Chapter 18 Supplies

The Zhurav bomb shelter was the result of an accident that stored a large number of military supplies.

Shulka visited the Brest Fortress in modern times, and he remembers that the tour guide once told such a story:

"Before the outbreak of the war, a batch of supplies arrived at the Kobrin fortress. But because it was late at night and Captain Herzsky, who was in charge of the warehouse, was on vacation in the city of Brest, the motorists drove the car with supplies into the Zhurav dugout and parked it temporarily, ready to move into the warehouse the next day...... No one knew about the supplies, and it wasn't until Major Gavrilov retreated here in layers of defense to take refuge in this bomb shelter. But by then it was already too late, and there were less than a hundred people left in Major Gavrilov's troops! ”

With Shulka here, he certainly wouldn't let that happen.

"I'm pretty sure there's no water there!" "Especially that bomb shelter, they have even become the toilet of the 372nd regiment!" ”

Several soldiers snickered.

"I'm pretty sure there's water there, Comrade Matvey!" Shulka insisted: "What's more, even if there is no water there, what do we have to lose?" The biggest loss is to finish the task late, don't you say? ”

Hearing this, Matvey stopped talking.

"Take me there, Comrade Matvey!" Shulka ordered: "If the platoon commander punishes us for this, I will take all the responsibility, and I will say that I ordered you to go!" ”

"Yes, Comrade Platoon Commander!" Matvey replied reluctantly, then turned to the right rear and said, "We should go in this direction, but we must be careful, because the sentries may think we are deserters!" ”

Going backwards is indeed considered a deserter, and is usually at a loss for words, as Shulka has learned.

That didn't change Shulka's mind, though, as he insisted that Matvey lead the way.

As Shulka and his party were advancing towards the Zhurav bomb shelter, a fierce burst of gunfire was heard behind them, it was a German machine gun.

It was clear that the other two classes had a problem getting water.

"What are you doing, Shulka?" Okunev ran to Shulka's side and said in a low voice: "Maybe you are right, it is indeed dangerous to get water. But you should know that choosing to hide instead of carrying out the mission can be even more dangerous! ”

"Don't worry, Okunev!" Shulka said: "Things are not what you think, I am on a mission!" ”

The dugout was a bit far away, but Matvey was familiar with the terrain, and although he had poor eyesight, as he said, he could walk around the fortress twice with his eyes closed.

This may not be bragging, because the stars and moon were not bright and the visibility was very poor that night, and Okunev, who was also familiar with the terrain, sometimes hesitated, but Matvey's footsteps did not stop at all...... He had a map in his head, and he even knew where a Soviet outpost could be avoided.

Twenty minutes later, the group arrived at the Zhurav bomb shelter.

"This is it!" Matvey said he raised his head forward, a little surprised when he noticed that the iron door was locked.

"Strange!" Matvey said, "It's not usually locked!" ”

"Maybe they knew the Germans were coming!" Okunev said.

Matvey grabbed a rock from the side and was about to smash it at the lock, but Shulka blocked him.

"Don't do it!" Shulka said: "It will make a lot of noise, and they may think of us as Germans!" ”

Matvey couldn't help but glance at Shulka in surprise, and his face couldn't help but be a little embarrassed...... As a veteran, he didn't even think of this.

"Let me try!" A private named Fovalkov volunteered to squeeze forward.

"How do you try?" Shulka asked.

Fovalikov didn't say anything, and as if by juggling, he took out a wire from his hand and put it into the keyhole to tinker for a while, but in a few seconds he heard a crunch of the lock's "cough".

"Wow, Fovalkov!" The soldiers, including Shulka, were all impressed by him, except for Matvey, who had a strange expression on his face, but said nothing.

Later Shulka learned that Fovalkov's hand had inadvertently revealed his identity...... He was a thief, and soldiers used to lose this and that for no apparent reason, including Matvey.

When I opened the iron door, as Matvey said, there was a stench in my nose.

Although they knew that there could be no one inside, the group still held their guns and carefully divided into two rows and walked against the wall.

It was spacious, but nothing could be seen in the dark patch until Okunev turned on a flashlight.

And then......

"God, what is this?" Okunev couldn't help but exclaim: "It's a car, a car with things!" ”

This is evident because the rear compartment of the car is stacked high, and although it is covered in army green canvas, the protruding edges and corners of the boxes can still be seen.

Matvey looked at Shulka in surprise, then ran up a few steps, drew his thorn, cut the rope that tied the canvas, and lifted it hard, and a cart of supplies appeared in front of everyone.

"Open it up, Matvey!" Okunev was already a little impatient, and if he hadn't been holding a flashlight, he would have done it himself.

In fact, there is no need for Okunev to say that Matvey has already done it, he moved the next box, and then pried the lid open with a military thorn, and it was a mortar.

"Great!" "It's a batch of munitions, and we're short of them!" Matvey said. ”

"Here's the food!" Fovalkov on the other side shouted: "A whole load of bread!" ”

"There's water here!" Another fighter shouted: "Oh my God, and vodka, Comrade squad leader is right, we are in the right place!" ”

"There are two dozen cars!" Okunev counted them with great emotion, and then exclaimed: "This is simply a treasure trove!" ”

……

Okunev is right, this is indeed a treasure trove.

During the war years, especially when surrounded by the enemy and in the midst of a severe shortage of supplies and ammunition, nothing was as important as these supplies.

So the soldiers couldn't help but cheer, and a few of them even picked up the bread and took a big bite.

Shulka should have stopped them, because it was the property of the army, and even if they were the first to find out, they wouldn't be able to get close to the water. As a squad leader, Shulka has an obligation to stop them, and even do some ideological work on them.

But Shulka didn't do that, and not only did he not do it, but he joined in...... Whatever, if he hadn't found these things himself, everyone would still be hungry, so what's wrong with a few bites?!
