CHAPTER XXXVII
Suzuki introduced Kurt to a Japanese named Naoto Echizen, a private figure of the "Political and Economic Association".
Echizen Naoto was about forty years old, with a calm gaze and a polite look. It seems that he has been prepared for a long time, and he is also wearing a kimono, which makes Cotter understand that the Japanese have actually arranged candidates for cooperation according to Washington's requirements, because they do not want to offend the Chinese, so they arranged for non-governmental people to help Cotter.
Looking at Naoto Echizen, Kurt didn't know what help this man could offer him.
"Don't be 'confused' or 'confused' by Echizen-kun's appearance." Suzuki saw Kurt's doubts. "Echizen-kun is a capable person, and even our head of the chamber relies heavily on Echizen-kun. In Japan, people call Echizen-kun 'Uchida's second. β
"'Uchida second'?" Kurt asked, confused.
Suzuki laughed, and Naoto Echizen smiled imperceptibly.
"It seems that Mr. Kurt doesn't know much about Japan, and he doesn't know about Ryohei Uchida, who is famous in the world for espionage in Japan." Suzuki shook his head and sighed. "But it doesn't matter, you just need to know that Echizen-kun is very powerful and can help you in China. At Washington's request, this is the best we can help. β
Kurt looked at Naoto Echizen suspiciously. Echizen Naoto could also see Kurt's suspicion and bowed slightly.
"Wait a minute, Mr. Kurt can come with me for a walk around Tokyo, we need more time to get to know each other." In contrast to Kikui and Suzuki's English, which both have strong accents, Echizen's English pronunciation is very standard, with a slight eastern accent. "I have lived in the United States for 10 years, so I can understand the Americans, but Mr. Cotter has a lot to learn if he wants to be friendly with the Japanese."
Kurt moved his legs and feet, and sitting in this position for a long time was very unaccustomed to it.
"I can talk about it later when I know about Japan, but I have limited time."
Naoto Echizen smiled. "Mr. Cotter, what you need is patience. Without patience, there is no way to understand the Chinese; If you don't understand the Chinese, how can you deal with the Chinese? The Japanese have been studying China for thousands of years, but they are still 'confused' and 'confused' about China. So how much do Americans know about China? I am afraid that Americans' understanding of China has never surpassed that of the Opium Wars. β
"We still keep Taiwan, and that's how we Americans understand China." Kurt replied coldly.
"You keep Taiwan, it's only because the Chinese want you to think so." Naoto Echizen looked directly into Kurt's eyes. "Thirty years ago, Americans could have said with confidence, 'We keep Taiwan,' but it would be naΓ―ve to think that way in Washington now."
"That's a fresh argument." Suzuki suddenly 'interjected'. "Echizen-kun, although everyone calls you 'Uchida the second', even the bold and careful Uchida himself can't say such unbelievable things. Whether Washington is naΓ―ve on the Taiwan issue or not, you don't need to comment here. β
The politically ambitious Naoto Echizen is an extreme right-winger even from the point of view of the Japanese, and from time to time he wants to peddle his political views in public and 'private' places, while the old 'treacherous' Suzuki does not want to offend the Americans. Kurt? Russell was just a soldier with only tactics in his mind, and telling him that was tantamount to playing the harp to a cow.
Echizen Naoto bowed and said yes.
"If you want to deal with the enemy, you must first understand the enemy, and Echizen-kun has a lot of truth about this." Suzuki still looked at Kurt with a smile. "If it weren't for the fact that we know better how to deal with the Chinese, your superiors wouldn't have sent you here, so let's cooperate sincerely, the 'Echizen Army' is always very good at dealing with the Chinese."
"What is the 'Echizen Army'?" Kurt was confused by his wording. "There's still a military background in this?"
Yoshio Suzuki and Naoto Echizen both laughed.
Yoshio Suzuki drank a glass of sake, and his face turned abnormally red.
"In Japan, there is nothing that does not have a military background, and the Echizen Army is no exception. Don't underestimate this man, although he has no experience of enlisting in the army, he definitely meets Langley's requirements. He can speak Chinese and really has a Chinese identity, and he has a lot of connections in China. This 'Echizen Legion' is just a metaphor for Echizen leading some people who are always ready to help you in any way they can. β
"We have our own staff, we just need to get some advice on certain things." Kurt looked at Naoto Echizen again. "For example, how to kidnap a sensitive person inside China and send him out of China."
Naoto Echizen smiled. "The CIA doesn't know how to kidnap?"
