Chapter 112: Fishing Floods
Today's Jinshan Port has begun to take shape after a year and a half of development. Of course, this initial appearance is also compared with the original, and naturally cannot be compared with those towns in China. The small brick kilns in the city had just been erected, and they had not yet had time to burn the bricks in a hurry—in fact, the main reason was the lack of enough people to make the bricks. As a result, almost all of the buildings in the city are made of wood, and there are even some adobe buildings, all of which look very different from the local red-brick and blue-tiled buildings.
More than 200 acres of potatoes outside the city have been harvested twice, but unfortunately the soil fertility here is not good, and it is the first year of barren land, even if everyone has taken a lot of measures, such as covering the silt at the bottom of the river in the field, such as sprinkling a layer of grass ash in the field, but the yield is still not high after all. Therefore, the total amount of grain stored in the city is less than 200 tons, and this amount is still added to the 100 tons of wheat left over from the last passing, or even less.
Now it is impossible to farm in winter, and even if you plant potatoes with a short growing period after the beginning of spring, you will not be able to harvest a crop until mid to late December at the earliest, and the maintenance of these 200 tons of grain is really a bit tight by that time. It seems that we still have to go to Gushan Port to coordinate a batch of grain to come over, the area of the reclaimed fields there is larger, and a batch of grain has also been transported from the mainland, and the situation is much more surplus than here, so it is not a problem to support a little bit.
"The six flute-shaped ships built in the country should have been put into service at the calculated time, and it is said that two will join the voyage between Xinhua Port and Gushan Port. In that case, there would be four transport ships involved in the migration movement here, which can transport nearly 2,000 people at a time. An Shu stood on the dock and chatted with Li Yi.
"It's beautiful, but the local transportation tasks are also quite busy. I'm pretty sure that only one ship will be transferred here to participate in the migrant transport. Li Yi patted the back of An's head. said, "Okay." In the future, you will take the 'Breaking Wave' to go around between these two points, and transport people and goods back and forth, and I will return to Blackwater Port. ”
"I see." It doesn't matter where he is, "Isn't it just for me to play alone here, it's okay." ”
……
July 31, 1643, Port of Blackwater. Just when Li Yi's "Chopper" was repaired and maintained and embarked on the dangerous journey back, the Blackwater Port on Sakhalin Island, which was in the best season of the year, was also ushering in a grand event.
In the wide river of black water. A row of wooden fence walls made of aspen wood was erected in the deep water in the middle of the river, with an opening in the middle of the fence wall, and two other fence walls that were gradually tightened back in the shape of a funnel on either side. Finally, a layer of fishing nets hung over the openings of the two gradually tightening fence walls. With the arrival of the annual salmon migration and fishing season, how can people on the east coast let go of this opportunity to increase their food reserves, which is almost no different from lying at home and picking up fish to eat?
Last year's fishing flood was missed because everyone was not prepared, so they could only watch those fat salmon slip away. But this year was different, and since the first batch of migratory fish was spotted in early July, Sergeant Johnson has been quickly reporting to Mo Ming in Yantai and erecting a fence in the river. Mo Ming also attaches great importance to this matter. Since the port of Blackwater and its vicinity were not suitable for large-scale land reclamation, he set his mind on the abundant fishery resources in the area.
Before leaving, the local people had given him a piece of information. It contains some information about salmon fisheries. Unfortunately, there were only a few strokes, which were very incomplete, and after arriving at Blackwater Harbor, he managed to communicate with the local natives, and finally got some information about the most famous fish in this place.
Salmon, also known as salmon, is a valuable cold-water migratory fish distributed in the Pacific Ocean between 35 and 70 degrees north latitude and 110 to 140 degrees east longitude. Among them, the Sea of Okhotsk, the coast of Sakhalin Island and the waters of the Kuril Islands are its key production areas. The fish is delicious and nutritious, and every summer and autumn, schools of salmon that grow in the Sea of Okhotsk begin to migrate en masse to the freshwater rivers on the shore to spawn and form a fishing flood.
This kind of fish is huge, generally weighing seven or eight catties, and the big twenty or thirty catties are not a problem. They are born in rivers, grow up to live in the sea, and return to their birthplace to lay eggs after 3-5 years of sexual maturity. The whole process is spectacular, with migratory salmon swimming against the current to return to their birthplace to reproduce. The whole road is extremely dangerous, with countless shoals and waterfalls. Whenever this situation is encountered, salmon always fight with all their strength and sneak with difficulty. In many shallow places, they move sideways, even rubbing against the sand at the bottom of the water; Whenever they encounter a waterfall or a broken stream, they will even jump up and jump over this difficult place. Along the way, predators such as foxes, brown bears, and eagle owls stay in the shallow waters, treating the migratory salmon as their annual feast.
