Chapter 4 "Transactions"
In 1479, the War of the Castilian Succession, which lasted for two and a half years, ended with the defeat of Juana, who rejected her aunt Isabella's offer to marry her son Juan, who had just turned one, and instead went to the convent, renounced all her rights and all claims to the past, present, and future rights of the Kingdom of Colorile inherited from her father, King Enrique.
The decision was painful, because it meant that she had nothing to hope for from now on except to be a princess, and a group of followers who had chosen to remain loyal to her tried to prevent Juana from acceding to these terms, either by suggesting that she could retreat to the Castilian islands in the Atlantic, or by simply leaving Africa, as Moses had done with Egypt, and regrouping in the Castilian colonies of Africa and waiting for another battle.
But perhaps having lost hope for the future after a series of failures, or simply exhausted, Juana rejected the advice of her subordinates and voluntarily renounced her right to the throne, declaring that she would never pursue equal rights again.
In the 20 years that followed, Juana did keep her promise, even if she was encouraged and encouraged more than once to look for an opportunity to raise the banner of orthodoxy on the throne, but she stubbornly refused, much to the disappointment of those people, and after seeing no hope in her, people left her, leaving her alone to live this lonely life that seemed to have resigned to her fate.
It was only now, when Alexander stood in front of her, that Juana had a strange look in her eyes that she had not seen before, and she completely ignored the stunned look of the maid next to her, but slowly moved forward until she was about to touch Alexander, and then she raised her hand and gently stroked Alexander's dark red hair.
"What a miracle," Juana muttered to herself, her gaze a little straight, as if she were not at all in the moment but on what she was thinking, and then she asked under the astonished gazes of those beside her, "then duke, have you seen my father?" β
After asking this, Juana suddenly laughed, she looked at Alexander with an inexplicable strange look, and then said as if talking to herself: "How could you have seen him, according to your age, he was dead when you were born." Yes, you must have said that to others, you are a widow, right? β
Looking at Juana's eyes, which were both sarcastic and mocking, Alexander glanced at the maid next to him, and then glanced at Juana with an inquiring gaze.
"Go and pick out the jewels you like, if you can choose a few things for me," Juana instructed the maid, and then ignored the maid who looked puzzled but had to follow Tiergo out of the room in a daze, and she slowly circled around Alexander until she stood in front of him again, "Tell me who told you about my father's appearance since you yourself have not seen him." β
As she said this, Juana seemed to be a little unconvinced, and tried to stroke Alexander's hair again, but he raised his hand and grabbed his wrist.
"Your hair color is interesting, tell me if it's real, or did you dye it with something?" Juana's gaze was still on Alexander's hair, and then she looked cold, "Let go of me, whoever you really are, this kind of behavior is rude." β
Alexander easily let go of the hand that grabbed Juana's wrist: "Your Highness, please put away your curiosity for the time being, don't you think we should get acquainted again?" β
Juana nodded silently, she took two steps back, and then looked at Alexander with a serious expression: "I am the daughter of King Enrique IV of Castile, his only relative in this world," Juana deliberately accentuated her tone when she said this, which is also the right that she has always refused to give up even though she has decided not to pursue the throne, claiming to be the biological daughter of Enrique IV.
Isabella used the idea that Juana was not the daughter of her brother King Enrique, but the illegitimate son of her mother and someone else, forcing Enrique to revoke Juana's succession to the throne, and then forced Enrique to establish her as crown prince.
This was, of course, an extremely humiliating request for Enrique IV, and for Juana, it was a shadow that haunted her for the rest of her life.
Therefore, no matter where she is, she must emphasize that she is Enrique's biological daughter, which has become an obsession that Juana can never let go, especially whenever she meets Queen Maria, who deliberately ridicules her background in the court of Lisbon, even if she may encounter all kinds of difficulties in the future, she will not hesitate to fight back.
For Juana, this was probably the only evidence she had left to prove who she was.
"My name is Giorgio Modiglo, my mother is Giorgiana de Modillo, Countess of Cosenza, and my uncle is Salen de Modiglo, Count of Naples."
After Alexander finished speaking, he stopped talking, but looked at Juana calmly.
Sure enough, after hearing these names, Juana's expression, which had a hint of sarcasm on her face, slowly became solemn, she thought about something carefully, and when she remembered something, she seemed to open her mouth because of accident.
