Chapter 870: Autumn Harvest and Agricultural Adjustment (II)
Of course, it would be a waste to leave the new provinces and the newly arrived Ruhr area unattended. Therefore, Marin plans to think of other ways to make appropriate adjustments to the agriculture and animal husbandry of these new provinces.
The province of South Münster is still under the rule of the Bishop of Conrad, so it does not need to be adjusted for the time being. The province of West Friesland, which has been cleared, has also been included in the New Agricultural Plan. As a result, the only provinces that cannot adopt new agricultural technologies and need to be adjusted are Jutland, Bremen and the newly acquired Ruhr territory.
The Ruhr area is very large, including the area south of the Ruhr River in the former kingdom of Macber, and the entire area is about 4,000 square kilometers. In order to better manage this newly controlled area, Marin established the Ruhr province. The capital of the Ruhr province is located in Bochum, Marin's hometown of life.
The original Baron of Bochum had already followed John II, Duke of Cliffor, to the Lower Guedes region and received good land compensation. Then, after Baron Bochum left, Bochum City was naturally vacated and became Marin's new territory. Moreover, it is a territory that is completely controlled.
Therefore, Marin simply set up the capital of the Ruhr region in the city of Bochum, and set up a barracks here to station 3,000 troops to protect the local security.
……
Although it is not possible to implement new agricultural technologies in the Ruhr, Jutland and Bremen provinces for the time being, it would be wasteful to ignore them at all. As a result, Marin decided to carry out a certain degree of adjustment and reform in these three provinces to avoid land waste.
For example, while it is not possible to promote the full set of new agricultural technologies, Marin intends to release some of the benefits – for example, to promote the use of farming cattle in the three provinces.
Today, Marin imports tens of thousands of cattle from the Crimean Khanate every year. Today, the number of cattle in Beihai has reached tens of thousands. If it is used to kill and eat meat, it is simply a terrible thing. Therefore, Marin planned to divide the cattle and supply them for the cultivation of the various estates. With more livestock, the three new provinces will be able to cultivate more land.
Promote the use of cultivated cattle, mainly to promote the application of cattle nose rings. Most cattle, as long as they put on the cow nose ring, can basically cultivate the land honestly. But there are also more irritable bulls, but after castration, most of them will be honest. If you are not honest if you are castrated, then you deserve to be killed and eaten......
Although there are now many horses used for arable land all over Europe, the cost of raising them is high, resulting in a limited number of them. As a result, large areas of the Ruhr, Bremen and Jutland provinces are not highly developed due to a lack of livestock on arable land.
And Marin now has about 20,000 head of cattle surplus in his hands, and if he puts it into these areas, even if he does not adopt new agricultural technology, it will be no problem to cultivate an additional one or two million acres of arable land.
……
In addition to this, Marin also intends to invest more in animal husbandry. It just so happens that the three new provinces cannot adopt new agricultural technologies for the time being, so it is better to focus on the development of animal husbandry.
In particular, Jutland in Jutland is the best region for the development of animal husbandry. With an area of more than 20,000 square kilometers, Jutland is the largest province of the Grand Duchy of North Sea.
Previously, Marin had thought about developing agriculture in Jutland. However, it is actually more suitable for the development of animal husbandry. The land area here is vast and there are many meadows. Although the climate is not so warm and can be used to develop animal husbandry, there is no problem.
In particular, Marlin had previously used merino sheep and English fine-wool sheep to crossbreed a new species of fine-wool sheep suitable for the climate of Europe and North America, the North Sea sheep.
At the beginning, Marin collected tens of thousands of ewes from England and sent them to the Laayoune steppe in Western Sahara to breed with the merino rams that Marin got from Spain, and almost killed all 408 rams there.
After that, 10,000 pregnant English ewes were brought back to East Friesland and nearly 20,000 lambs were born.
Of course, this is not to say that these nearly 20,000 lambs are suitable for breeding as a new breed. Because, Marin requires optimal breeding.
