Chapter 35 Yuan Shikai Suo Xiangshan Three Treasures
Yuan Shikai was born on August 20, 9th year of Xianfeng (September 16, 1859) of Wenzong of the Qing Dynasty, and when he was 6 years old, his adoptive father Yuan Baoqing found an enlightenment teacher Yuan Zhizhong to teach him the Four Books and Five Classics. In the 5th year of Tongzhi (1867), Yuan Baoqing worked as a Taoist in Shandong, Yuan Shikai was 8 years old at the time, and he also accompanied him, and then Yuan Baoqing was transferred from Shandong to Jiangsu. In Nanjing, one of Yuan Shikai's teachers, Qu Nuan, was good at martial arts and taught Yuan Shikai some boxing and swordsmanship. Yuan Shikai has loved the art of war since he was a child, and is determined to learn the "ten thousand enemies", and he said that "the three armies cannot take the commander, if I can master 100,000 elite soldiers, I can run rampant in the world." He often spared no expense to collect and buy various versions of military books and war strategies, and was ridiculed as a nerd of Yuan. When he was 13 years old, Yuan Shikai once made a joint "Daye Dragon Fang Sting, Central Plains Deer is Fat", with only 10 words, comparable to the "He can take his place" of the overlord of Chu, which seems to be the same in the world.
When Yuan Shikai was studying in Beijing, Li Hongzhang was serving as the governor of Zhili. Yuan Shikai admired the prominent position of this great man, and under the influence of the Westernist school's idea of "training troops to be strong," he was fond of reading military books, paying attention to current affairs, and often making military arguments, and talking extravagantly about training troops "inside and outside." Uncle Yuan Baoling was quite appreciative of his discussion, and couldn't help but say that the Yuan family "has a lot of heirs, and they can also be comforted".
Due to various reasons, after Yuan Shikai's hopes in the field were dashed, he burned his poems and essays and decided to join Li Hongzhang's Huai Army. He said: "The eldest husband should serve the field, and he should be safe inside and outside, how can he be filthy and trapped in the pen and inkstone for a long time." At that time, most of Li Hongzhang's shogunate were from people or jinshi, and Yuan Shikai was only an unknown talent, so he did not directly defect to Li Hongzhang, but in May 1881, he led dozens of people from his old family to Dengzhou, Shandong, and defected to Wu Changqing, the commander of the Huai army.
In 1882, there was a military rebellion in Korea, and the father of the Korean king Yi Hee (Joseon Gojong), the king of Heungseon, used the army to mutiniate and successfully seized power; The Korean princess Min and her party had a gap with the Dayuan Jun and asked the Qing court to send troops to quell the chaos, and Yuan Shikai followed Wu Changqing's troops east to Korea. Yuan Shikai led a Qing army to cooperate with the operation, killing dozens of mutiny participants. During the battle, Yuan Shikai put his gun all the way and took the lead in rushing to the front, his perseverance and bravery infected his subordinates, and the mutiny was quickly quelled. In his report to the Qing court, Wu Changqing praised him, saying that he "managed the army seriously, made good arrangements, competed to attack and suppress first, and was particularly courageous." Later, the Qing army took Dayuan Jun to Baoding for questioning, and Yuan Shikai, who was 23 years old at the time, was stationed in the vassal state of Korea as an assistant to the Korean military affairs to assist the North Korea in training the new army and controlling taxes. During Yuan Shikai's stay in North Korea, he was unanimously praised by the North Koreans, and the North Koreans praised him: "Mingda has been dreaming of success, staying in Beijing (Seoul) for many years, and he has won the hearts of the people."
In 1884, Kim Yukyun and other members of the "Enlightenment Party" staged a coup d'Γ©tat in Jiashen in an attempt to overthrow the regime controlled by the "Great Party", and the Japanese troops stationed in Korea also took the opportunity to take the royal family hostage. King Li Xi sent people to the Qing camp to ask for help, and Yuan Shikai commanded the Qing army to repel the Japanese army and maintain the suzerainty and other privileges of the Qing court in Korea. Yuan Shikai quelled the coup d'Γ©tat in Jiashen and repelled the Japanese infiltrating forces, smashed Japan's attempt to take advantage of the Sino-French war to seek Korea, and delayed the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war. Yuan Shikai was also valued by Li Hongzhang and others because of this incident, and at the age of 26, he was named "Minister of Commerce and Trade Affairs of the Prime Minister stationed in North Korea". During Yuan Shikai's stay in Korea, he often went in and out of the Korean court, and asked Joseon Gaozong to greet the Shangguo Qincha according to the etiquette of the vassal state, and clarified the relationship between the Qing Dynasty and the Joseon dynasty. He also prevented North Korea from borrowing money from foreign countries and obstructed North Korea from sending ministers to Western countries, and Yuan Shikai's interference in North Korea's internal affairs aroused the dissatisfaction of the Joseon king and some ministers, and he was constantly impeached by people in the Qing court.
