Chapter 19: The Closing Battle II
When Chen Dao and Randolph arrived in the southern suburbs of Kutno, it was already late that day.
After disembarking from the carriage, the artillerymen assembled under the command of Lieutenant Randolph and set up camp in the area divided by Student, where the cooks began to arrange dinner.
Chen Dao and Lieutenant Randolph huddled into a tent and discussed how to deal with the ensuing street fighting while having dinner.
As for the topic of how to deal with snipers in street battles, the two did not come to a conclusion in the end, and it was really difficult for a group of artillerymen with only 37mm anti-tank guns and 75mm infantry guns to deal with snipers in street battles.
All the two could do was to tell their gunners to follow closely behind the paratroopers, provide fire support to the paratroopers, and not to be hot-headed to do anything heroic (2) brave (b), so as not to be targeted by the Polish snipers.
While the two were discussing, there was a sudden loud roar outside the tent, and the two of them looked up at the trembling tent in unison, got up and walked outside.
German artillery was bombarding the city of Kutno, and the fire of the cannons almost illuminated the sky, and most of the city of Kutno was in flames.
"How much artillery is this? An artillery regiment? Chen Dao asked.
"One artillery regiment can't make such a big move, and two regiments can't do it, I guess which artillery brigade is directly under the headquarters of the army group." Lieutenant Randolph said.
"It's better for them to finish off all the Poles in the city, so that tomorrow's battle can be avoided." Chen Dao said.
"Those Poles hiding in the basement won't agree with you."
A herald ran to the two and said that Stud had called a meeting of the officers.
In Studenter's temporary headquarters, Student pointed to the map and said: "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, we will launch an attack on the defenders of the city of Kutno, according to the information sent by friendly forces, the defenders in the city are an infantry division and the anti-tank battalion and engineer battalion assigned to it, as well as tanks, the exact number is unknown." The task of our division was to launch an offensive to the center of the city with the 30 Infantry Division from the southwest and south of the city of Kutno.
Around the city of Kutno, in addition to us, two armored divisions and two infantry divisions attacked together, and the armored division would support one of our tank companies, which were now on the way. β
Stud then drew a map and said, "Tomorrow's battle, the 3rd Battalion and that tank company will be the main attackers, you will attack along the Nellas Street, and the 1st and 2nd Battalions will cover your left and right flanks respectively." β
After confirming some details of the battle with the three battalion commanders, Student ended the operational meeting, leaving Chen Dao and Lieutenant Randolph behind.
"Lieutenant Randolph, the 30th Infantry Division has sent a telegram asking you to lead your men back to formation, and on behalf of the 7th Air Division, I thank you and your men for your contribution to the 7th Air Division during the battle." Student said with a standard military salute to Lieutenant Randolph.
Lieutenant Randolph hurriedly straightened up and saluted back, and said, "These are just my duties as a soldier, and I don't need to thank you. When do I depart? β
"They asked you to leave tonight and return to the establishment before dawn." Student said.
"Alright, I'll go back and gather my men right away, goodbye, General." Lieutenant Randolph said and saluted Stuart and Chen before leaving.
"Wait," Stud called out to Randolph, picking up a letter from the table next to him and handing it to Randolph.
"This letter is my evaluation of your combat performance in the past few days, and you will hand him over to your superiors when you go back, as well as those 37mm anti-tank guns and 75mm infantry guns, which you can take away as the trophies of your battles these days." With a sly smile on his face, Stud added, "I guess that's good for you." β
With a grateful look on his face, Randolph stood up straight and gave another military salute to Studenter: "Thank you, General." β
"Don't leave too early, wait for me to see you off." Chen Dao said to Randolph.
"Okay, I'll wait for you." Randolph finished and left.
"General, what is my mission?" Chen Dao asked.
"Your mission is to stay with me when I am the contact person of the 1st Air Regiment." Student said.
"What else?" Chen Dao asked.
"Keep yourself safe."
"I want to participate in street fighting." Chen Dao said expressionlessly.
"Nope." Student said categorically.
"I γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»" Chen Dao still had to fight, seeing Studenter's resolute expression, he knew that no matter how much he said, it would be a waste of saliva, so he changed his mouth and said: "Okay, I obey the order." β
"Good." Seeing that Chen Dao agreed to stay, Studenter's expression softened again, and said in his heart that if he didn't send you back to Berlin, His Excellency the Marshal would be violently gone, and as soon as it dawned tomorrow, he would no longer have to serve His Excellency this headache "brother-in-law", and he would finally be relieved.
