Chapter 235: The Problem with Radar

Last year, the Air Force received news that the Americans were willing to export their F-16 fighters to their own side, and the Air Force was very excited at that time, but later, Qin Feng attended the meeting by chance and pointed out several key aspects, such as the castration of its engine.

If the Air Force can introduce the original American F-16, it should be quite appropriate, after all, this fighter uses an advanced third-generation turbofan engine with a thrust-to-weight ratio of up to 8, and uses the energy maneuver theory of the fighter mafia, which is quite advanced, but unfortunately, the J79 engine, which was castrated into an F-4 ghost, suddenly reduced the performance.

Although the high-altitude and high-speed performance of the F-16 is not good, but it has the J-8, the J-8 can intercept at high altitude and high speed, and other combat missions can be handed over to the F-16.

It's a pity, think about it now, although the engine was castrated, the F-16's avionics system has not shrunk, even if it can't guide the medium-range Sparrow missile, but it uses a flat slot radar antenna! With a very high pulse Doppler ability, he can find out the target in the complex clutter on the ground, which is also what he urgently needs now.

Speaking of aviation technology, with the World War II a large number of European scientists went to the United States, plus European gold also flowed to the United States, the United States became the biggest beneficiary of World War II, with a large number of scientists, and since then began the post-war hegemony.

The level of electronic technology in Europe as a whole is much worse than that of the United States.

For example, their Tornado fighter-bomber, which several European countries have worked on together, still can't solve the avionics problem, so they were forced to adopt two models, one is the avionics system of the bomber, which specializes in ground bombing, and the other is the avionics system of the interceptor, which is used for air interception, and the two systems cannot be integrated.

But what about the United States?

The Americans have completed the research and development of flat slot radar antennas as early as the later stage of the F-4 Phantom fighter, effectively integrating the anti-air and anti-ground modes together, on the F-14 Tomcat fighter, because of the increase in caliber, the result is to achieve a terrible maximum detection range of 315 kilometers, to achieve simultaneous guidance of six immortal bird missiles, and on the F-15 and F-16, the focus is on improving data processing capabilities, giving the fighter more modes.

Speaking of fighter radar, another thing that makes people talk about it is the MiG-25 radar, which is said to be powerful enough to roast a rabbit to death.

But what's the use of that? Or because of the backward technology of the Soviet Union, it is by increasing the power of the radar to achieve long-distance detection, but the conversion efficiency is low, most of the energy is turned into heat energy and dissipated, but the real useful work is not much, if they want to develop, as long as the backward radar antenna is replaced, it can bring a huge leap.

The airborne radar antenna of the first fighter jet is a small pot lid, which is similar to the satellite TV antenna, the scientific name is Cassegrain antenna, this reflective antenna, which has been used for a long time, and the volume is getting larger and larger, which brings a drawback, and it is difficult to rotate, so it is improved and the pot lid is buckled upside down, so that the pot lid does not need to be moved, as long as the feed is moved, this is the inverted Cassegrain antenna, referred to as the inverted card.

The flat slit radar antenna is a pure plane, in this plane open a thin strip of openings, electromagnetic waves are radiated from these openings, this new generation of radar antenna, its own radar reflection cross-sectional area and side lobe strength are much smaller than the parabolic reflection antenna, the same transmitter and receiver, the performance is greatly improved.

If the F-16 is introduced, this radar technology will be introduced at the same time, which is a huge progress for the country, after all, the domestic development of the third generation aircraft, it is necessary to adopt this radar.

However, this kind of technology is now only available to the Americans, and the Soviets planned to do it, but as a result, they could not do it after more than ten years, so they simply bypassed it and went directly to the phased array radar.

It requires a high level of precision, which the Soviets did not have.

In Western Europe, it was not until the nineties that the mass production of flat-panel slot array fighter radars was realized, and at this time, the attention of the US military had long since turned to active electrically scanning array radars.

The current Phantom 2000 still uses this inverted Cassegrain antenna, which has improved performance compared with traditional parabolic antennas, and the technical difficulty and cost are significantly lower than those of flat slot array antennas, which can be said to be a technical weakness.

It would be good if the radar equipment from the United States could be introduced and installed on Mr. Gu's J-8 modified fighters, which would not only reduce the cost of procurement, but also achieve rapid combat effectiveness?

This thought suddenly popped into Qin Feng's mind. After all, in the domestic fighters, only the J-8 modification and the large nose of the MiG-23 can be equipped with a large radar.

It was introduced in this way, so that it was good to reserve technology for Song Lao's new annihilation.

Of course, the thought was only fleeting.

The night wind blew, and the two stood quietly here, looking at the sky, until the other party's fighter plane returned from the night flight experiment, and then went back to sleep.

The next day, when I came to the fighter again, I saw that the nose of the two-seater Mirage 2000 fighter had been opened.

The nose of the aircraft is pointed, and at the same time, it is also made of special materials, which can allow electromagnetic waves to pass through, because, just behind the nose, is the airborne radar.

"The subject of today's test flight is radar, so let's take a look at it first, this is our latest RDM radar." Colonel Middo looked at the members of the delegation and began to explain.

RDM radar, the full name is Radar Doppler Multifunction, multi-function Doppler radar, although the name is called, in fact, it is actually just a Celano, it does not have the ability of pulse Doppler, can not filter out the target from complex ground clutter, its prototype Celano is a single pulse radar.

Single-pulse radars do not have the ability to look down because they cannot distinguish targets from ground echoes. In order to guide the Matra 530 missile, Celaeno IV added a continuous wave irradiator, which uses the Doppler principle to detect moving targets, giving this radar a "limited downward view function".

In the introduction of this radar, Doppler was not mentioned, but only the ability to capture moving targets, which was also the conversation between Qin Feng and General Lin last night.

Qin Feng is not at ease with this radar, but now, when the radome in the nose is opened, everyone can see the fiery red inverted card antenna, as well as the processing system behind it, which still looks very high-end, after all, there has never been one in China.
