Chapter 35: On the Praying Mantis and the Yellow Sparrow
According to Pablo's own account, they retreated in a northwestern direction of the village. Originally, Carl was going to let Balcas contact us directly after we arrived, but by now it was nightfall, and Carl and Pablo had lost contact. This certainly made our search more difficult, and as we moved deeper into the guerrilla territory after nightfall, there were more and more traces of human activity in the area.
At first, it was just people passing by the grass, broken branches and some discarded items, such as food packaging, cigarette butts, and cigarette cases. But then there were signs of fighting, craters on the ground, broken or burned trees, large broken trunks, and of course blood and corpses, as well as damaged abandoned weaponry and bullet casings.
The corpses were guerrillas, and there were not many of them, and it seems that the strength of resistance here was limited. Maybe this is simply luring Pablo to go deeper. Maybe the scene around that village would be very scary, because it was the real battlefield, and Pablo was already defeated there. I suddenly remembered the oil bottle and Pinto, maybe they were sunk somewhere.
We continued southwest, and by about midnight we began to faintly hear gunshots. The gunfire was not intense, perhaps due to the fact that it was too far away from us at night. So far, let's not say that we have found any clues to Pablo, even if they are alive, and we have not encountered a single one.
We continued in the direction we set out, just after midnight. John motioned for the group to stop, and he looked around, as gunfire rang from the south at a much faster pace than before.
"I'm going to contact Carl and ask him to ask about the current form here." John said and motioned for everyone to disperse their guards, and he took the satellite phone to communicate.
After a moment, John looked at us and said, "Let's move on." Carl did not hear from Pablo there. He also said that some of the self-defense forces had withdrawn from the fighting, but not in the direction of the banks of the river that we had planned, and that it was probably some of the terrified rich men who had fled with his own men. ”
"If we continue like this, we will probably be surrounded." I whispered.
John nodded, "Not probably, I think we'll be sure that after dawn we'll find guerrillas all around." After he finished speaking, he let out a long sigh, "Damn it." Let's move on. If we still can't find it after noon tomorrow, and Pablo is dead, or has already retreated, or there is no news, we will withdraw. ”
The second half of John's words reassured me a little, and although I knew that the danger of retreating at noon tomorrow would be no less, I finally had some peace of mind.
We set off again, this time moving at a fast pace. We are in a hurry, and the guerrillas will undoubtedly launch a massive pursuit at daybreak, when the area will be very lively, and we will be even more dangerous.
But until three o'clock in the morning, we still didn't find Pablo or even the slightest hint of pointing. John stopped the line again. I looked at John, who was anxious at the moment, for if he had to retreat at noon, then we would have to start moving back after daybreak.
"Let's go another hour. If we don't meet Pablo or the wizard's team at four o'clock, we'll go back and look for it on the way. John whispered.
After we all said yes, we got up again and prepared to go. Suddenly there was movement in the direction of our eleven, and John immediately raised his hand to signal us to stop.
We've all noticed the movement there, and it looks like there's quite a lot of people. We each picked up our guns and prepared for battle.
"Don't worry, guys." John said softly to us as he stared.
After a while, several people rushed out of the woods, followed by a group of people, who seemed to be carrying someone in the middle of the procession and quickly headed north.
"It looks like Pablo." Walker said softly.
"Don't worry. Maybe it's some other rich man. John didn't move and continued to watch.
A few people came out of the group at the end, and these people looked behind from time to time, apparently to see if the pursuers behind them were following up. Counting these last few, there are almost twenty people. Although it was not certain that it was Pablo, it was definitely the guerrillas who were chasing these people.
"Don't you stop them?" Ariel, who hadn't spoken for a long time, spoke.
"Nope. Look who's behind him. "John saw the last of the men running in front of us as well, and soon disappeared into the woods, signaling us to disperse our ranks and prepare for battle.
About three minutes later, there was movement again from the woods, this time with the same number of people who appeared in our field of vision first, and quite a few more from the movement in the woods behind them.
The dozen or so people who came out first walked to a place about forty or fifty meters away from us and stopped, one of them squatted on the ground and touched the footprints of what was supposed to be the one who was suspected to be Pablo, and then stood up and said something in Spanish, and the other said a word to the person behind him, and then the team apparently picked up speed and began to prepare to move forward.
