389. Attack on the Wolves
In the era without the Internet, all communication relied on the transfer of information between people. In the realities and fundamentals of the sixteenth century, there was no faster transmission of information than seagoing ships.
The vanguard of the Spaniards suffered a heavy defeat at Calais, and the rest of the ships began to assemble near Guernsey, preparing to attack the English Channel, attack and besiege London with the Thames at its core, and force Britain to surrender or defeat it outright.
Hearing this, Drake and I let out a long breath. The surprise attack on the Third Fleet of the Spanish Armada greatly angered the enemy, causing them to abandon the safer, more effective, and cost-effective way of capturing the strongholds, and instead resorted to a pig assault on heavily fortified London.
It's something you've only dreamed of, but you can't ask for. Not to mention that the Thames itself has limited navigability, it is impossible to allow so many Spanish ships to pass together, and they can't give full play to their scale advantage, just the dense shore defense is enough for the Spaniards to drink a few pots, let alone defeat the British in one fell swoop by breaking through head-on!
Of course, we can't be careless, and in the face of Spain's constant pressure, we once again agreed on a new way of fighting - wolf pack tactics.
This is a decision made by me and Drake, we are not opponents, but harassment and sneak attacks are completely within our reach.
The fleet I am in now is a light high-speed fleet composed of five Calais clippers, with no regrets on my left flank and Chen Kui on my right, all of which are extremely fast light fleets.
All ships are equipped with the latest guns, and the ultimate range can reach or exceed two nautical miles. The sail of the ship is also full consideration of the extreme speed of various situations, and it can reach 22 or 3 knots under the condition of favorable wind and water, and it can reach at least 12 knots in time!
This was already quite an astonishing speed before the advent of the Age of Steam, at least among the best known ships. This is also exactly what meets the strategic and tactical needs of today—containing, harassing, attacking, and luring the enemy.
Blazing speed and equally transcendent artillery ensure that we can harass the enemy while still keeping ourselves alive. Those who can beat me can't catch up with me, and those who can catch up with me can't beat me, this is our philosophy of harassment tactics.
Of course, there are more than a dozen fleets similar to ours, and we have only one purpose, to drag the enemy to the death before the arrival of the giant storm that is predicted to come in half a month, so that they cannot advance or retreat!
My target location is ST.A, a small island in the north-east of Guernsey and west of Little Ormonville
E, it is said that the enemy's outposts are gathered on this small island with a name called C
Inside Abby's Harbor.
On the one hand, they want to take shelter from the wind and rain, and on the other hand, they want to use this place as a springboard to find loopholes in our defense, and take the English Channel with lightning speed and with the main force!
On this palm-sized island, there were no more than 10,000 Spanish sailors and about 40 large warships, not counting small and medium-sized warships.
St.A
The Spaniards on Island E are like a nail, stuck in our throats, so that we can't go up or down.
It seems that although the opponent has adopted a more aggressive frontal offensive tactic, it still adopts a stable posture under the guidance of the master, and there are not too many opportunities for us.
If there is no chance, then create it.
Night, night again. Like ghosts, the five Calais clippers sailed swiftly across the English Channel towards the target island. Five or six nautical miles away, we saw the forward sentinel ships of the Spaniards.
These small ships were like a layer of outer armor, tightly guarding the main force of the Spanish navy inside, cruising non-stop on the periphery of the defensive circle.
There are about three or four boats as far as the eye can see, and these small boats have a displacement of no more than fifty or sixty tons, and they are absolute cannon fodder, but they play an important role here.
"Stop the boat." I ordered. The Nine Ghosts immediately carried out my order, and the five warships came to a steady and quiet stop two nautical miles outside the opponent's defensive circle.
There is still a distance of about two nautical miles from this layer of defense to the inner circle, and in order to make the enemy feel pain, to tear a piece of flesh from them, we must be within two nautical miles of the opponent's inner circle!
Two nautical miles is a charge distance for the navy, but there is still a gap between their reaction and catching up, and it is this time difference that we have to fight!
Looking at those cruising boats, how can you break the outer defensive ring without disturbing the main force? I was thinking about how to solve it, and suddenly I had an idea, and I had a plan in my heart.
I pointed to the Nine Ghosts and said, "Bump into it, bump into it quietly!" The enemy's boats would not be able to withstand our ramming, and after sinking them, we immediately turned around and bombarded the most dense area of the enemy ships! ”
I looked at the rows of ships and lights, and added in a low voice: "No matter what the outcome of the battle is, turn around in five minutes and start to attack while evacuating, understand?" ”
The chief of staff immediately said that he understood, and went down to arrange the plan of action.
Seven or eight minutes later, I felt only a slight jolt under my feet, and the fleet was activated!
As the ship accelerated, my mood gradually became agitated. In the previous life, the cat was in Yokohama, living a life of three points and one line every day, who would have thought that one day I would be able to win in the battlefield like this, on the ocean of happiness!
I don't reject this kind of nervousness, but I am even more excited and high-pitched by the oncoming wind! I was even looking forward to the moment when the boat crashed sooner, like the feeling of riding a roller coaster rushing downhill, and there was a feeling of tension and suffocation in the lower half of my body!
It's close! It's getting closer! I even heard slogans shouted in Spanish by sailors on enemy ships. They're turning the bow of the ship and preparing to head back!
We're sure to surprise them!
