Those who survived this reconnaissance squad were able to inform the location of the German enemy lurking under the Mamayev post by signal flag or by telephone (if the telephone line had not been blown up).

Then the Germans reacted accordingly.

Of course, this reaction was not to launch a charge, because this is usually the time when the Soviet artillery fire extended, and the Soviet troops followed these artillery fire to launch a charge, and the German soldiers who rushed forward were inevitably killed and injured by the artillery fire.

The Germans reacted by blockading the charging Soviets with a large number of shells, just like the Soviets.

Of course, this was only a partial killing and wounding of Soviet troops, and the surviving Soviet troops would eventually brave artillery fire to rush to the Mamayev post.

At this time, the Germans launched a counteroffensive under the cover of artillery fire and tangled with the Soviet troops......

As it is now, as soon as the artillery fire in the direction of the Soviet troops stopped, the Germans jumped up from their hiding places and rushed up the hill shouting.

As soon as the Soviets occupied the Mamayev Hill on the front foot, the Germans rushed forward on the back foot.

The distance between the enemy and us was so close that the Soviets could not blockade it with artillery fire at all, so it quickly became a hand-to-hand fight.

The Germans did not suffer a loss in hand-to-hand combat, because the Germans had MP43 in their hands, especially the Soviet army's charge had been dispersed by artillery fire, and it was a small pull to rush up the hill, while the German army rushed up in batches, so a charge beat the Soviet army hard.

After the Soviets were knocked out of the Mamayev Heights, the Germans retreated from the hill again.

"Comrade Rodimtsev!" The commander of the 13th Regiment of the 39th Guards Infantry Division Glinka reported to Rodimtsev: "We occupied the Mamayev Gang several times, but several times we were beaten back by the counterattack of the Germans, the enemy's counterattack was fierce, they were all equipped with submachine guns, and our firepower was completely suppressed by the other side!" ”

Glinka's seemingly normal report actually contains two errors:

One is that the Germans are not counterattacking, but are garrisoned in a situation like a counteroffensive.

The other is that the Germans have assault rifles instead of submachine guns.

The second mistake doesn't matter yet, after all, it's just a matter of name. The first mistake made Rodimtsev think that the Soviets were on the verge of capturing Mamayev Heights, and that they could take Mamayev Posts with more effort or a little more force.

Worse still...... Rodimtsev took it for granted that in this kind of artillery battle and close combat, how many casualties the Soviet army would have, and how many casualties the German army would correspondingly.

This judgment may be true in other theaters, but not in Mamayev Heights.

So Rodimtsev didn't think much about it, and immediately ordered: "Comrade Glinka, attack at any cost, the enemy has the same difficulties as us, you must hold on, soon the fascists will collapse in the face of our offensive, understand?" ”

Glinka continued to attack Mamayev Hill according to Rodimtsev's orders, and it was not until it was dark that evening, when a regiment of more than 2,000 men was almost finished, and Colonel Glinka was killed on the spot, that Rodimtsev felt that something was wrong and finally stopped this senseless attack.

After getting in touch with Stalingrad, political commissar Kokrov reported to Rodimtsev: "Comrade Rodimtsev, our people see that the Germans did not actually occupy the Mamayev Heights, and they are charging back and forth to the heights like us!" ”

Hearing this, the muscles on the left side of Rodimtsev's face couldn't help jumping...... The left side of his face was wounded during the Spanish Civil War, and a piece of shrapnel stuck in his jaw through his cheek, although the shrapnel was successfully removed, it caused his mouth to tilt to the left, and the muscles of his left face twitched when he was nervous or angry.

That's when he realized that he had been fooled, that the Germans were not fighting a war of attrition with themselves, and that their casualties would probably be much lower than those of the Soviet troops.

Rodimtsev guessed correctly, the German army, with the advantage of the MP43 and the coordination of mortars, long-range artillery and even tanks, only suffered more than 200 casualties on this day, and the casualty ratio reached 10 to 1.

But even so, Qin Chuan still felt a pain in his flesh, because the 1st Infantry Regiment was the elite of the German army, and the casualties of more than 200 people were not small.

But Qin Chuan had no choice.

Because only in this way can the central ferry of the Soviet army be effectively blocked, and at the same time, the Soviet army will be consumed...... It is conceivable that if the Soviet army could not untie this knot, then the Soviet army's vital forces in Stalingrad would soon be exhausted, and it would not be long before Stalingrad would become an empty city that was left undefended.
