Chapter Eighty-Seven: Small Bridges and Big Households

Escaping from the tiger's bloody mouth and into the crocodile's mouth.

- Thai proverb

In Ledu County, Qinghai Province, when Lamei was 8 or 9 years old, in addition to having an older brother Lian Chao above, there were three younger sisters below: Yingchun, Xia He and Qiu Ju.

In order to reduce the burden on the family, her mother Wang Tianying sent Lamei to her maiden brothers in the tiger wolf's den in Nanshan, first, to let her take care of the children for her uncles' families, and secondly, she could also mix a full meal to eat.

After all, the uncle is the own uncle, and he is naturally very good to Lamei. However, men are men after all, and they are not as attentive as women. As a result, the uncles did not see many small things in their daily lives.

The aunts and uncles are different, one is meticulous and picky, the other is calculating, and the third is very selfish. Their attitude towards Lamei in front of their uncles was not bad. If the uncles were not at home, they would either hang their faces or speak with reproach, which made Lamei's heart full of grievances and depression.

Lamei has always been in a bad mood in the tiger wolf's den. Sometimes, she came to the stream at the edge of the village with her child in her arms, shed tears of sadness and grievance, told her heart to the gurgling water, and begged the stream that flows into the Huangshui River to give her parents a message and take her home quickly.

In the summer of 1948, Lamei was 13 years old. She stayed in the tiger wolf's den for 4 years. The children in the uncles' family grew up and no longer needed her care. The aunts' faces became more and more ugly. Lamei's life is also even more difficult.

One day, his father Gong Guoyuan and his brother Gong Lianchao suddenly came to their uncle's house, intending to take Lamei home.

Lamei was so happy that she hurriedly packed up her clothes and followed her father and brother down the mountain to go home.

Lamei returned to her home after a four-year absence, and worked hard from morning to night in order to behave well, for fear that her parents would send her to some relative's house again.

One day, Lamei was cleaning up the dishes and chopsticks in the kitchen when she suddenly heard the sound of someone banging on the courtyard door. She put down the dishes and chopsticks in her hand, ran out and opened the door of the courtyard, and saw an old man who looked like an official walking in with 3 or 4 people.

While looking at all corners of the courtyard, they asked, "Ga girl, is Gong Guoyuan at home?" ”

Gong Guoyuan lifted the curtain from the main room when he heard the sound, stuck out his head and said in surprise: "Yes." At. Come in. What's wrong? Why did you alarm you? ”

Ma Daren is the deputy county magistrate of Ledu County, a Huihui person, who is responsible for the county's military conscription, taxation and other affairs, and is an official who is kind to the people.

Gong Guoyuan earnestly asked the county magistrate Ma to wait for the guests to sit down, and then asked Lamei to quickly bring up the hot tea, and stood beside him anxiously, waiting for the county magistrate Ma to speak.

County Magistrate Ma blew away the tea leaves floating on the water with his mouth, took a sip of tea and swallowed it, and then said slowly: "Gong Guoyuan, the provincial government has ordered conscription again." I think that your family's Lian Chao is already 18 years old and meets the requirements for military service. ”

Gong Guoyuan was a little anxious when he heard the words of County Magistrate Ma, and said with a little stutter: "Master Ma, you know that Nao is such a son. If he leaves as a soldier, what will happen to the Nau family? In case of...... Please, be more forgiving. ”

County Magistrate Ma said unhappily: "Nao Ke has been helping you for several years." There's no hiding from anything this year. If Nao can't complete the task of conscription, Ma Fang and Han Gong said that they would remove Nao's headshell. ”

Gong Guoyuan said almost pleadingly: "Please, help me think of a way for the Nao people." ”

At this time, Wang Tianying walked out of the side room, holding a plate of pineapples in both hands, and said with a smile: "What kind of wind blew County Magistrate Ma here?" This is the pineapple that Nao stored last fall, and it tastes very good, so county magistrate Ma can eat one and taste it? ”

County Magistrate Ma smiled and picked up a pineapple and rubbed it in his hand a few times, his eyes rolled around, and said: "Nao has another way, that is, two people go to Xining City to work as errands for the family of the big official, so that they can take up a military service." Why don't you have two people in your family on an errand? ”

Gong Guo originally planned not to come out alone, but now he wants to go out of two people, and he was so anxious that beads of sweat oozed from his head, and he couldn't speak for a long time with his mouth open.

