Section 2: Temporary Events
Even a village has a lord, but unlike the big lords with strong castles, the houses of the lesser lords are generally simple, with stone pedestals, walls made of wood and plaster, a thick thatched roof, and then a few large stones to hold down the roof thatch to prevent the thatch from being blown away when the wind rises.
"This house is much better than my earliest dorms." Bruce followed Todd past the village, and the people in the village looked at the well-dressed Bruce with a nonchalant expression, Bruce knew that they now regarded him as an outsider, a new lord from a noble manor, but Bruce was not worried about this.
In fact, Bruce was disappointed when he stood in front of his house, the east annex of the house had collapsed, and there was only one main house and the lord's bedroom, the windows were not cleaned by the servants and were covered with cobwebs, and the grass used to keep out moisture in them was wet and moldy, which filled the whole house with a musty smell.
"I'm sorry lord, this was originally the country house of your family's previous generation of Lord Locke, but your father never liked it, so he didn't clean it, but don't worry, the sun here is still abundant."
Sheriff Todd said to Bruce with a smile.
"You can get a few people to clean this house." Bruce said to Todd.
"I'm sorry lord, it's going to take a little bit of time, uh, I need to find someone who is willing to clean up." Todd took his hat and said respectfully to Bruce.
"Then go ahead!" Bruce frowned and said to Todd.
"Yes, I'll go." Todd asked his men to put their suitcases in the house and left with his men.
"Why didn't he stay and help us?" Little Lori Anne looked at the backs of Todd and the others in surprise, puzzled by their behavior of leaving their lords behind.
"Ha, it looks like someone gave me eye medicine." Bruce smiled, he had worked at the grassroots level for many years, and he knew the politics of the office.
"What about the house?" Little Lori Anne looked up and asked Bruce.
"We'll do it ourselves." Bruce shrugged his shoulders, he took off his cardigan jacket, rolled up his sleeves and picked up a worn-out broom that had fallen outside the house, and he was ready to clean the old house himself.
Bruce swept the moldy hay out with a broom, then swept the cobwebs from the wooden windows, and little Lori Anne laboriously pumped the water from the well outside the house into the wooden basin, and then wiped the dust with a dirty linen cloth that had accumulated for decades, and it took Anne all the strength to wipe a corner of the house clean.
In the grove outside the lord's house, there was a pair of eyes on them, one of Sheriff Todd's men, who left the woods as he watched Bruce and Anne go about their way in and out of the house as the sun began to sink in the west.
"Goo-goo." There was a rumbling sound of his stomach growling, and Bruce stopped what he was talking about and looked over, only to see Anne, who looked like a little flower cat, looking at him embarrassedly.
"Hungry? I remember there was also a bit of jerky and salted fish in the suitcase. Bruce wiped the sweat from his head, he looked up and looked around, after a busy day, the lord's house finally looked a little shaped.
The structure of the house is L-shaped, and when you open the oak door, you will see the main living room, and to the east there is a cold stone fireplace, on which hangs a rusty iron sword, strangely not missing, a few creaking old chairs, and to the west is the location of the dining room, where a long wooden table is placed, and if there is a cook, you can use it for baking.
"The jerky is so hard!" Anne took out the jerky from her suitcase, but it was harder than stone.
"Don't worry, let my husband be on fire." As the sky grew darker, Bruce knew that the night without electricity was very dark, so he took the flint and steel from his suitcase, lit the cold fireplace, and the crackling wood made the room much warmer.
Bruce picked up the tongs pot in the corner of the west wall, filled it with some water, put the jerky in and boiled it, and soon a pot of fragrant broth was ready, and the two of them, who had been hungry all day, sat down by the fireplace and ate the broth.
"What are you doing?" Bruce saw Anne using her own hands to ignore the heat and scoop up the meat from the pan.
"Eat?" Anne wondered, isn't this how everyone eats?
"Smack." Bruce remembered that the people of this world were still in the Middle Ages, and the nobles would use iron forks or iron spoons for meals, while the poor would use wooden spoons and wooden forks, but more often by hand, Bruce looked around, found two wooden branches, cut off the branches and leaves to make simple chopsticks, and fished out the meat for her in Annie's surprised gaze.
"Whew~~~." The howl of a wild wolf was heard in the distance, and Anne glanced at the door in fear, the beasts of this era were not all afraid of people.
"Sleep in peace after eating, I will protect you." Bruce warmed up after drinking some broth, and he stood up and removed the iron sword that hung above the fireplace, then sat down in his chair and rested the sword on his lap.
Anne nodded obediently, she took a worn wool blanket from the trunk and spread it by the fireplace, curled up on the wool blanket, and the master and servant quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, Bruce was awakened by a burst of dazzling sunlight, and he looked around before realizing that he had traveled to another world.
"Master Bruce is not good." Just as Bruce yawned and thought about whether he should get some sleep, he was disturbed by the voice of little Lorianne.
"Dangchang." The sword in Bruce's hand fell to the ground, and he rubbed his legs, which had not been straightened all night, and were numb.
"What's wrong?" Bruce asked curiously when he saw little Lori Anne's panicked look.
"It's the villagers, and they're coming at us with weapons." Anne said in a panic that she had seen a serf rebellion, it was a famous serf rebellion led by the Brotherhood without Banners, those serfs with pitchforks and donkeys, led by the Brotherhood without Banners, passed through Locke Manor to attack the county castle, fortunately the rebellion was quickly suppressed by the Earl, but the horrific scene at that time terrified all the nobles.
"Riot? No, you can't! Bruce was a little puzzled, he picked up the iron sword on the ground, and wondered in his heart, he had just become the leader of this village, and there was no reason to be hated by the villagers as soon as he came, as the saying goes, there are still three fires when the new official takes office, and his own fire has not been lit yet.
"Oh oh oh~~." Annie's words weren't false, for Bruce heard a noise outside his house.
"What to do? Should we hide in our houses, or at least these strong walls to keep these thugs from entering? Anne said tremblingly.
"It's weird." Bruce was not afraid, he was very experienced in this kind of mass practice, so he went to the window and took a closer look, only to see the ragged villagers approaching his house noisily, but they did have pitchforks and rakes in their hands.
"It looks rushed, there is no organizer, it should be a temporary emergency." Bruce observed it and immediately qualitated the incident, if it was a nobleman without any experience, it would have been a very terrible riot, but for a village official like Bruce, it was just the simplest temporary event in mass practice.
"Master Bruce, I'll sneak out the back door." Anne said breathlessly.
"Go there?" Bruce asked curiously.
"Sheriff Todd, of course! He must send someone to protect us. Anne said with a pale face.
"Don't be stupid, if I'm not mistaken, these people should have been instigated by him." Bruce smiled and reached out to pat his little maid's face and explained to her.
"What? This, how is this possible? Anne fanned her long eyelashes, her blue eyes widening as she looked at Bruce.