"Yes, I remember the name, your uncle was the ambassador of Naples to Castile, and your mother ......" she said with a look of sudden realization, "I know your mother, she used to stay with your uncle in Valladolid for a long time, and I even considered her friends at that time, until she suddenly disappeared before my father died. β
Speaking of this, Juana stopped, although there were all kinds of speculations before, she couldn't help but shake her head slightly: "I really didn't think of this, I think all this should be your uncle's plan, including even ......" Juana did not continue, but looked at Alexander again, and then she slowly raised her hand to stroke Alexander's hair, "No matter who your father is, but at least you are really very interested, because you even remember my father's hair color is this reddish blonde, So they gave you hair like that, didn't they? β
Juliana's words made Alexander a little helpless, and he gently held Juana's wrist again so that she would not fiddle with her hair.
"I was born, Your Highness," Alexander said, seeing Juana's surprise and even a hint of inexplicable excitement, Alexander held her hand in front of him, "I think I can greet you again, my sister." β
The solemn look on Juana's face instantly collapsed, her breathing became rapid, and at this moment she instinctively wanted to refuse this title that was unfamiliar to her, but a voice in her heart prevented her from doing so.
Looking at Alexander, who slowly raised his head and looked at her very closely, Juana tried her best to resist the urge to laugh wildly in her heart that seemed to be about to keep roaring, but raised her hand to gently hold Alexander's face, slightly tiptoe and kissed him on the forehead.
"Yes, you can call me that, and I think that's what my father wants to see, and he really wants to have a son of his own." Juana said with a wry smile of unknown meaning on her lips, and then she slowly sat back in her chair, "So tell me now, what are you doing in Portugal?" β
While Juana and Alexander's "siblings" were talking, the maid in the next room was happily selecting the dazzling jewels on the table, which could completely make people's eyes shine.
Most of these jewels come from the East or Africa, and many of them are obtained through Ashulk, so that at least they really look like a group of merchants from the East.
It was evident that both Alexander and Tiego had made the best preparations for this meeting, and it was almost impossible for anyone to find any flaws in their origins.
"Is the merchant a duke?" The maid suddenly stopped what she was busy doing, and asked Tiego who was accompanying her with some curiosity, "I heard Madame call him the Duke of Rometesia, what is that place?" β
"A small place." Tiego replied vaguely, of course he knew that such words would not last long, but when he thought that when people knew about this Duke of Rometesia, there was no need to hide anything.
"These jewels are beautiful," said the maid enviously, knowing that she had to choose for her hostess a few things she might like, and then she could pick out a few knick-knacks she could afford, and that she would not dare to look at the real jewels that seemed to be very expensive, for that would only make her depressed that she could not get them.
Tiego picked up a necklace made of pearls, and he first shone it in the sun, and after seeing the envious but reluctant eyes of the maid, he handed it to the maid: "I think this necklace should be the most suitable for your lady." β
"It's a rare good thing, but it's only for my hostess, and I don't think I can afford such expensive jewelry." The maid glanced at the necklace with some regret, and prepared to put it in the box where the jewelry she had chosen for Juana was stored.
"No, I think this is more suitable for you," said Tiego in a slightly lowered voice, "I beg your pardon for talking about your mistress behind my back, I think that Her Highness Juana is more suitable for those jewels of brilliant colors, and you are more suitable for wearing this pearl necklace, which is known for its white color, both in terms of skin and appearance, and as for the price, I think that if you can say a few kind words in front of Your Highness for my friend as much as this time in the future, it will obviously be enough for you to pay for this jewelry." β
"How can this be, this is a bribe!" The maid was a little uneasy, but instead of refusing, she looked nervously at the door, as if she was afraid of being discovered about the transaction in progress.
"It's not a bribe, it's just friends helping each other, you got beautiful jewelry, and we got His Highness's care, isn't it great?"
The maid seemed to be moved, and she tugged at her sleeves with some hesitation, muttering something in her mouth, and then she nodded suddenly, and turned her back to Tiego.
Tiego smiled and stretched out his hand to hang the pearl necklace around his neck for the maid, looking at the maid who turned around, although she still deliberately looked serious, but it was difficult to hide the joy between her eyebrows, Tiego's mind had already flown to the next door at this time.
Thinking of the enemies and rivals that the Duke was about to face, although he was well aware of the series of miraculous victories Alexander had created before, Tiego felt that this time they were facing an enemy that had never been more powerful than ever.
Isabella, Queen of Castile, is a legend of the Iberian Peninsula.
