Chapter 966: Review

Narrate the review of the Vimala Sutra

The Vimala Sutra is a very interesting scripture, it is not true, it is not enough to describe it, it should be said that this sutra is the real Mahayana Dharma, the Dharma that has been achieved in the worldly Dharma. There are two sutras that have had the greatest impact on Chinese Buddhism, one is the Vimala Sutra and the other is the Lotus Sutra. Later Zen Buddhism and Tantra Buddhism are inseparable from the views of these two sutras.

If you look at the Vimala Sutra as a novel, the order in which it is arranged is also very interesting. At first, Vimala was sick, and the Buddha missed him so much that he wanted to send someone to visit him. None of the big disciples dared to go, this layman was terrible, the big disciples were all scolded by him, everyone was shaved by him, maybe even his head was shaved by him. The great bodhisattvas were also afraid to go, only Manjushri was reluctant to go on behalf of the Buddha, because he was the teacher of the seven Buddhas and had the same status as the Buddha.

Note here that Vimala is sick, and you say that a person who has attained the Tao and has attained the Tao will get sick? This is a serious matter. Studying Buddhism is to think about birth, old age, sickness and death, and as a result, Shakyamuni Buddha, who is a monk, and Buddha Vima, who is at home, neither of them can leave their illness. The story begins with asking about illness, since there is still illness, there is still life and death, this key point must be grasped.

When they arrived at the room the size of the abbot of Vimala, the 32,000 people led by Manjushri actually went in, and then they met and talked about their illness. We need to study, will people who have achieved success in studying Buddhism get sick in this material world? Generally, people who study Buddhism and Taoism, the first purpose is to get rid of illness and prolong life, and you may not admit it verbally, and you don't need to be modest, where is this not the case? And if you want to be supernatural, it's best to go abroad without a plane ticket, most of them have these purposes.

If a person has life in this world, there is a body, and if there is a body, there is birth, old age, sickness and death. To learn Buddhism is to learn liberation, to be free from the shackles of birth, old age, sickness and death. This paragraph of the question is a repeated discussion of this serious issue.

After a long day of discussion, the 32,000 people stood and listened to Manjushri discuss with Vimala, who was half lying on the bed, probably for five or six hours. The Vimal lay man borrowed a seat from another world, and the seat in that world was as high as 84,000 yo. At once, Vimo made 32,000 seats of this size, and when he came to his room, he actually accommodated them all. However, the great arhats among the crowd, including the Venerable Mulian with great powers, could not jump because their seats were too high. Later, Vimal taught them a way and sat down, why? Another talk.

When everyone sat down, they talked about how to cultivate their own minds and deal with their own thoughts and emotions. This is the first step in practice, and the most troublesome thing that everyone feels when they meditate and recite the Buddha is that the mind is not at ease. Vimo explained this question through a dialogue. This paragraph is incredible.

Just as he was talking about the incredible and wonderful place, a celestial maiden appeared in the house of Vimo and scattered smallpox to support everyone. When the flowers fall on the bodies of these arhats, they stick, but when they fall on the bodhisattvas, they don't stick. What does this flower represent? Even though he has attained the status of an arhat, smallpox is still clinging to it, because the root of the habit karma has not been eliminated (this is also the question of bringing karma to rebirth or eliminating karma), and it is still lurking there, so it is not really liberated.

This place is very important, even though we ordinary people study Buddhism and practice, this practice has not moved at all, and it is even heavier, and the self-seeing, seeing, seeing, and so on, is more powerful, and the karma is heavier. It is impossible to succeed without a thorough understanding of this principle.
