Section 366 The Colorado Gold Rush
The establishment of the Republic of Texas is inseparable from the gold rush that broke out on the Colorado River, which is another logical relationship that leads to necessity by chance.
In its original history, the Republic of Texas also first separated from Mexico, and then merged into the United States, becoming New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Kansas and several other states in the southwestern United States.
But the original history has changed too much from the current history, and many things that would have happened did not happen, such as the fact that the Chinese were sold to the world as coolies. But many things, because the background and general trend of the occurrence cannot be changed, so there is a different nature, but similar result, that is, the Chinese immigrate to all parts of the world as free people, and the Chinese go to the world, not because the Chinese like to take risks, but mainly because the land in China can no longer support so many people, and the land is saturated, so they must go out.
Although the original history was to replace the black people after the abolition of slavery as coolies and work as coolies on the plantations and mines of Europeans, many people died in an unknown way, and their treatment was not much different from that of slaves. Now they are emigrating overseas as free people, and there is a strong, efficient government to help them, and even organize them to emigrate, which is much more efficient and much less costly. However, the specific result has not changed, that is, the Chinese still went out, because the internal factors that decided to go out of the Chinese have not changed, and they cannot be changed.
What are the internal causes of Texas independence in history, first of all, in 1821, the Mexicans opened the Santa Fe Trail to the world, allowing merchants to trade through it, which led to a large influx of American immigrants into the northern territory of Mexico, these Americans found that the climate was warm, the land was fertile, and there were few Spanish immigrants, only a few colonial and missionary strongholds, and some Indians who had converted to God lived around. As a result, American immigrants became the majority of the population in just a decade, and then the U.S. government, eager to expand westward, instigated the independence of Texas.
Have the internal causes of Texas independence changed from the emigration of the United States and the detailed expansion ambitions of the U.S. government? Nothing has changed! Otherwise, the United States would not have been in constant discord with the powerful China, and wouldn't it just want to grab the land of the Indians?
The internal causes remain the same, even if the process is a little tortuous, the final result is often almost the same.
It's just the process that is different.
Historically, Mexico had just become independent and was pressured by the United States to open the Santa Fe Trail to American merchants for trade. In this history, although Spain made a comeback and regained Mexico with the help of China, Mexico was in fact much tighter under Spanish control than the Mexican government.
In the case of the Santa Fe Trail, which caused the migration of immigrants from the United States, the historical discoverer of this trail was an American, of course, the American one, and the Spaniards and Indians probably knew about this trail for a long time. The trail was a gateway from the Arkansas River to the American Southwest, and in 1806 American explorer Zeburun Montgomery Pike led an expedition to survey the source of the Arkansas River. At that time, this was an unknown area, the Chinese settlers had not yet crossed the Rocky Mountains, and the Spanish forces had arrived here but were unable to establish colonies, and the area was home to the Indians. Pike's mission was to make friends with the local Indians and claim that the area belonged to the U.S. government, which was a common ploy of the U.S. government to defraud the Indians of land.
Pike traveled up the river to the source of the Arkansas River, Pike Hill, named after its discoverer, Pike. Winter arrived, leaving Pike unable to climb the mountain and having to return. Pike then turned south to find the source of the Jujube River, another tributary of the Mississippi River, but got lost and entered the New Mexico region. This was Spanish territory, and Pike was directly detained by the Spaniards. After his release, he followed a route home. The route was the Santa Fe Trail, which was used by thousands of American settlers from the Mississippi River Valley into New Mexico.
When Pike entered New Mexico, he was detained and imprisoned by the Spaniards for several months, because as a colonial power, Spain had always been wary of the infiltration of other countries into his colonies, especially the United States, as the greatest threat to North America.
So unlike in history, this era of American immigration to New Mexico was not so smooth, and it did not meet the era of Mexican independence and then no management of the frontier. Their infiltration was severely restricted by the Spanish colonial government.
Similarly, the Spanish colonial government, like Mexico, opened the Santa Fe Trail because at the Nanking Peace Conference, Spain was forced to declare the opening of all colonies in order to gain recognition of their power over the colonies by the Great Powers. The northern part of Mexico, where the Santa Fe Trail is located, was also one of them, and the Spaniards could not stop the Americans from using this power to enter the country for business.
But the Spaniards were careful not to allow the Americans to establish a colonial base, but this was shattered by the Gold Rush.
Due to the discovery and mining of gold in the San Francisco area in the early years of China, and later in the process of railway construction and exploration, gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and vigorously mined; The news of successive large-scale gold discoveries in the Rocky Mountains convinced Americans that there were other undiscovered gold deposits in the Rockies. So a large number of adventurers have flocked to the Rocky Mountain area, and this kind of professional purposeful search for gold is actually very easy to find. Because the Rocky Mountains are indeed rich in gold, and a lot of gold is contained in the river sand, ordinary people may not care when they see it, but as long as a professional grabs a handful of sand, they can immediately know if there is gold.
