Chapter Ninety-Three: The Cross Faith

Exhaustion, not only the Burgundians are exhausted, but we stand in the snow and ice in addition to shivering, exhaustion occupies each of our bodies.

"Damn Burgundians, I really don't want to spend it like this anymore!"

The soldiers began to complain, and I knew it was really tiring, at least, I was shivering even in a fur blanket.

I tried to divert my attention, because it was distracted, and maybe it wasn't so cold anymore.

It was then that I turned my attention to our chief centurion, Guy. He didn't know why he was so calm, he crossed his hands and pulled at his cloak tightly, and the rest of the time he paced idly except to remind the Burgundians to cheer them up. I found that I couldn't read this guy anymore, and there was a golden chain between his right fingers, and I didn't know what the jewelry was at the head of the chain.

My gaze moved up from Guy's arm to his cloak, where the golden brass scales loomed through the gaps in his cloak, and up again, I saw the gray-white wolfskin, which was supposed to be a wolf in the Norse jungle, and was very valuable. The gray wolf floated back and forth with the breeze, and then looked up, it was his horned helmet, without any horse decoration.

It's just that I found something interesting, which is carved on the side of his helmet, and there is a carving on it, which is a cross, especially like the iron cross of the German army now, with both sides of the helmet. It's like a badge, it must have a meaning! I thought, reaching out and trying to touch the sides of the helmet, there was nothing, just the iron surface that had become a little sticky from too much cold.

It must be a personal favorite, I looked at Bliss and the other soldiers around me, none of them had helmets on them.

Andrew and his phalanx were on my left, and to my right was the phalanx of Guy's headquarters, and strangely enough, whether they were soldiers or centurions, all of them had the same carving on their helmets as Chief Centurion Guy, the Iron Cross.

Are they all Christians? I asked myself inwardly, and my puzzled gaze caught their attention, and I saw the centurion beside me turn his head sideways like an eagle's gaze, and look at me with a hairy stare at me. I quickly lowered my head and didn't look at him.

This guy, since I was awarded the Centurion, apart from the soldiers of my own phalanx and Andrew, the two Centurion men under Guy's command have never dealt with me. I don't know why, although I am in the same legion brigade, but I am not in the same heart.

Chief Centurion Guy had nothing to do, but he walked to the phalanx to my right and whispered, and it was not difficult to see from their expressions that they were very friendly to each other. On the contrary, for the two phalanxes of me and Andrew, Chief Centurion Guy can come less, so I try not to come, I don't know why, maybe because we were temporarily promoted by Aetius, which has always made Chief Centurion Guy hold a grudge, and then, I can't think of any other problems.

After a whole afternoon of looking at each other, I finally heard the sound of the horn of retreat, and on the way back, I looked down and pondered, thinking about everything I had seen in the ice and snow today, the cross, the cross carved into the helmet, why only they had it, and our phalanx and Andrew's phalanx had been in the queue for so long without any notice or reminder to carve this iron cross on the helmet.

Ask Briss? Forget it, this guy hasn't been here as long as I have, and he definitely doesn't know as much as I do, I'm afraid he doesn't even see such a difference!

Back in the camp, everyone disbanded on the spot, and I went back to my tent, the cold didn't subside, but I was still apprehensive about what I had seen, so I was going to go to Andrew and see what he could do.

As I walked along the road, I saw more soldiers, standing on both sides of the camp road, chatting, without exception, with deliberately carved iron crosses above their heads. They used to do the same, but I didn't pay too much attention, but this time, they were deeply attracted to me, and although they didn't pose any threat to me, it was not difficult to see from their expressions that we were not on the same path.

"Luga!"

Just as I was thinking about what to tell Andrew about this, someone was calling my name, and I turned around and saw Levi.

Levi strode towards me, head held high and stomach puffed, I had never seen this guy so arrogant.

"Yo, what kind of wind blew you here?"

I thought nothing good was going to happen, and looked at him alertly, this time to see what kind of trouble he was going to make.

"No, no, no, it's nothing, it's just that according to Marshal Aetius's orders, come and see you and Andrew, what, don't you welcome me?" Levi spread his hand, and there didn't seem anything suspicious, this guy.

"I really didn't expect that Marshal Aetius, who was high above, would care about our two little characters." I deliberately mocked him.

"Oh, Luga, I don't have time to play tricks with you, I don't have any of them, let's get in and talk." Levi said that he was about to leave.

He must have something important, and though I was reluctant, my body honestly brought him to Andrew's tent.

As soon as I entered the tent, I saw Andrew wrapping his feet in a fur blanket, this guy must have frozen in the snow. He was equally surprised to see us enter, especially in the face of Levi, who was indescribably excited. I saw him pounce and grab Levi's hand, Levi's face was uncontrollable surprise and disgust.

"Quick, tell me, is Marshal Aetius okay?" Andrew hugged Levi's shoulders and shook desperately, this is probably not what Levi wanted, I saw that his face was full of pain.

"Enough, enough, Andrew!"

Levi struggled to break free from Andrew's arms, gasping for breath again and again.

"Okay, Levi, tell me what you came here for, didn't you want to convey the orders of Marshal Aetius?"

"Oh yes, you see, your friend's enthusiasm has almost made me forget about it." Levi was smiling, rubbing his sore arm that was being held by Andrew, and then looked at the two of us with a serious face and asked in a low voice, "During this time, have you seen some unfriendly movements in the unit you are in?" ”

"Unusual movements?"

I was a little puzzled, and I didn't know what kind of movement Levi was talking about. Levi looked at me, I didn't say a word, and then looked at Andrew, who shook his head.

"Oh, no, are you only in tents?" Levi looked a little impatient.

"If the carving of the Iron Cross on their helmets is a problem." I immediately thought of what I had been wondering about, and I brought it up, hoping that Levi would explain it to me.

"Iron Cross."

Levi recounted to the side, looking a little uneasy.

"It's the kind of cross carved on the sides of the helmet." In order for him to understand, I was able to use my hand to make a gesture on my own helmet.

"Oh! That's just an inconsequential matter of faith, Luga. Levi breathed a sigh of relief at this time, and the original uneasiness on his face disappeared without a trace.

"So, why!" Again, my question arises: "Why do they have, but our two foreign phalanxes don't?" I've never noticed it before! ”

"Luga!"

Levi interrupted me.

"It's not something you need to discuss, no, isn't your hundred-man team experiencing some casualties, I'll go back now and ask Marshal Aetius for instructions to replenish you."

It was all perfunctory, and Levi left after saying the painless supplies, without even saying goodbye, and I really couldn't understand what was going on in their heads.

If the Iron Cross is a faith, then Chief Centurion Guy and his two centurions, what do they really believe!
