Chapter Ninety-Seven: The Decisive Battle of Worms (Part II)
The iron plate in front of us clanged, and the Burgundians lit torches to stop us, and then lit arrows with flames in an attempt to burn our siege towers.
This was an emergency measure for dead horses to be used as live horse doctors, and they also tried to burn the heavy iron plate with the faint flame of the arrow.
"Boom!"
The stones fired from the Burgundian catapults on the high ground in the city of Worms struck me again on our siege towers, and the violent shaking caused us to fall to the ground once more.
"The siege tower is broken, the siege tower is broken!"
I heard the exclamations of the soldiers on the lower floor, and through the cracked plank, I could clearly see that the layer under my feet had been smashed by flying stones into a hole the size of a man, and the cold wind poured into it, and with them came a large number of arrows, and in an instant the soldiers closest to the hole were full of arrows and fell.
"Steady! Steady! ”
I patted the shoulder of the soldier behind me who looked a little flustered, and said that it was comforting, but in fact, I didn't have a bottom in my own heart, who knew if this gap of how big a person would become the fatal point of destroying this siege tower?
"Fire! Fire! ”
I heard the exclamation of the soldiers beneath my feet again, and when I looked down, I saw that the floor below was ablaze and spreading. At the entrance of the cave, a steady stream of fiery arrows shot in, which not only intensified the flames, but also made it impossible for the nearby soldiers to extinguish the fire.
"The Burgundians are going to burn us!" The soldiers behind me were even more panicked, and the people behind me even grabbed the ladder as they climbed up, ready to escape from it at any moment.
"Damn, Bliss they're too slow!"
I know the price of wearing heavy armor, which is to sacrifice speed of maneuver, and the troops below must not only brave the dense barrage of arrows, but also constantly push these tons of big creatures forward, which is no easy task, and I must suppress the archers who are ready to burn us.
"Hey, soldier at the top!" I shouted at the plank above my head.
"What's wrong, Centurion?" I got a response.
"With a shuttle dart, suppress the Burgundians!" So saying, I took off my bag containing the pikes, which contained two pikes, and I handed them to the last soldier and told him, "Hand them over, I need them to keep them suppressed, otherwise this siege tower will be our grave!" ”
"Quick, take out all your pikes, you, send them all to me!"
Under my order, the soldiers untied their cloth bags for pikes, gathered them together, and handed them to the soldier, who bit his lower lip, he must have failed the escape plan he had just thought of, but an order is an order, and it must be carried out. He took a sharp breath, as if he had exhausted all his strength, and climbed the ladder up the ladder with the dozens of pikes on his back.
At the same time, there were noticeably fewer arrows flying through the hole, and the soldiers hurried to extinguish the flames that had not yet burned unstoppable.
"It's going to be connected to the city wall in a moment!" The soldiers above shouted a loud reminder, and I felt that everything around me was quiet, and through the gap I could clearly see the Burgundian archers running back and forth on the wall, shouting at each other, and people were constantly being hit by pikedarts, falling, and screaming.
"Enough distance to get there!" The soldier reminded again.
"Okay." My right hand is holding the lever to the side, and I only need to pull it now, and the baffle in front of me will be opened, so I don't know what the other side of the baffle is. I'm afraid there's nothing else but death.
"Dock! Docking! ”
The shout was only a few seconds apart, and in obedience, I gritted my teeth and slammed down with the lever in my right hand.
"Huh!"
The slabs in front of us fell suddenly, the smoky city, the crumbling walls, and dozens of Burgundian soldiers who had drawn their bows and pointed them at us. Instead of bows and arrows, they clenched between their fingers, but death, and the image almost stopped, and I fell to the ground in terror.
"Defense! Defense! ”
I shouted loudly, but it was too late, and the people behind me didn't react at all, and the dozens of sharp arrows were coming, and the few standing in the front row didn't have time to scream, and the arrows that pierced them had silenced them forever.
"Knock ......"
The corpses fell to the ground with a dull thud, and I had no time to lament their deaths, so I stood up and forwarded with my shield in hand, and at this moment, I must lead the attack, for I am a centurion!
"Listen to me!"
I turned back to the hesitant soldier and yelled, "Follow my pace, attack!" ”
I don't know how they reacted next, but I had already jumped up the city wall on the falling baffle, and in the face of my arrival, the Burgundian was clearly not ready to receive a "distinguished guest" like me. I drew my cavalry sword with a "brush", and in front of the Burgundian closest to me, he had only a wooden bow and an unwound arrow, and at that moment I saw despair in his eyes, since it was the choice of fate, what reason did I have for mercy?
I calmed down, raised my hand and swung my sword, slashing it into the neck where it met his shoulder, and the whole blade ended in the man's shoulder. His facial features were all twisted together, and he must have been in great pain. The blade rotated and translated, and then I pulled out the cavalry sword with a sharp force in my right hand, and after a flash of silver light, the blood was like a blowout, instantly staining half of the man's body red. He clutched his wound and tried to stop the gushing blood, but to no avail, I didn't hesitate for a moment, I raised my foot and kicked him down, and said silently: "First! ”
The obstruction fell, and I immediately saw a panicked Burgundian who had dropped his bow and arrows and was busy drawing the dagger from his waist.
"Die!"
I didn't intend to give him a chance to draw his weapon, but I burst into a frenzy and came to the man over the body of the guy I had just kicked and was still twitching on the ground, waiting for death.
"Bang!"
I jerked my left hand upward, and with a heavy broad shield, struck the Burgundian in the jaw. I didn't know how many teeth the guy had lost, and I didn't have time to look closely, but the moment he fell to the ground and covered his face, I slammed his chest with my shield.
"Whew!"
He was almost speechless, and I immediately raised my sword, tilted it forty-five degrees, and stabbed it into the Burgundian in the chest. For some reason, I knew how to do it, and I was convinced that I had pierced his heart. Turning my right hand ninety degrees to the right, the wound expanded again, and as it was withdrawn, the wound was like a fountain, pouring red blood all over my body.
At this point, I muttered, "The second one! ”
