The Northern Zen who lived in the Central Plains for a long time had an epiphany, and since the middle of the Tang Dynasty, the Dharma lineage has slowly withered!
And the Southern Zen who is far away in the south has an epiphany, which is called Life Zen in the world, and everyone can become a Buddha!
Buddhism has opened the door of convenience, and since then the Zen door has been convenient because of the spread of Southern Zen, and there is no high and low threshold, and since then it has flourished in the south as the base!
Since the middle of the Tang Dynasty, after decades of brewing in Lingnan, Nanchan has gradually developed from Lingbei to Chu and Jiangxi, among which the hardships paid by Nanchan disciples can be imagined.
Because under the vigorous preaching and propagation of the Dharma by the disciples of the Six Patriarchs, Nanchan gradually went to the land of the Central Plains.
And because of the preaching of the Southern Chan Zen Gate, and the power of the great virtues of the monks in Jiangxi and Chu, believers and converts everywhere gradually followed to learn the Dharma. Because there are too many believers studying in these two places, a proper term was formed later, Jianghu!
In the past, the green forests, cottages, rangers, and swordsmen in the Central Plains were collectively referred to as the green forest heroes.
Because of this kind of fortunate thing in Zen Gate, many people and believers are running around, so everyone calls this kind of going out to experience and study, and it is also called breaking into the rivers and lakes!
The six ancestors later sat in Nanhua Temple in Shaozhou, Lingnan, and since then Nanhua Temple has been called Nanchan Ancestral Garden!
Now one of Chengyuan's senior brothers, Master Wenzhen, is the contemporary abbot master of the ancestral court.
There are many disciples under the ancestral throne of the ancestral master, and the most famous of them are the five masters of Nanyue Huairang, Qingyuan Xingsi, Heze Shenhui, Nanyang Huizhong, and Yongjia Xuanjue.
After the six ancestors sat down, Master Huairang first walked out of Lingnan and lived in the Tianzhu Peak of Gunanyue in Chudi, and lived in the Panruo Temple.
Later, the temple was changed to Guanyin Temple, and the six ancestors had an epiphany, creating the famous Nanyue school in later generations. The Nanyue Sword Sect in the world today claims to be a master of the Dharma lineage, but there are not many people in the world who recognize it.
Later, in the early years of Tang Tianbao, the master passed away in Nanyue Panruo Temple, and later Emperor Jingzong gave him the title of Dahui Zen Master, and the world was called the Seven Ancestors of Zen Buddhism.
However, there is still a Nanyue faction on the rivers and lakes today, and they set up a faction of Nanyue Hengshan Tianzhu Peak, but they rarely appear on the rivers and lakes, but they are the same famous Buddhist sect as the North Shaolin Temple. However, some people are rumored that the real Hengshan faction now has only one disciple per generation, but it is famous in the rivers and lakes.
The most famous under the master's seat was Master Daoyi, who was later called Matsu. And the reason why Buddhism recognizes the Hengshan faction is because the Nanyue faction is really famous all over the world, and it is because of this Matsu Daoyi.
Matsu was called the ancestor in later generations, and it is conceivable that its status in Buddhism can be imagined. However, what he first practiced was the gradual enlightenment method of the Northern Sect of Zen Gate. After coming to Hengshan and being enlightened by Master Huairang, he was called the most famous disciple of the master.
Because the lineage of the six ancestors at that time was divided among several disciples.
Qingyuan Xingsi, as the first disciple of the patriarch, has obtained the essence of the six ancestors. And this real reputation of the Seven Ancestors was actually inherited by the gods of Heze Temple. He not only founded the famous Heze Sect, but also fought against Master Nanyang Huizhong and occupied the upper hand of the Beidi Zen Gate.
However, the disciples of the master of the Shenhui and the Dharma system were actually inferior to Hengshan Matsu later. So some people called Dao Yi the Eighth Ancestor, and naturally Master Huairang became the Seventh Ancestor. In the hands of Emperor Jingzong, the world publicly honored the master of Master Matsu Daoyi, Hengshan Huairang as the Seven Ancestors of Nanchan!
This title can be said to have ulterior motives, but the Zen door is free and easy, but no one has come out to question it publicly!
However, Matsu himself naturally disagrees with this title, and never distinguishes it from the same family. Because his common surname is Ma, he makes people laugh and call himself Matsu. Later, when the Nanyue faction respected Master Huairang as the patriarch of the Kai faction, they respected him as the patriarch of the Nanyue faction, believing that he was the actual first generation patriarch of the Nanyue faction.
Therefore, in fact, from the time of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng Master to the Nanyue Matsu Daoyi, Nanchan was once again divided into another line that was different from the Six Patriarchs' lineage.
Although Matsu later left Hengshan and went to Jiangxi to preach and practice the Fa, since then people have called the Matsu family Nanyue faction!
And Master Daoyi's greatest achievement is that he is also the only master in the history of Buddhism and Han tradition who is called an ancestor by the world outside of the normal lineage. Because of his excellent branch, he occupies the limelight of the Shenhui lineage, and since then some people think that he should be the eighth ancestor of Zen.
But it was because of the emergence of Matsu that later generations divided the Zen sect. When it comes to today's division, the world is even more subdivided into Zen gates. The north and south have formed five sects and six schools of the descendants of the Southern Zen Gate, which is the so-called one leaf and five flowers in later generations!
Matsu's disciples are excellent, of course, the most famous of them is Master Huaihai, who created Hongzhou Zen!
The name of Baizhang Huaihai rises all over the world, and everyone in the world knows the eight ancestors. And Master Huaihai is also naturally extraordinary, and the most famous ones are Huang Bai Xiyun and Weishan Lingyou.
Later generations respected Matsu, not only because he was the most famous descendant of the six ancestors. Moreover, the Nanchan Nanyue series was magnificent, making the Nanchan from the six ancestors brilliant again.
In addition, when it was passed to the seat of Huang Bai Xiyun, his disciple Master Yixuan re-entered the Central Plains, restored the glory of the former Heze Sect, and founded the Rinzai Sect in Zhenzhou, the land of Hebei in the Central Plains. Under a sect, the disciples have made extraordinary achievements, and they can establish a sect, and you can imagine the excellence of the six ancestors back then!