Kurt looked at Naoto Echizen. "If I wanted to hear a satire on the CIA, I didn't have to come to Japan, I could find a lot in the United States. What I want to know is, are you really capable of helping me? β
Naoto Echizen put away his smile. "Absolutely no problem."
"In the end, I still have to consult the head of the room to make a decision." Suzuki ate a piece of sashimi and grinned at the mustard thorns. "Echizen-kun, take Mr. Kurt to a hot spring. Mr. Kurt is from Taiwan, so I would like to treat Mr. Kurt to some of the authentic Japanese hot springs. β
After eating, Naoto Echizen drove Kurt away from restless Tokyo.
On the way, the 'exchange' between the two people is no longer constrained by Suzuki's presence.
Kurt learns that Naoto Echizen is actually a professional spy trained by the Japanese government to target China. His mother was Chinese, so Echizen Naoto was able to speak fluent Mandarin and Shanghainese at a very young age, and after the age of eighteen he received funding from the government to study Chinese culture, and at the age of twenty-two, he entered China as a fake overseas Chinese and settled in Shanghai in the name of doing business, becoming a Chinese citizen.
Echizen Naoto used a humble attitude and a lot of money to open up many joints in China, and his influence even penetrated into many political departments and established the so-called "Echizen relationship network"; during the Taiwan Strait crisis that year, the accurate information provided by Yoshio Omori, the former director of the Internal Affairs Office, to Prime Minister Hashimoto Ryutaro at a critical moment came from Echizen Naoto, and the existence of Echizen Naoto was the top secret of the 'gate' of the Japanese Ministry of Intelligence.
Yoshio Omori paid particular attention to Japan's overseas intelligence gathering, and was dissatisfied with the current state of Japan's now rather loose intelligence agencies and the integration and sharing of intelligence, and pointed out that intelligence and military capabilities must be synchronized in order to provide security for Japan today. However, it is not easy to get rid of the influence of the United States, so civilian intelligence agencies are valued and nurtured. Naoto Echizen is one of them.
Hearing this, Cotter realized that Japan had attached great importance to this cooperation with the CIA, and even did not hesitate to use its secret trump card, and couldn't help but look at this Japanese with admiration.
After about an hour and a half, the two of them came to Atami, a famous seaside hot spring town surrounded by mountains and seas. The Izu Mountain Hot Springs here are filled with water gushing out of the valley into a stream that flows into Sagami Bay, and it is very imposing, and Kawabata Yasutsu was once 'fascinated' by the scenery here, and wrote a sympathetic love story such as "Izu's Dancing Girl".
Naoto Echizen explained that he originally wanted to take Kote to Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture, but the distance was farther, and he was afraid that the guests would be tired, and Atami was also very good, so he chose to stay here. Kurt didn't know that Gero Onsen City was one of the three famous hot springs in Japan, and even Toyotomi Hideyoshi had fallen for it, so he didn't know what the difference between Gero and Atami was, but the beautiful scenery here made Kurt very comfortable.
When Kurt was in Taiwan, he waited in the base all day long, but he didn't actually soak in the hot springs, and when he arrived here, he was first dizzy by the etiquette of dressing, but after soaking in the hot springs like cooked shrimp, Kurt felt an unprecedented ease.
In the process, in the courtyard and in the corridor, Kurt saw some flags with words written on them, and some words were also hung on the walls. Echizen Naoto told him that it wasn't actually a Japanese character, but a kanji. The words on the flag are simpler, called "Wind Forest Volcano", while the words on the wall are more complicated, they are "fast as the wind, Xu like a forest, encroaching like fire, immobile like a mountain".
These words come from the Chinese Art of War, because the owner here is from the town of Ishigawa, which is the birthplace of the family of the famous Japanese military commander Takeda Shingen, and Takeda Shingen himself likes to study the Art of War and use these words as his motto, so you can see them everywhere here.
When Naoto Echizen explained the meaning of these words, Kurt was surprised to hear them, because they were not much different from the modern tactics he had learned in the army.
"But this is something that the Chinese have understood two thousand years ago." Naoto Echizen said meaningfully to Kurt. Although not everyone has studied the Art of War, this knowledge seems to have melted into the blood of the Chinese, so it is not easy to confront the Chinese intellectually.
Kurt somewhat understood Naoto Echizen's intentions. "Are you reminding me that my view of the Chinese is wrong?"
"I don't want to judge what I don't know." Naoto Echizen smiled. "Then you have to know how powerful the Chinese are. Look at the other ancient civilizations, none of them have survived to this day, no matter how you look at it, it's a fact. Maybe Americans have a longer history than China? β
