Chapter 13: Latent
On July 19, 1940, the Battle of France came to an end.
The last of the French Army's mobile reserves, and by far the largest they have been able to assemble, collided head-on with the Führer's Guards Haydra, the most elite of the German Army's Führers, in a nondescript French town.
The marshals of the Supreme Command of the Third Reich named the battle to crush the last effort of the French Third Republic the "Battle of Twilight", after the most famous "Twilight of the Gods" in Norse mythology.
After dinner, a light rain began to fall in the sky. The rainy season came later than usual, and after two months of clear skies, the first rain of the summer finally came to France.
The rain fell gently from the sky, not only moistening the parched fields, but also sweeping away the dullness of the German soldiers that had been caused by the heat and dryness of more than a month.
The soldiers greeted the first rain of summer with great excitement, laughing and jumping loudly in the misty drizzle, as if they were celebrating some major holiday. More soldiers took off their dusty and sweaty uniforms and enjoyed the rare shower naked.
The officers acquiesced to the soldiers' petty presumptuousness, and they stood by the tent laughing and watching their young men vent their exuberant energy in the rain.
But the situation began to change, the rain began to fall heavier and heavier, and after a while, the drizzle turned into a pouring rain, and under the reflection of the searchlights, the sky and the earth became white, and as the wind increased, the originally refreshing air began to make people feel a chill.
The once parched land could no longer absorb any more water, and some of the trenches were beginning to reach the knees of soldiers. What appeared before their eyes was clearly a summer storm, and the officers began to worry about the safety of their positions.
As the temperature dropped, the soldiers calmed down from the initial excitement and immediately threw themselves into the fight against the storm. Under the command of the officers, the soldiers reinforced the tents and shelters, and the thick tarpaulins also covered the trenches.
A company of soldiers wielded infantry shovels desperately between the trenches, and the makeshift drainage ditches were quickly dug out, and with the cooperation of several pumps, the water in the trenches began to slowly subside.
Over time, a herringbone waterproof tent was erected on top of the trench, and the situation was finally brought under control thanks to the efforts of all the soldiers.
The soldiers on night duty at the positions gathered under the tents, lit piles of bonfires in the damp trenches, baked their soaked uniforms, and the German Army's ponchos were of no use in a rainstorm of this magnitude. The kitchen brought them freshly cooked hot soup to help the soldiers beat the bitter chill of the storm.
The soldiers who were not on duty also got into their dry and warm tents, and the battle that preceded them consumed most of their energy, and many of them fell headlong on their beds as soon as they took off their wet uniforms, and quickly fell asleep.
As the night deepened, the German positions began to slowly fall silent. Except for the occasional sound of the vigilant sentries calling out their commands, all that remained was the rustling of rain falling on the tents. Under the constant flickering searchlights, the green smoke from the campfire and the steam from the damp uniforms slowly rose in those trenches, gathering into a thin mist wafting on this quiet position, and under the background of a snow-white rain curtain, it presented a dreamlike and somewhat bewitching beauty.
In the middle of this, the French team quietly came to the Germans.
The first to spot the French was a small German outpost in a low bush beside the only road leading to the town.
The heavy rain directly affected the German army's ability to observe the front of the position, and even the powerful 5,000-watt searchlight could not penetrate the dense rain curtain. The observation distance of the German army has dropped from the original 3,000 meters to the extent that it can only see things within the first 200 meters of the position, which is very unfavorable to the German ** team on the defensive side. If the French ** team braved this heavy rain to come to them, the Germans would most likely be caught off guard by the other side.
To this end, the forward commander set up more than a dozen concealed observation posts within three kilometers of the position, and their task was to guard against a sneak attack by the French ** team taking advantage of the heavy rain. These soldiers were given the order to report to the command headquarters as soon as they found signs of the appearance of the ** team, so that the ** team could have enough time to prepare for all the preparations before the battle.
The small undercover group consisted of three soldiers, each of whom was equipped with a BMW R75 tricycle equipped with a radio and a G34 machine gun. If the radio station is out of order and cannot be reported to their superiors, they can use the machine gun to report to their own people, and if they are discovered by the French ** team, they can also use the machine gun to return fire.
Every soldier was a precious asset to Germany, and the forward commander carried out this idea of the new Führer thoroughly.
The three soldiers hid their bikes and themselves in the bushes on the side of the road, although they were bushes, they were more than a man tall, and they grew so dense that it was difficult to spot the people lurking inside, even during the day, let alone on such a stormy night.
The three soldiers set up a small tent on the motorcycle out of a large black rubber tarpaulin, making it more difficult for others to spot them in the dark night. The rain didn't seem to stop at all, and the three German soldiers, who were wearing waterproof trench coats for motorists, were still shivering from the cold, and they huddled tightly in this improvised hideaway in anticipation of the dawn.