Wang Tianying was very straightforward, and immediately replied: "It's still the idea of County Magistrate Ma!" Nao's two Gavas went to Xining City on an errand, and they were in the home of a big official, so they didn't worry about eating or drinking, and they were not in danger of their lives. This is a good errand that you can't find even if you hit the lantern in the middle of the night. ”

County Magistrate Ma laughed happily. He stood up and said with a sigh of relief, "Okay." That's it. Tomorrow morning Nau will come and bring people. Hey, who was the girl who opened the courtyard door just now? ”

Wang Tianying hurriedly called Lamei over from the side room and asked her to say hello to County Magistrate Ma.

County Magistrate Ma looked at Lamei and said with a smile: "This Ga girl has pink skin, looks handsome, and has a gentle personality, so it would be good if she was a daughter-in-law for the Nao family." ”

When Lamei heard this, her face immediately turned red with shame, and she quickly hid in the side room.

Gong Guoyuan said: "Nao people are flat-headed ordinary people, where do you dare to climb the horse!" ”

Wang Tianying tugged at Gong Guoyuan's shirt and said angrily: "The county magistrate Ma is joking." Are you really climbing up the pole? ”

The next morning, Gong Lianchao took Gong Lamei to report to the Ledu County Government, and then got into the carriage to Xining with a few girls who were also Ledu.

Lamei thought that her brother went to Xining with her to work and had a strong support by her side, so she was not afraid at all, but had some yearning for Xining City.

The carriage drove quickly along the sandy avenue by the Huangshui River towards Xining City.

A cloud of smoke and dust rose from the back of the carriage. Through the dust, the hometown became farther and farther away in the eyes of Gong Lianchao and Gong Lamei, and it became more and more hazy.

On the small bridge on the bank of the Huangshui River in the northwest corner of Xining City, there lives a large family. The courtyard wall of this person's house is very tall, twice as high as the courtyard wall of the people's house who came from Pingtou, so that everyone who passes by here is full of speculation and association about the inside of the big wall. The huge courtyard gate is painted vermilion, which makes the family even more imposing. The colorful lintel is topped by a large rectangular wooden plaque painted blue. The wooden plaque bears two striking yellow letters: Hanfu.

The owner of the Han Mansion was named Han Gong, who was born on May 1, 1901 in Xunhua County, which was then part of Gansu Province, and was a descendant of the Salur people who came there during the Great Yuan Dynasty.

Han Gong hadn't studied for a day, and he didn't know a single word in Douda. In his early years, he was a cook under the Ma family, because he cooked a good meal that everyone praised, and he had the clever mouth to welcome the horse, he was taken by chance by Ma Fanghui, and he became a small leader in his army, and participated in the 3rd phase of the Army Cavalry 5th Army and the 82nd Army Officer Training Corps.

Although Han Gong has no culture, he is never afraid of death when he leads the troops to fight, and he is even more loyal to Sima Fang, so he has been promoted step by step and has become Ma Fang's desperate subway general.

In April 1931, Ma Fang sent his troops from Biandukou through the Qilian Mountains to the Hexi Corridor to expel Ma Ying, the commander of Ga who was entrenched in Ganzhou.

Han Gong was once again promoted to an official position by Ma Fang because of his outstanding achievements in the battle to capture the Hexi Corridor. He was ordered by Ma Fang to lead an army to garrison Ganzhou, and in fact became the king of grass to rule the Ganzhou region.

Han Gong stayed in Ganzhou for 10 years. He sat on the land as king, plundered and plundered people's wealth, stole the rich local cultural relics and treasures, and cut down and destroyed large areas of forests in the Qilian Mountains.

The forest resources in the Qilian Mountains are very abundant, which is extremely precious in the arid northwest and lack of green vegetation. Since the Qing Dynasty, the government has strictly forbidden anyone to enter the mountains and cut down the forests.

