154 Fear
"Are you nervous?" Officer Sang asked.
"Officer Blue told me to keep an eye out for the stalkers. Aren't you nervous?
They came to the hospital. Instead of parking in the parking lot, Officer Sang parked outside a remote side gate. Then, he looked around to make sure everything was in order before letting the bronze in. On the third floor, the stout police officer put on a gun belt and stood guard outside Gong Yu's hospital room. Bronze entered the room.
"How are you?" Looking at Gong Yu on the hospital bed, Gu Bronze's heart was full of pity and remorse. He blamed himself again, feeling that he should be indirectly responsible for what happened to her.
Gong Yu forced a smile. "It's better."
"yes, you look much better." Bronze cautiously touched her forehead lest it touch the sling on her right arm. He found that the IV line had been removed.
"You're coaxing me again." Gong Yu said,
"Really. You look beautiful. β
"You're very considerate of patients."
Although there is still some mud and sand in Gong Yu's hair, it has been combed neatly. Her tanned cheeks were no longer so pale, and the dark spots around her eyes had faded. Her eyes radiated again. She was as beautiful as ever.
"You don't know, how worried I am for you." Bronze caressed her cheek.
"Hi, I'm strong."
"That's right. Does it hurt terribly? β
"The wound was jumping and hurting. Do you understand the truth of the matter? Did the police find out who broke into your home? β
"Not yet." Bronze dodged her gaze.
"Tell me everything." Gong Yu insisted.
"I don't understand what you mean."
"I should know more about you, though you don't think so." Gong Yu said, "You have something to hide from me. β
"Maybe it's not the right time to discuss this."
"I'm begging you not to hide anything from me."
Bronze exhaled. "The detective in charge of the investigation...... His name is Lan Weiguang...... He thinks it was a deliberate incident and that the people who broke in were specifically here to kill me. β
Gong Yu's eyes widened.
"I really can't think of a reason why someone would want to kill me," Bronze lied, "but Officer Blue thinks I should be extra careful in the period before I find out the truth." There was a policeman who followed me, just outside in the aisle, and he drove me here. He's like...... I think you'll call him ......"
"Why do you call him?"
"My bodyguard. And ......"
"Tell me everything."
Bronze gazed affectionately into her eyes. "You're so important to me. I don't want you to put yourself in danger again. In my opinion, after you are discharged from the hospital, it is better for us not to see each other for a while. β
"Why can't we meet?" Gong Yu curled up his legs and sat up straighter.
"What does it mean to me if you get bullet again? It's too dangerous. Until Officer Blue finds the answers he wants to find, we must be apart for a while until he declares the danger lifted. β
"But that's ridiculous."
The door opened suddenly. Bronze turned around abruptly, not knowing what was going to happen, until he saw that it was the skinny doctor Gong Yu had seen when he was admitted to the hospital, and he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Aha," the doctor straightened his glasses and said, "Mr. Gu, you must be as happy as I am to see that Ms. Gu's condition has improved." β
Bronze tried his best to hide the nervousness he felt when he talked to Gong Yu. "Yes, she's recovering even better than I expected."
The doctor walked over to Gong Yu. "Actually, I'm very happy because you can be discharged."
Gong Yu looked like he had misheard him. "Let me be discharged?" She blinked. "Is it now? You're not kidding? β
"Absolutely true. Why, you seem to be upset? β
"I'm so happy." Gong Yu glanced at the bronze meaningfully. "It's just that what happened is not to be happy......"
"Well, now you hear the good news." The doctor said, "Rest in your own bed, surrounded by familiar things, and you'll be happier in no time." β
"Right now." Gong Yu repeated, glancing at the bronze again.
"I stopped at your lodgings and brought you some clothes." Bronze handed her the shopping bag he was carrying. "No fancy clothes.
"I asked the nurse to bring me a wheelchair." The doctor said.
"But I can go." Gong Yu said.
The doctor shook his head. "Our safeguards will not discharge you unless you are in a wheelchair. Other than that, you can do whatever you like. β
"At the very least, can I get dressed without the nurse standing by me?"
"Wear it with a wounded arm? Surely you can do it? β
"Of course." Gong Yu found that the hospital gown she was wearing was tightly wrapped. So, she asked the doctor and bronze to help her out of bed. "You see, I can do it." Gong Yu stood alone, looking a little unbalanced, because her right arm was hanging with a sling. "I can do it."
