Lu Feng respectfully said: "Since the ancestor has called us here, we must do our best." I wonder what you want us to paint?"
The Five Patriarchs reverently said: "There are many shocking stories of seeking the Buddha in the Ranga Sutra, and I want you to follow these stories and depict them in the form of paintings, and gather them in the picture scroll. ”
The Ranga Sutra, whose full name is the Ranga Abhadra Sutra, refers to the scriptures spoken by the Buddha in Sri Lanka, which believes that all dharmas are "seen by the mind" and that all things are created by the mind. It has a great influence on Zen Buddhism, and it is one of the "six classics" on which the Chinese Buddhism Dharma Xiangzong is based. After pondering the intentions of the five ancestors, Zhang Beijia said: "To sum up, it should be called 'Lenga Sect's lineage order map'. ”

Zhang Beijia: "Why not?"
The five ancestors said: "In the Zen forest, the high priest is like a cloud, although I was promoted by the monks as the five ancestors of Zen Buddhism, but in the Dongchan Temple where I am the abbot, I painted these long scrolls, to self-promotion, self-boasting, will not make the world laugh?"
Zhang Beijia laughed: "The master has always had a very high level of understanding, and no one can match it, but this time he was stunned. ”
The fifth ancestor blinked his old eyes: "Confused?"
Zhang Beijia: "Master, you are too anxious, this time you misunderstood what I meant." ’’
The Fifth Ancestor was puzzled: "I misunderstood what you meant?"
"Yes," Zhang Beijia explained, "I want to draw the 'Five Ancestors Blood Map', not just you, the Ancestor. ”
The Fifth Ancestor asked, "So, what do you want to paint?"
Zhang Beijia explained: "But from the painting of the first ancestor of Bodhidharma, Hui Ke, Seng Can, Daoxin, until your fifth ancestor Hongren master, inheritance of the Buddha lamp, how many thrilling stories, a Zen transmission of the bloodline!"

"Five Ancestors Bloodline Diagram." Zhang Beijia explained. The ancestor Bodhidharma came by boat from Tianzhu, crossed the river with a reed, faced the wall for nine years, and only after many twists and turns did the world be convinced; The second ancestor Hui can break his arm, the blood stains the red snow, and the world is shocked and weeps ghosts and gods; Three Patriarch Monks. Xiao Ran meditated, secluded in the mountains; The four ancestors of Taoism, often sit day and night, do not lie down, more than 60 years of coercion, Shuangfeng preaching; Fifth Ancestor, you became a monk with Daoxin at the age of seven, and for decades, you have been through ups and downs and opened the door to the Dongshan Method. From the first ancestor to the master, everyone has walked through a bumpy road in life. All of them are models of dedication and hard work. ”
Lu Xianfeng agreed: "Yes, it is not easy for your Zen Buddhism to be passed down from generation to generation. These singing and weeping stories are used as the genealogy of Zen Buddhism, painted into images and left on the wall. It is indeed a great thing to be easy to understand, to commemorate the former and enlighten future generations!"
The Fifth Ancestor thought for a while, nodded and said, "The two of you are reasonable, and the proposal is also very good." Just do as you say. The two of you discuss it and decide on a first draft. And then study with the old man. ”
Zhang Beijia and Lu Fengfeng said in unison: "Okay." ”
The Fifth Ancestor asked, "Do you estimate how long it will take to come up with the first draft?" ”

