape Bonten, on the outskirts of Hakodate, changed hands.
Then, the fighting began to spread to the docks.
Disappointingly, the Lucian did not penetrate the ground throughout, and after the guns and Congreve rocket pier and nearby buildings were all set on fire, the Ruthia ships withdrew to the east before dark.
To the west is to attack Matsumae, to the east, it is estimated that it is to go to the white lord - Ezo and North Ezo ports Although there are many, these are the three places worth attacking, and it is easy to guess.
However, Hori has no time to worry about others, and he is organizing people to put out the fire.
As for the news, as soon as the battle began, the communication ship went to Matsumae and Hakuba to warn - although the two "large" and four small warships were destroyed in the previous battle, the high-speed communication ship had long been hiding in the distance and finally survived.
As a result of this battle of Hakodate, the Rusians had the upper hand:
The five Lu ships, although they were also hit dozens of times, were generally unharmed, and even which of the ships that inexplicably caught fire and exploded at the beginning seemed to be unhindered in sailing.
As for the landing battle in Odaiba, the Lu people didn't seem to have suffered any big losses.
In contrast, Hakodate is much more miserable:
All six warships of the Hakodate Navy were sunk, and there were more than 200 sailors on the two large ships that attacked, most of whom were killed in battle; The sailors of the remaining four small boats did not take part in the battle, but were spared;
More than 300 people were killed and wounded by the Tsugaru family Ashigaru who garrisoned the Odaiba of Cape Tenten, and all the large cylinders were destroyed—a small part was the result of artillery bombardment, and most of them were done by the Lu people who landed on the shore;
As for the Matsumae family, who guarded Odaiba, and the shogunate Bangumi, who guarded Hakodate, there were not many casualties, only a few dozen. However, the Hakodate Pier was completely destroyed, and many buildings were also destroyed in the fighting, but fortunately, the buildings near the pier were all workshops and warehouses, and the loss of personnel was not much.
After this battle, the vitality of the Hakodate Commission was greatly damaged, but the benefits were not without benefits, and after being beaten by the Lucian people, it is estimated that the words of the professor of Zhushu Takeda Kaizaburo were finally listened to, and it is estimated that it will not be difficult to promote the Western art of war in the future.
As for the White Lord, Hakodate Governor Hori Toshiki is not particularly worried - because compared to Hakodate, the White Lord is much more prepared.
At the end of the sixth month of the Japanese calendar, Okubo Toshiyoshi, Murata Nagatoshi, and Nakahama Manjiro, who had returned from Edo, visited Hakodate, and at that time they persuaded Hori Toshiki to set up mines and lay mines.
The people of Hakokan didn't listen to it at the time, and now it's too late to regret it when they think about it.
But it is estimated that the white lord will definitely do this, so the loss will definitely be much smaller than that of Hakodate.
However, the white lord's warships are not as many as Hakodate's, there are only two small boats, and it is estimated that they can only be beaten and can't do it, which is really wronged!
