Chapter XXII—The Servant of God
In the Hagia Sophia, the morning bell is drummed, the clergy pray, the crucifix of Jesus is hung high on the cross, and the thorn-bearing Christ has entered a state of death, but his face is calm and serene, death does not deprive him of spiritual strength, and the wisdom and noble spirit are still clearly discernible.
Patriarch Theodosius I stood under the statue of Christ and prayed to God for peace and prosperity, when a priest hurried into the cathedral and whispered a few words to the Patriarch.
Patriarch Theodosius faintly turned his head to look at the somewhat anxious priest and whispered, "Child, all beings are equal before the Lord, and what is more important than hearing the gospel of God?" Go back and copy the Bible ten more times! ”
"Yes, Patriarch."
"Let our guest wait a little longer, and see him when I finish praying."
Patriarch Theodosius spoke unhurriedly, then closed his eyes and continued to pray reverently, his soul seemed to be sublimated at this moment, and the heavenly kingdom of God opened the door for him.
After a while, the Patriarch opened his eyes and motioned for the priests standing next to him to stand down, and a black-robed stranger walked in.
The black-robed man came to the Patriarch and knelt down, kissed the instep of his feet, and then lay on the ground and wept lowly, as if desolate.
"Your Excellency, you are God's shepherd on earth, who has nurtured all beings on earth for God, and now the poor people of Rome are suffering, so I beg you to lend us a hand and save us from our doom!"
The Patriarch just quietly turned his back to the black-robed man, as if he had returned to prayer, and nothing in the world could make him move his heart again.
"Do you want to forsake God's suffering people?"
The black-robed man's wail became more and more poignant, and he even moved his steps and hugged the thigh of the great patriarch, who was afraid that the man would not intend to let go if he did not agree.
Theodosius turned sharply, glared at the black-robed man, and stepped forward to suddenly remove the black hood that had covered his head.
"Isaac Angelos, are you really just coming to Hagia Sophia to pray to God for saving the world? Then why do you want to let this suffering world rise again! ”
"God forgives sinners, I just want to overthrow the rule of a tyrant and restore Constantinople to its original peaceful and prosperous state!"
Patriarch Theodosius' merciless rebuke did not deter the man, but he replied solemnly that the black-robed man was Isaac Angelos, and that he had not been arrested after Andronica's defeat.
After realizing that Andronica's rebellion plan was not successful, Isaac secretly arranged a similar-looking double in Constantinople, and immediately sought an opportunity to escape after the sword of Damocles was launched.
Isaac Angelos, after all, was the future sorcerer who usurped the Komnenian dynasty, and he had already arranged a retreat for himself, and when Emperor Alexios returned to Constantinople in victory, he hid in secret, waiting for the opportunity to make a comeback.
The brothers Theodor Arsen and Ivan Asen had long been interested in leading the Bulgarians in a rebellion in order to fight for the freedom and independence of the Bulgarians.
When Isaac got the news, he contacted the nobles of the imperial capital who were dissatisfied with the emperor, and the two sides hit it off.
Although the Greek aristocracy was purged, their strength was still strong, and their local influence was still very large, and the Bulgarians had also accumulated strength for more than a hundred years, and after the two sides were secretly linked, a great Bulgarian uprising from the Danube to the Aegean Sea was slowly opened.
But in the end, the rabble was a rabble, and the rebel armies were each king, and they divided their troops to plunder, which greatly offended the interests of the Greek nobility.
But there is no way, if you do it to the Bulgarians, it will be tantamount to tearing your face, and the Greeks are worried that the news will be leaked to the emperor and have to suffer a dumb loss, even so, both sides have left a gap in their hearts and can no longer cooperate sincerely.
That's not all, the emperor also sensed that something was wrong, and left Licinius to hurry up and search for the traitor, and he led people to follow the clues all the way to Isaac.
After Isaac's whereabouts may be exposed, the nobles of the various families are eager to send killers to kill him, how can they find an escape route for him, but Isaac, the intermediary liaison, will be miserable.
Isaac Angelos thought about it and finally decided to come to the Patriarch of Constantinople, although the Patriarch seemed to be high in the clouds, but the emperors of the Komnenos family used the church as a money bag at every turn, squeezing the church's money.
Isaac believed that the Patriarch was quiet on the surface, but deep down he must have been dissatisfied with the rule of the Komnenos.
Now that he had come to defect, if the Patriarch would be willing to take refuge, Licinius would not dare to blaspheme God in the holy Hagia Sophia, no matter how arrogant he was.
The people of Greece have always served God faithfully, looking after the bones of Jesus and his saints.
For them, being able to kiss the relics can bring them luck, which shows the pure faith of the Greeks.
As God's walking apostle, the Patriarch was a living saint, and the Greeks regarded the emperor as a person appointed by God and honored the Patriarch.
Patriarch Theodosius was silent for a long time, Isaac was anxious when he saw that Patriarch was silent, he was now being chased too quickly by Licinius's dog, if Patriarch did not help, I am afraid he would really become a prisoner of Emperor Alexios.
"The Emperor has never taken the initiative to worship God in Hagia Sophia since he ascended the throne in the past, nor has he taken the initiative to donate any gold or silver to the Church, and his greed and shamelessness are far greater than those of the previous emperors of the Komnenos, can you tolerate the Church being controlled by this kind of dumb king?"
"Isaac, you speak what the devil has taught you, and you foolishly want God's servants to rebel against the emperor with you, do you know how many Romans have perished by the Bulgarian sword because of your conspiracy?"
Patriarch Theodosius looked at this embarrassed lost dog with contempt, how could the grace of the Church make such a tiger and wolf remembered if Isaac could easily rebel against his master when danger came.
"You go out, you're not welcome here, don't come back in the future!"
The Patriarch unceremoniously ordered the expulsion of the guests, and then left Isaac in the Hagia Sophia, and it was difficult to guarantee that Licinius would not get the news.
The Patriarch did not intend to turn against the Emperor so quickly until the interests of the Church were violated, and the Orthodox Church of Constantinople had always been under the control of the Emperor, and he lacked the confidence to confront the Emperor.
Isaac looked back at Hagia Sophia, full of anger with nowhere to vent, and he lamented that the conspirators were a group of unconspiracy people, who would only start a rebellion by chance, take advantage of the common people, and oppose the emperor, who would sooner or later be defeated one by one.
