Chapter 1 The Late Eastern Han Dynasty

Next Chapter

A great dynasty that has experienced many vicissitudes will eventually perish.

This is a historical trend in China over the past 5,000 years.

This includes a dynasty - the Eastern Han Dynasty.

And when it comes to the beginning of the Three Kingdoms, we have to talk about the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty.

So how did the Eastern Han Dynasty bring about its own destruction?

This has to start with the Eastern Han Dynasty Huan, the second emperor of Ling.

The Eastern Han Dynasty lasted for about two hundred years, including in the middle and late Eastern Han Dynasty. The queen mother is called the will, and her relatives are involved in politics. The young monarchs who succeeded to the throne at an early age mostly relied on eunuchs to govern themselves. The history is known as the dispute between the eunuchs.

In fact, one of the main reasons for the demise of the Eastern Han Dynasty was that relatives and eunuchs alternately held power, and the struggle between relatives and eunuchs was established.

Why did it happen that there was a conflict between a relative and a eunuch?

This is mainly due to the serious trend of the dictatorship of foreign relatives during the Eastern Han Dynasty.

What about the emperor's relatives and eunuchs?

In fact, relatives are friends of the emperor's relatives. For example, the great general He Jin. It is a relative of the Empress Dowager He, the mother of the young emperor of the Han Dynasty.

The eunuchs were to help the emperor convey the edict and take charge of the documents. The people around the emperor.

Everyone needs to pay attention to one thing, the eunuchs of the Eastern Han Dynasty are not the eunuchs that everyone generally agrees on.

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the corruption of the dictatorship of foreign relatives caused dissatisfaction among the eunuchs and emperors in the imperial court.

And when the emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty grew up, he had to face the problem of pro-government. What should be done with the dictatorship of foreign relatives at this time? to seize power.

At this time, the person who could help the emperor seize power was the eunuch. Eunuchs for their own benefit. asked the emperor or the emperor to kill his relatives.

For example, Dou Wu, a relative of Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty, was killed by the eunuch Jiaozhao.

And when the power of the relatives was strong, the emperor used the eunuchs to contain the relatives. It often creates a situation of dictatorship of the eunuch group.

The stakes are constantly cut, and the rationalization is chaotic.

It's the battle of the eunuchs, such a battle. gave rise to corrupt politics in the imperial court. The economy is withering, and class contradictions are becoming more and more acute.

When Emperor Liu Zhi of the Han Dynasty ascended the throne at the age of fifteen. Relatives and eunuchs are like setting up a young and ignorant little emperor in order to continue to control the government. Only then did Liu Zhi be established, which was later Emperor Huan of the Han Dynasty.

During the 21-year reign of Emperor Liu Zhi of the Han Dynasty, the first 13 years were basically a puppet emperor.

In 159 AD, Emperor Huan of the Han Dynasty and the eunuchs together killed his cousin Liang. Regained imperial power. Later, Emperor Huan of the Han Dynasty made the thirteen eunuchs who conspired with him marquis. It is the eunuch who interferes in politics. As a result of eunuchs' interference, eunuchs were more corrupt than their relatives. This situation led to the dissatisfaction of the scholars. So, the scholar and his relatives joined forces to fight against the eunuchs.

The struggle between the two sides was very fierce, which eventually led to two party failures. All the upright scholars and doctors were expelled from the court.

As a result, the Eastern Han Dynasty was on the verge of extinction.

Liu Zhi's corrupt rule left the state financially starved. The people's poor livelihood laid the groundwork for the later demise of the Eastern Han Dynasty.

After the death of Emperor Liu Zhi of the Han Dynasty. Emperor Liu Hong of the Han Dynasty succeeded to the throne.

After Liu Hong, Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty, succeeded to the throne. He trusted the eunuchs more than Emperor Huan of Han. Emperor Ling of Han also appointed the government to eunuchs, which made the political situation worse.

It is under such corrupt rule. caused discontent among the people. Even to the time of the Spirit Emperor. There has been a phenomenon of "selling officials".

In fact, "selling officials" is to let people use money to buy officials. Many Qing officials did not have the money to buy officials when they took office. And suicide ...

Among them is a man named Sima Zhi.

There is also the fact that Emperor Ling does not do his business every day. Love to study what kind of drainage system and so on. Ignore the government. This has aroused the dissatisfaction of many ordinary people and white officials. Chaofeng is falling day by day.

Under such politics, the dissatisfaction of the masses of the people has been aroused. During the time of Emperor Ling of Han, there were several popular uprisings. But they were all suppressed. Moreover, the imperial court suppressed the first few popular uprisings with extremely bloody means.

To sum up the above discussion. The fall of the Eastern Han Dynasty was in addition to the dispute between the eunuchs and the corrupt rule of the imperial court. There is one more reason. It was Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty who divided the state pastor.

Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty divided the state pastor. It not only strengthened the power of local heroes. It has also further strengthened the military power at the local level. The management of the central military power was decentralized.

At that time, the Eastern Han Dynasty was divided into thirteen states, and each state had a strong and powerful state, and these powerful people took advantage of Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty to divide the state pastor. Take the opportunity to expand power and armed forces. Central control is on the verge of breaking out. The de facto rule of the Eastern Han Dynasty has existed in name only.

In the late years of the reign of Emperor Ling of Han. Finally, the Yellow Turban Rebellion broke out. And Liangzhou and other places are also in the midst of ongoing turmoil.

After the death of Emperor Ling of Han. Left the two little emperors in turmoil.

Needless to say, the wonderful Three Kingdoms era officially debuted.

Until 220, Cao Pi forced Emperor Liu Xie of the Han Dynasty to abdicate and establish himself as emperor. The Eastern Han Dynasty disappeared from the smoke and clouds of history.

After the Eastern Han Dynasty experienced these turmoil, the turbulent era of the division of the heroes was coming.

And this beginning came from an uprising.

The Yellow Turban Rebellion is also known as the Yellow Turban Rebellion. The Yellow Turban Rebellion was the largest peasant uprising in the late Eastern Han Dynasty.

This uprising began in the seventh year of Emperor Guanghe of Han Ling. That is, in 184 A.D.

The imperial court at that time was corrupt. The eunuchs and their relatives fought endlessly. The people are miserable. At this time, there was a major drought across the country.

In this desperate situation. Under the order of the giant deer man's horns, they rose up one after another. They wore yellow scarves on their heads and shouted the slogan "The sky is dead, the yellow sky should stand, the year is in Jiazi, and the world is auspicious". This is the famous "Yellow Turban Army".

How did the "Yellow Turban Army" arise? This starts with the Taiping Sect.

In the past, there was a group of Zhang brothers who summed up their past experience. And, he created a religion called Tianping Sect.

This religion is different from the current cults, and it was the spiritual sustenance of the broad masses of the people at that time who yearned for a better life.

And their leaders are the three brothers Zhang Jiao, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang.

They spread widely among the masses by means of proselytizing.

Among them, Zhang Jiao called himself a "great sage and good teacher", and he secretly preached for more than ten years. There are more than 100,000 believers. At that time, there were believers in Qingzhou, Xuzhou, Youzhou, Jizhou, Jingzhou, Yangzhou and other places.

A lot of people? What to do? So in order to facilitate management, Zhang Jiao divided these people into thirty-six square departments. There are more than 10,000 people in the big square and thousands of people in the small side.

In this way, the "Yellow Turban Army" was formed.

Among them, the leader of the uprising, Zhang Jiao, called himself "General Tiangong". Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang are called "Digong Generals" and "Rengong Generals".

The believers in the various ministries threatened: "The sky is dead, the yellow sky should stand, the age is in Jiazi, and the world is auspicious." Among them, "Cangtian" alludes to the Eastern Han Dynasty. And "Yellow Sky" refers to Taiping Road.

It can be seen from this that the "Yellow Turban Army" is also organized and disciplined internally.

At this time, the "Yellow Turban Army" had been planning for a long time. Waiting for an opportunity.

In 184, Zhang Jiao's subordinate Ma Yuanyi prepared to raise troops in Yecheng to revolt. At this time, because one of them was high-secret, the plan was leaked. Later, he was caught by the imperial court and was sentenced to car splitting in Luoyang. Later, Emperor Ling took advantage of this to kill more than 1,000 believers.

At this time, Zhang Jiao knew that the matter had been leaked. The pursuers were imminent, so they ordered all parties to revolt together. Because the people together all wore "yellow scarves", this uprising is known as the "Yellow Turban Uprising" in history.

The Yellow Turban Rebellion began relatively smoothly at first. Later, after Emperor Ling learned about it. Huangfu Song and Zhu Yu were sent to fight against the Yingchuan Yellow Turban Army, and later Cao Cao also joined in. The three of them fought together. Defeated the Yellow Turban Army in one fell swoop and beheaded tens of thousands of people. And the Yellow Turban Army is still being conscripted in various places. Later, Zhang Jiao fell ill and died. Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao were also killed by Huangfu Song, more than 100,000 people were killed, and the rebellion was quelled.

In this way, the Yellow Turban Rebellion was ruthlessly erased by history.

Why did the Yellow Turban Uprising fail?

I think there are two reasons.

The first reason was the long time taken to prepare for the uprising. It doesn't work. And most of the whistleblowers were controlled by the imperial court.

The second reason is that the Yellow Turban Army is not strong in combat. Because the Yellow Turban Army participated in the masses of the people. People are not the same. You can't focus on fighting, so defeat is inevitable.

The historical significance of the Yellow Turban Rebellion was not just an ordinary peasant uprising, it also exposed the tyranny of the Eastern Han Dynasty and laid the groundwork for the troubled times that followed.