When she openly defied the orders of her half-brother Henrique IV and married Ferdinand of Aragon, few people would have imagined that this young princess would again perform a series of brilliant feats in the next twenty years, except that she knew that the princess had a stubborn and courageous character.
From the moment she defeated Juana to become Queen of Castile, Isabella showed extraordinary means and determination, believing that the Reconquista, which had lasted for more than two centuries, would end in her generation, and for this reason she bravely waged war against the Moorish kingdoms that had occupied the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula for centuries. He also became the staunchest supporter of Isabella's side.
When the last Moorish kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula was destroyed, Isabella quickly sent priests and nuns, built churches and established dioceses in places that had been occupied for too long and had a strong pagan atmosphere.
This series of measures gave Queen Isabella an almost fanatical adoration among her people, who saw her as a saint who expelled the heathens, a warrior who defended Christendom, and a monarch who was stern and impartial, making her in Castile popularity unmatched.
"Maybe we've all gone crazy." Tiego thought to himself, he thought that at least he might be crazy, because with the wealth he had now, he could enjoy a lifetime of wealth without taking such a risk, but he still followed Alexander all the way without fear of darkness.
Of course, because he has no way out, Tiego knows in his heart that in fact, in his heart, this is also his own willingness.
Like Prato, Tiego not only wants to make a fortune, but also wants to one day make his descendants stand out, and this is clearly a huge opportunity with unimaginable rewards if it succeeds.
But even now, Tygo doesn't know the most crucial truth of his adventure.
In Tiego's view, Alexander's apparent intention was to support Juana to regain the throne, which seemed indeed difficult, but with Alexander's careful arrangement and Tiego's careful implementation, this conspiracy under the nose of Queen Maria slowly became a reality.
Juana had left the convent of the previous one, albeit in a different place, but it was far away from the palace to avoid the eyes of Maria and her spies, and because of the preparations, Tiego had already made a relationship with the officers in the barracks near the monastery of Maria de mercy.
It can be said that as long as there are no accidents, Juana's activities here are safe, and because of the dissatisfaction with the queen, some Portuguese nobles and military officers are likely to become her allies.
Thinking about it, Tiego couldn't help but feel that maybe all this was not so far away, and if he could help Juana ascend to the throne of Castile, then what awaited him was a completely different future and identity.
Compared to Tiego, who even now does not know that Alexander is actually trying to claim the crown of the Iberian Peninsula for himself, Juana is obviously much calmer and smarter.
Looking at the young man sitting opposite, Juana's expression had regained her previous solemnity and a slight indifference, she did not know much about this young man, although she had heard some from Tiego, but this did not completely convince her.
In addition, looking at the hair that was similar to her father's slightly reddish blonde hair in her impression, Juana couldn't help but ask in her heart for a while, is this young man really her half-brother?
Regarding the relationship between George Anne and her father, Juana recalled all the things at this time, but she had some new understanding.
She could already be sure that the real purpose of George Anne's deliberate friendship with her was to get close to her father, and the thought of that Neapolitan woman had become her father's lover in front of so many people, whether she was actually pregnant or gave birth to a child, was enough to surprise Juana and not be angry because of it.
On the contrary, Juana even had to make a big deal about it if necessary, because only in this way could it be proved that his father, Enrique IV, was not in some ways incompetent as Isabella said, and only in this way could the rumor that she was not Enrique's own daughter could be broken.
For this, Juana must also admit that the young man in front of him is his half-brother.
It was a deal, and Juana understood it from the beginning.
Thinking of this, Juana suddenly sighed.
"Your uncle LenΓ§a de Mordillo is a real man of vision, and he has probably seen the situation since then, and he knows that I will not refuse to admit your identity, because to do so would be tantamount to denying myself," Juana said with a cold expression, "but you need to understand that this does not mean that I really accept your identity. β
"Of course, dear sister." Alexander was unimpressed by Juana's indifference, knowing that some things might fool most people, but some people were well known.
However, after Juana said this, Alexander could not help but re-examine Count Modiglo's plan, and then he found that as she said, Mordillo's plan can be said to be indeed perfect, at least as long as he still wants to borrow the banner of Enrique's lineage, no matter what he thinks, he will definitely support his Juana status as a "half-brother".
"Now tell me what you are going to do," said Juana, with an impassive expression, "you should know that Isabella is now unshakable in Castile, so how are you going to overthrow her and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon?" β
"It's a problem," Alexander honestly acknowledged the strength of the enemy, and then he continued, "but we don't need to provoke the two kings so early, let's start with their daughters." β
