48. Mountain Division
The Mountain Infantry Division was the elite of the Imperial Army, and of course its status was not as good as the famous armored units of the Imperial Army, but its training and physical requirements were more demanding than that of ordinary infantry units. Recruit training was very tiring and always exhausting, and Ling Kaiyue fell asleep almost every day shortly after dinner.
But everyday life was always full of simple happiness and longing for participation in the war, and whenever she recalled this period of life after the war, Ling Kaiyue could not understand why she was so elated and eager to participate in the war at that time.
Perhaps it is the male animal that has just come of age who is eager to prove his genes as quickly as possible.
The newly formed 11th Mountain Infantry Division of the Imperial Army was subordinate to the 4th Mountain Infantry Corps of the Imperial Army under the command of Lieutenant General Sun Henian, and the division commander was Major General Wei Bingqian, a senior officer who had just been transferred from the Coastal Defense Command to serve in the Imperial Army.
Like other mountain infantry divisions in the Imperial Army, the 11th Mountain Division also had only two infantry regiments, the main establishment was the 181st Mountain Infantry Regiment and the 182nd Mountain Infantry Regiment and the 11th Mountain Artillery Regiment and the 11th Mountain Mechanized Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, the 11th Mountain Anti-Tank Artillery Battalion, the 11th Mountain Air Defense Artillery Battalion, the 11th Mountain Engineer Battalion and the 11th Mountain Guard Communications Battalion, plus the troops directly under the division headquarters, with a total strength of 14,652 troops.
After the mechanization of the Imperial Army, which began in 302 of the Republic, the mountain troops also eliminated all the original mules and pack horses. The cavalry was reorganized into a light mechanized infantry division, but due to the characteristics of mountain warfare, the mountain troops were not equipped with heavy equipment such as heavy trucks, heavy artillery and medium tanks, and the transport vehicles were mainly light off-road trucks, jeeps, light tracked transporters and motorcycles, and even the armored reconnaissance battalion was equipped with MT38 light tanks and light tracked infantry fighting vehicles produced by the Škoda plant.
At the end of March 306, the 11th Mountain Infantry Division was transferred by train to a barracks near Da Nang, Jiaozhou. This was originally the station of the 3rd Marine Division, and the conditions and facilities of the barracks were relatively good, with hot showers and other more comfortable conditions. However, the barracks was now overcrowded, and more than 50,000 men of the 4th Mountain Army were crowded into the barracks, and many troops had to set up tents and camp.
The 4th Mountain Army is preparing for overseas operations, and Da Nang is one of the assembly and transfer points for troops to fight abroad, and the food is better than when they were in the training camp before. The entire unit began to re-equip, and all the soldiers were issued with new clothing and new weapons and equipment. They went to the range for several days on end to check and familiarize themselves with the new automatic rifles and machine guns. In the training camp they used the old Manlisa infantry, but now they have changed to semi-automatic rifles and the latest automatic rifles, which are also equipped by the Empire's front-line combat units, and some clever and well-informed people have realized from this that the troops are really going to fight on the front line.
But where are they going? No one knows. Speculation and gossip spread rapidly through the company.
In mid-July, the 11th Mountain Infantry Division assembled in regimental formations and was transported to Koper Pier by trucks sent by the battalion, where the officers and men, armed with bags and weapons, disembarked from the trucks and lined up in single lines to board the troop carriers converted from ocean liners.
Their artillery, vehicles and other equipment have already been loaded onto several transport ships.
The 3,164 officers and men of the 182nd Infantry Regiment boarded the ocean-going passenger ship, which was originally capable of carrying only 1,200 passengers, in a day. For many young soldiers, it was their first time on a boat and the first time they went abroad, and everything felt fresh.
At dusk, under the tugboat tow, the "Yongyuan" slowly left the dock, and the ship's diesel engine began to rattle, and slowly sailed into the South China Sea amid cheers.
Many young men waved goodbye to the people on the shore and began their long journey to war.
From Da Nang to Star Port, it is more than 1,200 nautical miles, and this transport fleet needs to sail at sea for more than 4 days.
The "Yongyuan" is a troop carrier converted from an old passenger liner, and because more than 3,000 soldiers are crammed into this ship, the cabin is too crowded, and only two people can share a bed, and many people can only sleep underground or on the deck at night, and the living conditions are very bad. Everyone had to wear life jackets all day long, and those who slept were not allowed to take off their clothes, and the water bottle and bullet belt were also carried together, making a constant bumping sound.
The daily activity of the officers and men consisted of walking around the deck, leaning on the railing and watching the warships escorting them, or gambling in the cabins. Although gambling is explicitly prohibited above, the practice of gambling in the barracks is repeatedly prohibited, and most of the time the officers can only let it go, turn a blind eye, pretend not to know, and everyone's allowance is not much anyway.
"Hyatt, I heard Wang Dong say that you were born in a navy family, why don't you go to serve on a warship?" Ling Kaiyue and a few comrades-in-arms were leaning on the railing, Shi Guohao looked at a graceful cruiser sailing on their right with an envious look, and then said to Ling Kaiyue.
"On a warship? Oh, you've only been on the ship for two days and you're feeling a little unbearable, do you know how boring life is for the sailors on a warship? Sometimes you don't see a single green for two or three months when you go to sea, and there is such a monotonous gray and blue in front of you, and some people have fought all their lives and have never seen what the enemy looks like. Do you think about the boring artillerymen, have they seen what the enemy looks like? It's still the infantry's enjoyment, the muzzle of the gun is pointed at the enemy, and as soon as the finger is snapped, you can see the enemy fall in the crosshairs. This is the true meaning and fun of fighting, do it yourself! ”
"Oh, Hyatt, seeing how excited you are, I don't know what it's like to be killed?" Meng Xianliang stood aside and laughed.
"Whoever fears death, in fact he is dead!" Ling Kaiyue blurted out a famous sentence.
The unit, which had planned to go to South America for counterinsurgency operations, received a new order and was ordered to move to West Asia.
At the end of January, the Great Food Empire and the Byzantine Empire, which had been watching from the sidelines at the beginning of the war, joined the European alliance and declared war on the Tang Empire. As the scale of the war continued to grow, the 4th Mountain Army, originally planned to South America, was redeployed to the Persian Gulf to strengthen the Empire's military presence there in order to secure the Empire's important crude oil producing areas......