"Ready to get started. Regardless of whether they are chasing Pablo or not, kill them first, and it is better to catch one alive. With that, John raised his gun and began to aim.
The pursuing party came out of the woods with a total of about thirty men, and as they picked up speed, the group began to compress into the middle, which made me feel a little excited, because doing so would undoubtedly increase the casualties in the event of an ambush.
"Da-da-da-da." John hit a short spot first, and at the same time we opened fire on the guys.
The first to be hit were the men who came out of the woods, bullets pouring into their ranks, and in the blink of an eye, they fell in pieces. And those who came out of the forest first immediately turned back and prepared to fight back, but we have Walker waiting for them to turn back, and his sniper rifle kept ringing, so that those people could not even lift their heads without saying that they could not fight back.
"Change the magazine."
John yelled and retracted his body and began to change the magazine. And after him, we were all about to run out of bullets in the magazine.
"With grenades. Then push! John quickly changed the magazine and called out to everyone.
I ran out of bullets, pulled out my grenade, and looked at Ariel, who was also pulling out a grenade next to me, "Cover shot!" Hand grenade! ”
John heard me shouting and shouted "cover shot" as he dodged and started shooting, and I took the opportunity to get up with Ariel and threw the grenade over.
"Grenade! Take cover! "I threw it out and screamed and fell down.
After hearing only two explosions, John leaned out and fired two shots, "Advance!" Kill them! So saying, he got up and went out with the men.
After the grenade exploded, I quickly changed the magazine, got up and shouted: "Cover fire!" "Ariel and I were shooting at the guerrillas who had suffered heavy losses, hitting targets that were still active.
And those who walked in front of this group disappeared into the woods after losing a few people, and should have run. After they fled, some of the people in front of us who were alive began to retreat. We did not intend to pursue, and watched them disappear into the woods after making sure they were not prepared to resist.
I walked up to the middle of the guerrilla fighters who were being beaten on their backs, I crouched down and looked up and said, "These people are not wizards. ”
John looked at these people and said, "I know it without you saying it." See if there are any alive. ”
"There's still a gas here." Walker said as he kicked the weapon of the man lying at his feet away, pulling his hands away.
John walked over and crouched down to look at the man. This person's injuries are not very serious, it is okay to see him panting or something, there are wounds on his shoulders and the right side of his chest, but in this place where there is no village in front of the village and no store in the back, even if it is saved, there is not much hope. After all, if the lungs are punctured, it is not a simple matter of chirping, there is also internal bleeding.
John asked the man in Spanish, and the man looked frightened, his voice trembling, his teeth as if they were fighting. After John had spoken it twice, the man replied with difficulty. John nodded, stood up and shot the man before saying, "This man only knows that they are chasing a big man, and he doesn't know if it's Pablo or not." However, it was the one from the wizarding team who led them, and it should be that hash? Davey's guys. ”
"Damn. Let that guy run! Walker said gloomily.
John shook his head, "Nothing. At least we can be sure that we're close to the wizard. And the team on the run is likely to be Pablo. ”
I looked around and said, "How do I feel like the wizard is like us, like waiting for something." According to normal logic, he should be behind him, but like the last time we saved Pablo, it was not him who was behind him. ”
"Hmph. Are you saying that wizards are still playing the old tricks of the past? Isn't that just right? Ariel spoke.
"Let's not join up with Pablo or anyone else in front of us, we'll walk slowly behind and wait for the wizard to make a move." John said and looked at the sky, "It's going to be dawn soon." Maybe the wizard is already not far ahead. Walker, did you notice the direction of the leader's escape? ”
Walker nodded, "North to west." ”
So we chased after us to the north, but we didn't go far when gunfire was heard in front of us. This time the gunfire is not far from us. John motioned for us to slow down, and we all dispersed, moving in the direction closest to us, but just as we adjusted our direction, Ariel, who was walking in front of me to the left, suddenly burst into a mist of blood on his head, and the whole person fell backwards, and then a gunshot was heard, and soon another shot was heard.
