Lin Yanchao said: "The third question of the four books is 'the heart of the saint is impermanent', you broke this article, right?" β

Lin Yanchao took a sip of tea and said: "I recognize your article at a glance, this volume is in the preparation of the book room, you used four sentences to inherit the title of this question, not only the meaning is complicated, but even the format is broken, although you are very good at planning and answering questions, but you can't make up for such mistakes later, so I personally dethroned you!" β

Tao Wangling said: "Because students don't understand, the teacher's knowledge lies in the application of the world, and the Tao is in the instrument. But how the Word is preached, and others ask about it, is it a human being? This is something that the disciples cannot understand. Then when the disciple was in the examination booth and was about to write, he suddenly thought to himself, "Is studying and becoming an official what I want to do all my life?" β
"Since the disciple started reading, he felt that it was a matter of course to study and become an official, but why did the lacquer carving aspire to learn the Tao and not want to advance, but the master was pleased. The disciple did not understand, so he sat in the room for three days and two nights, and the thought kept coming to his mind so that he did not even have time to write the manuscript. β
After listening to Tao Wangling's words, others generally said that this candidate was tortured like this by the exam, this evil imperial examination.
Or they think that the candidate is crazy about the exam, and thinks about these irrelevant things during the exam.
If you change to an ordinary person, you must say, what do you order? It's important to see the doctor quickly.
Lin Yanchao didn't speak, others didn't know what Tao Wangling meant, but he understood.
Lin Yanchao said: "When Confucius asked why the lacquer carving was not published, he said that he could not believe it, so he did not want to be an official, and then left thirteen volumes, becoming a line of Confucianism. Wangling, you gave the example of lacquer carving, but also because I couldn't believe it? Or is it because of something else? β
Tao Wangling's expression moved, and then said: "The disciple remembers what Mr. once said, learning is now learning. Whatever can be used in the lower school, those who can speak are in the lower school, but all those who cannot use the work and cannot speak are in the ascending. The teacher's words are subtle, and the disciples are all in the middle of learning, but the way of attainment, the students feel that it is close in front of them, and far away in the sky, and they can never get it. β
Lin Yanchao smiled when he heard this: "After going to school, the master has the kung fu." I am not as good as the master, so the knowledge is in the middle of the school, there is no effort to reach the level, even if there is, there is no need to ask for it, just in the middle of the school, in the work. β
Xu Huobo and Yuan Keli were confused when they heard it, they didn't know what Lin Yanchao and Tao Wangling were talking about, what was Shangda? What is Drop-off? What and what is said is the same as the Book of Heaven.
But seeing Tao Wangling, he said: "This is what King Wen did not see, and the student understood." β

