Chapter 106: The Battle of the Bridgehead (2)
The first thing that came out was the long black barrel of the Vietnamese tank, perhaps because he was worried that the barrel would be damaged by the other tank, so the Vietnamese tanker tilted the turret at an angle, which gave me a rare opportunity to observe the barrel of an enemy tank so closely in battle.
Without rifling, I noticed at first glance the difference between the Vietnamese tank - the inner wall of the barrel of this tank is very smooth, and there is no rifling that our tanks and other tanks should have. I quickly realized that the tank was equipped with a smoothbore gun, which meant that it was a relatively advanced tank.
It should be said that rifled guns are more complex and advanced than smoothbore guns, and the shells fired by rifled guns will rotate at high speed due to rifling, thus increasing the 'precision' accuracy of their hitting targets. Moreover, it is also a very complicated process to make rifling in the breech, and it is for this reason that most of the early tank guns were rifled guns. For example, during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, most tanks directly mounted rifled high-firing guns on the tanks.
However, as tanks became more widely used on the battlefield, military strategists gradually realized that tanks were still used to deal with enemy tanks at close range most of the time. Therefore, the most important thing for tank guns is not the 'shooting' and 'precision', but the armor-piercing ability.
And so the difference comes out......
Although the rifled artillery shell has a high degree of 'shooting' accuracy, the shell will consume a considerable part of the kinetic energy when rotating at high speed, and the projectile will also disperse the metal 'shot' flow due to rotation when it invades the enemy's tank armor, which makes its armor-piercing effect not good.
On the other hand, although the smoothbore gun has a relatively poor accuracy of shooting, it releases almost all the kinetic energy on the armor of the enemy's tank, and the armor-piercing effect is much better than that of the rifled gun.
It is precisely for this reason that the United States and the Soviet Union, which are at the forefront of science and technology, have equipped smoothbore guns on tanks to improve their armor-piercing effect. So as soon as I saw that the tank in front of me was equipped with a smoothbore gun, I knew that this guy was a "fashionable" thing in this era.
So I thought, for a guy like this, a 59mm rifled gun in 100mm will not necessarily be able to penetrate the armor-piercing of his turret from the front.
Thinking of this, I immediately beckoned to several bazooka 'shooters', and soon four fighters with two bazookas on their backs ran up and prepared to 'shoot' the attack.
Facts have also proved that my worries are justified, and this tank is a Soviet-style T62 tank, which can almost be said to be the most advanced tank currently equipped by the Vietnamese army. The armor on the front of the turret is 220mm thick and curved, which not only makes it more difficult for enemy shells to penetrate, but also has a certain bounce effect on shells.
And at this time...... However, because Commander Wu's tank was too close to the enemy's tank, the barrel was aimed straight at the frontal turret of the Vietnamese tank, which was the thickest part of the enemy's tank armor.
Hearing only a "boom", Battalion Commander Wu's tank fired, but this shell only made the Vietnamese tank's tank violently 'swing', and then the T62 still drove forward with its own care in the surprised eyes of the soldiers.
Seeing that this tank was about to leave the bridgehead, more and more enemies were pouring into the bridgehead under the cover of this tank, and they were about to break through our lines like a flood of bursting banks...... Two rockets whizzed towards the big guy in front of the Vietnamese army......
There were two loud "booms", and after the tank continued to advance for a few meters in the smoke of gunpowder, it was unable to move because the covering belt was broken, and the Vietnamese army's advance was once again blocked by us within the bridgehead.
However, the Vietnamese army did not seem to give up, and sent a few people to try to charge through the gap in the tank, but this effort was obviously meaningless, and those Vietnamese troops were all knocked to the ground by our machine guns without exception. It didn't take long for the Vietnamese army to retreat down the bridge like a 'tidal' with the rest of the tanks and troops under the cover of a T34.
Zhu Jixing even took the opportunity to call for artillery support in the rear, only to see a burst of artillery fire covering the past, only to hit those Vietnamese troops flying into the air in pieces, occasionally some tanks happened to be directly hit by shells and were immediately blown upside down, and the rest were also a 'mess' and just looking around for a place to avoid shells.
"Brother Artillery, well fought!"
"Well played!"
……
Seeing that the Vietnamese soldiers were blown up by our artillery fire, the soldiers cheered for the artillery one after another.
Battalion Commander Wu opened the hatch and jumped down from the tank with a snort, looked at the tank that was broken and couldn't move, and said with palpitations: "Good guy! At such a close distance, I shot at its head and didn't move......"
Where would the fighters pay attention to what kind of tank it was, climbed up a few people and knocked the butt of the tank on the canopy a few times, and shouted loudly:
"Noku Matsu page!"
"Riarei (come out)!"
……
The soldiers knocked and beat for a while but there was no movement, originally I thought that the Vietnamese troops inside were either stunned by the shock or died and did not surrender, and I was trying to let the soldiers go away and blow up the tank. But at this moment, a crack was opened with a "clang" of the tank hatch, and a weak voice came from inside: "Comrade of the People's Liberation Army! Surrender the gun and don't kill, surrender the gun and don't kill ......"
