Chapter 12: The Roman War on the Western Front

Just as the fighting on the Eastern Front was intensifying, war also broke out on the Western Front.

A Roman Brutus army invaded the borders of Lower Macedonia, which posed a direct threat to the capital, Thessaloniki. The military attack of the Romans was very aggressive.

Once again, King Antigone decided to lead the Macedonians into war with the Romans.

He personally commanded the Fourth Army and appointed Aloyos as cavalry commander. From the Paionian barracks, they took the initiative to intercept enemy troops in the direction of Epirus.

The Macedonian First Army (also known as the Greek First Army) from the Greek peninsula, led by Damasos, would march westward and be stationed on the coast of Aetoria. Prepare for Roman reinforcements landing from the flanks and be ready to assist the king's fourth legion in battle.

Tiberius Brutus was the leader of the Roman Brutus family, who personally crossed the sea to the Greek Peninsula with an expeditionary legion, and also made desperate bets to fight for land and wealth. As soon as the Roman army came ashore, they captured the city of Apollonia and intended to use it as a base for expansion.

Apollonia was originally a neutral region and was formerly a colony of the Greeks. Later, in an treaty between Macedonia and Greece, in order to achieve reconciliation between the two sides, the city was deliberately set as a neutral city as a buffer zone between the two sides.

No matter how it is divided, it has always belonged to the confines of the Greek world, facing the frontier of the Adriatic Sea.

Now that the Brutus family has taken possession of the city, it is a serious violation of the rights of the Greek world state.

Tiberius knew that he was not just attacking for the sake of this small town.

Once he had gained a foothold in Apollonia and had the strong support of the other Roman allies, he carried out the next step of his invasion.

He sent his general, Cornelius Brutus, into Lower Macedonia to launch an attack to test Macedonia's presence on the Western Front.

The Fourth Legion was a new legion formed by Oonos at the behest of the king, and Oonos personally deployed and trained this army, so this legion was very strong in combat.

At first, the Fourth Army was formed in preparation for the invasion of the Dacians. But now, Dacia and Macedonia have chosen to be friendly to each other under the pressure of their own circumstances. Thus, the 4th Army Corps could be moved in other directions.

Now Antigone is officially the supreme commander of the regiment, and he leads the Fourth Army Corps as the main force against Rome.

At the junction of Thessaly with the region of Lower Macedonia, the Macedonian army ran head-on with the army of Cornelius Brutus.

This was not expected by the Romans. They thought that the main Macedonian forces were fighting in the East and the Mediterranean, but such a large army appeared in front of them.

The Roman advance force had only half a force, and the Macedonian main force had a full force. Of course, the Romans were not ready to flee with their tails between their legs, they wanted to test the combat capabilities of their soldiers, the strength of the Macedonian army.

The Roman army was dominated by infantry, and melee combat was their early mainstay, the Roman Youth Army. These are young soldiers, and they have good physical strength.

They relied on good morale and well-trained training to maintain the front when they fought. The soldiers of the Al-Shabaab were mainly armed with a short sword, a bronze helmet, a large shield and a light cuirass. Each fighter is armed with two heavy javelins and throws at the enemy at medium and close range before engaging in hand-to-hand combat.

This javelin has a unique design with a soft barb on the back of the head, so it bends when it hits the target, and the enemy cannot throw it back again.

Behind them stood Roman javelinmen, who belonged to the light infantry. Mainly as a second-line support soldier.

Most of these troops come from Orion, who have no money to buy good equipment at home, so they have less protection, only a small round shield on their arms. However, Orion's professional tradition gives them the advantage of mobility, especially being adept at running.

At the end of the Roman front were two squadrons of Roman light cavalry, and a general cavalry guard.

The Roman phalanx was more suitable for melee combat, and was a more flexible combat unit, and equipping them with javelins also made up for the disadvantage of the length of the dagger to some extent.

Although Rome had a good mix of troops, the Macedonian side did not show weakness. This time at the front of the line were the light infantry, these javelinmen came from the northern mountain people, most of them were hunting, and the accuracy of archery bidding was high.

This was followed by the Macedonian phalanx, the main arm of the Macedonian infantry. Whether it is to maintain the battle line or to carry out the assault with a gun array, the Macedonian pikes phalanx can do the job well.

There were several pikemen in the infantry. These soldiers were also armed with extra-long spears and formed a phalanx of equal numbers. It's just that in terms of training and morale, it's worse than the Macedonian phalanx. There is no problem with conscription guns as hard-to-stun troops, and besides, the conscription guns are a good complement.

The cavalry consisted of: two general guards, a squadron of Macedonian heavy cavalry, and several squadrons of Macedonian light cavalry.

The Fourth Legion was a legion with strong cavalry strength. This configuration concept is also derived from Oonos' concept of attaching importance to cavalry breakthroughs.

