Chapter 605: Borchescu Experimental Aircraft Carrier

The disputes between Romania and the Soviet Union abroad did not affect the construction at home, but as the Romanian navy, it still built its own warships in an orderly manner.

Today, a strange-looking flat-topped ship is sailing on the Black Sea, and several destroyers are escorting it around it.

Anyone who knows anything about warships will know that this is an aircraft carrier that has only just been launched.

Speaking of the invention of aircraft carriers that cannot fly without airplanes, this kind of machine that can fly freely in the sky has become an indispensable part of the military since its birth with its rapid movement ability. As a navy, it is natural that it will not turn a blind eye to it, so there have always been naval personnel who have studied it.

On November 14, 1910, American pilot Eugene Erie flew the Curtis biplane from a 25.3-meter-long, 7.3-meter-wide wooden platform attached to the front of the cruiser Birmingham. On January 18, 1911, Erie piloted the plane and successfully landed on the platform installed at the rear of the armored cruiser "Pennsylvania" in a berthed state, using the tail hook to hook the brake cable. These two brave practices confirmed the possibility of taking off and landing aircraft on the ship, marking the birth of the prototype of the aircraft carrier.

On May 2, 1912, British Navy Captain Gregory successfully took off and landed planes on a battleship. These successful practices led to the birth of British naval aviation, and a new branch of the armed forces began to appear in the naval sequence.

These are just the new equipment that can be used to board warships and become their reconnaissance and correction of artillery schools. And in the First World War, the combat capabilities of submarines were increasingly revealed. In order to give full play to the unique reconnaissance and anti-submarine capabilities of aircraft, the British Navy first began the development of aircraft carrier modifications. They first converted a coal carrier into an aircraft carrier and named it "Ark Royal".

Although on the surface, the "Ark Royal" can be called the world's first aircraft carrier, strictly speaking, it is actually a "seaplane carrier". Because the land planes took off and landed on the ship at that time, the danger was greater, so the "Ark Royal" carried a seaplane that could take off and land on the water, and the aircraft was hoisted to the surface by the lifting boom on the mothership and then took off, and the plane was recovered to the deck after landing on the water.

Precisely because seaplanes did not take off and land directly on ships, the decks on the original aircraft carriers were small. The take-off and landing methods of carrier-based seaplanes are not only troublesome and time-consuming, but also inevitably break the aircraft. So while using the above methods, people began to explore having planes take off and land directly from warships. At that time, the planes were basically all biplanes, with light weight and short take-off and landing distances, which provided the possibility for planes to take off and land directly on the deck of warships.

In 1918, at the end of World War I, the British Navy dismantled the main turrets on the front and aft decks of a large cruiser "Fury" and paved a wooden flight runway, bounded by a superstructure in the middle of the deck, with a runway in the bow for aircraft to take off and a runway in the stern for aircraft to land. As a result, the "Fury" became the first aircraft carrier converted from a warship with the function of aircraft take-off and landing.

In September 1918, the British Navy converted a passenger liner under construction into an aircraft carrier USS Hundred-Eyed with an all-access flight deck. During the refit, the original chimney of the Hundred-Eyed Giant was completely dismantled and converted into a horizontal exhaust flue from below the main deck to the end of the bowl. Since the entire flight deck is very flat and empty, and there is hardly any superstructure in sight, this new model of aircraft carrier, also known as the flat prototype aircraft carrier.

At this time, the aircraft carrier was basically modified from other warships, and it was not until the birth of the Fengxiang that the first real aircraft carrier was produced.

In December 1922, the first aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy, the "Hosho", was born, which was not refitted, but was built according to the design of an aircraft carrier from the beginning, so it is considered the world's first real aircraft carrier.

With the advent of the Fengxiang, many aircraft carriers such as the British Athletic God and the American Lexington have begun to appear, and there are many aircraft carriers in the world today. As a Black Sea country, Romania has only just begun its path to aircraft carriers.