In January 1888, King Yi Xi of Joseon sent a letter requesting the Qing court to remove Yuan Shikai, and then Kim Myung Gyu, a Korean official in China, was ordered by Yi Xi to request that Li Hongzhang be replaced. Zhang Jian, Zhang Peilun and others in the Qing court also attacked Yuan Shikai for "being extravagant and arrogant, arrogant and arrogant, staying in Korea for a long time, which is useless to the overall situation." Li Hongzhang overrode public opinion, not only let Yuan Shikai continue to serve in the court, but also wrote a comment to Yuan Shikai in February 1890 that "blood loyalty, talent and wisdom, strength to hold the overall situation, and it is difficult to be alone". Li Hongzhang believes that although Yuan Shikai adopted some radical and crude measures during his 12 years in Korea because of his youthful vigor, he effectively curbed the infiltration of Japan and Tsarist Russia into Korea. The Japanese hated Yuan Shikai, and until the first year of the First Sino-Japanese War, Japan sent people to assassinate Yuan Shikai many times, but it was unsuccessful.
In 1894, when the Donghak uprising broke out in Korea, Yuan Shikai hinted that the Korean government begged for help from the Qing government. Then the Japanese army quickly dispatched to Korea in an attempt to provoke a war. On July 19, on the eve of the outbreak of the First Sino-Japanese War, Yuan Shikai disguised himself as a civilian and fled back from Incheon. Because of Yuan Shikai's outstanding performance in the Joseon Dynasty and the name of "knowing soldiers", Beiyang Minister Li Hongzhang and others recommended Yuan Shikai to supervise the training of the new army.
In 1895, Yuan Shikai began to train troops at the small station between Tianjin and Tanggu, and the ministers of the Military Affairs Department, Rong Lu and Li Hongzhang, sent Yuan Shikai to expand the training of the Dingwu Army, and renamed it the "New Army". The plan is to set 10 battalions and train 3,000 infantry troops, 1,000 artillery troops, 250 horse teams, and 500 engineering teams. And recruit 2,000 foot teams and 250 horse teams, a total of 7,000 people. During the training at the small station, Yuan Shikai hired more than 10 German officers to serve as instructors, and selected more than 100 students from the Tianjin Military Academy to serve as officers at all levels, and quoted and cultivated a number of personal cronies to strengthen his control over the whole army.
In Chinese history, the training of small stations was a turning point in the development of China's new-style army, and it also laid the foundation for Yuan Shikai's lifelong career.
Tan Zhonglin, the current governor of Liangguang, is also smart, he knows that Yuan Shikai, who is in charge of the small station of the official and the training of soldiers, is not currently considered a minister of the imperial court, but the future is limitless, and he has offended him, so he almost climbed to Wanghailou to worship Yuan Shikai.
At that moment, Tan Zhonglin stepped on the stairs and walked upstairs quickly, his fat body trembled for a while, trembling so much that he almost dropped a piece of meat, and he could go upstairs, but he was so tired that he couldn't breathe. Yuan Shikai didn't look at Liu Squint, he didn't have a good nose and vertical eyes, but when he treated the feudal officials, he still had to take care of his face, he took a few steps closer and said to Tan Zhonglin deeply: "How dare you bother Lord Tan to come to the small building to work, I will go to your mansion to visit Lord Tan." β
Tan Zhonglin took a breath before he said, "Lord Yuan came to my small temple, and he didn't say hello, which made Xiaosheng's face really unbearable." Disrespectful! Disrespectful! β
The two were polite, and Yuan Shikai got to the point: "I came this time, it really doesn't have any major events, it is a private matter, so I don't dare to take the liberty of breaking into the Governor's Palace." β
Only then did Tan Zhonglin know that the reason why Yuan Shikai did not go straight to the Governor's Mansion was that there was no actual "official" task, so he settled down, his mind turned, and he said flatteringly: "What kind of private matter, official matter, Lord Yuan came here is a business matter, what a big thing or a small matter, Lord Yuan's small matter is my big thing, what is the matter, Lord Yuan said it is okay." β
Yuan Shikai lowered his voice and said, "Master Li, I heard that you haven't heard about the Three Treasures of Xiangshan?" β
When Tan Zhonglin heard this, he was shocked, thought about it and said: "The villain is stupid, I really haven't heard of the three treasures of Xiangshan, please let Master Yuan make it clear." β
Yuan Shikai said: "What about this first treasure, I heard that there is a treasure hidden in Xiangshan County, and this treasure will be lost in Xiangshan County in the future." This treasure is enough to win a war, so there is a lot of uproar, the emperor is also looking for it, all kinds of gangs among the people are also looking for it, even some people in our government are also looking for it, recently I heard that there was a big movement in Xiangshan County, and even the county officials let the triad people kill. β
Tan Zhonglin was shocked when he heard this, and thought to himself, he had long heard that Li Hanzhang, the former governor of Liangguang, was insatiable and hid a large amount of treasure. But then again, thousands of miles to be an official, in order to eat and wear, three years of Qing Governor's Mansion, 100,000 snowflakes of silver, not to mention the fat shortage of the Governor of Liangguang. Is this Yuan Shikai asking me for a bribe? Or is it a deliberate temptation to hide your head and show your tail, and you really can't figure it out for a while.
