Chapter 408: Airborne (2)

The two regiments of the 82nd Airborne Division (505th Regiment and 504th Regiment) are divided into two echelons and are responsible for airborne missions before and after landing.

Similarly, the two brigades of the British 1st Airborne Division (the 1st Parachute Brigade and the 1st Airborne Brigade) were divided into two echelons.

At four o'clock in the morning, the 505th US parachute group in Tripoli set off, with a total of 3,405 people, some of whom flew directly on the C47 transport plane, and some on the CG4 glider towed behind the C47.

This CG4 glider is mainly used to increase the projection capability during parachute landing and enhance the equipment capability of the airborne troops...... IT CAN TRANSPORT 13 HEAVILY ARMED SOLDIERS, OR A MILITARY JEEP AND 7 SOLDIERS, OR A 75MM HOWITZER AND ITS GUNNER TO ITS DESTINATION.

It is conceivable that it can greatly increase the firepower and maneuverability of the airborne troops, and the disadvantage is that the speed of the transport aircraft cannot be higher than 200 kilometers per hour after being towed to the glider.

This was one of the reasons why the Allies had to choose to carry out the airborne landing before dawn, if it was to land with gliders at dawn...... A large number of transport planes with gliders flying at speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour would have been excellent targets for the Luftwaffe.

The Black Pressure group first arrived in Malta, contacted the British 1st Parachute Brigade and the group that took off there, and then rushed to Sicily...... This was primarily to be able to carry out parachuting in Sicily at the same time.

Then, at about 5:10 a.m., British and American airborne planes flew over Sicily.

However, due to the fact that both the British and American airborne troops lacked actual combat experience, and for the sake of the concealment of the campaign, radio silence was practiced from the island of Malta onwards, and because it was a night flight, the two groups of more than 200 transport planes could not maintain their concentration, and the formation was very scattered.

The US fleet could not find the scheduled landing site, so it had to return again and re-enter from the coast in search of a landing site...... In the process, 8 were shot down by anti-aircraft guns of the Italian army, 10 were wounded, and 3 had to return home.

In desperation, the US 505 Airborne Regiment could only forcibly carry out the airborne landing, and as a result, all the airborne regiments were scattered all over Sicily in the dark, and only one company landed at the predetermined location, deviating from the farthest distance of 100 kilometers.

Moreover, because the wind speed reached 15 meters per second at the time of landing, many inexperienced American airborne troops parachuted on stones, woods and houses, and became wounded as soon as they landed.

The situation was even worse with the British 1st Parachute Brigade.

There were 2,578 of them in total, due to the fact that the pilots did not master the altitude well...... The main reason is that the target cannot be seen clearly in the dark, so it can only look for the landing site at a low altitude, and when it finds the landing point, it is found that the distance is too close to raise the high bottom in time, so the glider has to dehook at a low altitude.

As a result of the low-altitude decoupling, the glider had already landed before gliding to the landing site, so 69 of the 137 gliders fell into the sea on the spot, and more than 600 paratroopers on board were drowned, and a large number of heavy equipment fell into the sea.

As a result, the first batch of British and American airborne troops failed to play their role.

And this was not the worst, when the Allies began to land, the second echelon of airborne aircraft groups followed.

At this time, the British and US navies were at a tense moment of covering the landing of ground troops, and these warships took it for granted that the group of planes flying over them was enemy planes that the German and Italian troops had come to bomb and prevent their landing, so they gave an order...... The gunfire of the warships roared in unison, and the group of planes hurriedly and habitually made maneuvers or increased speed, but it was very dangerous for the transport planes towing gliders to do these actions, so many planes collided in the air and caught fire, and the frightened paratroopers jumped into the sea in a panic, and many paratroopers jumped directly into the sea and drowned.

The paratroopers who jumped ashore were also not so lucky, they were either killed by the Italian soldiers who were defending on the shore or were mistakenly killed by their own landing force for the enemy.

In fact, there was no need for the British and American troops to parachute in Sicily...... Because their landing is not difficult at all.

Although five Italian infantry divisions were stationed along the coastline, most of them abandoned their positions and fled when they saw the dense crowd of warships and transports coming out of the sea.

So much so that the only task Rommel gave them was to destroy the port equipment and the bunker fortifications on the high ground, but they did not do it.

This made Rommel can't help but scold Lieutenant General Guzoni: "I have only one request for you, a small request...... It is to be able to destroy the fortifications and then withdraw when the enemy attacks, but you can't complete it! God, I should have let you destroy the fortifications and equipment first! ”

As a result, the port of Syracuse was occupied intact by the British, who captured a landing site 100 kilometers wide and 10 to 15 kilometers deep as soon as they landed.

The inexperienced American troops were much more chaotic than the British, scurrying around the shore like a bunch of headless flies, and many troops could not find their troops because they had landed in the wrong place.

Eventually, however, they managed to capture the landing site, which was 110 kilometers wide and 5 kilometers deep.

"Our landing was a success!" This is a quote from Montgomery when he gets the intel.

Eisenhower, however, did not think so, because the landing force suffered more than 2,000 casualties, and it is inconceivable that most of these casualties were not caused by combat, but by the confusion and accidental injuries of Britain and the United States.

Eisenhower had reason to believe that these casualties could have been avoided had it not been for Montgomery's misguided plan...... Montgomery's overemphasis on the coordinated attack of the two armies, insisting on landing the British and American troops at two adjacent landing sites, while at the same time choosing to launch a surprise attack in the dark of night, would inevitably cause chaos.

"This is likely to be the success of the 'Minced Meat Project'!" Eisenhower said with a hint of displeasure: "The 'Meat Stuffing Project' has allowed us to successfully deceive the enemy and leave them defenseless, all we have to do is go up with our guns!" ”

"Anyway, we landed, didn't we?" Montgomery replied.

"Yes!" Eisenhower ordered: "Now what we have to do is to stabilize our front and accumulate supplies to prepare for tomorrow's offensive!" ”

It was easy for the British to store supplies, they only needed to drive the transport ships into the port of Syracusa and then unload cars, tanks, supplies, etc. to shore.

However, the US military needs to use small landing craft to transport them ashore in batches from transport ships that cannot sail into the coastal waters, and because the speed of material delivery is too slow, several US units have even appeared to loot.

Eventually, however, as the sun set, the troops stabilized and formed a line of defense on the shore.
