Chapter Eighty-Nine: Urban Warfare

Sure enough, the old hairy golden cicada still worked, and about four or five minutes after our rapid evacuation, several explosions broke out in the place where we had just exchanged fire, followed by a dense burst of gunfire, followed by a dense burst of gunfire, but by the time the gunshots and explosions had disappeared, we had evacuated to the edge of the grove, and we could almost faintly see the small buildings outside the forest.

We know that basically our parachute mission is over, we have successfully highlighted the groves, and now we are going to engage in urban warfare.

The streets and alleys of the city are crisscrossed, the buildings are tall, solid, and dense, and the underground engineering facilities are complex, which seriously affects the combat operations of both sides. In this case, the battlefield environment is extremely complicated, especially the advantages of "defense" and "attack."

In urban warfare, the defending side can use tall buildings and underground engineering facilities in all directions to build a strong fortress; A large number of mines and various obstacles can be set up in urban areas; It can be condescending, with point control surface, observation and sniping; Buildings and blocks can be used to organize crossfire. For the attacking side, it is often necessary to attack the fortified points and fight in the streets, coupled with the unknown terrain and enemy situation, it is easy to be ambushed by the enemy and shot coldly.

In urban warfare, due to the limitations of the terrain, troops and weapons mainly move along the roads and the streets and alleys on both sides, so the battle formation is easy to be divided, which is not conducive to the activities of large corps, and small detachments will play a great role. Although our "warrior squad" has conducted dozens of urban combat trainings before and after, it was basically some drills in the training ground, and this is the first time in the city environment. However, in this exercise, our "warrior squad" is the sharp knife of our entire special operations brigade, and urban combat is our first battle in the true sense!

In urban warfare, the mobility of wired telecommunications is not strong, and radio communications, especially VHF and UHF communications, are affected by tall buildings and sound, optical, and magnetic interference, and the signal is not good. Flag language, sign language and other means of communication will be blocked by walls and buildings, making it difficult to communicate; The combat contact area is small, and most of the people who engage the enemy are squads or individual soldiers, and the two warring sides are often separated by a road and a wall, and the troops are scattered, making it inconvenient for command and coordination. Therefore, it is conducive to "fighting alone" rather than joint action, and is "the struggle of real warriors". And in this case, the advantages of our equipment are basically difficult to play.

The close building obscures the line of sight, which limits the field of vision and the range of fire, and there are a large number of blind spots for observation and shooting, which is not convenient for reconnaissance and observation, and it is not convenient for the development of firepower. The alleys are narrow, which is not convenient for the rapid deployment of troops, and for our small detachment, in this environment, it is very easy to be hit by enemy fire, and the risk is relatively large.

Therefore, we must choose several attack directions according to the enemy's situation and terrain conditions, carry out a multi-channel centripetal assault on the enemy, divide it into isolated parts that are isolated from each other, disperse the enemy's defensive forces, make it take care of one thing and lose the other, expose the loopholes, and then annihilate each of them separately, forming a situation of multi-channel attack and dividing the encirclement and annihilation, that is, attacking a certain point of the enemy army with all the strength of our small detachment, adhering to the principle of the shortest time, the greatest firepower, and the greatest damage, and quickly destroying them!

In attacking important targets in urban areas, it is necessary to effectively control the three key points of ground, high-rise buildings, and underground systems according to the characteristics of modern urban residential areas, and carry out three-dimensional assaults. In the course of operations, it is necessary to focus on striking at the enemy's command centers, communications hubs, and heavy troop groups, seizing the enemy's radio and television stations, sabotaging command, and swaying public opinion, so as to achieve a quick victory, reduce casualties, and reduce damage. Do a three-dimensional assault and go straight to the point!

However, the good thing is that the buildings in the city are complex, and there are basements, underground passages, floor plywood, sandwich walls, etc., which can be used to hide and escape when we are surrounded.

For example, in one movie, the second mission of a special forces team is to go to the center of the city to rescue the expatriates in the consulate. Its main combat area is the central area of the city, and its prominent feature is that the space is narrow inside and outside. Although the vegetation in this area is scarce, the roads are narrow, the buildings are densely packed, and the buildings are mostly office buildings and residences, and the interior is also full of rooms and little connecting space, and there is a lack of factories and warehouses that are very spacious and spacious buildings with internal connections.

In the urban evacuation clip, the evacuated convoy was led into the fighting area by bandits, and the convoy was blocked and caught in the middle and could not move, so the evacuees were escorted by the armed police and left the road and entered the factory for shelter. Although the movie is set to be called a factory, the architectural configuration is more similar to an ordinary office building with more rooms and a relatively narrow area, so the whole clip is still a typical battle in the center of the city.

Another outstanding feature of the urban center is that it is completely three-dimensional, which is significantly different from the two-dimensional areas of small towns/settlements, the periphery of the city or the wilderness plains. Most of the buildings in the central area of the city are relatively tall, dense and continuous; It also has a large number of underground facilities, including basements, underground parking lots, sewers and subways, which are often relatively hidden, with large internal spaces and complex structures and connecting passages.

As a result, operations in urban centers are often very complex, both for both the attackers and the defenders. Even after a long period of preparation, the defenders often do not have enough troops to monitor all the high-rises, surfaces, and underground passages, and can only concentrate their forces in the vicinity of the main streets, passages, and buildings, and other passages and buildings will have to be dealt with, including blasting, blocking, minebuilding, or construction. A typical example is that the German army carried out defensive operations during the Battle of Berlin, and in order to ensure that the Soviet army could not use underground facilities to attack, it did not hesitate to flood with water and hid a large number of people's subways and sewers. However, if the defender is familiar enough with the complex terrain, they can use the upper floors and underground passages to implement flexible small squad counterattacks to delay or prevent the attacker from attacking.

Let's take two examples, which are very similar to ours.

In Mogadishu, Somalia, the U.S. military tried to use the Delta Special Forces to carry out airborne special operations and capture the leaders of the anti-Zhengfu Army, but as a result, a large number of militants were caught in a regular operation of medium and low intensity (or mainly light weapons) at any cost (RPG alone fired several thousand rounds), and the special detachment entering the city was almost unable to get out. In the first Chechen war, the Russian army also pinned its hopes on quickly breaking through the walled area, quickly occupying the central area by car, and then completing the operation by suppressing bandits. As a result, intelligence and the determination of the chiefs were completely wrong, and they were ambushed by a large number of well-trained veterans of the former Soviet army in Chechnya, lost a large number of combat detachments and heavy equipment, and were dragged into a long melee that even led to the final defeat.

And this time, our squad infiltrated the city with only two purposes, one was to blow up their main military buildings and create chaos in the rear for them, and the other was to carry out a decapitation operation in a timely manner, anyway, it was a principle, and they couldn't make it better!

After losing a team member from the grove, we also successfully crossed the road next to the grove, because this was only a drill, not a real battle, we could not affect the normal production and life of the local residents, so we continued to take risks for a while, and rushed directly to the middle floor of an abandoned unfinished building.

After we sent four members of the team to stand on guard, the remaining seven of our team members immediately crouched down, took out the military map we had captured from the enemy earlier, and laid it on the ground.

"Comrades, do you have any ideas?" Lao Mao suddenly showed a strange smile. Looking at Lao Mao's smile, I immediately understood, yes, I understand again, after being together for a long time, I can experience any action, what Lao Mao means is, find a place to do it, let them hurt first!