The speed of the ship is getting faster and faster, and it has reached top speed by less than 200 meters near the enemy ship! In the thin rain curtain, five ships flew like five sharp arrows and rushed towards the enemy's small ships!
Eventually, they spotted us, and a hurried shout began to be heard from the ship, and I knew how to turn the bow of the ship to prevent us from hitting the belly!
But how can it be that simple? Driving a boat is not like driving a car, as soon as you hit the steering wheel, you will immediately change direction - no matter how you turn when driving the boat, there is a rudder cycle, during which the hull will continue to slide forward in the original direction by inertia, and wait until the rudder is fully turned in place, so that it can travel normally in the expected direction.
But the distance of 100 meters is fleeting, almost a blink of an eye! I looked at the enemy ships that were getting closer and closer, and I took a steady step and held the mainmast tightly!
"Poof!"
I just felt the hull of the boat slam and my body rush forward with inertia, and I almost fell to the ground! Fortunately, I was able to walk steadily, and I didn't fall out, but stabilized my body again.
"Chisel through! Chisel through! The sailors shouted: "The enemy ship enters the water, quickly sinks!" ”
The deck was boiling, and the boatswain, while directing the sailors on the deck to attack the enemy who had fallen into the water with muskets, called out to the helmsman to the left full rudder, and struck the ship horizontally, and all the guns began to fire five minutes of rapid fire at the local ship crowd, regardless of consumption!
"Boom boom"! The cannon began to fire, mixed with the crisp sound of muskets firing, and I stood on the right side of the ship, looking at the sparks rising in the distance, and my heart was filled with emotion.
War, the eternal theme of humanity, represents death and destruction, yet it is so fascinating in itself. It's really the most difficult paradox in the world to crack!
Five minutes, just five minutes, under the gunners' firing regardless of consumption, the new artillery showed extremely powerful power! With the hull full of artillery and fifty guns on one side, in just five minutes, our fleet fired nearly 3,000 new bursting shells at the enemy camp!
Flames erupted in enemy harbors, setting nearly a third of the enemy ships on fire - of course, the flames on the outside were unsustainable in the rain that continued, but the flames that pierced through the decks and cabins and penetrated the interior of the enemy ships grew stronger and stronger!
One of the battleships may have been hit in the ammunition compartment, and suddenly a huge explosion burst out from the belly of the ship! The boat was immediately broken in two, and several ships around it were also affected, igniting a raging flame!
The goal has been reached! I looked at my pocket watch, and our ship seemed to be on the alarm clock, and in one to five minutes, the hull immediately shook again, and we began to prepare to evacuate!
Almost at the same time, six or seven ships lined up in the outer circle of the local fleet began to speed up and chase after them! They had clearly escaped the first round of shelling, were not badly damaged, and were now chasing us at full speed in anger!
But how can we possibly let them get their wish? The Spanish ships were all big ships, and there were more than 600 sailors on any one ship, and if they chased them, there would be no life or death!
But our fleet is all about speed, how can they be caught? We are wolves, the Spaniards are tigers. Tigers are terrifying, but they can't outrun the clever wolves!
So, in the unwilling eyes of the Spaniards, the distance between us is getting farther and farther away, and there is no hope for them to chase. In addition, between the swing of the hull, the guns on the rear side of the ship also saw the right time to constantly throw fierce artillery fire at them, which also made them unaffordable!
After chasing for a while, the Spaniards also felt that such a chase was pointless, and that it would only increase casualties, so they prepared to turn around and return. Who knew that they had just turned the hull of the boat with great difficulty, but they saw that the flea-like fleet behind the ass also turned the bow of the boat and chased after them again!
At the same time, the cannonballs flew at their own side as if they didn't need money, and they hit them with incredible accuracy, which made the Spaniards almost want to bite their teeth!
But when they vomited blood again and turned around, the damned thieves ran away again! These guys are like slippery loaches, and the commander of this angry fleet draws his saber and slashes the ship's handrails and sawdust!
But anger doesn't change anything. On the third U-turn, we had completely sunk one of the enemy's Flanders oars by concentrating fire, and the remaining ships were unwilling to turn their bows and sail towards the base, but they were overwhelmed by the shelling we caught up.
One of the boats even burst into the gathering place of the ships in flames, and the strong wind spread the fire in all directions, igniting several boats in the vicinity!
"Retreat"! I ordered. It's not that I don't want to continue to expand the gains, but the shells are running out, and a group of enemy ships is beginning to advance in our northwest direction, so it is obvious that we are cutting off our rear route.
Once the back road is broken, we will inevitably be caught in the urn, so it is the best policy to accept it when it is good.
The five ships began to retreat at full speed, and the enemy ships hung us in the distance, but they became farther and farther away, and finally disappeared.
In this battle, we sank two local ships and severely damaged about ten ships at almost zero cost, and other ships were injured to varying degrees!
Although it will not make the Spaniards break their muscles and bones, they will not be able to stand up many times and frequently. Our wolves attack the enemy in a variety of ways and flee at full speed. With the exception of one fleet, where the Admiral was too greedy and lost a few ships, the rest of the fleet was fruitful.
Like ferocious wolves, we rush up and tear off a piece of meat, then immediately turn around and flee, which has an extremely powerful depleting effect on the enemy - especially psychologically.
In such a situation, I believe that no matter how brave the tiger is, there will be a day when it will fall! I thought to myself that there would be an end to it.
