Chapter XXXVII. Income

By 1909, the total population of Bulgaria had increased to 22,186,400, an increase of 1,798,900 compared to 20,387,500 in 1907, of which the natural increase in population was 1,182,600.

However, as the situation in Russia stabilized, the number of immigrants had dropped significantly by 1908.

By 1909, most of the immigrants from Russia were wives who had returned home to visit relatives, and family relocation was rare.

After all, when the situation is stable, few people are willing to leave their homes. And this is also related to the traditional culture of Europeans, basically the eldest son inherits the family business, and the second son goes out to beg for a living.

Going out is equivalent to standing on your own, and your parents will not take the whole family to take refuge unless you have to!

However, Ferdinand was also satisfied, and it was almost enough at this rate, after all, immigrants also need time to integrate, and it is too much to increase at one time, which is also a problem for resettlement.

Under normal circumstances, after the introduction of the Family Planning Law, Bulgaria will inevitably experience an explosive period of population growth in the next few years, and Ferdinand has no doubt about this, which is also related to the demographic structure of Bulgaria.

Since Ferdinand succeeded to the throne, he has been implementing the national policy of encouraging childbirth for a long time, although the previous strength was not as great as it is now, but the effect is still obvious!

Comparing the historical data of the previous life, it will be found that since Ferdinand succeeded to the throne, the birth rate of Bulgaria has increased by 0.1%~0.9% compared with the same period in history, which is basically similar to that of Russia in the same period, and the population birth rate has remained between 4.26% ~ 5.32%, which is already very good!

Newborns born before 1892, which happened to be affected by his population policy, are now in the appropriate reproductive years, and this situation will continue for many years to come.

In addition, most of the immigrants imported from Russia are mainly young and strong, and for a long time in the future, Bulgarian society will be mainly young.

The larger the number of childbearing age groups, the more obvious the demographic stimulus policy will be, and the birth rate will definitely skyrocket in the future, and may even set a world record!

In fact, there are not a few women in Eastern Europe who have five or six children per mother, but due to the medical conditions and the standard of living hygiene, there are not many who can support them!

Bulgaria is already doing very well in this regard, and the survival rate of newborn babies remains at about 95%, which is much higher than the 84% of the Kingdom of Montenegro! (Note: This survival rate is only one year without premature death, and in fact, it may be less than two-thirds of those who can actually grow into adults)

Oh, and Ferdinand also banned the sale of all contraceptives throughout the country, and even condoms were banned from the market unless it was a special place.

As for abortion, probably no doctor in Bulgaria dares to do it now, and according to the new law, the baby in the womb of a pregnant woman is also alive, and abortion is a crime of intentional homicide.

If an abortion is necessary under special circumstances, it must also be reported to the government department. Otherwise, they will be charged with intentional homicide by the police, and under normal circumstances, no one dares to defy the law!

Well, in order to increase the population, Ferdinand can be regarded as racking his brains, and even then, the total population of Bulgaria is still far from the total population of the great powers!

The total population of Bulgaria compared to that of the great powers of the same period:

Equivalent to two-thirds of the total population of Italy;

Equivalent to 56 percent of the total population of France;

Equivalent to half of the entire population of the United Kingdom;

equivalent to forty-five percent of the total population of the Austro-Hungarian Empire;

Equivalent to 43% of Japan's total population;

That's one third of Germany's population;

equivalent to a quarter of the entire population of the United States;

This is equivalent to 14 percent of the total population of Russia. (Excluding population losses due to the butterfly effect)

In general, Bulgaria still has a long way to go in terms of population. Theoretically, at the current rate of population growth in Bulgaria, by the time the world war broke out, the total population could reach about 27 million.

In fact, for various reasons, the population growth rate may be faster, but if you want to break through 30 million, it is undoubtedly a fool's dream!

Oh, and if you add in the colony population, that number would have been easily enough, and apparently Ferdinand wouldn't have done that!

Compared to the population, Bulgaria's other data are barely acceptable. The processing and manufacturing industry has surpassed Italy, the total mileage of the country's railways is now on par with Italy, and the output of heavy industries such as steel and coal far exceeds that of Italy.

To put it simply, in addition to population, Bulgaria has now caught up with the Italians, the weakest power in Europe, in other areas, and the comprehensive national strength is the same as that of the Italians!

Of course, there is also a Japan at the bottom, but this is not comparable! Due to the distance, and the white supremacy that was prevalent in Europe at the time, it could cost Japan two or three times as much to poach a talent in Europe as it did in Bulgaria!

Even so, it is difficult to dig up people, and it is also urgent, the Japanese actually dug up the corners of the Manchu Qing Dynasty directly, regardless of whether the technology is backward or not, or insist on moving forward on the road of industrialization!

Oh, ignore them for now! Japan before World War I could not be called an industrial country, although it was also one of the great powers!

……

In terms of revenue, Bulgaria's total fiscal revenue in 1909 was about 2.36 billion leva (about 94.4 million pounds), which still maintained a high growth rate.

In 1909, Bulgaria's gross national income reached 18.25 billion leva (about 730 million pounds), and the per capita annual income was 822 leva (about 32.8 pounds). Statistically, Bulgaria's fiscal revenue accounts for 12.9% of its gross national income, which is second only to Japan among other powers.

This is not to say that Bulgaria's taxes are high and the exploitation of the population is great!

On the contrary, in order to encourage economic development, Bulgaria has adopted a low tax policy for many industries, and there are even direct tax exemptions in the field of heavy industry!

In fact, in any country that practices nationalism, the government's fiscal revenue is relatively high, because the government directly controls more industries, and naturally the fiscal revenue is higher!

For example, railways in Bulgaria are all state-owned, while railways in Europe and the United States are mostly private. Obviously, the part of the profits from the operation of the Bulgarian railways is collected into the government's revenues, while the European and American countries only take the tax part!

The same high fiscal revenue, the same high expenditure, for example, to build a railway, you need government financial allocation, so Bulgaria is still not rich in finances!

If it weren't for so much spending, more than 90 million pounds a year, Ferdinand would have joined the naval arms race!

Don't look at Bulgaria's fiscal revenue of more than 90 million pounds in 1909, in fact, due to the war, the government's fiscal deficit is still as high as more than 8 million pounds, and the war reparations can almost smooth out the deficit!

The main thing is the debt of the Greeks, that can only be a debt, don't expect anyone to dare to give them a loan!

Now the Greek government is trying to fight for repayment, and if it weren't for international influence, Ferdinand would be ready to let the Greek government learn from Japan about the experience of repaying loans!

However, considering the sequelae, Ferdinand decided not to interfere, and it was better for the Greeks to understand it themselves, otherwise the pot would not be able to shake off.

Oh, the most important thing is that the Greeks are not as resilient as the Japanese, and if they are in a hurry, they will rebel, plus their population is not large, so they can't squeeze much oil!

In this regard, Ferdinand actually still has a conscience, perhaps due to the influence of his previous life, and basically rarely does things to the end, otherwise the Greek peninsula is definitely hell on earth now!

According to the and urine of the European powers in this era, there is nothing they can't do!

Specifically, we can refer to the atrocities committed by the British against the Boers in South Africa, which took place against the backdrop of condemnation by public opinion throughout Europe!

Ferdinand estimated that if there was no pressure from European public opinion, another genocide, John Bull would have done a good job!