Han Gong is the king of the soil in Ganzhou, and the big trees in the mountains have naturally become his cash cows. Again and again, he sent his soldiers into the mountains and cut down indiscriminately. In March 1937, Han Gong sent four battalions of men and horses to enter Qilian Mountain from the Heihekou of Longshoubao in Ganzhou and the Dadu Ma, Ghee Mouth, and Xiaodu Makou of Minle, and cut down indiscriminately in Binggou Platform and Big and Small Harrier Ditch, cutting down 150,000 pine trees in Dadu Ma alone, 220,000 pine trees in Heihekou, and no less than 100,000 pine trees in other places. In the summer of the following year, when the water of the Heihe River was rising, they transported the timber down the river and forcibly sold it in nearby counties, making a fortune.

In 1939, Han Gong once again sent troops to carry out destructive logging in Dadu Ma, which caused the once dense Dadu Ma forest area to become a bald mountain in Guangshan, seriously damaging the ecological balance of the Qilian Mountains, causing drought and water shortage in the downstream areas, and seriously affecting agricultural production.

Ganzhou is an important post station on the Silk Road, and it is also an important town connecting the Central Plains with the Western Regions, Central Asia and West Asia, and has many precious historical relics.

The insatiable Han Gong will certainly not let go of the treasures of cultural relics. He stole antiquities by any means necessary. For example, the golden dome of the Golden Pagoda and the Ming Dynasty bell of the Great Buddha Temple were all stolen to Qinghai, and their whereabouts are unknown.

Han Gong sent an engineer battalion to excavate the Han tombs in the area of Xichengyi in Ganzhou, and only the excavated Han bricks paved a 7-kilometer-long road surface when the road was built, causing serious damage to this huge group of ancient tombs.

As the ruler of Ganzhou, Han Gong's wanton expropriation and extortion of the people reached an unrequited level, causing the vast number of people to suffer greatly. He repeatedly used the excuse of insufficient military salaries to forcibly levy loans to the industrial and commercial circles, occupied the gold mines in the Qilian Mountains, forcibly requisitioned camels to sell large tobacco soil, and extorted and looted people's property in the name of Qingxiang.

Later, when Han Gong evacuated Ganzhou, he requisitioned thousands of carts and snatched herds of Tibetan yaks from Qilian Mountain, and transported goods and food for him for several months, which shows how much wealth he had amassed in Ganzhou.

At the beginning of 1937, when the Red Army's Western Route Army was fighting in the Hexi Corridor, Han Gong was restrained by Ma Yuanhai, the commander-in-chief of the Ma Army's front.

In the bloody battle of Ni's camp, Han Gong's army cavalry and infantry, as the main force of the horse army, plus the militia group, surrounded the Red Army layer by layer and attacked in turn. The rear of the team was also pressed by a team of broadswords, and those who retreated in front of them were immediately beheaded.

In seven days and nights of bloody battles, Han Gong killed countless Red Army soldiers

After the defeat of the Western Route Army, Ganzhou became a concentration of prisoners and wounded and sick of the Red Army.

Han Gong used extremely cruel means to inflict harm on the Red Army prisoners. Methods of mutilation include burning, hanging, shooting, slashing, burying alive, and even skinning, digging out the heart and extracting gall. He killed 3,240 Red Army soldiers in Ganzhou, which was then renamed Zhangye County, of whom 575 were shot, 56 were burned, and 2,609 were buried alive.

Zhangye's Dongjiaochang, Niuwang Palace, Gaojiazhuang, Xiatanzi, Shilixing Palace, Hanjia Garden, Yiyuan Square, and the north city wall are all buried with the bones of Red Army soldiers.

The East Church Field became the most terrifying killing field. Han Gong's men often buried alive the wounded and sick of the Red Army in the middle of the night. They first slashed with broadswords, pickaxes, axes, and shovels, and then pushed them into the pit and buried them, dead or alive.

The next morning, the local people found that the blood around the pit was flowing like a river to the road and the fields by the roadside. Hats, backpacks, and cloth shoes were thrown on the floor. A female Red Army and two small children crawled out of the pit covered in blood, and were pulled back by the executioners and buried in the earth......

Gao Jincheng is a Christian doctor who has his own hospital in the Hexi Corridor and has a good social foundation and reputation in the local area.

The leadership of the CCP decided to use his position to carry out the rescue of captured and separated personnel of the Red Army.

In the name of restoring the gospel hall and reopening the hospital, Gao Jincheng asked Han Gong for the gospel hall that the army used as a hospital for the wounded and sick, and established the gospel hospital in the capacity of the director of the Ganliangsu Anti-Enemy Support Association, and privately received the anti-Japanese wounded and sick for hospitalization and assisted in finding the scattered Red officers and soldiers.