Stedent has arranged for someone to build an improvised runway, and a Fi-156 reconnaissance plane will land here at dawn tomorrow morning, and then take Chen Dao away.
"Major Rosen, where are you going?" Seeing that Chen Dao was leaving, Stedent hurriedly stopped him.
"I'm going to see off Lieutenant Randolph and I'll be back shortly." Chen Dao explained.
Leaving Student, Chen Dao lit a cigarette and walked towards Lieutenant Randolph's station with a frown in his mouth.
I knew that I would not leave the subordinates of the 7th Air Defense Battalion to take care of the wounded, but now I have become a bare-bones commander, who has been commanded by people all day long, and the only friend I can chat with and relieve my boredom, Lieutenant Randolph, is now leaving, and he will really be a "lonely man" when he leaves.
Chen Dao was depressed in his heart, and walked to the camp with a heavy face.
Lieutenant Randolph was directing his subordinates to pack their bags, and when he saw Chen Dao walking towards him with a heavy face, he hurriedly greeted him.
"Major γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»"
"Don't call me Major, call me Heinz." Chen Dao said.
"Well, Heinz, I'll γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»" The parting was imminent, and Lieutenant Randolph also had mixed feelings, and he didn't know what to say for a while.
"Everything?" Chen Dao asked.
"Packed up."
"Come, get in the car, I'll give you a ride." Chen Dao pointed to the carriage and said.
A depressed Lieutenant Randolph climbed into the carriage, Chen Dao sat on his right, and the convoy departed.
"When the Polish campaign is over and my new position is decided, I will take the initiative to contact you." Chen Dao said suddenly.
"What are you going to do in the future?"
"I suddenly had an idea, I wanted to form an Air Marine, and my initial idea was that this was a regimental γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»unit," Chen Daotao talked to Lieutenant Randolph about his plan.
Lieutenant Randolph became a loyal listener to Chen Dao, and after listening for a long time, he found that Chen Dao did not mean to get out of the car, and took the initiative to remind him several times, but Chen Dao diverted the topic, so he had to continue listening.
In Chen Dao's tirade, the convoy finally stopped, and the station of the 30 Infantry Division arrived.
"So soon?" Chen Dao was surprised, "That's it, it just so happens that I also want to discuss the tactics of playing at the same time with you, I will stay with you for one night temporarily, and I will go back early tomorrow morning." β
Lieutenant Randolph looked at his watch, and saw that it was already past 12 o'clock in the middle of the night, and it was very unrighteous to drive people away at this time, so he agreed.
γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»
At the station of the 7th Air Division, Student returned to the division headquarters after a final inspection of the operational deployment, washed his face and was about to fall asleep when he suddenly remembered something.
Summoning the staff officer on duty, Student asked, "Is Major Rosen back?" β
"Nope." The staff officer on duty replied.
Stud hurriedly ordered a visit to Randolph's station, and a short time later a paratrooper galloped back on a warhorse.
"General, there's no one there."
Student wiped the sweat from his forehead, crossed his arms and pondered for a while, and then said: "Send someone to find it immediately, and, contact the 30 Infantry Division and ask them if Lieutenant Randolph has returned?" Is Major Rosen with Lieutenant Randolph? β
Without waiting for the staff officer on duty to carry out the order, another staff officer approached Student with a telegram.
"I just received a telegram from Major Rosen, saying that he was staying in the 30th Infantry Division tonight and would not be back until tomorrow."
Student snatched the telegram, glanced at it, and tore it to pieces.
How can I say that I am timid and afraid of the dark, and I dare not walk at night, so I borrowed a night in the 30 Infantry Division, when I am an idiot? This kid must have done it on purpose.
Thinking of the plane that would land early tomorrow morning, and of the furious Field Marshal Goering waiting in Berlin, Student suddenly had an urge to lead his men into the 30th Infantry Division and kidnap the annoying "brother-in-law" His Excellency.
Impulsiveness is just impulse, and Student still gave up this unrealistic idea, after all, the internal affairs of the Air Force still have to be solved in a "harmonious" way, even if it is a shame, it cannot be thrown to the army, otherwise how will he and his subordinates be mixed in the Air Force circle in the future.
Hopefully he'll be back sooner tomorrow, and Stud has succeeded in γ»γ»γ»γ»γ»γ» insomnia with a good vision.
