Section 154: Allegiance
Bruce had no interest in what was happening outside of Bemessey's Castle, and after annexing Jeffrey's lands, Glynton went from a small village to a big Glinton, but he had twice as many things to deal with as before.
Bruce stood in the tower, and he looked out of the window at the path below the castle, and a group of nobles on horseback left with their flags waving.
"The nobles have returned to their domains." Sir Wayne walked over to Bruce, and he looked out the window at the nobles who were leaving, and said to Bruce.
"Yes, Sir Wayne, according to your observations, are there any of these people who are more capable?" Bruce asked Sir Wayne.
"These nobles are mediocre in ability, but in fact they are normal." Sir Wayne said disdainfully.
"Oh, why?" Bruce thought it was strange that the aristocracy was the elite class that occupied the upper echelons of this era, and although there were occasional good people among the commoners, it should not be forgotten that people who worked in the fields all day were not on the same level as those who had access to the top resources of society.
"It's not Jeffrey's reputation yet, whoever wants to work for the kin-loving is only these nobles who want to gain benefits will turn to him, but the two nobles you caught are good talents." Sir Wayne explains to Bruce that nobles value their reputation, not just for face, but also for deep interests, and that nobles with a good reputation can often attract many capable people to follow, and conversely, lords with a bad reputation will keep people away.
"Ah, I remember them." Bruce, reminded of Sir Wayne's reminder, remembered the two young nobles.
Phoebe sat bored in the barn, leaning against the wooden pillar and looking up at the top of the warehouse, the sun shining through the cracks in the planks, and a kingfisher flapping its wings and landing on the wooden lintel, chirping non-stop below.
"This bird is good." A voice came from across from Phoebe, and Ken was seen sitting up from the haystack, and when the battle was over, he was escorted to Glinton.
"Well, I also have a similar bird in the lord's castle." Phoebe smiled and said to Ken.
"It turns out that the nobles in the castle play with these things all day long, no wonder they will be defeated." Ken said disdainfully, Phoebe belonged to Lord Jeffrey's close vassals, and Ken was from the local nobles, and the two sides looked at each other at the same time.
"What do we have to argue about in such a situation?" Phoebe smiled bitterly, he hadn't taken a shower in many days, and his whole body was itching uncomfortably.
Ken sighed, and suddenly fell into despair, his hard work did not hurt Bruce in the slightest, but he became a prisoner of the other party, and in this hay-filled warehouse, there were only birds and rats as company, but the good thing was that the Glyntons did not treat them badly in terms of food, and there was no torture.
"Crunch." Suddenly, the wooden door of the warehouse was opened, and two soldiers entered, and Phoebe and Ken looked at them, and when they were captured, they had sworn in the honor of nobility that they would never flee, so the soldiers were not afraid that they would escape.
"Phoebe-sama, Ken-sama, please come with us!" Greenton's soldiers said to them.
"Where to go?" Ken jumped down from the haystack and asked the soldier curiously.
"To the castle, of course." The soldier said to them.
"Castle? Whose castle? Phoebe opened his mouth, and an ominous premonition came over him, but he couldn't help but ask.
"Of course it's the Baron, oh yes, the castle's former owner was Jeffrey's Kinkin." A teasing smile appeared on the Soldier's lips as he said to Phoebe and Ken.
The castle towers majestically over the hills, as if nothing has changed, but Phoebe has mixed feelings when she looks at the castle, he has received the news from the soldiers that Jeffrey fell to his death, and Bruce has annexed Jeffrey's land to create the Great Greenton.
"Why does he want to see us?" Ken approached Phoebe, lowered his voice and asked curiously.
"I don't know." Phoebe shook his head, his heart was in turmoil, the death of the Lord had deprived him of his allegiance, and he even hated why he hadn't died by Jeffrey's side.
"But no matter what, I fought for Jeffrey to the end, and I live up to my reputation." Ken shook his head, and he said loudly.
Bruce sat on the throne of the lord, he looked at the two nobles in front of him, one of them was commanding the army to fight against him instead of Jeffrey, and the other led the cavalry to charge his own army, shouting to take off his head, can they be trusted? Anyone facing these two men will have doubts.
"Lord Baron." The two young nobles gave Bruce a bow, and although they were prisoners, they behaved neither humbly nor arrogantly.
"Two lords, I believe you have also heard the news of Lord Jeffrey's death, although we also regret the death of the lord, but what are your plans as vassals?" Bruce's left hand side stood Sir Wayne, who asked as he stood with his head held high and his hand resting on the hilt of his sword at his waist.
"What about the other nobles? Are they all dead? Phoebe looked left and right, and saw that there was no one else in the empty hall of lords, except for Bruce and Sir Wayne, and a few guards.
"Jeffrey's vassal nobles have sworn allegiance to me, and I have sworn to guarantee their land and lives, they are already the local nobles of Great Greenton, my vassals." Bruce sat on the throne and spoke to the two of them.
"These cowards, these traitors." Ken stomped his foot angrily and cursed, despised by the betrayal of the nobles.
"You are wrong, Lord Ken, Lord Jeffrey is dead, the nobles have fulfilled their vassals, a new oath has been made, and I suggest that you do the same, and pledge your allegiance to the Baron, so that your family will save a ransom, and the Baron will be pleased to receive two valiant courtiers." Sir Wayne persuaded the two.
"I'd rather pay the ransom, what do you think the oath of the nobility is, the stone that can be discarded at any time?" Ken crossed his waist disdainfully and said with his head held high.
"Hmm." Sir Wayne frowned, he didn't expect this nobleman Ken to be a conservative aristocrat.
"I am willing to present my sword to Lord Baron and swear allegiance to Lord Baron." But Phoebe, who was on the side, stepped forward, knelt down on one knee to Bruce, and swore allegiance to Bruce on the throne.
"Oh." Phoebe's allegiance came as a surprise to Bruce and Sir Wayne, who had expected Jeffrey's close retainer to immediately refuse.
"Ah, you villain, I already knew." Gritting his teeth in anger, he spat at Phoebe.
"I, Bruce, Baron of Locke, Lord of Locke Manor and Grand Grington, accept your allegiance." Bruce stood up and said to Phoebe, who was kneeling on one knee in front of him.
