A strong man must be a man of moderation, and if he cannot resist the temptation in life, how can he meet death on the battlefield? On the contrary, the common people are often unrestrained and have a limited imagination, and they are accustomed to imagining all the nobles as if they were as dissolute as themselves.
The purpose of the Chu state not practicing the Zhou rites was to remove the redundancy in the Zhou rites so that the Chu people could return to the right path. In that case, why not start with yourself? If he is not as good as Confucius, who he has always looked down on, how can he bring the Chu people back to the right path?
