Chapter 1 Delphi
Agosilaus's brother Telutias was killed in battle on the Calchidia Peninsula, and Agosilaus was devastated and fell ill again.
Eventually, another Spartan king, Agosepolis, reassembled a large army from the allies of the Peloponnese and again went to Northern Greece to attack the Carchidian League.
As a result, Agosipolis arrived in northern Greece in the middle of summer, and he unfortunately fell ill with a fever due to the heat, and died of illness before he could fight the enemy.
After hastily holding the king's funeral, the Council of Elders of Sparta sent another expedition against the successors of the Carchidian League, and after a series of bitter battles, in the spring of the third year (i.e., the thirteenth year of Dionia, 380 BC), forced Orintus to surrender and dissolve the alliance, and at the same time forced the other city-states on the Carchidia Peninsula to join the Spartan League, and the coastal cities of Macedonia were also returned to the Macedonian king Amentas, and Sparta gained supremacy in Northern Greece in one fell swoop.
In the midst of the fierce war in Northern Greece, the Spartans adopted a high-pressure policy in the Peloponnese, forcing Frius, a city-state in the middle of the peninsula, to recruit the nobles who had been exiled, and as a result, the nobles and the commoners broke out into war, and the Spartans supported the nobles. After a siege of half a year, Frius was forced to surrender, and then, in accordance with the wishes of Sparta, a new form of government was introduced.
In central Central Greece, after Sparta controlled Thebes and supported Platia, it was attached to other city-states of Piosia, and Sparta's power began to expand from Piosia in central Central Greece to Attica in the east and Phorgis in the west......
Spend the rainy spring and the hot summer. Polybia, the commander of Sparta's northern expedition, led his army back victoriously from northern Greece. Before entering the flat and fertile region of Piosia, they first passed through the regions of Thessaly, Maris, Doris, and Phokis, where there were many places worthy of worship as the victorious Spartan generals.
The first is the peak of Oeta, where Hercules, the ancestor of the Spartan royal family, is said to have sacrificed himself to a cremation pile and ascended to heaven in flames to join the family of the gods of Olympus.
Secondly, when crossing the narrow pass, the narrowest passage can only accommodate two four-wheeled carriages side by side, this passage is called the Thermopylae, its name can cause a strong resonance among the Spartan soldiers, because a hundred years ago the Spartan king Leonidas led his 300 guards to fight against the Persian army here, and all of them died, winning immortal glory for the Spartan soldiers, almost every time the Spartan army passed through here, they had to worship.
After trekking through the rugged mountain trails, you will enter a small lowland known for its abundance, called the Dorian Plains, from which the Dorian name of the Greek population is derived (the Spartans were also Dorians). Hundreds of years ago, the Greeks who migrated from the inhospitable north rested on the plains of Doris and eventually invaded the lowlands scattered along the coastline surrounded by mountains. Over the centuries, they have forgotten their barbarian identity, as the Spartans have always claimed to be descendants of Hercules, the former king of Sparta, Menelaus.
To the south of the Plain of Dorus, near the Gulf of Corinth, there is also a mountain known throughout Greece called Parnassos. Legend has it that on this steep hill was a giant python named Pitong, known for its cannibalism, and at the behest of Hera, he hunted down the young Apollo and Artenis siblings and their mother Leto. Apollo, an adult who came to the mountain, found the giant monster that was devouring the eagles in the lonely and gloomy canyon, shot him dead with a deadly bow and arrow, and became the master of the region.
Apollo planted laurel trees to purify this sacred land. Later, people cut down the branches of the laurel tree and built one temple after another of Apollo here, and it became the holy place of the oracle of all Greeks - Delphi.
The area is high and densely forested, and the soil is poor, making it difficult for the local residents to make a living.
Apollo said to them, "Guard my temple and receive the people who come to visit with warmth." ”
So the people of Delphi became the priests of Apollo, and they built a huge temple complex of Apollo, and collected the same fees from everyone who came to ask for oracles and worship. It was because of this impartiality of the priests of Delphi that more and more Greeks trusted the oracle of Delphi and believed that the god Apollo would live there for nine months of the year on Mount Parnassus, where the air was pure.