Lin Yanchao asked: "When Confucius asked the disciples about their ambitions, Zilu, Ran You's ambition to be in politics, Gong Xihua was willing to be in Lile, and the ambitions of the three of them were all in the work, why did the lady say it, but Zeng Hui said that he sang in the wind, but was praised by Confucius 'I and Dianye', do you three know why?" β
Lin Yanchao is telling a very famous story in the Analects.
Confucius asked the three disciples about their aspirations, and Zilu said that I would govern a country of a thousand times, sandwiched between the great powers, and make it rich and strong against foreign aggression.
Ran You said that if I am given a place of seventy or eighty miles, I can make him rich in three years.
Gong Xihua said that I was willing to do sacrifices, and when the princes of the Son of Heaven met, I was a master of ceremonies.
Confucius asked Zeng Hui, Zeng Hui had been playing the piano just now, and when Confucius asked him, he said that I had no ambitions, I just wanted to go on a spring outing and sing in the wind.
Confucius praised, I and the point (Zeng Hui) also.
The three disciples figured out the meaning of Lin Yanchao's words.
Xu Huobo said: "Teacher, the disciple thinks that studying and becoming an official is just like Zilu, Ran You, and Gong Xihua's ambition is like a tool, but the sage has a word, and the gentleman is not a weapon." It is to ask us not to be confined to the instrument, but to seek the Tao. Therefore, the sage praised Zeng Hui's words. β
Lin Yanchao nodded happily when he heard this, Xu Huobo's knowledge has made great progress.
Yuan Keli was already concentrating at the moment, and when he saw Xu Huobo opening his mouth, he said: "I don't fully agree with what Xinggong saw, what Zilu Sanzi said was deliberately sought, and deliberately became paranoid and couldn't seek perfection, but Zeng Hui's words were not intended." A true gentleman should be shaped with things, rather than cutting his feet to fit his shoes, so that the Tao is in the instrument. β
What Yuan Keli and Xu Huobo said is reasonable, and no one can convince anyone. The two couldn't help but look at Lin Yanchao.
Lin Yanchao said: "What you two said is right, you can learn from each other's strengths." Confucius once commented on Zigong and said, "You are also a weapon." Later, Confucius said again, a gentleman is not a weapon. So what does the sage mean is that Zigong is not a gentleman? β
Wang Yangming once said that the world has good roots and dull roots. The people of Ligen are born to know and act, and they know a hundred when they learn, which even Yan Hui and Mingdao (Cheng Hao) can't do. And most of the living beings in the world are people with dull roots, who are sleepy and reluctant, and learn one to know one. β
"Confucius commented on the three sons of Zilu, and the three sons were all instruments, but Zeng Hui was not. The talent of the instrument is outstanding, not empty words and untruthful people can be compared, but the world can be expected, so if a hundred people will ask me to take the device, or not, I will answer the device, because the Tao is in the instrument. However, if Wangling asks me, I can't say anything! β
Listening to Lin Yanchao's words, Tao Wangling raised his head, while Xu Huobo and Yuan Keli looked at Tao Wangling, and their eyes were full of envy.
Anyone can hear that Lin Yanchao has deep expectations for Tao Wangling in his words.
Lin Yanchao's meaning of this is that when someone else asks me if I want to study and become an official, or if I want to do my work, I will answer, a gentleman's knowledge is not obtained in his work, how can he get it? How to make a device?
But you are the only one, a gentleman who does not use a weapon, and goes to work and forms a tool, but it restricts your talent.
This is different from the science of science, which advocates that the gentleman is not a weapon, and believes that the metaphysical is the only way, and the metaphysical is the only instrument.
This is the Tao before the instrument. In the science of science, any specific practical kung fu is regarded as metaphysics, and a true gentleman should master the Tao and use the Tao as a weapon.
Lin Yanchao did not otherwise do this, it was not that Lixue proposed that the Tao should come first, he proposed that the instrument should come first, oppose it for the sake of opposition, and it is not interesting to raise the bar for the sake of raising the bar.
He advocated that the Tao is in the instrument, and most people are ordinary people, and if they pursue the realm of non-instrumentality, they will fall into a tool and cannot do anything, so the correct way is to master the theory in practice.
For example, Confucius commented on Zigong, and Ruqi also, this is a word of praise.
A gentleman is a person who has reached a certain realm, and he can not pursue theory in practice, which is born to know.
In the courtyard, the raindrops flew obliquely, and the Lin Mansion was already lit one by one from far and near.
Lin Yanchao stood under the court in a swallow suit, some rain fell between his temples, and his clothes were slightly wet, so that he didn't care about chatting with his disciples.
When Tao Wangling read the gentleman's disobedience, he asked with a yearning face: "Teacher, is there really a person in the world who is born to know?" β
"There is no one in a hundred, or even one in ten thousand, but it is not nothing, Master, Lao Tzu, Yang Mingzi is."
Tao Wangling thought for a while, nodded and said to Lin Yanchao: "If it weren't for the teacher's words, the disciple wouldn't be able to understand his mind. The student wants to ask the teacher to return to his hometown in Zhejiang tomorrow. β
"Oh?" Lin Yanchao asked, "Don't want to be an official?" β
Tao Wangling said: "It's never too late to take the test again, but knowledge can't be pulled down in a day." The disciple is beside the teacher, after school, the kung fu of thinking is not bad, but it is not enough to understand the Tao, and now the disciple understands that there is still a word missing. β
"If you can't understand it?"
Tao Wangling said: "That disciple will learn lacquer carving!" β
Lin Yanchao bowed his head and said, "Then you go!" β
"Yes, disciple bow to the teacher."
Tao Wangling and Lin Yanchao kowtowed three times.
Lin Yanchao picked up Tao Wangling and said reluctantly: "The official still has to do it, and he will return here in three years." β
"Yes, Teacher."
After speaking, Tao Wangling said goodbye and left.
Lin Yanchao walked under the eaves and watched Tao Wangling's back turn into the corner, with mixed feelings in his heart.
Even Yuan Keli, who has always been at odds with Tao Wangling, was a little sad, and Xu Huobo silently wiped away his tears and said: "Where can't the teacher do learning, why does Zhou Wanghe want to go back to Zhejiang?" β
"He didn't go back to Zhejiang all for learning."
"Why is that?"
Lin Yanchao said: "He is going to 'Daonan'." β
Dao Nanzhi said that it first started in the Eastern Han Dynasty, when Zheng Xuan went to Ma Rong to study, Zheng Xuan was about to leave, Ma Rong sighed with emotion: "Zheng Sheng is going now, I am going to the east." β
At that time, it was Daodong, and later Yang Shi worshiped Cheng Hao as a teacher, for his high feet, and later Yang Shi learned to return to the south, Cheng Hao saw Yang Shi's back, with a complicated mood to others: "I am the south." β

Although Tao Wangling and Yuan Keli fell off the list, Sun Chengzong won the Zhonghuiyuan, and the rest of the Lin Xuemen people such as Yuan Zongdao, Yu Shilian, and Hou Zhizhi bowed to the gold list titles.
In addition, the idea of applying forestry to the world was used for the first time in the imperial examination.
Since Lin Yanchao was demoted from Beijing, the study of merit has become popular again in the north and south of the river.
At the beginning, the study of merit was taught by Lin Yanchao himself, but now he is an official, no longer teaching apprentices in person, but his disciples inherit his learning, and his school is divided into three branches.
One is Guo Zhengyu, the director of the Ministry of Rites, who is both good at science and learning, and his learning is pure, and the public secretary has a good reputation.
One is Sun Chengzong, the practical faction in the court, and there is no successor of the doctrine, but Lin Xuemen admires him, especially Yuan Zongdao of the public security, and his two brothers were deeply influenced by it.
The other branch is Tao Wangling, Lin Yanchao is an official, busy with official business, Tao Wangling, Xu Huobo sorted out his words, and said on his behalf, and Guo Zhengyu, Sun Chengzong will be different from what he has learned in the past, Tao Wangling has followed Lin Yanchao for the longest time, and is considered to be the most correct by later generations of Confucians.
After Tao Wangling entered Zhejiang, Zhejiang scholars visited him famously. Tao Wangling gave lectures, and countless scholars learned what merit was through his mouth, and then worshiped his disciples.
Therefore, among the three branches, Tao Wangling has the most students and the greatest influence.
Since then, the south of the Daonan, six hundred years after the death of the Song Dynasty, the study of merit has flourished in Zhejiang!