The battlefield was a plain, and the Romans were in a more advantageous position. The Roman soldiers were in close formation, ready for battle.

The Roman general Cornelius Brutus was in the middle of the battle and gave an inspiring speech:

"You all know! I am a true traditional Roman. I believe in discipline, dignity and duty. I firmly believe that the destiny of Rome is to rule the world!

I also believe in our own destiny, and that is here, a new beginning!

Today will be remembered for a long time, and a hundred years from now will still speak of today: the war between great peoples.

This is the content of the ancient epics, and today we have to create our own myths. We will be heroes!

The sun has risen. How many of us who watch the dawn will live to see the night coming?

I am not afraid of the dead, much less of the living. I don't expect you to be like me, but remember, on the battlefield: cowards will die in agony, while warriors will die in peace. Do your job, and when death comes to you, you won't even notice him.

Brethren! Fight alongside me! There are a lot of enemies, right? The crazy women who had fled their greed with rice buckets had come here. And no wonder, because they're not real men! Their guts are smaller than the fleas on a cockroach!

Do you have enough manhood to win this battle? Can you rise to the challenge? If you can, then plunder and prey are waiting for you ahead! This is the last obstacle in our way to the city gates! Win here and you'll be able to claim your prize!

Valiant soldiers! Under my leadership, victory will be ours.

But it also meant that I couldn't risk being on the front line. Under your protection, I can command safely and attentively to achieve victory.

O my loyal warriors! This is by no means cowardice, this is prudence! It is the guarantee of victory! ”

The Roman soldiers began to bang their weapons and cheered.

Antigone thought it was interesting to watch, and it was a pleasure to fight such a respectable enemy. But he will not show mercy.

After all, there is a huge disparity in the strength of the two sides participating in the war, and the Macedonian general is no longer verbose:

"On this battlefield, a quarter of our army stands. Therefore, we are more than enough to win great honors and accomplish brilliant deeds!

I'm confident about it!

Today, victory is in the palm of our hands! Fight with all your heart and soul, and we will win! ”

After a brief communication with the soldiers, Antigone asked the troops, the entire combatant, to take part in the attack directly.

As soon as the horn of attack was blown, the phalanx marched forward in unison. The light infantry was already running ahead, and the task of these lightly armed units was to throw javelins into the Roman phalanx for a first strike, while absorbing the damage of the heavy javelins of the Roman light infantry.

The front line engaged, and the javelins of both sides flew down into the opposing team's ranks like showers, and the light infantry fought.

The Roman youth soldiers were very disciplined, and the javelinmen fought each other, but they did not issue a javelin, but only protected them with long shields, and their shields and armor were good.

It was followed by the Macedonian phalanx. The youth army suddenly drew their javelins and fought back vigorously, making a long-handed attack.

The heavy javelins of the Roman youth army really impressed. As soon as the Macedonian phalanx approached them, the Roman warriors immediately took out their javelins and threw them in unison. Two rounds of throwing knocked many of the front-row phalanx soldiers to the ground.

However, when the Roman youth army ran out of three javelins each, only the short sword remained. The phalanx withstood the casualties, and the time for a counterattack came. The Macedonian infantry took advantage of the super-long spear and easily defeated Cornelius' forces.

The Roman shield served a decent defensive effect, but the short sword in the hands of the young soldier was much more anxious. The soldiers of the Macedonian phalanx stabbed the Roman infantry with their spears, and the youth army gradually became overwhelmed. The phalanx of pikes was pressed in full force, and the Roman front began to disintegrate.

At the same time, Aloyos led the superior cavalry around the infantry line and fiercely pounced on the Roman cavalry units. Cornelius retreated with the remnants of his cavalry.

Aloyos led his cavalry into the flank of the Roman youth line, a blow that completely broke the Roman infantry's defenses.

The Romans turned around and fled, but without the cover of the cavalry, they could not escape.

This war was won by Macedonia. Only a few of the Romans fled back to Apollonia.

Antigone arrived outside Apollonia with the Fourth Legion, and he decided to set up camp first to observe the enemy.

The greatest advantage of the Macedonians is that they have access to a strong supply line by land. The Roman army received only limited replenishment from the city of Apollonia, and most of it had to be transported by navy. The weather, hostile navies, and shipping routes all affect the stability of supplies.

At this time, the First Army of Damasos moved closer to them, which was conducive to cooperation. The Macedonian Navy, led by Admiral Phillips, began a non-stop cruise along the southwestern coast of the Greek peninsula. Be ready to fight Roman ships or intercept them.

The Macedonian transport fleet, under the escort of the navy, supplied reinforcements, weapons, and some food and grass to friendly positions on the front line. There were infantry from Sparta, light cavalry from Corinth, supplies from Greece, weapons and equipment from Thessaloniki, and so on.