And because it is rumored that when Zeus first ascended the throne of world domination, he wanted to measure the land he inherited, and released two eagles to the east and west respectively, flying in the opposite direction, observing the flight of the two eagles, in order to determine the center of the world, as a result, the two eagles met at Delphi, where Zeus left a huge stone egg - Omphale as a mark (this stone egg has survived to this day), so Delphi is even more famous, beyond the Greek race, well-known throughout the Mediterranean. For this reason, the Delphi priests also welcomed Gentiles to come here and pray for oracles.
When the warring city-states came to seek the judgment of the Oracle of Delphi, they believed in the judgment of the Oracle completely. Therefore, Delphi's neutrality must be guaranteed, otherwise no one can afford the consequences.
200 years ago, when a neighboring powerful city-state of Crisa tried to annex Delphi, the whole of Greece was shaken and launched an angry counterattack, many city-states formed an alliance to defend this sacred area, they even violated Greek tradition by poisoning the river that the Crysians drank from, the city of Crisa was breached, the ungodly city was razed to the ground, and the bay that separated mainland Greece from the Peloponnese was originally taken in the great city-state of Phetcis and called Krisa Bay, After the end of the war, it was named after Corinth, an important city-state on the isthmus. More than 200 years later, the wilderness where Krissa lived is still a barren place that no one dares to live in, because it is a place cursed by the gods.
After this most tragic lesson, the city-states around Delphi formed a close alliance of close neighbors, the League of Amphictione, which included the Thessalians, Phtiotis, Lokris, Phorgis, Piosia, and Athenians...... Later, the city-states of the Peloponnese also joined under the leadership of Sparta.
The main purpose of this alliance is to protect Delphi's neutrality and not allow any force to harm and annex Delphi, so this alliance is also called the Holy Alliance. Each of the allies provided two delegates to serve as part of the overall council of the League, which met in Delphi once a year in the spring and autumn to discuss the governance of the Delphi region, the maintenance of the temples, the holding of the Pythian Games, and the administration of the Apollo Legacy. In this way, the oracles and priestly nobility of Delphi gained independent status, and Delphi became more prosperous.
On this day, noble priests from all over Delphi walked the winding stone steps to a steep hillside where the main temple of Apollo was located, made of huge stones. It is backed by the straight and bare cliffs of Mount Parnassus and looks down on the deep Prestige Valley in front of it, giving it a cold and majestic feeling.
The nine powerful priests of Apollo were representatives of the nine Greek tribes that had lived in Delphi hundreds of years earlier, and one of the nine priests was seated in the temple with a woman.
This is an elderly woman with a shriveled body, loose skin, and a furrow on her face. She was not striking, but she had great prestige among all the Greeks, for it was she who went into the oracle and brought the oracle of Apollo to the people in a fumigation full of sulfur. She did not have a name of her own, she was called Pythia, and every oracle on behalf of Apollo was called Pythia.
Ten people sat around the temple with solemn expressions.
The old priest at the head was the chief priest of the main temple of Apollo, Syrcitas, who spoke: "An hour ago, I just sent off Polybiadas, the Spartan general who conquered Calchidia. Before the Spartans went north, the Spartan king Agesillaus sent an oracle for his expedition, and he came this time to thank Apollo for his guidance. The enthusiasm of the Spartans for Apollo is impressive! But—"
"He brought four heavily armed soldiers and let them set foot on the sacred Mount Parnassus, and only after I protested, did he let them down!" ”
"This is blasphemy! It is a well-known fact that no one with sharp weapons is allowed to enter this sacred area, and these Spartans should be severely punished! A priest next to him shouted angrily.
"Severe punishment? The Spartans were notoriously barbaric and rude, and in the event of a big fuss, it would be us who would suffer, knowing that their army was stationed on the plain of Dorus, not far to the north. The other priest said helplessly.
"Do the Spartans still dare to lead an army into Delphi?! If they dare to do that, all of Greece will organize another anti-Spartan alliance to destroy Sparta like Kryza! The other priest said angrily.
"The Spartans would not do such stupid things, and they had no less respect for Delphi than they did for their ancestor Hercules." The main priest Sitarsis interrupted their quarrel and said worriedly: "But the balance of power in Greece has been broken, and after the city-states of Central Greece are more and more dependent on Sparta, the Holy Alliance has almost become Sparta's sole decision, and it will be difficult to maintain Delphi's neutrality, which is a great threat to Delphi's survival!" ”
