1167. A magnificent siege and annihilation
On March 23, the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941), the 51st Division of the 74th Army of the Chinese Army fought to the death with the 20th Brigade of the Japanese Army at the junction of Gao'an and Shanggao, on the south bank of the Jinjiang River in Huibu.
A brigade of the 20th Brigade of the Japanese Army in Nandu could not capture Huayang, so they turned to Kuangjia with the main force and joined the Japanese troops in Baichetou Nandu to rush to Xiongfang along the river, intending to detour to the left flank of the 51st Division.
The 51st Regiment of the 151st Division sent a battalion to the left and engaged the enemy in a T-shaped encounter. The enemy reinforced, counterattacked, and attacked the southern end of Xiongfang with a piece, the Chinese army resisted desperately, and the enemy did not succeed.
In the case that the Japanese army could not attack for a long time, the 51st Division launched a preemptive attack and began to exert force in the rear to recover Xiongfang at midnight, and at the same time, Stone Street was also conquered by the 51st Division.
In 1941, one of the most exciting and fierce battles, the Battle of Shanggao, will undergo a watershed-like change at this moment, and the Chinese army, which is constantly on passive defense, will enter an active counterattack and encirclement.
The Japanese army, which had not been able to attack for a long time, independently mixed into the 20th Brigade, is now not only tired after a long battle, but also has become the end of the crossbow, and has fallen into the dilemma of being in the middle of the water.
In addition, the Chinese army on the periphery had begun to approach with force, and on the 23rd, the 49th Army of the Northeast Army and the 70th Army of the Hunan Army were killed separately, entering Guanqiao Street and Yanggongwei, and approaching Gray Port and Gaoyao.
When the 49th Army of the Northeast Army approached Gray Port, the 20th Brigade of the Japanese Army began to panic, and Gray Port was an important distribution center for the supply of Japanese materials, a land and water wharf.
Once the Gray Port was recaptured by the Chinese army, the 20th Brigade would be besieged in this small area and could only be replenished by airdrop.
In order to avoid this situation, the 20th Brigade of the Japanese Army began to withdraw its troops to the north bank of the Jinjiang River and get close to the 34th Division while dividing its troops to the east of Gray Port to block the advance of the 49th Army.
The Japanese army wants to withdraw, the three dogs salivate, like a tail chasing to kill the devil, but they don't dare, no order is one of them, the key is that their three battalions are so many people now, and they still want to chase and kill the Japanese army.
The withdrawal of the Japanese army was mainly to Sixi on the north bank of the Jinjiang River and join the 34th Division.
Even if it is the main force of the 51st Division, that is, it follows closely behind, keeps a certain distance, and does not dare to cross the river to the north to chase after it to the bank of the Jinjiang River, let alone such a small number of people as Sangou.
The losses of the 9th Company of the 3rd Battalion were relatively large, with almost one-third of the soldiers suffering casualties, followed by the 8th Company, and the 7th Company was relatively better, but there were also more than 10 or 20 casualties.
At present, the big battle has not yet ended, and there is no timely replenishment, so we can only replenish food, ammunition and weapons first, and with the help of the villagers in Shanggao and Gao'an, the logistical pressure on the Chinese army is much less.
Now the 26th and 51st Divisions of the 49th Army are meeting near Gray Port, and the 26th Division of the 49th Army is ordered to stay on the front line of Gray Port and New Territories Port, stick to the southeast position of Shanggao, and protect the safety of Shanggao's flank.
The 51st Division once again acted as a tinker and demanded that it be quickly rushed to the last gateway of Shanggao, the Mirror Mountain Pass, to guard.
Under the transportation of the automobile brigade, the 51st Division, under the guidance of local villagers, in the dark night, followed the south bank of the Geumjin River to the foot of the Shanggao South Tower, where it crossed the Geumjiang River and reached Jingshan Mountain.
In the second half of the night of 23 March, the 152nd Regiment of the vanguard of the 51st Division had arrived at Jingshan and quickly entered the already dug defense fortifications.
Jingshan is located in the northwest to southeast of the east of Shanggao County, about a dozen miles of road, southeast and Jinjiang River, just arching the east of Shanggao.