"I'll help you get dressed." Bronze said.
"Bronze, I ......"
"What?"
"I don't feel glamorous at this point. Honestly, I'm covered in dirty and embarrassed. Her face flushed, "I want to get dressed alone." β
"You have nothing to be embarrassed about. But if you really want to get dressed alone, well, I'll wait in the aisle outside. When you're ready, the police will send us home. If you do need help, then ......"
"Then I'll call you."
After Officer Sang checked the parking place, Bronze nervously pushed Gong Yu through the side door of the hospital. He was wary of what might happen in this remote area. He helped Gong Yu get out of the wheelchair and get into the back seat of the police car, then quickly closed the door and sat in the front seat of the car.
"Why don't you sit in the back row with me?" Gong Yu asked as the police car drove off.
Bronze did not answer.
"Oh," she understood, her voice lowered, "you're trying to keep your distance from me, lest you ......"
"It even occurred to me now that I shouldn't have been in the same car with you." Bronze said, "Officer Blue is right, and there will be people who will try to attack me." In that case, I don't want you to be in any danger. I can't stand the thought that you're going to suffer misfortune because of me. He nervously looked at the car behind them.
"I can't stand the thought of being separated from you." Gong Yu said, "Did you really decide that we would not see each other again until this matter was over?" β
"If I could figure out a safer way, I would do it." Bronze said.
"We can get out of here and hide."
Officer Sang glanced back at her. "Officer Blue wouldn't approve of you doing this. In fact, I can guarantee that he will do everything he can to stop you from doing so. β
"That's part of your job right now, right?" Bronze asked, "Prevent me from leaving here?" β
There was no answer.
"We'd better not take the main road when we go back." Bronze said, "Let's go the other way, so that they can't think of it." β
Officer Sang looked at him with a strange gaze. "Listen to your tone, it seems like it's not the first time you've thought you're being watched."
"Going the other way is just a logical precaution." Bronze turned to face Gong Yu. "We'll drop you off in front of your house. You told me that you were going back to the mainland to run errands, and that you should leave tomorrow. It's a good time. I know that you probably don't want to travel with your arms like this right now, but you can rest in peace when you arrive in Hangzhou. Actually, it's a good idea to be able to stay with your relatives when you're done. You're going to have to stay a little longer. I think you should leave early and leave this afternoon. β
Gong Yu looked overwhelmed.
"It's the only way to go." "I can't believe Officer Blue is right yet, but if he's right, the people who want to harm me will use you as a weapon and may kidnap you." β
"Kidnap me?"
"We see this as a possibility."
"Oh my God."
"We can be reached by phone. As soon as the officer thinks it's safe, you can come back. β
"Can't we really stay together?"
"Maybe it won't last long, maybe just a few days."
They fell into an awkward silence. Officer Sang drove into Gong Yu's driveway and parked the police car diagonally in a more secluded place outside the gate of her courtyard wall.
Gong Yu curled up and got out of the car with the help of bronze. Officer Sang was waiting in the police car, and Bronze and Gong Yu entered the courtyard and stopped in the shadows below the gatehouse. They looked at each other.
"It must have been a mistake," Ms. Gong said, "and I felt like I was having a nightmare." Only in your arms can I wake up from my dreams and find that none of this has ever happened. β
Bronze shook his head.
"Can you come up with a reason why someone wants to kill you?" Gong Yu asked.
"I've asked myself a hundred, a thousand times, but I can't find the answer." Bronze lied. He stared nervously at Gong Yu's face. "Since I won't see you for a while, I want to remember your smile."
He leaned over, as gentle as he could, lest he touch her injured shoulder.
Gong Yu ignored the shoulder injury and hugged the bronze tightly with his other arm. She couldn't help but shrink as her shoulders were squeezed.
She pressed her face against his face and said in a low, hurried voice, "Run away with me." β
"No, I can't."
She looked away and pleaded with him earnestly. "Please."
"Didn't Officer Sang tell you, the police will stop us."
"If You Really Love Me......"
"It's because I love you that I can't push you into the fire pit. Maybe we can trick the police and escape, but the people who chase me will follow me, and we will live in fear all the time. I don't want you to live like that. I love you too much to ruin your life. β
"I'll beg you one last timeβplease come with me."
Bronze shook his head firmly.