Tan Zhonglin's head suddenly had a layer of sweat beads, and he hurriedly took out a champa to wipe the stinky sweat frequently. However, when the official came to this point, he still had experience and wit, Tan Zhonglin said: "If there is really such a big matter, the lower officials will strictly investigate and visit, never hide it, and resolutely report it to the imperial court...... At the same time...... If there is a disturbance in this treasure, the lower officials will definitely report it to Lord Yuan. However, the county magistrate of Xiangshan County was killed, there is indeed such a thing, it is a triad rebellion, the minister has already sent a large army to bomb and suppress, and he has won a complete victory, the thieves have long been defeated, and the whole army has been restored, even if there are a few people left, I don't know where to flee. At the moment, I am closely tracking down to see if there are any remaining parties. β
Yuan Shikai looked at the sweat on Tan Zhonglin's head and thought, although I just said this matter lightly, but why do you Tan Zhonglin be so shocked by horses and mules? If such a large amount of treasure can be collected, who can have such great ability except for the Governor who has such great power! I don't knock who do you knock? As for the killing of the triads, you can pick the big bragging, and brag about not filing taxes anyway.
Yuan Shikai said: "The second treasure of this Xiangshan is that there is a military book, called "Heavenly Taoluo", I heard that it is the posthumous work of Long-haired Shi Dakai, who gets this military book, who can win all the wars." You also know that I have been martial all my life, I love military books, and I regard military books as life, and I want to ask Lord Tan to find the whereabouts of this military book. β
When Tan Zhonglin heard this, he thought: What kind of tattered military book, I don't lead the troops to fight, what does it have to do with me, but he said: "Oh - the lower official is lonely and unheard, and he really hasn't heard of it, but from now on, the lower official will send his subordinates to inquire about this matter, and once there is a clue, he must immediately track it down and dedicate it to Lord Yuan." β
Yuan Shikai thought, Tan Zhonglin is also perfunctory, if he really got the military book, how can he give it to me casually if he doesn't steal it. Despite this, Yuan Shikai felt that he should give him a set first: "The treasure of the world, how can I get it alone, Lord Tan really wants to get this military book, even if it is given to me, I will also dedicate it to the Ministry of War, and then the Ministry of War will present it to the emperor." Then Lord Tan has made a great contribution to the imperial court, and he doesn't have to worry about no chance of promotion. β
Both of them couldn't help but laugh.
After laughing enough, Yuan Shikai said again: "The third treasure of Xiangshan is a character named Sun Wen." β
Tan Zhonglin hurriedly said: "I know about this. β
Yuan Shikai thought to himself, this Tan Zhonglin is not too stupid, and he also knows that there is a person named Sun Wen in Xiangshan County, so he smiled and said, "I wish to hear it." β
Tan Zhonglin said: "On November 12, 1866 (the sixth day of the tenth month of the fifth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty), Sun Wen was born in a peasant family in Cuiheng Village, Xiangshan County, Guangdong Province, and was the third son in the family.
In 1871, when Sun Wen was 6 years old, he went to the mountains to collect firewood and herd cattle, went to the stream to fish and shrimp, followed his grandfather to the beach to hunt oysters, and went to the martial arts hall run by the triad people in the neighboring village to learn boxing. At the age of 7 (1872), he entered a private school to receive traditional education, because of the poverty of his family, Sun Wen usually had to pick up pig manure, so the poor early life made Sun Wen have a personal experience of the suffering of farmers. At the age of 10, he began to study in the village school, and became the most literate member of the family in only three years.
In 1879, 14-year-old Sun Wen was assisted by his eldest brother Sun Mei and went to Honolulu, Hawaii with his mother to study. He studied English, British History, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Bible and other subjects at the Church of England's English-taught primary school, Iolani College, where he studied English.
