Chapter 40, The First in Turmoil (3)
Because the singing team is arranged in the audience, and they don't have special makeup. So when the song entered the chorus stage, these people suddenly opened their mouths to sing, which surprised the surrounding audience.
In this segment, the song is only sung in the first stanza. At the end of the song, the members of the singing group closed their mouths, and almost immediately became the audience again.
"Hey, dude, are you going to sing this song?" Right next to a member of the singing team, a young man with a little hazel freckles on his nose gently tugged on the sleeve of a singer next to him and asked in a low voice.
"Yes. We will sing. The member of the band replied simply.
"This song is so exciting!" The young man exclaimed.
"There are a few more paragraphs behind this song, and only one is sung here, and the whole song is sung later, which is more energetic." Another chimed in, "I live nearby, and I've heard them practicing this song for the past few days......"
"Shut up, I won't be able to hear the lines!" Another person complained.
The drama on stage continued, and Vesuvius was too small to accommodate the rebels. Spartacus disagreed with Kress about the future movements of the rebels. Spartacus believed that the Roman legions were very strong, and after this battle, they had already attracted the attention of Rome, and it was difficult to stay in the country. The rebels should first leave Rome and go north, cross the Alps, establish their own free kingdom north of the Alps, and then return to Rome and free all the slaves when their strength has grown. Kress thought that Spartak was too timid, he felt that there was nothing to be afraid of the Roman army, and the rebels should stay there, conquer the Roman cities, liberate the slaves there, and then continue to fight, continue to liberate the slaves to strengthen themselves, and eliminate the evil slavery at the minimum.
Neither of them could convince anyone, and in the end they had to resort to a democratic vote. As a result, most of the rebel soldiers chose to support Spartacus, and Kress was indignant, and finally when Spartacus led the army north, he asked to serve as the rear guard of the army. When the rebels departed, he left the rebels with a group of warriors and attacked the Roman city himself. They were ambushed by the Romans, and by the time Spartacus arrived, they were all gone. The Romans executed all the prisoners of war with cruel punishment. Seeing this, the rebels were furious, and they were reluctant to march north again, demanding revenge. Spartacus could not convince everyone and had to vote again. As a result, this time everyone chose to stay in Rome and fight.
"If you stay in Rome, why should Spartacus obey democracy?" One viewer couldn't help but say, "What do those slaves know?" ”
"That's not right." Another retorted, "If Kress could also obey democracy like Spartacus, there would be no such thing." And you say, 'What do those slaves know?' The clergy and the nobles will say the same thing about us! ”
The Spartacus rebels remained in Italy, and under his command they were constantly victorious, but Spartacus became more and more worried. Because he knows that victory is only temporary. The main forces of the Romans were approaching. He constantly tried to convince the rebels to hurry north, but his suggestions were always rejected.
Crassus and the Roman army blocked the road to the north of the Spartacus rebels, and they approached step by step, while Spartacus marched south with the rebel army, and at the same time contacted the pirates, hoping to cross the sea and retreat to Sicily. But when they arrived at the agreed location, the pirate fleet did not appear. So they were surrounded by the large army of Crassus. Crassus sent a letter to Spartacus to persuade him to surrender. He promised that Spartacus would become a Roman citizen and general if he surrendered. But when Spartacus asked about the other slaves, Crassus replied, "They will go back to the manor and the gladiator school to continue their slavery." ”
Spartacus refused Crassus' persuasion to surrender and led his troops to force a breakthrough. After paying a huge price, they finally broke through. But the Romans brought in more troops, which forced Spartacus to have a decisive battle with the large army of Crassus in Apria.
Before the decisive battle, Spartacus Crassus met. Crassus once again used the last condition to persuade Spartacus to surrender. Spartacus also rejected Crassus again. He and Crassus agreed that everyone would fight to the death on the battlefield tomorrow morning.
On the battlefield, the rebel army was defeated with fewer enemies, and Spartacus was killed on the battlefield. His adjutant, Enomayi and more than six thousand other fighters were captured. Crassus ordered them all to be crucified.