As a result, the nearly 20,000 lambs were divided into more than 400 units according to their father's line. Then, the department in charge of breeding will observe it......
The purpose of the observation is mainly to select the part of the lamb with the finest wool and the fastest growth......
After that, about 5,000 lambs are selected and re-bred......
Sheep have a short growth cycle, and within a year they are sexually mature and ready for reproduction. Then, these selected lambs began to breed again, and then formed a new stable breed - Beihai sheep......
North Sea sheep X maturity within a year, and at the same time can be pregnant twice a year, giving birth to about two cubs at a time. In this way, in the past three years, in addition to the first year is the growth period of these 5,000 breeding sheep, now, the number of 5,000 Beihai sheep has expanded to more than 20,000.
And the wool that these North Sea sheep are sheared is of very high quality, only slightly worse than the wool of authentic Merino sheep, and much better than the English wool.
Marin was very excited and ordered that these North Sea sheep should not be killed casually. Of all the North Sea sheep, only the ram doesn't need much. Therefore, Marin allowed to eliminate some of the rams that were not strong. All other North Sea sheep should be preserved, and special attention should be paid to the breeding of the flock, so as to expand the number of North Sea sheep as soon as possible. In the future, the wool sheep of the Beihai Kingdom will only use the Beihai sheep. The rest of the sheep will be eliminated.
Of course, this is only wool sheep. For meat sheep, Marin also sent people to breed them. Among the crossbreeds of merino sheep and English sheep that were eliminated, Marin also sent people to select hundreds of small lambs that were not fine enough but grew quickly, and cultivated them as meat sheep breeds. In this way, it can also meet the people's consumption demand for mutton to a certain extent. And this meat sheep was named the German Merino sheep by Marin......
However, the number of German merino sheep is very small, and only about 300 of them meet the requirements. After two years of breeding, it can reach about 1,000.
However, although the quality of the wool of this German merino sheep is not as good as that of the North Sea sheep, it is not much worse. After all, they also have the bloodline of Merino sheep and English sheep. In this way, they can provide lamb at the same time as wool of no low quality. At least, it's better than the current quality of British wool.
It can provide both lamb and wool of good quality. Marin can believe that in the future, this kind of sheep will be the main breed of colonial expansion. After all, the colony was sparsely populated and could not carry out large-scale agricultural production. Therefore, sheep farming, which can be used with the help of sheepdogs, may be the mainstay of the colony. And this kind of German merino sheep, which can provide both mutton and good quality wool for the colonists, is definitely against the sky......
……
In addition to cultivating two breeds of sheep, Marlin has recently purchased a large number of Charolais cattle from the Charolais region of France, using fake French silver coins made of white copper.
This original breed of Charolais has not yet reached the quality standards of later generations. For example, many Charolais cattle still have powerful horns. But the Charolais cattle of later generations, for the safety of the cowboys, actually deliberately and selectively bred hornless cattle. In this way, when the cowboy is hedging the cow, he does not have to worry about being killed by the horns of the crazy cow.
But in any case, it is said that these original breeds of Charolais cattle grow very quickly, and they are large and strong. Fast growth and strong physique are one of the most important indicators of service cattle. With these two points, Charolais cattle are well worth breeding.
Marin then ordered the organization of professionals to concentrate on the training of Charolais cattle. However, he specifically requested that the hornless Charolais cattle be found and specially bred to strive for the Charolais cattle that would come out later, without horns. Otherwise, it's a big threat to cowboys herding cattlemen......
For the cultivated Charolais cattle, Marin also ordered that they should not be slaughtered casually. The only Charolais cattle that can be slaughtered are those that have horns and are not strong enough. As for the cows, none of them can be missing......
……
Marin believes that as long as the three major breeds of Beihai sheep, German merino sheep and Charolais cattle are cultivated, it will be difficult for the animal husbandry of Beihai to be underdeveloped in the future. The Ruhr, Bremen and Jutland provinces, where new agricultural technologies are not available...... In particular, Jutland, which has a large area, will certainly have a lot to offer in the future in animal husbandry......