"You don't know how much I'm going to miss you."
"Just keep in mind that we're not going to be separated forever." "With a bit of luck, we'll be together again in a short time." Wherever you go, give me a call. We'll figure out how to keep in touch. And......" bronzer took a deep breath, "there are many, many details to be worked out." I'll have them send a police officer to get you to the airport, andβ"
Gong Yu put a finger to his lips. "I'm sure you'll arrange everything." She hesitated for a moment and added, "I'll call your house after I make arrangements." β
"Do you need my help with your luggage?"
"Most of the stuff is already packed."
Bronze gave her one last hug.
"Don't forget the best time we've had together." Gong Yu said.
"There will be many more times like this." The bronze waited there, watching Gong Yu enter the house. It wasn't until she closed the door that he turned around and headed for the police car.
"I want to talk to you." When the police car arrived, Officer Blue was waiting at the bronze door. His usually easy-going, thin face stiffened with anger. "I want to know, why are you lying to me!"
"Lying?"
He looked away from the bronze and glanced at the bystanders on the road. "Go inside."
"You've got to tell me what's bothering you."
"Go inside."
Bronze raised his hand and made a gesture of surrender. "Okay, whatever you want."
As they entered, they slammed the door behind them. Then they went to the living room and sat down facing each other.
"I asked you if you were hiding anything from me, and you said you told me everything you could think of." Officer Blue's breath became rapid.
"Not bad."
"Then you're really going to see a doctorβthere's something wrong with your memory," Officer Blue said, "or you wouldn't have forgotten the important thing that you have a connection with the Bureau." β
"Bureau of Investigation?" Bronze was taken aback.
"Damn! Do you have a hearing problem too? That's right, the Bureau of Investigation! An hour ago, the Bureau of Investigation called me at Santa Fe's head and said they wanted to talk to me. I wondered, what did he ask me for? So, when I got to his office and he started talking about the attack on your house, you can imagine how surprised I was. β
Bronze did not dare to speak.
"It's in the hands of the government now, you know? Oh my God, when he told me everything that had happened last night, I opened my mouth wide in amazement and didn't close it for a long time. He knew all the details that only Officer San, me, and a few other cops knew. How did he get all this news? He didn't ask me about last night out of professional curiosity, he didn't need to ask at all, he was telling me everything. Later, he also told me something else - that the Bureau of Investigation wanted me to let them take over the case from now on. β
Bronze remained motionless, fearing that any reaction he made would infuriate Officer Blue even more.
"He told me that the attack on your house involved some extremely sensitive issues. He also told me that the Bureau's interest in the attack was only reported to those who needed to know about it, and that I didn't need to know about it. He warned me that if I insisted on interfering in this matter, it would cause great harm. Officer Blue's eyes lit up with rage. Well, I said to him. Hi, I mean I'm not willing to cause great harm, hopefully it won't happen. I'm a good player like everyone else. I've got rid of this case. Officer Blue strode over to the bronze. But that doesn't mean I can't meddle in this matter in an unofficial capacity, and it doesn't mean that I can't ask you to explain it yourself! Who are you? What happened last night? If you had told me to talk to the Bureau of Investigation in the first place, I wouldn't have made such a fool of myself. Why the hell didn't you tell me? β
Rumble!
With a loud bang, the house trembled.
Hearing a deafening rumble, Bronze and Blue officers looked at each other with a frown.
"What's that noise?" The windows rattled and the dishes clanged. Bronze felt the air pressure change, and it felt like a cotton ball was stuffed into his ears.
"Something exploded!" Officer Blue said, "It's like fromβ"
"It's the other side of the street! Oh my God, you wouldn't think it wasβ" Bronze rushed to the front door, slammed open the door, and saw Officer Sang, who was waiting outside, running into the courtyard.
"It's the house next door!" Officer Sang pointed anxiously and said, "That'sβ"
There was another loud bang that shook them from side to side. Bronze was so shaken by the shockwave of this second explosion that she nearly fell. "Gong Yu!" He straightened up, rushed out the open gate from Officer Sang, and ran into the driveway. The dwarf pines and larches on the right obscured Gong Yu's house, and all he could see was black smoke rising into the air, and the debris of the explosion was falling like a waterfall. Although 100 yards away, Bronze could hear the roar of flames.
