Chapter 167: Heavy Truck Cold
At the time when Eder was worried about Kazan Gold, the five-ton heavy truck he asked Volkswagen to develop was already being produced on a large scale in Constanta.
Volkswagen general manager Minoba had actually reported to him, but Eder had left Minoba to handle the preparation plan for Milok and Calust at that time. This disappointed Minoba, who hurried over to report the good news, and thought that the crown prince was dissatisfied with him and planned to find someone to replace him, which made him worry about it for several days.
In mid-October of the 13th year, after half a month of emergency production, the first batch of 1000 five-ton heavy trucks appeared in front of the world. This batch of five-ton trucks can be said to be a radical change from the previous 1.5-ton truck, and the most common change is that the chassis of the vehicle has been strengthened and optimized.
Among them, the clutch, transmission and transaxle are the most changed. Among them, in order to solve the situation of cars driving on complex roads, Volkswagen's R&D department also developed a differential. This solves the problem of unequal speed movement of coaxial wheels caused by difficult turning and driving on complex road surfaces. At the same time, it also reduces the friction between the tire and the ground and prolongs the life of the tire.
All new Volkswagen cars are now equipped with this component, which was invented by the R&D department. It can be said to be a small step forward for the automotive industry, and I believe that other automobile companies will soon learn from Volkswagen's methods.
The differential, which was invented by Louis Renault in 1937 and is now more than 20 years ahead of schedule by Volkswagen, proves that many technologies will not be conformist in the development of automobiles in advance.
Of course, Volkswagen's new five-ton Dongfeng truck is not as popular as the previous one-point-and-five-ton truck. The 1,000 new trucks were sold out after 11 days on the market, disappointing Volkswagen's executives who were waiting for news.
In fact, the reason for this situation is that the price of this heavy truck is more expensive, reaching a price of 550 pounds per truck, which is much more expensive than the 145 pounds of the 1.5-ton Dongfeng truck, which is still selling well. Even if the volume of goods is more than 3 times, it is still too expensive for many transportation owners. On the other hand, the current road situation in Europe is not very good, and only a few roads can run cars, not to mention the heavier five-ton heavy trucks. And now that most of the cargo can be transported in 1.5-ton trucks, 5-ton trucks are a bit premature in addition to the need to transport bulky items.
However, despite the lack of popular support, the military of various countries is very interested in this car.
Among them, General Moltke Jr., chief of the German General Staff, saw this heavy truck and told the people around him. "This is a vehicle specially prepared for the transport of the army, and we should purchase this car with all the requirements for Romanian repayment, which can improve the logistics of our army."
In fact, he did the same, and after observing the new five-ton Dongfeng truck, he approached the Ministry of War on equipment and its purchase, and asked to buy it to enhance the logistics and transportation level of the German army.
From 1866 onwards, in charge of technical and logistical affairs in the War Office, it was a group of conservatives from Old Prussia. The study of the future role of military aircraft, as well as the full use of automobiles and their conversion into armored vehicles, or the use of machine guns or small artillery guns on vehicles as offensive weapons or reconnaissance vehicles, have either been delayed or simply not on the agenda. They seem to be saying that in 1870 the Prussian infantry was not armed with tethered balloons and machine guns, did they not win?
However, in the case of Moltke's insistence and even threatened to go directly to Kaiser Wilhelm II by crossing them, in the end, both sides gave in and decided to purchase 600 units of this new heavy truck to form a transport group to see the effect.
Little Moltke was quite dissatisfied with this, believing that these old antiques of the Ministry of War should be rolled off their posts, these people have long been behind the times and still hold on to the experience of the Franco-Prussian War.
Compared to what happened to Germany, the French army, which was its main rival for the army, was no better. Its commander-in-chief, General Xia Fei, prefers the 1.5-ton Dongfeng truck, which, in his words, helps the French army recruit drivers from the country. Completely ignoring the fact that there is not much difference between the driving operation of 5-ton heavy trucks and 1.5-ton trucks, the French army intends to purchase 350 such heavy trucks to implement its army transport system.
As for Russia, due to the complex road conditions of its Eastern European roads, its 1.5-ton trucks are not too many now, and most of the road transportation is still mainly based on accumulation, so they only plan to buy 100 to try the effect.
The British, on the other hand, were much more generous, but the reason for the purchase was a bit strange, they intended to form a division-sized rapid mobile force to deal with a possible war in Europe. Originally, it was planned to use 1.5-ton trucks as their means of transport, but after seeing the new five-ton trucks, they planned to purchase 800 of these trucks so that all soldiers and equipment could be carried away on four wheels. Just don't know how much of a role a division can play in Europe?
Austria-Hungary and Italy also purchased a small amount of vehicles because of military expenses, and other small countries also bought dozens of vehicles and I bought a little bit of them, and in the end, after these orders were summed up, there were still orders for three or four thousand vehicles, which made the top management of Volkswagen also secretly breathe a sigh of relief. They've already invested almost £1 million on the new car, and it's a joke if they don't get it back.
As for the United States, which is now the largest consumer of automobiles, Volkswagen is not doing anything else at all. First, there was an agreement with Ford before, and it is still profitable for both parties to comply with it, so both parties agree to the current situation. And Volkswagen makes no less money from the Model T than Ford, because the price difference between Volkswagen and the United States is five dollars more expensive than the Model T in Europe, so in order not to break down the relationship between the two parties, this new model, which does not seem to be a success, has to abandon the American market.
Even so, Minoba, the general manager of Volkswagen, felt the need to report the situation to the crown prince. It's not to find a reason, just to let His Highness know that the new car Volkswagen he asked for has been made, and the market response is not good, and I hope His Highness can give less guidance on the development of Volkswagen.
However, his hard work was not accepted by Eder, and when the crown prince met with him, he recognized their work and thought that this was the car he needed. The crown prince vetoed Minoba's hint that he wanted to slow down the construction of a new five-ton heavy-duty truck production line, and asked him to build the two production lines according to the plan, because there would be orders at that time.
In this regard, Minoba can only do what he is told, but he doesn't know where the new orders will come from Volkswagen after completing these orders. In this regard, he plans to let the existing five-ton heavy truck production line produce at the usual speed, as for the order to wait, anyway, Volkswagen has a lot of experience in too many orders.