Gold mining in the Americas and South Africa has made China the world's largest gold producer, with an annual gold output of up to 300 to 500 tons.
China's monopoly on gold production and its fact that it is a major exporter of commodities have led to the continuous inflow of gold through trade into China, which has caused the West to continue to fall into a gold shortage, and the credibility of the pound has been questioned in many wars, and the Bank of England has repeatedly stopped payment. This is still the case in the United Kingdom, and other European countries and the United States generally implement the gold and silver standard, and silver, an unstable precious metal, has always played an irreplaceable role as a currency.
Britain still has the strength to unite other countries to put pressure on China, but the United States has no way to challenge China, but when everyone thinks that the Rocky Mountains contain gold, the Americans are the most excited, because they are in the Americas, and they are close to the water. They can't go to the Rocky Mountains in the Chinese-ruled area, and even if they do, they can't mine them. However, the northern part of Mexico, which was ruled by Spain, was also close to the Rocky Mountains, and perhaps there was gold somewhere.
Therefore, under the strict defense of the Spaniards, American slave owners who wanted to open up plantations could not enter New Mexico, but teams of American explorers continued to investigate and search here under the banner of doing business. They soon discovered gold, and it was abundant.
The Americans did not mine directly, the expedition team first drew a map, I don't know if it was a mistake, they thought that the place belonged to the south of the Colorado River, according to the agreement between China and the Spaniards, the two sides divided the border with the Colorado River, the north of the Colorado River belonged to China, and the south belonged to Spain, so according to the map of the Americans, this place belonged to Spanish territory.
So the American expedition approached the Spanish colonial government, claiming that they had the right to discover the gold mines, hoping to get the Spanish colonial government's authorization to exploit it, and they were willing to pay high taxes. But instead of giving them authorization, the money-hungry governor of New Spain seized them on the grounds that they had entered Spanish territory without permission, and demanded that they hand over the map. Apparently the Spanish governor intended to mine himself. The history of the Spaniards' search for gold here dates back two centuries, but it is not known whether it was bad luck or technical failure, and gold was never found.
The Spaniards underestimated the expedition, and the other side was prepared to seek Spanish authorization, and at the same time had already transmitted the news back to the United States, but the American government intervened and rescued the detained members of the expedition.
The Americans who were not authorized were not reconciled, and with the investment of wealthy businessmen in the eastern region, they formed a gold panning team and entered the gold panning land without authorization, anyway, only they had the map, and the Spaniards could not find it, so a team of Americans quietly infiltrated the gold mining area, and in just a few years, 30,000 people entered here.
With a crowd of this size, it was impossible to keep it a secret forever, and they had to transport it through the Arkansas River all the time, and they openly recruited gold diggers in the United States, and it was impossible for the Spaniards not to notice them, and it turned out that soon and the Spaniards bought a gold miner, and as a result, the location of the gold mine was easily found.
The Spaniards then quickly mobilized their troops, but shamefully, they were defeated in a clash with 30,000 gold-hungry Americans. American gold diggers then quickly contacted American adventurers in other parts of the southern Arkansas River, many of whom were hunters who had sneaked in to hunt for otter pelts. After a meeting together, these people decided to declare their independence, secede from Spain, and establish their own state.
They declared that their territory stretched east and south from the Colorado and Arkansas rivers to the Gulf of Mexico, and that they could effectively control the area, that is, the area near the gold mines, and even the important cities on the Santa Fe Trail near the Rio Grande in the south, Santa Fe, the core of Spanish rule in northern Mexico, could not cross, let alone the Gulf of Mexico.
After the Americans announced the establishment of the state, the Spaniards naturally did not recognize it and immediately continued to send troops to suppress it. As a result, the Spanish army of 50,000 was defeated by a temporary patchwork of only 30,000 Texan troops. The leader is a legendary figure named Sam Houston.
After the failure of the suppression, the Spaniards intended to continue to increase their troops, and the United States protested, demanding that Spain accept the reality of the independence of the Republic of Texas, and the United States was willing to mediate to shrink the territory claimed by the Republic of Texas, hoping that the two sides could reach a peace agreement.
It was in this context that the historic Mexican government abandoned Texas.
But it was Spain that now ruled Mexico, and it was impossible for Spain to give up knowing that there was an abundance of gold there. In order to avoid U.S. involvement, the Spanish government sought the support of the Chinese government of the Americas.
But when the crown prince sent someone to investigate the local terrain in detail, he suddenly found that the location of the gold mine, where it was Spain, not the United States, should be the territory of China and the Americas!