There is a canyon in the middle of several of these peaks, called the Mirror Pass, and the main road in the middle is the only way from Gao'an to Kamigao.
The terrain of Mirror Mountain is not very high, but in the plains, it is a good defensive point. The surrounding terrain is low, and this is the only place where there are so many geographical advantages.
Therefore, as early as a few years ago, the army stationed here took advantage of this terrain to build a complete set of defense fortifications, and dug a circular communication trench on the mountain.
Foxholes, machine gun nests, and bunkers were dug in the communication trenches, and this time because the battle was imminent, several lines of defense were added, and even the tunnels for air defense and anti-artillery were dug out, which made Sangou look very relieved.
With such fortifications, coupled with tens of thousands of villagers in Shanggao County, it is much better than Zhang Gushan in Wanjialing, and it is also the bottom of the encirclement.
The 3rd Battalion quickly followed the 152nd Regiment to take over the hill in the middle of Jingshan and hold the most critical Jingshan Pass.
After entering the position, the replenishment of weapons and ammunition was accelerated, and ordinary fighters first hid in pits and bunkers to sleep, leaving several observation posts at the front of the position.
Although the soldiers slept in the car, they were tired from fighting for days and days recently, and such a little sleep was far from enough.
In fact, the sound of gunfire from the direction of Sixi can already be heard on the position, and the Japanese 34th Division is attacking day and night, trying to penetrate the last layer of the Chinese army's position and go straight up and down.
At present, the 58th Division of the 74th Army is guarding the last position on the west side of the Sixi River, and the Japanese army thought that they would succeed by defeating them, and they stubbornly stalked the 58th Division viciously.
The 58th Division, under the leadership of Deputy Division Commander Zhang Lingwu, fought bloodily from the east bank of the Sixi River to the west bank, and every inch of land and blood was lost, and the Japanese 34th Division had to pay a huge price for every step forward.
Today, due to the independent mixing of the Japanese troops on the south bank of the Jinjiang River, the 20th Brigade has all joined the Middle Route Army, that is, it has joined forces with the 34th Division.
More than 20,000 Japanese troops, almost one and a half divisions, launched a fierce attack on the position of the 58th Division in Sixi, and no matter how heroic the 58th Division was, it could not resist it, and gradually retreated, retreating all the way to the Xiapi Bridge under Jingshan Mountain, and joined the 51st Division.
Another division of the 74th Army, the 57th Division, also approached Jingshan from Guanqiao at this time, and came to Baimao Mountain at the northern foot of Jingshan from the north road.
At this point in the battle, the Strategic Attack Army, that is, the 74th Army, the ace army in the hands of the Luo headquarters, was finally merged, and the three divisions were guarding the last line of defense in Shanggao, on the line of Jingshan.
Whether it can hold Shanggao depends on the 74th Army, whether it can surround the 34th Division and the 20th Brigade of the Japanese Army, and whether the 74th Army can withstand the attack of the Japanese army.
As long as they carried it, the Chinese army, the 49th, 70th, and 72nd armies, and more than a dozen divisions, which were slowly surrounded on all sides, could encircle the flank and rear of the Japanese army.
The 49th Army was on the South Road, in the area of Gray Port on the south bank of the Jinjiang River, compressed into the upper Gaosi River, and the 72nd Army was on the North Road, leaving Shangfu in the new west of Fengxin to go south, and went up to Gaowei.
The three divisions of the 70th Army marched south from Fengxin to Gao'an, and went north with the Jiangxi security column south of Gao'an, flanking Gao'an and cutting off the rear road of the Japanese army.
A magnificent encirclement and annihilation battle was about to begin, and the Japanese reconnaissance planes also saw the danger and constantly alerted the commander of the 34th Division, Lieutenant General Ogashige.
However, Oga Shigeru did not think so, thinking that he had a half-division of troops in his hand, galloping on the plains, and was basically not afraid of any Chinese army's encirclement and interception.
What's more, there is still the 33rd Division in Nanchang as a reserve, and the two and a half divisions are indeed Chinese troops that can sweep everything on the plain.
