Section 77 Regular Army
Speaking of military uniforms, the design of military uniforms was personally participated in by Zhou Lang.
The prototype is still based on Western-style military uniforms, and then gradually changed, the choice of tops is a slim and straight design, Zhou Lang feels that the slim clothes look spiritual, and the wide military uniforms of the Qing army, if dirty, look like a beggar's gang. However, I didn't choose so many decorations on Western-style military uniforms, and the buttons were all wooden. The reason why this is so is not that he is reluctant to pay for materials, but that Zhou Lang designed the button as a symbol of rank, and ordinary soldiers can only use wooden buttons, the captain is an iron button, a total copper button, a thousand total silver buttons (copper inlaid with silver), and a staff member will be a gold button (copper inlaid with gold). Concise and clear, before the appearance of the medal and the acceptance of the soldiers, this is the most conspicuous rank mark, if you want to wear a beautiful button, work hard for meritorious promotion!
The straight-leg pants chosen for military pants, there is nothing to say about this, and they can be close and comfortable.
The hardest thing to choose is shoes and hats.
Fischer suggested using leather shoes, and Zhou Lang also favored leather shoes, especially for officers and honor guards with long leather boots. But after trying, Zhou Lang gave up, Taiwan's climate, wearing leather shoes, many soldiers' athlete's foot immediately haired, for the medical conditions of this era, it will affect the combat effectiveness, and the British army during the Opium War was affected by this. Until the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese army was still trapped in a kind of beriberi, which caused edema and serous oozing from the ankles, knees, thighs and whole body of the affected people, and in severe cases, lost the ability to exercise, and even caused heart disease that was life-threatening. In the Navy, beriberi even became the greatest threat to soldiers after scurvy.
So Zhou Lang gave up the adoption of leather shoes, rather than using leather shoes as comfortable as the local people's favorite straw shoes, but the wear resistance of straw shoes is insufficient, and you have to change shoes before a training is over. In the end, a compromise method was adopted, and leather sandals were made with cow leather straps, and the wear-resistant problem was solved, and it was relatively high-grade.
The hat issue is more sensitive, Zhou Lang did not want to fully adopt the tall hats, boat-shaped hats and other hats in the Western army, and planned to adopt a Chinese-style hat, after the Ming Dynasty, the popular square scarf of the literati disappeared, but the melon skin hat was handed down, and the Qing army used the hat-shaped military hat, which did not quite conform to Zhou Lang's requirements. Finally, try it back and forth, using the design of a melon skin hat and a sunshade brim, and then adding a cockade, it immediately has some momentum. Ordinary soldiers also give a copper cockade and press a simple pattern, which is currently a sword-shaped pattern, and consider that after making special merits according to a certain army in the future, they will be replaced with a proprietary cockade to increase their sense of honor, such as tiger head pattern, dragon head pattern and the like.
The colors of the military uniforms are also relatively bright. This is different from the modern army's emphasis on concealment and the use of camouflage camouflage, Fischer said that European armies use eye-catching colors in order to distinguish them from civilians and increase the sense of honor of soldiers, for example, Britain uses red uniforms, so it has the nickname of Red Shirts or Lobster Soldiers. For the sake of the face of the sense of honor, Zhou Lang also chose a conspicuous color, considering the current situation of Taiwan's backward handicraft industry, he chose the most common color, the hat was red, the shirt was blue, the pants were plain (not printed and dyed), and the shoes were black.
The material is made of special fabrics blended with wool and linen with local characteristics, commonly known as wool cloth locally, which is woven by local women with animal hair and ramie (ramie). Because of their acquaintance, the Han people bought them to make flags or make parcels. Zhou Lang chose this fabric, firstly, because it is produced locally, and the source is stable and controllable, and secondly, because the wool and ramie fabrics are relatively straight, unlike cotton cloth, which is easy to collapse after wearing it for a long time, affecting the appearance of the army.
However, the productivity of the Fan people is limited, so Zhou Lang saved up for a long time to save enough cloth to make military uniforms. Moreover, the price of a military uniform is not cheap, on average, it costs ten silver dollars to make a set; However, compared with the price of two hundred taels of silver made by Manchu officials, it is quite kind.
Military uniforms were gradually distributed to the various camps, and at first the soldiers themselves put on their own and looked at each other and laughed, and then the common people watched and laughed along with them. But when the neat military uniform, with the neat pace, the unified weapon, after the start of the drill, whether it is the soldiers or the people do not smile, the sense of discipline brought by the sameness has a kind of solemn momentum.
In addition to the military uniforms, at Fischer's suggestion, the cavalry was also formed. A hundred horses were captured in Donggang, although they were not as tall as European war horses, but they were better than nothing. And once it is proved that the cavalry is effective, Zhou Lang will not hesitate to purchase a batch of war horses from India to come back, I heard that Indian horses are domesticated Arabian horses and bred, which is similar to the strength of European horses.
Grenadier regiments were also formed. A thousand of the strongest veterans were selected from the whole army, and a battalion was formed separately, still led by Ma Dalei.
The artillery was expanded to 1,000 people, equipped with 100 cannons, eliminated the earthen cannons made by the Qing army, and replaced them with the infantry guns that Colin had detained in the left battalion at that time, and every team of ten people was responsible for one cannon. Four guns form an artillery regiment, and four brigades and grenadier battalions are each equipped with a separate artillery regiment; The remaining twenty artillery regiments formed an artillery brigade, which was specially used to overcome difficulties.
The hospital was gradually improved, and a field hospital was formed in the rear by hired professional doctors. None of the regiments set up a special medical squad to be responsible for the emergency treatment of the wounded on the battlefield, and after their emergency treatment, the seriously wounded were sent back to the rear hospital for treatment.
Military schools have been running all along, but because the foundation of the soldiers is too poor and the attitude of most people is not good, the results are not very good at present, at least there are no literate soldiers and officers in batches. But sporadically, soldiers and officers who have been confirmed to be literate by Mr. Teach, soldiers are directly appointed as junior officers, and officers are directly promoted to one rank. Gradually, this encouragement began to reverse the learning ethos in the army. Sure enough, the biggest motivation for hard study is to learn and excel, not to be inferior in everything, but to read high.
Zhou Lang also began to set up a special cooking class, one cooking class per regiment, responsible for cooking, Zhou Lang believed that eating well would help improve combat effectiveness.
Another system was the formal establishment of the name of the army, Zhou Lang named the army the South Route Army in the name of his own generalissimo of the South Road Auxiliary State, and made a banner with the word "South Road" written on it and sent it down, replacing the tradition of the army using the surname of the officer as the banner.
At present, there are a total of four brigades in the Southern Route Army, and the old battalion in the past is now replaced by the newly formed grenadier regiment, but it is not called a grenadier regiment, but a name independent of the four brigades, Shuai Ying, which means Shuai Tent pro-barracks, under the direct command of Zhou Lang.
After this system construction, Zhou Lang was very sure that his army looked more like a regular army than the Qing army.
At the end of May, Wang Fuqian of the Northern Expedition came back from the north, and Xie Qinggao, who went to India, also came back from the sea.
