Chapter 3: The Crucible Academy (Part I)
After some hospitality, Brandon and his companion Loren were arranged at the top of the hills of the entire Crucible - Brandon was arranged in the church of Crucible, while the rest of the retinue were in the Crucible Alchemy Academy.
Naturally, as a member of His Highness's retinue, Loren was also placed in a guest room in the Crucible Academy.
As for a certain "upright" Dean, whether he was pretending to be or being so, he proved by his actions that he was a "very real" Sakran.
If you ask why, the mountains of books and archives in front of you are the "evidence".
Casually opening a file with a mud seal, Loren sighed softly and looked sideways at the scenery outside the window.
At night, the Crucible Town is still floating in the sky with lead-gray dust, and the wreckage left by the explosion during the day is only a piece of rubble, if it weren't for the loss of a house, I'm afraid Loren would have doubted his memory, whether he really saw an entire shop blown up into the sky!
But even when an accident like that had happened, and even two blacksmiths and an apprentice wizard were killed on the spot, the people of the town were not surprised in the slightest, and they went about their work as if nothing had happened, numb to the point of accustomation.
It's just creepy!
"Are you so numb that you get used to it...... It's really creepy to say that with the size of such a small town, it can provide the armament of several legions!"
Looking through the dense files in his hand, full of heavy ordnance as large as trebuchets and carriages, as small as a wooden hammer and sword handles, the black-haired wizard's expression gradually became solemn.
Thousands of skilled craftsmen and highly skilled alchemists are all placed in such a crowded town, forming a strict production line, coupled with the combination of production and research, as long as there is sufficient fuel and raw materials, there will be a continuous supply of uniform standard ordnance weapons.
Whether His Majesty Brandon I had a flash of inspiration, or was just trying to get the most out of those alchemists, perhaps he would never know what a great and terrible thing he had done!
Bringing alchemists and craftsmen together to make weapons and providing them to the nearby Broken Mountain Fortress in the north as logistical support, it saves a lot of money and unnecessary waste, and by the way, it also gives alchemists a testing ground.
Whether the new crossbow and trebuchet are good or not, and whether the sword with improved forging skills is sharp, throw it on the battlefield of the Northern Fortress to find out.
After all, is there a more perfect "testing ground" in the world than the battlefield?
It won't be long before these numb workers and "sane" alchemists will find that it is more efficient to have a skilled craftsman finish a weapon than to separate up and have more apprentices make more parts, and then replace the repetitive simple steps with machines......
"If this continues, it will only be a matter of time before assembly lines and sweatshops are born. β
Loren, who was muttering in a low voice, couldn't help but remember what Corona had said before, and his trembling lips trembled like a poem and said to himself:
"They are the past, and we are the future, and of course, the past gives way to the future......"
"What are you talking about?"
An indifferent emphasis suddenly came from behind him, but no door opening or footsteps were heard. The black-haired wizard with an unchanged face slowly turned his head and pursed the corners of his lips a little helplessly:
"Am I supposed to praise you for being the Night's Watchman, Edward?"
The indifferent night watchman froze in place, and sighed expressionlessly: "I'm sorry, it's an old habit that can't be brokenβwhen I walk into the house, I can't help tiptoeing." β
Is it a thug in Gutter Alley, or a habit left over from becoming a night watchman?
The black-haired wizard, who couldn't help but guess in his heart, shook his head, and looked at the file casually, staring at Edward sitting in front of him with his spare eyes.
The night watchman who had gone with Brandon to the Northern Boundary Mountain would certainly not have come with him under the boring excuse of being "Loren's friend", and he must have had his purpose.
And judging from Rute Infinit's acceptance of Brandon's "almost unreasonable" demand, the final possible answer is......
"I know you're acting with His Highness Brandon during the day, Loren, you can't hide it from me. β
Here it comes...... Pretending to be surprised, Loren raised his head slightly and raised his eyebrows: "Oh?"
"Don't play stupid, I'm serious about talking to you about this. The indifferent Edward frowned slightly: "You and His Highness Brandon should both know that the reason why I appeared in the team was to monitor His Highness's every move for the night watchman. β
"Actually, I think even Rut Infinit may have been deceived by you, originally thought that His Highness was just trying to stall for time, but in fact, the target is Crucible Town!"
"Really?" Loren continued to play dumb, his eyes widened and he grinned, "How did you find out?!"
"Your performance was so clumsy. The Night's Watch lowered his voice, "It's a good excuse to leave the Dean with no room to refute - but even if he were that stupid, he should have realized that he had been deceived in hindsight." β
Edward shook his head and looked at the black-haired wizard indifferently: "I went to the Crucible to investigate the files here, what you want to confirm is His Royal Highness Crown Prince Connod's request for help, is it a trap, right?"
"So ......"
Throwing away the file in his hand, Loren deliberately leaned forward and stared at his own reflection in those pupils: "Is it a trap or not?"
"I don't know. Edward replied unhurriedly.
"Really?"
"Really, and I can guarantee that Rut Infinit won't tell me such important information to a small character who is only responsible for surveillance. β
Edward replied crisply: "What's more, I won't touch things outside of work, and being involved in the conspiracy of those big people will only make me die faster." β
It's quite like myself, and I hate accidents and all kinds of emergencies.
"If I'm really going to investigate the truth about Crucible, will you tell Rutt Infinit about this?" The black-haired wizard shook the file in his hand: "Regardless of whether it's true or not, if His Highness Conod knows that his brother actually did this, he must be very 'sad', right?"
"As I said, I won't touch anything outside of work. The indifferent Night's Watch shook his head again: "Lord Rut Infinit has given me the task of monitoring His Highness Brandon de Salion's every move, nothing more. β
An imperceptible smile flashed across Loren's mouth.
What Edward said is already obvious, what he is monitoring is "Brandon's every move", and as for any "small movements" of himself or others, he will pretend not to see and selectively ignore them.
Of course, provided that you don't make a big deal out of it.
Loren now just wants to sigh that his original decision was indeed correct, if the night watchman who monitored Brandon was replaced by Peter Fasha, he was not sure that the other party would hide from Root Infinit to cover for him.
Even if he really did this, according to the character of "watchdog" Peter, I am afraid that he will still be exposed in the end, right?
After playing the most crucial move correctly and playing the most crucial move, I was indeed the lucky one to draw a miracle......
Ahem, it's far away.
"Edward, have you ever wondered why Root Infinit had specially assigned this task to you instead of Peter Fasha, and since this task was so important, why did he not carry it out himself but entrusted it to others?"
"What was the situation that forced him to change his mind and make you, who are inconspicuous among the Ebotden night watchmen... How much do you have anything to do with me, you're in charge of spending?Peter won't hide it, he's sure he's going to report the whole thing to Rout Infinit, so there's definitely something ...... about."
"Stop!"
The indifferent night watchman stared at the black-haired wizard: "I know what you want to do, I won't accept it!"
"I'm just telling the truth. Loren replied lightly: "At the same time, remind you that my 'hypothesis' is still valid, as long as you ......"
"These archives ...... What are you going to do?"
Forced to helpless, Edward had no choice but to change the subject bluntly again: "We're only here for two days, three days at most! It's too late to just look at it, you won't have a chance to find the flaws in Crucible, even if it really exists!"
"These...... I didn't even plan to see it for myself. β
Stunned, a mysterious smile appeared on the black-haired wizard's face:
"I have a secret weapon!"
