Chapter Ninety-Three: The Burning of the City
Samsun, the city is dead silent, only the trebuchets on the outskirts are still roaring.
Khayyam looked at the head of the city that had raised the flag again, and was silent.
The main force of 30,000 imperial troops marched east along the coast and stepped into the territory of the Seljuks.
And the Imperial naval fleet quickly suppressed the poor sea power of the Roma.
After unsuccessful protests by Genoese merchants, the Imperial Navy fleet blockaded the sea and no one could leave.
Eight thousand light cavalry of the Second Army of the Imperial Army plundered in all directions.
The Roma on the outskirts, driven by the cavalry of the Imperial Army, were forced to take refuge in Samsun.
Now the main forces of the Imperial Army have completely surrounded this place.
Khayyam was accustomed to everything that followed, and the veteran's skillful use of soldiers made it not difficult to besiege it at all.
The giant trebuchets of the Imperial Army were set up, and a team of 200 people was set up to drop stone projectiles with all their might.
"This is Samsun's second time raising the white flag, right?"
Khayyam looked at the city calmly and muttered to himself.
The white flag swayed in the city, but the Imperial Army ignored it, ignored it, and went all out.
Rubble splattered, walls crumbled, blood spilled, but the Imperial commander was unmoved.
"It's not enough!"
"It's not enough!"
"It's not enough!"
"Go on!"
"Go tell the projection team, give me all the strength to attack, don't stop for a moment."
"Yes, sir!"
The herald brought Khayyam's military order, and the Imperial army fired boulders even more frantically, and the wails in the city were clearly audible.
"My lord, what is this?"
"Fear!"
"We're going to bring fear to the Seljuks!"
"These nomads of the East haven't tasted pain for too long, and I'm just letting them reminisce."
Listening to the indifferent words of the commander of the imperial army, Shishman was dumbfounded.
What a man with bad tastes!
……
At that time, at noon, under the fierce offensive of the Imperial army, a section of the city wall was overwhelmed and collapsed in mourning.
"That's it!"
Khayyam's order was conveyed and the Imperial Army stopped the launch of the trebuchet.
"Don't you go in?"
Khayyam chuckled.
"You are the first person to instigate me to attack the city!"
Then the commander of the Imperial Army straightened his colors and continued.
"Street fighting is the least favorite battle for me, and for almost all officers of the Imperial Army."
"We don't have the luxury of throwing the precious lives of Imperial soldiers into a meaningless meat grinder."
"That's enough!"
"Wait for the Seljuk messenger to come out!"
Turning to leave, Khayyam left a narrow back, but it was Shishman, the commander of the Imperial Army, who was thoughtful.
Inside the tent, the soldiers of the Imperial Army were all standing with guns, and the officers were already sitting cross-legged below.
Only the messenger of Samsun stood alone in the middle, like a monkey being watched.
"Messenger of the Seljuks, tell me what you are here for!"
"Your Excellency of the Imperial Army, our Ghazi would like to surrender to you!"
Looking playfully at Samson's messenger, Khayyam didn't speak for a while, and finally when the messenger was almost in despair.
"Ransom!"
Samson's messenger was pleasantly surprised, and looked up at the commander of the Imperial Army, but he had a wicked smile on his face.
"Ten gold coins for each man, five gold coins for each woman, one gold coin for children, and all those who could not pay the ransom were put to death."
"Oh, the Greeks can just leave!"
Under the jaw-dropping expression of the Samsun emissary, Khayyyam said the terms of surrender.
Samsun's messenger was finally sent away in a state of confusion.
"My lord, are you going to spare the Seljuks?"
The officers of the Imperial Army are indeed a little puzzled, and now they can win a big victory if they go in.
The Imperial Army will slaughter, annihilate, and kill every living thing they can see in Samsun.
"What I want is to spread fear!"
"Instead of just making Samsun a dead city!"
"The flight of the Seljuks will bring news of the arrival of the Imperial Army."
"Will Arslan still be able to sit still?"
"The poor who cannot afford to pay the ransom will be put to death by us, and the infidels of Samsun will see their fellow citizens shed blood."
"What will the acquittal of the Greeks bring?"
"Kill!"
Khayyam softly spat out a word that sent all the Imperial officers shudder.
Indeed, the Seljuk compatriots were forced to pay ransom and were slaughtered, while the Greeks left freely.
Conflicts between Christians and pagans have always existed.
But the Arabs are civilized, benevolent, and kind, and they even allow Christians to worship together in holy places without any discrimination.
The Seljuks were different, they were savage, murderous, and plundered pilgrims.
Heavy taxation and even rape of the wives and daughters of pilgrim Christians.
The Seljuks caused outrage, and finally the First Crusade took place.
With the cooperation of the Imperial Army, the Seljuks were driven deep into the mountains, and for a time they could only survive.
Now Khayyam is going to stir up the conflict between Christians and pagans once again.
Without the Roma fighting, the empire could not reap.
……
When the city was opened, Rom fell to his knees in Gazi, where he was, and kissed Khayyam's feet.
"My lord, I wish you good health!"
"Ransom?"
"Here, my lord."
Whole boxes of gold were lifted up, and all the soldiers of the Imperial Army saw was a slight gasp, magical magic.
"Soldiers of the Imperial Army, do you see that?"
"Gold!"
"Yours!"
"Hooray!"
The soldiers of the Imperial Army thundered with joy, and the rich Roma who went out of the city trembled, and they hurried away with their luggage for fear of being killed.
"My lord, spare your life!"
"My lord, spare your life!"
Thousands of poor people crowded the city gates, but there was no mercy, the imperial army was firmly entrenched, and no one could flee.
The Seljuk rich and Greeks outside looked at the poor people surrounded by the imperial army with complicated eyes.
"Get on your knees!"
The Imperial soldiers used knives and guns to force the Seljuks, who could not afford to pay the ransom, to their knees.
The panicked crowd was in a commotion, and some wanted to resist, but they were mercilessly stabbed by the Imperial soldiers.
"That's it, look, look, you Seljuks."
"If you want to be resentful, go and resent Arslan!"
"Tell everyone you meet!"
"The Imperial Army will march east along Samsun all the way to Trabzon."
"If your Sultan doesn't come by then, we'll go south to Konya!"
"Kill!"
Recruits from Shishman's Fourth Legion of the Imperial Army were drafted to serve as executioners for the execution.
These recruits from the Fourth Legion of the Imperial Army annoyed Shishman.
Two thousand veterans were assigned and trained, but they had never seen blood.
Although they openly despised the iron cavalry of the Turks, in essence, the commanders of the Imperial Army attached great importance to it.
This is a good opportunity for military training.
The rows were shaved down, the heads were rolling, and the blood was flowing like rivers.
The Seljuks not far away were sobbing lowly, hatred suppressed their hearts, but no one dared to be angry.
"Burn the city!"
This time, the trebuchet was loaded with fire oil, and it was launched rapidly, a magnificent piece of magnificence, reflecting the red sky.
"Let's prepare for the Seljuk army!"
Khayyam smiled at the Imperial officers, and the mission was accomplished.
