Chapter 45: Zhuangzi's mantis arm stops the car's lament
In the third story in the fourth chapter of Zhuangzi's inner chapter, "The World", Yan Qi was invited to be the master of the prince of Weiguo, and before leaving, he asked for advice from the doctor of Weiguoyu. Eighty-one? Chinese? (8) ?. (8) 8 (8) 1 Z (1) .? The story of COM is very short, but there are two famous allusions, one is "the mantis arm blocks the car", and the other is "raising tigers for trouble".
As the chapter of "The World", it mainly talks about the affairs of the world and how to deal with the world, and naturally it is indispensable to talk about how to deal with the world.
In the third story, Lu Boyu taught Yan Yan how to behave in the world, which is worth learning from the world.
In this story, the method of life taught by Lu Boyu is different from the method taught by Confucius earlier, and specifically, it is the method of life of a true Taoist.
Some of the ways of dealing with the world taught by Confucius earlier are Confucianism, and Zhuangzi applied Confucianism. At its core, it is still preaching.
It can also be seen from this! Confucianism and Taoism have something in common. But then again! No matter which ideology it is, it is all in the service of survival, and there is a certain commonality.
The third story is about the Taoist way of dealing with the world, and then! From the Taoist method of dealing with the world, the law of all things is derived. Other words! The third story is about how people behave in the world, and the later story is about how things behave in the world and how trees behave in the world.
In other chapters of the book "Zhuangzi", other ways of living in the world are also discussed. For example, the goose that cries and doesn't crow.
The third story is mainly about "mantis arm blocking the car", and then it is extended to "raising tigers for trouble". It is said that the mantis arm blocks the car in the front, and the tiger is in the back.
How did Zhuangzi talk about the mantis arm blocking the car?
If you want to read it, you have to go down from the front.
In a word! In this social environment at that time, it was difficult for people in the world to survive. It's not something that can be avoided by avoiding. It's not what those academic spies imagine, nor is it what some people misunderstand: inaction, escapism, jumping out of the mountain boundary and not being in the five dusts, and it is not something that can be avoided by cultivating into immortals. No!
Under the whole world, it is not the king's land!
You are the Monkey King, you can't jump out of the palm of the Buddha's hand.
You can't avoid a relationship with real life, you have nothing to dodge. Furthermore! You can't avoid it, you have to be in contact with people, you have to be in touch with people. You eat salt, you have to dress and so on and you have to socialize with other people, otherwise you won't survive.
In modern society, you can't survive without socializing with people. Although modern society has reached the level of science and technology, there are more places for people to interact, and no one can do without anyone. Of course! This "who" is a generic term and refers to those you need.
Since there is no escapability, in order to survive, we must face it bravely.
Therefore! There is a third story that teaches us how to deal with the world in a Taoist way.
The mantis arm block car is to tell us that we are helpless in the face of reality!
If we have the power to change the world and save the world, then we should act. But it's not! Our strength is like the arm of a praying mantis, which cannot stop the wheel, the course of history, and the trend of ideology.
The wheels of history are unstoppable, and so is ideology. Because! The formation of social ideology is not a moment, but a long-term accumulation. So! With personal passion and ability, it is impossible to stop.
It will also take time to change the ideology of society and the consciousness of the world.
In front of the wheels of the historical process, in front of social ideology, no one can achieve immediate results. The only way is to do what we can to change little by little the social ideology that has been formed. It only takes a little bit to change, and it takes time to change completely. Everything is unconsciously and naturally.
Zhuangzi admonishes us not to block the car with our praying arms, which is a warning and reminder not to be self-conscious. In front of the wheel of history, in front of social ideology, in front of the monarchy, we are powerless, do not think that with dreams can be realized. It takes time and chance to realize your dreams, and you can't always achieve them with hard work.
Furthermore! What are our dreams? We are just trying to survive, to complete the process of this life. So! There is no need for us to make fearless sacrifices, to fight unnecessarily.
Just to survive, the way of life and the way of survival is much simpler.
Without superfluous and unnecessary pursuits, the burden of our lives is much easier.
In the third story, Zhuangzi also conveys a message to us, that is: as a human being, whether you are hidden in the court, hidden in the city, or hidden in the wilderness, you must come into contact with people, communicate with them, and make friends with the people around you.
Just like the otaku in modern society, no matter how you stay at home, you still have to go out more or less, and you still have to buy and sell on the street. Unless you have autism, or someone to take care of you. Otherwise! You have to make contact with people from the outside world, communicate with each other, and make connections. It's just that you're a little less than the normal people who go to work, not nothing.
If there is none, then there is a problem.
After talking about the origin of the mantis arm blocking the car, let's talk about raising tigers.
In the original text of "The World", Zhuangzi wrote:
You don't know who raises tigers? Don't dare to use a creature with it, and kill it with anger; Don't dare to use all things with it, and the wrath of it will be decided; When he is hungry and satisfied, he reaches his wrath. The tiger is different from others and flatters himself, and he is obedient; Therefore, the one who kills is also rebellious. The husband loves horses, with a basket full of arrows, with a drowning. It is suitable for gnats and flies, and from time to time, it is missing and destroying the chest. There is a meaning and love is dead, but you can't be careful!
In fact! This passage not only talks about the allusion of raising tigers for trouble, but also another allusion to "raising horses".
Let's start by translating this text into the vernacular.
Do you know how those who raise tigers raise tigers? They never dared to feed the tiger with live animals, because! They fear that raising tigers with live animals will lead to the ferocious nature of tigers. They also did not dare to feed the tiger with large pieces of food, because! They fear that tigers will provoke their ferocious nature when they bite large chunks of food. Know the hunger of the tiger, the nature of the tiger. Although the tiger and the human are not the same species, they wag their tails and beg for mercy from the people who raised them. Why? It is because the people who raise tigers conform to the nature of tigers and slowly change the nature of tigers. And those who raise tigers and are tortured and killed by tigers are because they provoke the ferocious nature of tigers.
There was a man who loved horses, and he used fine bamboo baskets to carry horse manure and used precious clam shells to catch horse urine. It just so happened that a gadfly bit the horse and sucked the blood, and this horse lover slapped it casually out of love, but he didn't expect the horse to be frightened and strangled his mouth, pinched off the bridle, and broke his chest and ran away. Horse lovers love horses, but they lose what they love. That's a good example! So! Can you be cautious in dealing with people?
After reading the above vernacular text, I thought? You don't need to explain any more, do you?
If we learn the lessons of those who raise tigers and horses, learn from another person who keeps tigers, and raise tigers according to the temperament of tigers, there will be no danger.
We can all get along with tigers, can't we get along with the world?
If we treat the world like a terrible tiger, will our lives still be in danger?
When we read the story of raising tigers in the back, let's read the previous way of teaching Yan Boyu how to behave in the world, do we have any insights?