Soon, he got in touch with the temporary party branch established by the Red Army in exile, conveyed to them the concern of the Party Central Committee, the domestic situation after the Xi'an Incident, and the establishment of the Eighth Route Army office in Lanzhou, and asked Han Gong for the return of the Red Army female soldiers Wang Dingguo, Xu Shishu and others under the pretext of lack of nursing personnel, saving their lives.

With the close cooperation of the provisional party branch, Gao Jincheng began the work of rescuing the Red Army. His hospital of 20 beds was often filled with wounded Red Army soldiers. After the wounded recovered, he escorted them batch after batch to the Eighth Route Army office in Lanzhou, and then transferred them to Yan'an.

The mass departure of the Red Army from Zhangye aroused Han Gong's suspicions.

Soon after, one of Han Gong's chiefs told Gao Jincheng that Han had a list of Communist Party members who were ready to be killed, including his name, and advised him to leave Zhangye quickly. ,

Gao Jincheng believed that his task had not yet been completed, so he put his personal safety aside and continued to try to rescue the scattered Red officers and soldiers.

In the early morning of February 3, 1938, Han Gong lied that he had an emergency, sent someone to ask Gao to visit him, and deceived Gao Jincheng to the headquarters of the 100th Division.

Han Gong forced him to admit that he was a member of the Communist Party, demanded that he hand over the list of Communist Party members, and thoroughly explained how many Communist Party members he had let go.

Gao Jincheng was righteous and awe-inspiring, and he loudly praised the Communist Party for loving the country and the people and being a national hero for resisting Japan and saving the country, and denounced the Kuomintang reactionaries as the scum of the nation and Han Gong as a bandit and executioner who was thirsty for killing.

Annoyed and ashamed, Han Gong ordered his men to cut off his limbs.

Gao Jincheng endured severe pain, continued to scold Han Gong and the Kuomintang, and was finally buried alive in the back garden of the Zhangye Yamen.

In September 1941, when President Yu of the Nationalist Supervision Yuan inspected the Hexi Corridor and passed through Zhangye Nanguan, he saw several elderly people kneeling in the center of the street, with a paper on their heads, stopping the president's car to complain, and tearfully accusing Han Gong of his crimes.

When Han Gong heard about this, he was very panicked and tried in vain to bribe Dean Yu to exonerate himself. He gave Dean Yu two ancient clay pots dug up in the ruins of Heishui Country, quietly filled the clay pots with placer gold, and covered the mouth of the jars with a red cloth.

After the dean noticed it, he immediately refused and walked away.

Han Gong was terrified from then on, afraid that he would be investigated for his evil deeds.

Not long after, his official fortune really changed.

At that time, the Nationalist regime had already gained a firm foothold in Gansu. Lao Chiang immediately sent his descendants into the Hexi Corridor and transferred Han Gong's army to Luojiawan in Qinghai.

The phoenix that falls on the shelf is not as good as a chicken. After Han Gong returned to Qinghai, he was immediately stripped of his military power. In order to dissociate himself from him, Ma Fang simply sent him back to Xunhua's hometown to relax.

Although Han Gong was very reluctant in his heart, he looked at the large amount of money he had gathered, and secretly scolded in his heart: "His grandmother's, anyway, Lao Tzu will not suffer." Why not take a break and recuperate? ”

Han Gong remembered the story of the "Three Caves of the Cunning Rabbit". He divided his belongings in two, hid some in Xining City, took some with him, and went home.

Who knows, as soon as Han Gong reached the boundary of Hualong County, he encountered a group of bandits rushing down from the mountains. The bandits ransacked his belongings.

He suspected that Ma Fang was secretly doing evil, but in order to save his life, he had to give up his money and fled back to Xunhua in a hurry.

In June 1948, Han Gong, who was running at the time, was elected as a member of the Supervisory Council of the National Government.

Han Gong, who was in obscurity, felt proud and excited, happily took his aunt and wife, returned to Xining, the provincial capital, took the money he had hidden back then, and built a grand private house compound near the small bridge on the bank of the Huangshui River, and leisurely lived for the rest of his life.
