Chapter Twenty-Six: Secret Mission
Young Corporal Martin was sitting on a train to Berlin with several other fighters, surrounded by civilians, but now no one but themselves knew that they were a group of soldiers.
Corporal Martin was originally an ordinary soldier of the 131st Infantry Regiment of the Wehrmacht stationed in Frankfurt, but the other day his regiment commander suddenly secretly found more than 30 young soldiers, including him, and arranged a strange order: to go to Berlin in plain clothes under the pretext of returning home to visit relatives, where Major General Miller led them on a secret mission.
Martin noticed that the soldiers who received the order with him all had one thing in common - they were very young and lived in or near Berlin.
Although the order was strange, as German soldiers, it was clear that obedience was unquestionable, and the young soldiers began to travel to Berlin by train in batches.
After a bumpy ride for most of the day, the group arrived at the Berlin train station, and it was the afternoon.
As soon as they got out of the car, they went to an inconspicuous hotel as they had agreed before, and said the code: "Today's weather is a little bad." ”
Then the boss said, "The clouds will eventually dissipate, I wonder if you can help disperse it?" ”
Finally the soldier replied, "Oh, I think we can." "The joint is done. If there are people around at this time, they will think they are crazy, because the weather in Berlin is sunny at the moment.
After the two sides exchanged codes, the boss hung up the sign that the business was closed and led them to the courtyard at the back of the hotel.
Martin was the last of the soldiers to set off, the others had arrived in Berlin two days earlier, and Martin was taken aback as soon as he entered the courtyard, which was now crowded with more than 100 people, and there were a few familiar faces among them—from another regiment also stationed in Frankfurt.
Seeing the boss walking into the courtyard with Martin and the others, an officer in military uniform at the front of the crowd walked quickly towards them, "Hello, soldier, I'm Major General Miller's adjutant, Major Bach." You're the last of the soldiers to arrive, and no one recognizes you on the way, right? ”
"No, sir!" The highest-ranking soldier in Martin's group replied loudly.
The officer smiled when he heard this, and said, "Okay, then everyone pay attention!" Pick up the weapons in turn! Then five people will rest in a room, dinner will be brought to your room, and from now on, no one will be allowed to leave their room. In the evening, Major General Miller will come and tell you what the mission is, disband! ”
When the more than 100 soldiers who stayed where they were heard this, they immediately divided into groups of five and walked to the rows of rooms.
Martin lay down on the bed when he got to the room, thinking that his home was not far from here, and that he must go home to see it when the mission was completed.
"Hey, Martin! What do you think we are doing when we return to Berlin? The mystery is mysterious, and I still don't know what the specific mission is. A soldier said to Martin while lying on his bed.
"I don't know what it is, but I'm always feeling uneasy." Martin replied with a frown.
"Quiet rest, looks like there is work to be done at night." The oldest soldier leaned his bulletless Mauser Type 98 rifle against the side of his bed, then lay down on the bed and continued: "We will do whatever the general tells us to do, and we will know what orders we have at night." ”
Martin and the others pursed their lips, turned sideways and closed their eyes, and slowly fell asleep.
"Hey, guys! It's time for dinner! I don't know how long I slept, but it was already dark, and at the door of the room stood a man who looked like a waiter, holding their dinner with stewed beef, fish and vegetables, and cornbread as the staple food.
Martin rubbed his eyes, glanced out the window at the sky, and then brought dinner for five people and beckoned the others to come and eat along.
"Wow, the dinner is very rich, and the food for the mission is good!" One soldier said as he gulped down his food, and the others were happily eating their dinner.
After dinner, the officers began to assemble their troops outside, and the more than 100 soldiers were elite, and the assembly speed was very fast.
In front of the soldiers was a makeshift podium, behind which a middle-aged man with the rank of major general was standing, and it was Major General Miller: "Soldiers, I think you are all curious about what mission I have transferred you from Frankfurt thousands of miles away. Before I introduce the mission, I will tell you about a man whose name you should be familiar with: León Andrés. That's right, the new chief of operations. He was originally just an ordinary soldier, but he was fortunate to be appreciated by the former chief of operations, Lieutenant General Strauss, and promoted him to the head of the armament department and the chief of the campaign and tactical department. He also forced Lieutenant General Strauss to give way to him. He's just a bastard! Speaking of this, Miller glanced at the soldiers in the audience with a look of incredulity.
"This bastard is simply a disgrace to the military!" "He's too embarrassed to be German." "Grab him and throw him in a goddamn prison!" The soldiers in the audience listened to Miller's words and expressed their dissatisfaction with Leon.
Miller was very satisfied, but he laughed secretly in his heart: These idiots, they will believe whatever I say, haha. Then he pressed his hand down at the excited soldiers, and said loudly: "Your task is to attack the war department at night, arrest Leon, and hang him!" ”
When the soldiers below heard this, they all shouted: "Yes! Grab that bastard and hang him! ”
Miller waved his hand and said, "Everyone takes the bullets and grenades, and then sneaks up on the war department in the dark of night and takes it down!" ”
Hearing this, the soldiers lined up neatly and walked to the ammunition distribution point on the side, and after receiving the ammunition, they pressed the golden bullets into the magazine and tied the grenades to their waists.
"Oh, I used to think that Major General Lyon was a good person, but I didn't expect him to be such a person, I really know people and don't know their hearts." Martin's comrades-in-arms gritted their teeth and said to Martin.
"But why do I always feel wrong? Since Major General Lyon became Chief of Operations, our training efficiency has improved a lot. Also, he taught us a lot of tactics, which I found very useful. If Major-General Lyon was the kind of person who betrayed Germany for his own interests, as Major-General Miller had said, how could he still care about the development of the army? Martin didn't get irrational because of Miller's two words like everyone else, he calmly found something wrong.
The soldier was stunned when he heard Martin's words, and said: "It seems to make some sense, oh, it doesn't matter, whether it's true or not, will it be clear when we catch Leon and ask?" ”
Martin nodded and said, "Well, you're right. But why do I feel so upset? As soon as he finished speaking, the officer not far away began to order the team to regroup and advance covertly towards the war headquarters.
The soldier finally said, "What is there to be disturbed? Can we still fail in the night raid? Hurry up, it's time to go. Then he turned and ran to the troops.
Martin stood still for a moment, grabbed his rifle and ran towards the team.