As the soul of later generations, Eder certainly knew the power of the aircraft carrier, but unfortunately, the position of Romania put the aircraft carrier in an awkward position. Italy's Mussolini said that the Italian bureau is the largest aircraft carrier, and this sentence is that he does not have a clear understanding of the future. Then Eder said that the Black Sea could not accommodate aircraft carriers, then this is the real situation.

In the Black Sea, which is 1,150 kilometers long from east to west and 611 kilometers wide from north to south, the role of aircraft carriers is minimized. Within two steps of going out, we reached the range of the enemy's shore-based aircraft, and the consumption of carrier-based aircraft and shore-based aircraft is definitely a manifestation of a hole in the brain.

That's why the Romanian Navy is so obsessed with traditional warships such as battleships and cruisers. And Eder couldn't do the thing of a cow not drinking water and pressing his head, so the road of Romania's aircraft carrier has been delayed until now.

As for the Borchescu, it was also promoted by Eder, and the navy has been strong in males in recent years, so it was rebuilt with a fast freighter.

Tear down all the superstructures and replace them with thick planks, and the Borchescu is a completely flat prototype aircraft carrier. Although the Borchescu is a plain aircraft carrier, the interior space modification can carry 24 combat aircraft. Among them, 12 Haihao fighters were transformed from Goshawk III fighters, mainly to strengthen the landing gear and install tail hooks. There were also 12 Ripon carrier-based torpedo machines, which had not been developed in Romania before, so they were purchased from the UK.

This Ripon carrier-based torpedo aircraft, length: 11.20 meters, wingspan: 13.67 meters, height: 3.91 meters, empty weight 1978KG, maximum take-off weight 3350KG, can carry an aviation torpedo. Its flight performance is the maximum level flight speed: 179km/h, range: 660km, practical ceiling: 3050m.

The responsible one said that this aircraft was a product that was to be ahead of its time. But who let Romania not study the torpedo machine before, so it can only make up for it.

And this time there were several Peng carrier-based torpedo planes parked at the end of the deck of the Borchescu, which looked like they were going to conduct flight test tests.

"The wind is favorable, and you can take off."

As the commander waved vigorously with the yellow hand flag, the test pilot quickly started the plane. The plane jumped off the deck after accelerating.

"It worked."

The officers and sailors on the deck immediately cheered for this.

Later, several planes were also released off the deck, which made the people at the scene cheer for this. Although they had seen planes take off many times, there were still not many warplanes on the deck, and they were to be happy about it. Because taking off on the deck, the requirements for the pilot are much higher, and not experienced pilots are not trained and can not do this at all. And even veterans have made mistakes, so every successful flight is a test of the newly formed carrier-based aviation of the Navy.

There is no way, after all, the aircraft carrier is not comparable to the land, and its deck length cannot be compared with the land. Therefore, at present, the naval carrier-based aviation units of all countries in the world are all outstanding.

And Major Fernandez, who was the captain of the ship, was also watching the flight from the sidelines. Fernandez is one of the few navies in the navy, but unlike other countries. Fernández argued that the navy needed a large number of aircraft to ensure reconnaissance and artillery training to ensure that the Romanian navy could keep track of enemy movements at all times. Of course, let him make such a claim, it is still too restrictive for aircraft carriers in the Black Sea.

However, although he was not optimistic about the aircraft carrier in the Black Sea, when he took over the position of vice captain, he still devoted himself to it. During the day, the training of officers and pilots is managed, and at night materials on the use of aircraft carriers by other countries are studied. In just half a year, Fernandez's understanding of aircraft carriers has reached the highest level in the navy (as if he is the captain of an aircraft carrier).

And this test flight is just the beginning of the aircraft carrier training, and a lot of training is waiting for them in the future. Fernandez, on the other hand, needs to watch his officers and men show the results of their training, but they still have plenty of time to train. It is believed that in the future Romanian carrier-based aviation will not be the only one.