Many salmon die halfway through due to physical exhaustion, human fishing, animal predation, etc., and only about 20% of salmon end up spawning all over their bodies. When they lay their eggs, the big fish die of nutrients (at which point they also lose their edible value), and the carcass they leave behind will become a food source for the young fish to feed and return to the sea safely.
The whole process of salmon migration is extremely difficult and spectacular, and their instinct to return to their roots and reproduce is even more moving. However, people are moved, but the fish that should be caught still have to be caught, and they have to live themselves.
There are generally two migratory routes for salmon, one is from the Sea of Okhotsk into the Heilongjiang River and the Ussuri River; One runs along the coast of Sakhalin into the Sea of Japan, and then swims back to the Tumen River, the Hunchun River, and some of the rivers leading to the sea in Korea. Of course, there are also a considerable number of salmon (mainly humpback salmon) that enter some inland freshwater rivers and lakes on Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands to spawn. At this time of year, the famous salmon fishery is formed.
According to some historical records, it has been described as a large school of migratory salmon in the river so dense that it can almost be "stepped on", of course, this is an exaggerated lyrical technique. However, the density of fish in the Heilongjiang River was once so high that it was possible to "cut off the oars" during the flood season, which shows the large number of migratory salmon.
There are more than 6,000 rivers on Sakhalin, a considerable number of which have migratory salmon spawning. The more well-known production areas in the nearby region are the Polonay River, as well as some freshwater rivers in the South Kuril Islands, which are the main production areas for humpback salmon. During the Soviet era, the Russians caught more than 10,000 tons of humpbacked salmon in the rivers of Sakhalin every year; And in the freshwater river on the island, even in the year with low production, more than 8,000 tons can be caught, which is a staggering high yield!
Although the Blackwater River is only a medium-sized river on Sakhalin Island, thousands of humpback salmon still come in during the fishing season every year. These fish begin to appear in June, and in late July and early August, the population begins to increase explosively, and continues to decline until the end of the month, and in early September, you can see the last wave of migratory fish, and the whole fishing period lasts for more than a month.
The nets of the people on the east bank had been set up more than a week earlier, and they were not greedy, but hung a net in the middle of the river where the fish were most congested. In the beginning, they harvested fishing nets every two or three days, and there were about 100 of them in each net, all of which were fat adult fish, with an average weight of about 10 catties. In the last two days, they have collected their nets almost every day, and the number of nets has increased dramatically, to six or seven hundred. Sergeant Johnson estimates that at the current trend, the number of fish caught per net will likely increase in the future, and the frequency of net replacement will gradually increase.
Hundreds of North Korean women and children lined up on the shore, killed fish on the spot under the guidance of several technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, and then salted them with the fine salt of white flowers. In fact, a considerable part of the fish will be made into smoked fish. This salted or smoked salmon can be stored for a long time, and the climate here is relatively cold, so it can be stored as a reserve food for the inhabitants of the city for a long time.
It's a pity that I forgot to dig a large cellar in the city last year, and then I can chisel ice cubes and store them in the cellar in the winter. As long as you do a good job of thermal insulation, this is a pretty good cold storage. As long as there is this cold storage, the large amount of salmon caught will not have to be marinated as it is now, but can be directly put into the warehouse for refrigerated storage.
It's a pity! Sergeant Johnson shook his head. This year, I want to dig up this cold storage, and then take advantage of the cold weather in winter to dig up ice in the Heishui River and stuff it into the cold storage. The island's natives raise a large number of reindeer and cattle, and a huge number of people die every winter due to aging and lack of forage. At this time, the people of the East Coast could buy these animals from them at a very low price, and then slaughter them themselves, and the slaughtered meat could be stored in cold storage, and the skins could be transported back to the country for sale after simple processing. Moose can even be purchased from these indigenous hunters, and the wild moose herd on the island is huge, the meat can be eaten, and the skins can be transported back to the mainland, which is very cost-effective.
While everyone was happily catching salmon on the shore, five boats (including the small North Korean fishing boat) currently moored in the harbor also took action. In addition to the two transport ships to transport supplies to Rishiri Island and Yantai Fortress, the North Korean fishing boat will be piloted by sailors to trade with the Shandan people and recruit soldiers near Omarari, while the remaining expedition ships "Fubo" and "Takai" will be temporarily converted into fishing boats. (To be continued......)
