Chapter 146: Battle of Tarnovo (1)

After the Romanian army captured Targové, Polsky, Varna and other places, the First and Third Armies began to move closer to the Second Army led by Lieutenant General Andrew. The Romanian army left 17 divisions to garrison the occupied area and protect the transport lines, and 12 Romanian divisions began to press on the three ancient Bulgarian capitals of Tarnovo.

Tarnovo, one of the three ancient capitals of Bulgaria. Located in north-central Bulgaria. Historically, it was the capital of Bulgaria. At the end of the twelfth century, the Bulgarian nobles Asen brothers organized an armed break from the Byzantine Empire in Tarnovo and founded a new kingdom where they made their capital.

In 1205, the Latin Emperor Balwyn Flender was captured by the Bulgarian king and imprisoned here. Tarnovo was the seat of the archbishop at the time, so it is also famous for its church architecture, and on the top of the hill of Zarevitz there is the Church of the Assumption of the Archbishop and the Archbishop's Palace.

The Church of the 40 Martyrs, built by order of Tsar Ivan Asen II (1218-1241), houses the famous marble columns with inscriptions commemorating the victory of the village of Lokotnica (after which Bulgaria became the largest power in the Balkans).

In the 12th and 14th centuries, Tarnovo was the most fortified city in Bulgaria and the political, economic and cultural center of Bulgaria. When the Ottomans captured the city on July 17, 1393, the development of Tarnovo stopped. The city of Tarnovo was the second largest city in the Balkans in the Middle Ages after Constantinople.

Three years later, the Turks conquered the entire Bulgarian Empire. The series of subsequent revolts of the Bulgarians remained concentrated in Tarnovo until the seventeenth century.

On July 7, 1877, the Russian army liberated Tarnovo. It ended more than 480 years of Ottoman rule. After the 10th Russo-Turkish War, Russia returned it to Bulgaria. Now Tarnovo has 56,000 inhabitants, outside the city of the Danube, a tributary of the Danube, the Jantra River

Tarnovo is also very important, connecting the capital Sofia to the west and Varna, the largest port in Bulgaria to the east, which has been occupied by Romania. Plovdiv can be reached by crossing the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria to the south, and to the north is the border city of Ruse on the border with Romania. So the chief of the General Staff of Prieshan calculated that Bulgaria would not easily allow Romanian troops to capture the city.

The Bulgarian side gradually withdrew its troops from the Sehi front and prepared to fight the Romanian army in Tarnovo, and the two sides were on the verge of a major battle around the ancient Bulgarian capital.

Now the Bulgarian Minister of Army, Lieutenant General Mikhail Savov, is in the city of Tarnovo, and the commander of the First Army, Lieutenant General Vasil Kutinchev, who has arrived in advance, is in the headquarters of the newly formed 14th Division, talking about the main points of the layout of this battle.

After receiving the declaration of war from Romania, the First Army had stopped pursuing the retreating Serbian army, allowing the remnants of the army that had retreated from Bitola to Skopje to finally escape.

"Lieutenant General Kutinchev, as the main elite of the Bulgarian army, you will first need to go to Mount Zarevitz to defend the army brought by the Romanian crown prince."

"Then we need to increase our firepower."

Lieutenant General Kutinchev voiced his demands. He also had his own reasons for saying this, the First Army had lost its weapons and equipment after a series of major battles, and although it had replenished some of them on the road, it was still lacking, and it was obvious that Lieutenant General Kutinchev hoped that he could replenish a little more in order to have a good state to hold the position.

"No problem."

Lieutenant General Savov said without the slightest thought, and it was obvious that the Minister of War had already thought about him. He picked up a list of his signed names on the table, handed it to Lieutenant General Kutinchev, and said. "But I need you to hold on to Mount Charrevitz to buy time for the rest of the army."

Lieutenant General Kutinchev took the list handed to him by Lieutenant General Savov, and without answering immediately, he first checked the weapons and supplies that had been replenished for himself. On this list, Lieutenant General Savov replenished him with 5,000 rifles, 1.2 million rounds of rifle ammunition, 31 Maxim machine guns, and 540,000 rounds of machine gun ammunition. There are also 13 cannons, nearly 20,000 rounds of various shells, plus some iron catalpa, tents, sacks, medicines and other supplies.

"Isn't that too little?"

Lieutenant General Kutinchev voiced his displeasure. Then he went on to explain. "The Romanian army has strong firepower, and our First Army is not confident that it will be able to withstand their attack with these supplies alone."

Hearing Lieutenant General Kutinchev express his dissatisfaction, War Minister Lieutenant General Savov also spoke out about his current difficulties. "Lieutenant General Kudinchev, I scraped together a lot of these supplies, and now half of the supplies in my hand have been given to you, what do you want me to do?"

Now that the Bulgarian army has fought two wars in a row, there is not much left of the military materials that were prepared before. After all, the annual military expenditure of 50 million leva (2 million pounds) has squeezed Bulgaria's finances to the limit, and the key is that they have to purchase arms from abroad, so the price will definitely not be cheap.

In fact, after the first Balkan War, Bulgaria's military reserves that had been prepared for many years had bottomed out, and who let him directly face the main force of the Ottoman army. Had it not been for the assistance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Romania, it is estimated that they would have lost the dispute. Now all the military reserves of Bulgaria are concentrated in the hands of the Minister of War, Lieutenant General Savov.

After hearing the Minister of War, Lieutenant General Savov, tell him about his suffering, Lieutenant General Kudinchev knew that he had reaped the greatest benefits. He gritted his teeth. "I will do my best to hold the position on Mount Charevitz."

Hearing the words of Lieutenant General Kudinchev, the Minister of War, Lieutenant General Savov, said with a wry smile. "If it weren't for the shortage of our army's inventory, I wouldn't have arrived here early, just to prepare early, so I came here early." Later, he also gave Lieutenant General Kudinchev a sweet date. "In two days' time, the king's army will arrive, and I will replace you with rest."

Lieutenant General Kutinchev could only eat the sweet dates given by Lieutenant General Savov, and after he took his military cap and put it on his head, he told the Minister of War. "Okay, I'll go and replace the 14th Division first, after all, the division they just established is still not enough to face the Romanians."

Lieutenant General Savov watched Lieutenant General Kutinchev leave, picked up a report in his hand requesting military supplies, and looked at it again.

After Lieutenant General Kutinchev left the headquarters, he sent someone to take the list signed by Lieutenant General Savov to receive weapons and equipment at the quartermaster warehouse, and then took 76,000 men of the First Army to take over the position of the 14th Division to prepare for the upcoming big battle.