Hey! Or a person who can speak Chinese. His voice trembled as he spoke, and it seemed that the man hiding in the tank was far less powerful than the tank seemed to be.
The soldiers lifted the hatch of the tank, pulled the Vietnamese soldier out of it, and asked, "What about the others?" Dead or alive? ”
"I ...... I don't know! The Vietnamese soldier wearing a tank cap replied in shock: "There are three more, and I am the only one who crawled out......
This is completely reasonable, the system of the Vietnamese army is like this, if someone wants to join the enemy, other Vietnamese soldiers can kill them on the spot. I believe that there are many Vietnamese troops who want to surrender when they are at a disadvantage on the battlefield, but they are worried that they will not be able to go to the camp of our army at all. So I think if he wasn't the only one who was still conscious, I was afraid that he wouldn't be able to get out.
I was about to send someone in to see if there was any information that could be used, but the Vietnamese army would not give us such a chance, and with the whistling of cannonballs in the sky, the Vietnamese army began to clear the field as usual.
A few minutes later, we looked up at the two broken tanks that had just been in the bridgehead, and we didn't know when they had turned into a pile of scrap metal and rolled under the bridge.
This may also be the purpose of this artillery bombardment by the Vietnamese army - to clear the way for their next offensive. Otherwise, I'm afraid that they will be busy for a while to clean up these two tanks.
After the smoke of the shelling had passed, I raised my binoculars again and looked across the river, but the Vietnamese army did not attack again, and the tanks were nowhere to be seen. On the other side of the river, there were only a few wreckage of tanks that had been blown up and caught fire, spewing flames and black smoke in the north wind, and there were only a dozen Vietnamese 'female' soldiers carrying the wounded and corpses on their waists......
"The more devils are scared of us!" Li Zhifu said with some pride: "Look...... Only the 'female' soldiers dare to come out! The more devils are less daring than 'female' people! ”
"Is that not it?" Al Ziri didn't know where to get out, and echoed beside him: "We will kill so many tanks after only charging once, and if we continue to fight, the little belongings of the more devils will soon be lost!" ”
"The more devil's belongings, you still need to worry about them!" The rest of the warriors couldn't help but laugh and curse.
Looking at the appearance of the soldiers, I knew that the victory just now made the soldiers much more optimistic, after all, the soldiers also knew that with the advantages of our army's Type 69 rocket launchers and bridgeheads, they could completely stop the Vietnamese army on the other side of the Qiqiao River. Moreover, our artillery has been pressing the artillery of the Vietnamese army, and even if the Vietnamese devils are 'artillery', they are only in a hurry for a few minutes, and the feeling of this kind of artillery fire being in full superiority is indeed very good.
But I knew that the Vietnamese army was not scared as the soldiers said, and I looked up at the darkening sky and realized that the Vietnamese army was waiting for it to get dark......
So I immediately ordered the soldiers: "Immediately strengthen the fortifications, the Vietnamese army is likely to attack at night!" ”
"Yes!" After listening to my order, the soldiers quickly understood the intentions of the Vietnamese army, so they did not dare to slack off, and immediately waved their shovels at the position that had been 'chaotic' by the Vietnamese army's artillery fire.
"Zhu Jixing!" I yelled into the intercom.
"Here!" Zhu Jixing answered from afar, and ran quickly in front of me with a telescope covered in dust in his hand.
"Do you see the bridgehead on the other side?" I pointed to the other side of the river and said, "Contact the artillerymen, let them free up ten 'guns' to align the Zhuyuan at the bridgehead, and complete the test 'firing' before dark, and once ordered to block the bridgehead." Do you understand? ”
"Understood!" Zhu Jixing answered, and hurriedly returned to the walkie-talkie to contact the artillery unit.
"Battalion commander!" At this time, the correspondent handed over the walkie-talkie and said: "The regiment headquarters phone, saying that there is a new situation!" ”
"I'm Cui Wei!" I grabbed the microphone and identified myself.
"Camp Commander Cui!" The slightly anxious voice of the chief of staff came from the microphone: "There is a new change in the situation, our army's frontal offensive in the northern district of Lang Son is not going well, and it is difficult to meet your troops before dark." There are indications that it is very likely that the Vietnamese army will take advantage of the darkness to 'draw' troops and turn back and attack the bridge on the Chi Khao River in a vain attempt to open up the passage for their southward retreat......"
"What?" Listening to me, I couldn't help but be stunned, isn't this telling us that we have been surrounded by Yue devils? And it was surrounded by Yue devils in the dark night......
"So!" After a pause, the chief of staff continued: "In order to prevent the Vietnamese army from escaping, you must be prepared to blow up the bridge. Once it is difficult to defend the bridge, blow up the bridge and cut off the retreat of the Vietnamese army! ”
"Yes!" I answered numbly.
But in his heart, he was scolding: it! This guy didn't say a word, if we can't hold it, what will we do with our team of four or five hundred people!