After sending off Zhang Beijia and Lu Xian, and returning to the abbot's room, the fifth ancestor felt extremely out of breath, knowing that his mental strength was gradually exhausted, so he resolutely decided to take an exam among all the disciples to see who could most thoroughly comprehend the Buddha's Zen machine.
The next day, the Five Patriarchs summoned all the monks and laymen of the whole temple to the lawn in front of the main hall.
The fifth ancestor wore a golden robe embroidered with gold thread, and held a golden monk's bowl in his left hand.
This robe, the golden bowl, was brought by the first ancestor Bodhidharma from Tianzhu and passed down from generation to generation of Buddhas.
This treasure, just as the emperor has the supreme jade seal of the Zhenguo, serves as a symbol of the supreme power of the Buddha.
Shenxiu, who was standing in front of him, saw these two holy relics, and couldn't help but feel excited: he had been to Dongchan Temple for so many years, and the five ancestors had never worn the robe so ceremoniously in front of the monks. If these treasures fall into his own hands, he will become the sixth generation master of the Zen Forest.
Just when Shenxiu wanted to get into the wrong, the fifth ancestor had a serious face and said in a solemn tone: "The vicissitudes of the world, the reincarnation of the sun and the moon, I have now reached the time when the oil lamp is extinguished, I want to teach you the secrets of Zen Buddhism, so as to continue the lineage of Zen Buddhism." Anyone who is in our Dongchan Temple, whether he has become a monk or a handyman who has not yet been ordained; Regardless of his status in the temple, he can write out the state of mind that he has realized after many years of practice in Zen verses. If anyone's verses best express the nature of the Buddha, the essence of Zen, and the highest realm, I will teach him the secrets of Zen and the sacred relics that have been passed down from generation to generation, the robe, the mantle and bowl. That is, in the future, that person will be the sixth generation of our Zen masters. ”
The words of the five ancestors really made all the monks and laypeople in the Dongchan Temple excited. How many winter nights when the wind blows the old trees and the snow hits the cold windows, how many hot and unbearable summer days, facing the red fish and green chime, facing the green lights and yellow rolls, and facing the hard work, everyone is inspirational and painstakingly cultivated, in order to achieve great things and cultivate positive results. Now, when the opportunity comes, why not excite them?
In the hall, in the meditation room, in the monk's house, in the mill, in the vegetable field, under the linden tree...... In every corner of Dongchan Temple, monks of all sizes have their own ideas: some feel that their literary talent is low, and how to write is not as good as the "Theravada" senior brother Shenxiu, thinking of this, they are too lazy to use their brains to think about it; Some are flipping through the books, meditating and pondering, and searching for dry intestines is not a word; Some people who are slightly literate are troubled by the fact that they can't come up with a discourse that gives insight into the Zen machine.
And Shenxiu, who was already the "Theravada" elder brother of the Five Ancestors, often performed his duties on behalf of the teacher, and his understanding was very high, and he knew that this was the most critical moment in his life. But he also had his own troubles, because he composed a few verses, and he always felt that it was not ideal, and he was uneasy.
On a moonlit night, the restless Shenxiu couldn't sleep peacefully in bed, looking at the moon hanging high outside the window was so pale, he couldn't sleep anymore, got up and opened the door, walked out of the monk's room alone, made a few back and forth stretching and flexing movements with both hands, and then walked up along the stone stone of the Twin Peaks, while breathing in the fresh air of the night, while searching for dry intestines. Walking, walking, unconsciously came to the white lotus pond in the middle of the mountain. The white lotus is blooming, and the night breeze is sending bursts of fragrance.
Shenxiu felt that her legs were a little tired, and she lay under the tall Bodhi tree next to the white lotus pond, her hands resting behind her head, looking up at the vast night sky.
The night sky was inky blue, the moon was high, the wind had stopped, and there was not a trace of clouds floating away in the sky.
"Ah, what a beautiful moonlit night, what a beautiful sky! What is this clean night sky like?" Shenxiu muttered to himself, the tentacles of his mind let go, and he was searching.
Suddenly, the spirit of the rhino made him suddenly wake up: "Ah, spotless, like a bright mirror! Our Zen realm should also reach this realm!" Shenxiu felt that the clouds in his thoughts were gradually wiped away, revealing a piece of emptiness. Suddenly, inspiration gushed out, and he slapped his thigh with joy, and finally thought of a verse, and rushed back to the temple quickly, and went straight to the abbot's room in the south corridor, bent his index finger, and just wanted to knock on the door of the abbot's room of the five ancestors, but he froze: the city of the five ancestors is unfathomable, what is his favorite verse? There is not yet a single reference phrase. Although I feel that this verse I made is perfect, it is my own personal will. What I'm afraid of is that once it is submitted, the five ancestors are not very satisfied, and it will be too late to insult at that time.
The severity of this is related to the future of his life. If you are too reckless, it may only backfire. Thinking of this, Shenxiu turned back to the monk's room where he was staying, and wrote down the verses overnight.
In what way and when should this verse be presented to the five ancestors?
The hesitant and panicked state of mind has been tormenting Shenxiu. Suddenly, an impulse drove him to the south corridor like a devil, wanting to express his heart to the five ancestors. But when he arrived at the door of the abbot's room of the five ancestors, it stopped abruptly. The crimson door seemed to separate him from the Five Ancestors into two states of mind, two worlds.
Shenxiu sighed secretly, and left quietly in despair.
In this way, Shenxiu wandered indecisively in front of the abbot's room of the five ancestors in the south corridor, coming and going, going and coming. For four days and four nights, a total of thirteen competitions, but he never had the courage to knock on the door of the abbot's room and tell the five ancestors about his heart.
It wasn't until late at night on the fifth day that the crickets, which usually like to chirp, stopped whining. The monk of the Shou Watch Temple knocked on the four watches, Shenxiu tossed and turned on the bed, and suddenly on a whim, he jumped up from the bed and slapped his thigh: "Good idea!" "Shenxiu ghost made the god to go to the desk, grind the ink in the Fengchi Duan inkstone, wrapped the Xuancheng pen with a cloth together with the Duan inkstone, and quietly came to the powder wall of the south corridor in front of the abbot's room of the five ancestors, looked around, and confirmed that there was no one around, so he raised his pen and wrote this poem in one go:
The body is a linden tree
The heart is like a mirror
Wipe diligently
Don't let it get dusty
Before the ink of the verses had dried, Shenxiu hurriedly packed up the pen and inkstone, walked away quickly like a night owl, and secretly returned to the monk's room where he was staying.