"Gong Yu!" Bronze was vaguely aware that Officer Blue and Officer Sang were following him. He can't take care of the police car, and he can't care about the road, he wants to save Gong Yu. He called Gong Yu's name, and his voice was about to burst. He chose the nearest path, rushed to the right, crossed the driveway, and burrowed into the bushes of dwarf pines.
"Gong Yu!" The branches slashed his arm, and the sand creaked beneath his feet. Officer Blue shouted at him, but Bronze could only hear his own rapid gasps. As he made a sharp turn around a tree in front of him, flames mixed with smoke loomed in front of him.
The bushes are gone. Bronze ran to the waist-high wooden fence, grabbed a pillar, jumped over the fence, and landed in Gong Yu's courtyard. The wreckage of the house, shrouded in fire and smoke, appeared in front of him. The choking smell of burnt wood crept into his nostrils, burning his throat and lungs, making him cough.
"Gong Yu!" The flames were whistling, and Bronze could barely hear his own shouts. The ground was littered with broken adobe bricks, and he stumbled along, his eyes pierced from opening his eyes from the smoke. Suddenly, a breeze blew away the smoke, and he saw that the house was only partially on fire, and a corner of the back half of the house had not yet been engulfed in fire, and Gong Yu's bedroom was there.
Officer Blue grabbed Bronze by the shoulder and tried to grab him. Bronze broke free of his hand and rushed towards the back of the house. He climbed over a waist-high low wall, through the wreckage-strewn courtyard, and out of one of his bedroom windows. The window panes had been shattered by the blast wave, leaving only jagged edges. He found an adobe brick at his feet and smashed the broken glass from the window frame.
He was so tired that he was panting. A puff of smoke rolled in, and he couldn't help but swallow a few puffs. He tried his best to control his cough, stuck his head in the window, and looked around. "Gong Yu!" Officer Blue grabbed him again, and he broke free again.
"You let me in!" Bronze shouted loudly, "Gong Yu needs me!" He climbed in through the window and fell to the ground, his shoulder on the broken bricks, and the smoke surrounded him. He stumbled to the bed, only to find it empty. He coughed even harder. He thought that maybe Gong Yu had fallen to the ground, so he fumbled on the floor until he reached the bathroom door and hit the closed door. He thought that Gong Yu must be hiding in the bathroom, and he couldn't help but feel excited. But when he pulled the door open, his heart sank again. Before the smoke could pour in, he saw that the bathtub and shower cubicles were empty.
His vision blurred. He felt so hot that he retreated from the door of his bedroom where the flames were flying. At the same time, the raging fire from the ceiling was also pressing down on him. He fell to the ground and crawled forward, gasping for his breath with difficulty. He felt to the window, struggled to his feet, stuck his head out of the window, and struggled to drill out. Something collapsed behind him, and the heat baked his legs. Immediately after, something broke and fell to the floor. He realized, to his horror, that the beams must have broken and the roof was about to collapse. The heat baked his hips. In a panic, he jumped up and fell out of the window.
Two large hands grabbed him. As the flames rushed out of the window on his heels, the two large hands dragged him out of the burned house. The man was Officer Blue, and he grabbed his bronze shirt, pulled him off the ground, and pushed him over a waist-high wall.
Bronze felt light and fluttery. He slammed to the other side of the wall, rolled on the spot, and crashed into the root of a dwarf pine. Officer Blue jumped up beside him. The flames chased after them and set fire to the pine trees. The branches crackled and snapped, and the tongues of fire jumped higher and higher. Officer Blue dragged him out of the way.
Another tree was set on fire.
"We've got to get a little farther away!" Officer Blue shouted.
The bronze looked back at Gong Yu's house, in the firelight and smoke, the ruins and broken walls were faintly visible, exuding the heat of people. "Ms. Gong is still there!"
"That's all you can help! We've got to get farther away! β
Bronze leaned sideways, breathing hard. Holding back his vomiting, he staggered after Officer Blue through the smoke and down the wooded hillside behind the house. He looked back again, at the horrific sight. "Oh my God, what should I do? Gong Yu! He kept calling, "Gong Yu! β
He was so tired that he was panting. A puff of smoke rolled in, and he couldn't help but swallow a few puffs. He tried his best to control his cough, stuck his head in the window, and looked around. "Gong Yu!" Officer Blue grabbed him again, and this time he didn't break free, but instead looked at the collapsed house in despair.
