Chapter Ninety-Three: The Great Era (I)

After a relatively quiet and stable 4325 years, the choppy 4326 is about to begin! The great time is coming.

When the first day of 4326 came, although Gan Tang knew the general direction, what he didn't know was that another period of history began from this year, and the giant wheel of history was crushing this ancient civilization country with the momentum of devastation, and human civilization was barbaricly destroyed, so that the development of the brilliant oriental dragon stagnated for hundreds of years, and there was no China after Yashan.

On another continent, too, there was turmoil, and from this year onwards, Europe was also experiencing the darkest ages of the Middle Ages.

After decades of gestation, Dante, the father of the great European Revival, has passed away, but his cautionary work "The Divine Comedy" is being sung widely on the European continent, and several enlightened monarchs and some nobles in Europe are setting off a wave of change and gradually gaining the upper hand in the battle with the Christian church.

The ecclesiastical power that has constrained the development of Europe for 700 years is collapsing, and Europe's enlightened people and scholars are constantly absorbing nutrients from Baghdad, the world's intellectual capital.

In the center of Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid dynasty in the Middle East, it was not the residence of rulers like other countries, but the Palace of Wisdom stood here as a complex of libraries, translation halls, academic research centers and other institutions, and most of the books Gan Tang read in Xiamen came from here.

Eight hundred years ago, it was only a translation and preservation of Persian documents from the Persian Empire (it was also a tradition of the Sassanid Persian Empire to translate and preserve foreign language documents in the palace library).

But soon the scope of translation expanded to Greek, Syriac, Hebrew, and even Sanskrit and Chinese literature. In order to collect rare books and collate manuscripts, Marmun sent the translator Salam to Constantinople to ask for Greek ancient books from the Eastern Roman Empire.

He also sent Hou Nain to visit Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other places to collect ancient books.

At the same time, the Arab Empire, through exchanges with the Tang Dynasty, acquired paper-making techniques, which allowed them to acquire cheap (parchment was expensive) and strong (papyrus was prone to cracking) writing materials.

The Abbasids set up a large paper mill in Baghdad to produce high-quality linen paper for the translation of scholars from the Palace of Wisdom. Arabs, Persians, Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians have translated materials from philosophy, natural sciences, humanities, literature, and linguistics.

In addition to the works of philosophers such as Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle in ancient Greece, a large number of literature, poetry, chronicles, biographies, law, agriculture, medicine, astronomy, physics, algebra, geometry, geography, cartography, astrology, alchemy, and chemistry have been translated and preserved.

At the same time as the translation, the scholars of the Wisdom Palace also carried out a lot of proofreading, annotation, correction, summarization, commentary, etc. These scholarly efforts are known as the "translation movement".

Mamun attached great importance to the work of the Palace of Wisdom, and he often participated in the academic debates held here, and often commissioned scholars from the Palace of Wisdom to work on major research projects, such as measuring the size of the Earth (Al-Bireni estimated the radius of the Earth at 6,339.6 kilometers, which is very close to the actual radius of the Earth at 6,371 kilometers).

At that time, the number of important original mathematical works in the Arab Empire far exceeded the combined number of medieval Latin and Greek mathematical works (less than 5% of Arabic mathematical works have survived to this day due to the effects of the war).

The "father of algebra" Farazmi pioneered a set of algebra systems and expressions that are still in use today. His writings on Indian numerals were also translated into Latin, which introduced the concept of "0" and "Arabic numerals" to the West, and pioneered the mathematical system commonly used today.

The Palace of Wisdom reflects the tireless spirit of intellectual exploration, the enlightened political and religious environment, and the atmosphere of free academic discussion in the Arab Empire during the "Arab Golden Age".

Baghdad became the center of knowledge for science, philosophy, medicine and education, and the Palace of Wisdom became a source of knowledge.

But at the beginning of the year 4326, the invincible iron cavalry of the steppe army began to invade the Middle East, and in history, next year the steppe army invaded Baghdad, and the Palace of Wisdom was completely destroyed.

All the books of the Baghdad library were thrown into the Tigris River in such quantities that the river water was dyed black with ink. The famous philosopher and mathematician Ibn Hassan al-Tus managed to salvage some 400,000 manuscripts before the steppe army laid siege to the city and sent them to the Malagah Observatory in the Ilkhanate for preservation a few years later.

