Prologue: Return to Wolfenstein
August 21, 2012, picturesque Alps.
Friedrich-von-Hoffmann, wearing the Knight's Iron Cross, stands on the platform and looks into the distance. It was a special day for him, as his grandfather, Hoffman Sr., a lieutenant colonel in the Third Reich High Command, died in a car accident on August 21, 1942, where he served at the site of the Eagle's Nest, the headquarters of the Reich.
The Knight's Iron Cross he wore on his chest was also a relic left by his grandfather - although the Hoffman family had several famous people during the Holy Roman Empire, in the 20th century, there was no other history to show off except for the elder Hoffmann in the Wehrmacht of the Third Reich, and this knight's Iron Cross was the only thing to be proud of. Even in the most difficult times of the post-war period, my father kept it in his possession, rather than exchanging it for money, as many families do.
Every year on August 21, my father would wipe down the medal that he had treasured for a long time and wear it, and take the whole family to the old site of the Eagle's Nest to pay their respects, and after my father's death, it was Hoffman who brought the whole family to come. Unfortunately, before this departure, his son suddenly fell ill with pneumonia, and his wife had to stay in his hometown in Hamburg to take care of him.
Because of the influence of Hoffmann Sr., Hofmann joined the Wehrmacht after graduating with a doctorate, dedicated to the study of World War II history and military strategy, and he has achieved great success in this field at a young age, enjoying a high reputation in military and World War II historiography, and he has also served as a historical consultant for many World War II games and war films, and has been a leading member of the expert group in the famous "Hearts-of-Iron" series of games.
After the war, the Eagle's Nest has been transformed into Germany's first mountain resort, and apart from the dismantling of all the equipment, the other facilities and furnishings are the same as they were 70 years ago. Every year, people from all over the world come to visit, and as the sun sets, Hoffmann, who is concerned about his son's condition, decides to end his condolences and return to Hamburg overnight.
The elevator is still the same one that was erected 70 years ago, and it is a large one that can accommodate 53 people at a time, and although it has been weathered, it is still in working operation thanks to the good quality of German manufacturing and the careful maintenance of the Agency. There were not many people in the elevator, and standing next to Hoffman was also a young man wearing the Iron Cross, but at a glance, he knew that the imitation was made in the 21st century, and when he saw that the other party was staring intently at the real guy on his chest, Hoffman smiled and didn't care. The elevator descends at a constant speed and will reach the ground in a few tens of seconds. But suddenly, Hoffman felt the elevator descend rapidly, and before he could react, it was pitch black.
"Ah............h
The next day, the major newspapers in Germany carried a front-page headline about the accident at the Eagle's Nest site, a total of 7 people died and 1 person was missing, and the local police department had promised to find the whereabouts of the missing people as soon as possible.
I don't know how long it took, but the unconscious Hoffman seemed to feel a glimmer of light, and he tried to open his eyes, but his eyelids were as heavy as lead. In the midst of the confusion, a man dressed in the Wehrmacht uniform of the Wilderness Gray walked up to him.
The "child......" kind voice, kind face, and appearance looked a bit like his father, but Hoffman knew it was certainly not—his father had never served in the military, let alone wore a Third Reich uniform.
Still, it's a bit like a grandfather.
Have you already reached heaven?
"Child, you are a lucky one, God willing, if it were not for this Iron Cross, you would have gone to heaven, but you are also a most unfortunate one, because you are about to face such a tricky and difficult imperial ......"
Knotty?
Difficulty?
Imperial?
Hoffman had countless question marks swirling in his head, what did this mean exactly?
Before he could figure it out, the light that had surrounded his grandfather had vanished, and old Hoffman seemed to fade into a faint wisp of green smoke in the air. Hoffman was startled, and seemed to have a different strength in his body, he suddenly opened his eyes, trying to reach out and grab the other party......