In 1881, Sun Wen graduated and was awarded the English Grammar Award by the Prince of Hawaii. He then continued his education at Oahu College, the highest institution in the region, the American Church School (equivalent to secondary school). After returning to China, he accompanied Lu Haodong to the village temple, and saw that the sick begged the gods to take the incense ashes, and the two were dissatisfied with the witch doctor's deception, so they broke the idol separately, so they left Hong Kong. After arriving in Hong Kong, he was baptized into Christianity and continued his studies, and soon transferred to Boji Medical College in Guangzhou, where he became acquainted with Zheng Shiliang, the leader of the triads. Later, when he heard about the enrollment of the Hong Kong College of Western Medicine, he was admitted to the school with excellent results. During his studies, in addition to studying for undergraduates, he also dabbled in the knowledge of politics, economy, agriculture, and even astronomy and geography in Europe and the United States. At that time, he often discussed state affairs with fellow townsmen Yang Heling, Chen Shaobai, You Lie and others, and criticized the government. During this period, he sent a letter to Zheng Zaoru, a retired official in Shuhaotou Township, proposing to ban opium, grow sericulture, and run education. Every time he returned to his hometown during the holidays, he helped the peasants to select seeds and apply fertilizer, improve water conservancy, widen roads, and discussed with the gentry to reform the township administration and formulate measures to prevent thieves.
After graduating from medical school, he set up museums in Macao and Guangzhou to practice medicine, and regularly provided free clinics and medicines every day. In the spring of 1894, he drafted the "Book of Li Hongzhang" at Cuiheng's home, and went to Tianjin with Lu Haodong to ask to see Li Hongzhang, hoping that he would accept his strategy of "making the best use of talents, making the best use of the land, making the best use of materials, and flowing smoothly", but he was not received, so he went to Honolulu, and with the help of Sun Mei, after several hardships, mobilized the vast number of overseas Chinese, and formed China's first bourgeois group, the Xingzhong Society. The oath of the association clearly put forward the idea of 'expelling the Tartars, restoring China, and establishing a united government,' and immediately raised funds for an opportune revolt......"
After listening to Tan Zhonglin's introduction to Sun Wen, Yuan Shikai praised him and said: "You are busy with official business, and you have a lot of opportunities, but you remember an ordinary person in Xiangshan County so familiarly!" It's rareβit's rareβ"
Tan Zhonglin turned his face: "He is not an ordinary person, he is a key criminal arrested by the imperial court, how dare I be a little neglectful." Today......" Tan Zhonglin leaned close to Yuan Shikai's ear and said, "this Sun Wen is going to make a big disturbance again." β
When Yuan Shikai heard this, he felt that this matter was not trivial, and asked, "I don't know what big disturbances have occurred?" β
Tan Zhonglin said: "Today, Sun Wen is going to gather the rebel party. β
Yuan Shikai was taken aback: "Why didn't I know about this, and the imperial court didn't get any secret reports." I wonder what the Governor will do about this? β
Tan Zhonglin laughed and said, "This is Guan Gong eating bean sprouts - a piece of cake." We have set up additional garrisons, and have held the four gates of the city tightly, separating the outer city from the inner part of the city; Then at the various passes in the city, he sent heavy troops to guard them, and separated the thieves piece by piece; Then he sent troops to patrol and search, and went out to find thieves one by one, even if Sun Wen had great ability, it was difficult for him to show it. Tell me, what kind of tactics do I have to call this? β
Yuan Shikai smiled and said, "I'm listening, please tell me about itβ"
Tan Zhonglin said confidently: "This is called beating a dog behind closed doors, and catching turtles in an urn, and then eating meat bite by bite." β
Yuan Shikai also laughed when he heard it and said: "In other words, even if Sun Wen is Sun Wukong alive, it will be difficult to escape the palm of the Buddha." β
The two of them laughed again.
Yuan Shikai said again: "There were several groups of people in the restaurant just now, the first group is people from the rivers and lakes, the second group is the retinue and reformers who run errands for the emperor, and the third group is Zhang Binglin and two little minions of the revolutionary party. Tell me, where would it be better for these charlatans and revolutionaries to hide now? β
Tan Zhonglin pondered for a while and said: "It's not good, now the population of Guangzhou is nearly one million, and the floating population alone is nearly 500,000. Yuan Shikai induced him again: "If you are a revolutionary party, where do you hide? β
Tan Zhonglin pondered for a while and said, "Am I a revolutionary...... I hid in the Tan boat on the Pearl River, where there were things to play and eat, and there were seven or eight thousand on the boat alone, and we had to search for a few days even if we sent troops to search for it. β
Yuan Shikai pointed at Tan Zhonglin and said with a smile, "Merry, merry, who doesn't know what kind of goods are on that tank." It's just a pity that it's out of Guangzhou City. β
Tan Zhonglin laughed again when he heard this.
