Section 140: New Weapons
When the wooden tower was built, Byron Jr. and Sir Wallace only thought that the wooden tower could easily collapse, but they did not expect that Stukov led the soldiers to keep filling it with a gray earth, which was simply beyond the experience of the two nobles.
"What the hell is this doing?" Sir Wallace uncovered his helmet, scratched his scalp with his hand, and asked in confusion.
"It should be filled with earth to make the tower more stable." Byron the Younger speculated that while most nobles wanted their castles to be built of solid stone, there were also families with less financial resources who had to use civil structures for defense, which he guessed should be the same approach.
When Stukov and the others filled it with gray cement, they left it to dry and let the cement dry inside the tower, a process that took about five days, and when everything was ready, Bruce knew that the time for the siege had come.
"All the archers go up to the tower." At noon, after the soldiers had eaten a meal of venison and oatmeal in the camp, the archers were driven up to the tower, which they climbed up the wooden ladder to the tall building, which was built into a circle at the top of which could accommodate more than forty soldiers at once.
"I didn't expect it to be so spacious up there." An archer with a bow and arrows in hand looked at the top of the tower and said to his companion.
"The Lord God is above, I only hope this tower will be a little stronger." Another archer came to the edge of the top of the tower, leaned down next to the wooden battlements, looked down, and said in horror.
"Hey guys, look at a bird." The young archer saw a bird swoop past the tower in a panic, it had probably never seen so many people at this height.
Jeffrey's castle guards also saw this, and they ran to each other in panic, and several soldiers had already reported to the nobles, and when the nobles climbed the walls, they could not help but be shocked to see the archers on the towers of the Glintons outside the castle.
"Quick, let the archers fire there, don't let them gain a foothold." The battle-experienced nobles immediately ordered the soldiers, knowing that the towers of the Gringtons were almost equal to the castle, so that the superiority of the archers on the defending side was no longer there.
"Oops, if the opponent suppresses the castle with a large number of archers, then we are doomed." The older nobleman said worriedly.
"Whoosh~~." In the corner towers and towers of the castle, the archers began to shoot, and arrows rained down on the towers.
"Be hidden, be hidden."
"Shoot, shoot back."
The arrows struck the Grinton Tower, striking the wooden tower with an aggressive sound, some falling in two, some piercing it, and Bruce's archers immediately crouched down and hid behind the battlements of the wooden tower, at which point a Sir Wallace nobleman commanded them loudly.
"Squeak, squeak~~." The archers, under the orders of the nobles, immediately drew their bows and arrows and fired arrows in the direction of the castle, and the arrows of both sides intertwined between the castle and the tower, sometimes even colliding together to make a sound.
"Lord Baron." Bruce walked out of the tent in full armor, and the vassals and retainers waited outside, and the soldiers had gathered in the camp at this time, waiting for Bruce's orders.
"Let Stukov bring that weapon up too." Bruce said to the man next to him.
"Understood, Lord Baron." The herald immediately ordered Stukov and the others.
Stukov and the craftsmen had been waiting not far from the tower, and when the baron's order was given, he nodded at the craftsmen, who immediately walked towards the tower with a wooden table and heavy things.
"What's that?" As they passed by the gathered soldiers, everyone looked at them in amazement, wondering why the craftsmen were carrying a wooden table.
"What a long arrow?" Others were amazed at a wooden barrel carried by the craftsmen, and several one-meter-long arrows were inserted in the barrel, which was unheard of.
"Whoosh, poof~~." The archers on both sides shot at each other, and the archers were killed and wounded by each other, but everyone knew that they had to suppress each other, otherwise they would have the advantage and morale of the other side.
"There are so many archers in the castle that we can't suppress them at all." An archer with his back against the wall battlements grumbled.
"Come and help, get these things up." At this time, Stukov climbed to the top of the tower and ordered the archers.
"Oh, what is this?" The archers hurriedly took their hands and carried the craftsmen's things up from the entrance to the top, and Stukov and the craftsmen climbed the wooden ladder up.
The craftsmen did not bother to catch their breath, they hurriedly placed the wooden table on the top of the tower, and then began to take out the delicate small parts from the bag, and then slowly put them together, and the archers looked at them in wonder, and at the same time, the arrows of the enemy in their ears became more and more dense, forcing them to bend down.
"These bastards have a lot of arrows." Stukov lay between the wooden battlements and looked at Jeffrey's walls with one eye, while Jeffrey's archers continued to fire at the walls and turrets.
"Lord Stukov, all right." A craftsman said to Stukov.
"Then hurry up, we're all going to be porcupines." Stukov complained.
"Got it, push." The craftsman nodded hurriedly, and he beckoned to his companions, and several craftsmen pushed the wooden table between the wooden wall stacks at the same time, and only then did the archers see the weapon clearly.
The whole area of the weapon was a large wooden table, but on top of it were three large crossbows sturdy tied with coarse linen, and on either side of the wooden table were two wooden wheels, and two craftsmen rotated the wheels by hand, and pulled the bowstring of the crossbow, which made a creaking sound, and then was hooked by a wooden wedge, and then another craftsman placed the long crossbow arrows in the barrel on it.
"Aim." The craftsman at the head leaned down, he looked at a crossbow at the front of the crossbow, aimed at the target on Jeffrey's wall, and when he was sure, he raised his head and gestured to his companions beside him.
"Hey." The craftsman picked up a large mallet, aimed it at a wooden wedge at the end of the crossbow, swung the mallet vigorously and struck the wooden wedge, and when the wooden wedge was knocked down, the wooden wedge immediately loosened the tight bowstring.
"Whoosh~~." The long crossbow bolt flew out with a thud, and the long crossbow let out a sharp sound of breaking through the air, like a terrible flying spear.
"Ah~~~." One of Jeffrey's archers was standing up, pulling his bowstring and preparing to shoot, when suddenly he saw a black thing flying towards him, and before he could react, the long crossbow bolt instantly pierced his body, and inertia carried him straight into the air, knocking him off the wall.