In addition to the Palace of Wisdom in Baghdad, there are 70 libraries in Cรณrdoba, on the Iberian Peninsula, another center of Islamic scholarship, the largest of which houses 600,000 volumes. Throughout the kingdom of Al-Andalus, more than 60,000 essays, poems, or anthologies are published every year. The Cairo Library has a collection of 2 million books, while the Tripoli Library has a collection of 3 million books before it was destroyed by the Crusaders.

Gan Tang couldn't help but sigh in his heart, the comfortable days are coming to an end, and from now on it can be said to be surging! As a spoiler, isn't it worthy of yourself to stir up in it?

On the morning of the fifth day of the Lunar New Year in the second and sixth years, Gan Tang went to the foreign bank to report on the situation as usual, and slipped out at noon to have dinner with Wan Yan Zhiqing, and in the afternoon, in addition to writing some things by himself, he was also responsible for selecting books for her and accompanying her to read.

Gan Tang is very regular, except for the crossing of the street, there are no other intimate actions, but once he probably got lost while reading a book, put his hand on Wan Yan Zhiqing's shoulder, and then quietly put it down in less than 3 seconds.

The girl subconsciously asked, "What did you just do?" โ€

"It's nothing, you have a fly in your hair, I'll help you get rid of it."

The girl thought to herself: What a liar! In the big winter, so cold, where do the flies come from? Gan Tang was able to fabricate rats for the first time, and now he can naturally fabricate flies!

was supposed to expose him, but when the words came to his lips, the ghost became: "Thank you, I hate flies......"

He only nodded slightly, and said nothing else, and in the afternoon, he noticed that the girl was sitting closer to him.

Of course, he has a burden in his heart, and the road ahead is still very long, and the possibilities for exploration are also very strong...... Sometimes it is inevitable to expose cynicism and self-abandonment, which is human nature.

Gantang is a human being, not a god, and never wants to become a god who is neither sad nor happy, neither angry nor angry, neither resentful nor hateful, nor arguing, nor heard.

That kind of existence is like a walking dead in his eyes.

When the little girl asked Gan Tang that she could change the world by herself.

He responded: "I may not reach the Aristotelian realm in this life, but at least I can work in this direction, the sleepy man in the iron house, I may not be able to wake up others, but at least I can move towards the light......"

The little girl's eyes were shining, and she blinked, "I can follow you......"

Song Hua rushed up at an inopportune time and said excitedly: "Lord Wang, there is news." โ€

Gan Tang knew that the time to come finally came, glanced at the little girl, and smiled apologetically: I have official business, I don't know what, I'll go back first. โ€

The little girl was a little attached to the past, but the girl's shyness gave up the impulse.

Back on the second floor of the foreign bank, Li Mo'an, Pei Sui, Shao Huan, Zhang Ma and others were already waiting here.

Zhang Ma reported: "Fan Sui, who defected to the Yan State, set sail two days ago with the warships of the Yan State Naval Division, and the target was in the direction of Shuangqi Island, but there was a slight deviation from the estimate of the prince, with more than 800 large and small warships, and the strength reached 50,000, not 30,000. โ€

Gan Tang looked at the sky outside and thought for a while: "Send a message to General Li Yu and order him to immediately set sail to the designated position to wait for the opportunity to seek a decisive battle for Fan Sui." Sent a message to Wang Mingzhi of Guangdong, ordering the Guangdong Township Army to collect the net of Shantou pirates. โ€

Song Hua continued: "Lord Wang, I'm so afraid that Lord Li Yu is not an opponent!" Our side is clearly inferior in terms of troops! โ€

Everyone else looked at Gantang fixedly.

Gan Tang pondered for a while with his head down, raised his head to look out the window, turned around, and said to Song Hua: "The curtain of war has been opened, both sides are playing cards, it's too late today, tomorrow morning you hold my greeting post, invite the envoys of various countries to come here, I invite them to tea, I hope we can have one more ......"

"Okay, no problem! It was about the time, and they all had morning classes, and it was really troublesome for these people who believed in God. โ€

"Okay!"
