Chapter 364: Annan's Affair

At the end of May, the second batch of 1,700 African reinforcements arrived in Annam, and Po Slip immediately issued an order to send troops, according to the pre-plan, Major General Lisby and himself to lead an army to attack the area controlled by the Hue court and the Nanyang Army.

On May 27, a series of battles broke out between the French colonial army and the Nanyang Army around the city of Hanoi, and by June 14, the war was in a stalemate.

"On the 27th, I led all the troops that could be mobilized: 2,000 marines, 600 Algerian soldiers, 1,700 indigenous soldiers of Annan, 800 African colonial soldiers, a total of more than 5,000 soldiers, carrying heavy artillery

Fourteen guns and eight Gatling guns launched an attack on the enemy.

On the left flank, Colonel Livion attacked the well-defended frontal fortifications of 4,000 Chinese and, after seven days of fighting, returned at night.

In the middle, Captain Corona occupied the fortifications along the river near Hanoi City, advanced to the northern outskirts of Hanoi City, and fought fiercely with the Chinese army for several days, unable to break through the defensive line set up by the Chinese army.

Returned on the evening of June 12.

On the right flank, Colonel Bishuo, supported by all the boats, advanced along the Red River, bombarded the enemy's batteries by the regular team, and captured the fortified tower temple. At the gap in the embankment, the colonel let half of the soldiers board the gunboats, and some of the gunboats were moored next to the tower temple.

On the 11th, the Chinese army sent 5,000 troops out of the city to fight for the tower temple, Colonel Bishuo ordered the gunboats to bombard closely, killing and wounding more than 1,000 Chinese troops, and the next day, because the Chinese army continued to increase its troops, the number of troops exceeded the French army by ten times, Colonel Bishuo had no choice but to lead the gunboat formation to meet the marines and evacuate the tower temple. ”

In a report sent to mainland France, Wave Slip argued that

Although the French army suffered more than 400 casualties in the attack on Hanoi, more than 400 marines, more than 500 black African soldiers, and more than 1,000 indigenous soldiers in Annam, it also caused at least 7,000 casualties to the Chinese army.

Therefore, considering that the Chinese army was well-equipped and numerous, in order to destroy the Chinese army in the northern part of Annam, it was necessary for the French mainland to send two more divisions, at least 20,000 regular troops, to reinforce the governor's palace of Cochinchina.

Slippery's report on the Battle of Hanoi did not convince the local side.

Within the French government, many officials believed that the battle was not a victory but a heavy defeat.

On June 16, the French government received an authentic telegram from the Far Eastern Fleet.

The telegram reads: "The column led by Wave Slippery, after crossing the Shangqing Fang,

The left flank of this column, guarded by George's company, went all the way to Phuai, where no enemy was encountered, and it was expected that there would be serious resistance, for our reconnaissance reported that a large force was stationed in the village.

In Phuai, with not a single Chinese in sight and not a single Annam in sight, Commander Bo was triumphant, thinking that he could at least easily reach the city of Hanoi, but was so happy that he forgot to call for serious reconnaissance.

When the main force of the troops reached the vicinity of Wangcun, they were met with fierce fire from the blockhouses cleverly hidden behind the bamboo fence, and the commander turned his head and was at a loss.

The troops were spread out in scattered lines, but to no avail. The fortifications of the Chinese army stretched for several kilometers and consisted of three lines of defense: trenches, traps, and pillboxes. Behind the fortifications, more than 10,000 Chinese troops fired heavily at our soldiers, and many of our soldiers were killed or wounded. There, Lieutenant Colonel Ogan and Major Caron were shot and killed, while more than 200 Marines and more than 400 black African soldiers were killed by shells and Gatling guns.

The Chinese army was armed with dozens of artillery, and the French army could not resist, so the commander ordered a retreat, and when the troops withdrew to Shangqingfang, the number was less than 600 men, and it did not take long for the Chinese army to pursue us with heavy strafing and intensive artillery fire. It was only at five o'clock in the evening that he managed to escape from the pursuit of the Chinese army. ”

Military intelligence came one after another. In the early stage of the Hanoi Campaign, the French offensive was frustrated, with a total of nearly 2,000 casualties, and the adventurous legion defending the city, taking advantage of the opportunity of the French army's protracted battle and low morale, launched a counterattack less than five hours later, but because of the changes in the Hue court, temporarily gave up the battle to pursue the French army under the Po Slip Division, and instead transferred a part of the elite troops to reinforce Hue, the seat of the Annam Imperial Court, by boat.

Two weeks ago, the commander of the French Chinese Naval Fleet, Rear Admiral Lisby, led 1,000 marines and nearly 1,000 reinforced African colonial soldiers to land from Da Nang and rampage all the way to the Hue Imperial Court.

On June 14, after more than ten days of fierce fighting, the French army occupied the fortress on the outskirts of Hue City - Thuan An Fort, and tens of thousands of Annam defenders were defeated by the French army and fled to Hue Wangcheng in embarrassment.

In the afternoon of the same day, Emperor Side hurriedly issued an edict from King Qin, ordering Huang Zuoyan and other generals in the Beiban region to gallop to reinforce, and at the same time, for the Nanyang Army that defeated the French attack several times, Emperor Side did not care about the contradictions between the two sides some time ago, and pleaded for support.

If the city of Hue falls, the French hold Emperor Duc hostage, and order the whole territory of Annam to give up resistance, then the Nanyang army will be in a very critical situation, therefore, the first time he received the letter of help from the Hue court, Mai Dong Xing reluctantly gave up the low-hanging fruit, and dispatched troops as quickly as possible to reinforce them.

On June 18, Li Wencai led more than 2,000 Nanyang legionnaires to the outskirts of the royal city of Hue and exchanged fire with the French army.

On June 20, the follow-up reinforcements of the Nanyang Corps and the local reinforcements of Annam arrived one after another, and the French commander Lisby was unwilling to evacuate, and while leading his troops and fleet to confront the Qinwang army, he urgently ordered troops to be sent to support.

At the end of June, the war in Annam was slow to progress, and the French colonial army continued to fight with the Nanyang Army and various Annam government forces, and the number of casualties among soldiers increased significantly, but the day of victory was far away.

On July 3, in order to resolve the Annam impasse, the French government chose to compromise with the Han side, offering sovereignty over the French Polynesian Islands and recognition of the Han Congo colony in exchange for a commitment to the gradual withdrawal of the Nanyang Corps from the Kitasaka region.

According to the agreement between the two parties, the Nanyang Legion and its Chinese armed forces were all withdrawn from the Annam area before 1884, and the French government purchased the property, land, and mineral resources owned by the Han side in Annam, including the Hongji coal mine, at market valuation.