The final scene of the play is the crucifixion of Enomayi and two other rebel soldiers. They were forced to carry their own crosses and erect them themselves. Then the Romans crucified them. The two warriors were nailed on either side, and Enomayi was nailed in the middle.
"This is sacrilegious!" A priest grasped the cross on his chest tightly with his hand and spoke viciously in a deep voice.
Indeed, this scene is clearly a parody of the biblical scene of Jesus' crucifixion. At that time, Jesus also carried his own cross and was crucified with two other prisoners, the two prisoners on either side and Jesus in the middle.
The two crucified warriors hung their heads and sobbed, and Enomayi, who was also crucified, thought about it and looked left and right, and then cried out: "What's the matter, my brother, can it be said that losing one's life is worse than being a slave?" Yes, we didn't win our freedom in the end, but we at least won for ourselves that we would never be enslaved again! This time we were defeated, but in the long run, our cause will never fail, and the slavery system of man oppressing man and enslaving man will definitely be overthrown! Spartacus' name and career will be immortalized! Brothers, let's sing our war hymn one last time! ”
Then Enomayi was the first to sing: "Debout! les damnés de la terre, Debout ! les forçats de la faim……”
In the midst of his singing, the two crucified warriors also stopped crying, raised their heads, and sang along:
“La raison tonne en son cratère :
C’est l’éruption de la fin”
The Roman soldier with a spear raised his head in horror, looked at the crucified slaves, and shouted in a terrified voice: "No singing!" Don't sing! One of the soldiers also stabbed Enomayi in the ribs with a spear, and blood flowed out.
"This, what a terrible blasphemy! Lord, send down thunder......" the priest whispered through gritted teeth.
In the Bible, after Jesus was crucified, a Roman soldier named Longinus stabbed Jesus in the ribs with a spear to check whether he was dead. Later, the gun became a sacred relic of the Catholic Church, and was called the Gun of Longinus. There are even legends such as "As long as you hold the gun, everyone within 120 feet will surrender, and the person who wields the gun can control the fate of the world, but those who lose it will be killed instantly". These legends really deceived many people in later generations, and even Hitler once fanatically begged for spirits with it. It is said that he was also given the holy spear at one point, but this did not allow him to win the Second Great War.
But Enomay's singing did not stop, he continued to sing.
This lyric, which has been sung once before, is very simple in lyrics and melody, so many people in the theater sang along. Only the priest turned pale, bowed his head and said nothing.
Unlike the previous choruses, this time, the chorus sang the whole song directly. Of course, in the original history, this song should have had six stanzas. But Joseph who traveled back in time could not fully remember the lyrics of these six stanzas. Because in the later Chitu country, because of translation reasons, (some of which are translated into Chinese and almost impossible to sing) this song is basically only sung in three paragraphs. So now that Joseph has copied it, only the original first, second and sixth paragraphs remain.
As the second stanza was sung, the entire theater suddenly fell silent. Over the years, under the influence of people like Voltaire, the French have also fallen far from the "piety" of the past, (but to be honest, France, as the filial daughter of God, did not do too many blasphemous things in the past.) But such a song that directly denies religion still surprises everyone. But because of the general dissatisfaction with the church, such an extreme denial of religion made everyone more excited, and when the chorus sounded, more people joined in the chorus.
This is followed by a more explicit, and even more defiant, passionate sixth paragraph:
By this time the priest had slipped out quietly and disappeared into the streets.
After the song was sung, the whole theater was quiet for a while, and then a voice rang out: "Great, this song is amazing!" Can you sing it again? ”
Then the whole theater was filled with this plea:
"Sing it again, I still don't remember some words!"
"Please, sing it again."
"Sing it again!"
Originally, the curtain had been lowered, and the actors and singing team were about to leave, but at such a request, everyone had to sing the song again, and then again...... By the end, it had been sung six times. Obviously, the premiere was an unprecedented success.