The night was getting darker, and a wave of fatigue came to the soldiers like a tidal wave, and they were already feeling a little tired from their previous work on the position, and now the cold temperature was rapidly consuming their remaining energy.
The soldiers felt that they could not hold it anymore, and after some discussion, they decided to divide their shifts and rest, Red and Hans leaned on their motorcycles and quickly fell asleep, while the rest of Ralph crouched by the bushes and continued to observe the movement on the road.
But he didn't last long, and before he knew it, Sentry Ralph was squatting and dozing. Just as he was dazed, there was a strange noise in his ears. Ralph looked up blankly, confused as to what it was. But when he could discern what the strange sound was through the rustling of rain around him, the tired German sentry was completely startled.
It was the sound of countless feet on the muddy road, mixed with the slight sound of metal crashing, indicating that a force was marching in the wind and rain on the road just outside the bushes.
"French!"
Ralph let out a scream in his heart, and he carefully brushed aside the two branches in front of him and quietly looked out onto the road.
In the dense rain, a large infantry force was passing by the road in front of him, and the flickering flashlight columns in the team were particularly dazzling in the dark night. As a bolt of lightning streaked across the sky, the blue Adritic steel helmets on the heads of those soldiers shimmered with an eerie glow.
The force had already walked more than halfway, and in the time he had been asleep earlier, Ralph estimated that at least one battalion of soldiers had passed him. But it wasn't too late to find out, and he still had time to report to Command.
Ralph turned slightly, carefully moving slowly towards his motorcycle, trying to make his movements as soft and slow as possible, for fear that any large movement or noise would alarm the Frenchmen outside.
Ralph slowly moved to his motorcycle, and he gently woke up Red, who was sleeping in the body.
"Who!"
Red was awakened in his sleep and instinctively shouted, but that's not all, he grabbed the G34 on the car body in a daze.
"God!"
Ralph was so frightened that he almost had a heart attack, and he quickly covered Red's mouth and grabbed the bolt of the machine gun with his other hand.
"Uh......h Whining. ”
Red tugged desperately at Ralph's hand over his mouth, his eyes full of confusion.
"Damn it...... Be quiet! ”
Ralph desperately lowered his voice and whispered viciously in Red's ear, waiting quietly in his current position, carefully discerning the sound coming from outside the bushes. The footsteps of the French ** team outside continued to march, and it seemed that they were not alarmed by the scream of the idiot in their hands, perhaps the sound of the wind and rain masked Rhett's cry.
Ralph let out a long breath as he let go of his grip on the bolt and made a cross on his chest.
"You almost killed us." Ralph whispered in Red's ear.
"Law...... French? Red also heard footsteps outside the bushes at this time, his face turned white with fright, he now understood that he had almost made a big mistake just now, almost killed himself and his comrades, he asked softly in a trembling voice.
"Yes, a lot of people, it seems that there is a regiment." Ralph whispered.
"Then we must report to Command immediately."
"Yes, I'll go to Cāo for the radio now, and you go and wake Hans up, for God's sake, and don't let him make any more noise."
"Understood." Red replied in a low voice.
Ralph gently walked behind the motorcycle trailer, opened the trunk lid, and plugged in the radio.
"Bird Seven calls the Nest, and Bird Seven calls the Nest." Ralph whispered into the intercom.
"This is the Bird's Nest, Bird Seven, what's going on?" The Command Signal Officer's answer in the headset was clear and loud, but it scared Ralph into a cold sweat.
"Bird's Nest, for God's sake, please don't answer so loudly, there is now a regiment of law ** team passing in front of our sentry post, and they are only five or six meters away from us. This force is moving in the direction of our position, hear it please answer, gently. ”
Ralph whispered a report as he looked around cautiously.
"I heard it, and I immediately reported it to the commander. Good luck. The Nest replied in a whisper.
"Understood, we'll find a way to withdraw it right away. The call is over. ”
Ralph turned off the power on the station, and to his relief, he was relieved that he had completed his mission, and now he was left with the question of how to retreat back to his position without alarming the French.
"How?" Ralph quietly moved to the bushes, his two comrades now nervously watching the Frenchman outside.
"You're almost done, have you got in touch with the above?" Hans whispered.
"I have been contacted, I have already reported the situation here to the above, and I believe that the brothers on the position are already preparing for battle."
"So what do we do now?" Red asked quietly.
"When they're done from here, we'll retreat. You go clean up now, Hans and I are here to keep an eye on them. Don't make any noise. Ralph whispered.
"Understood." Red turned and crawled gently towards the motorcycle.
"When they pass through here, we'll retreat, and we'll have to go around the right side of the position, or we'll run into the French." Ralph whispered to Hans.
"Understood. It looks like this is their last team and we're out of luck. Hans replied with a nod.
As the last group of French soldiers hurried past them, Hans and Ralph relaxed, and they landed on the ground, then chuckled at each other and chuckled. ]
"Alright, let's get back to our positions, or we won't be able to go back until the French have built up a defensive line." Ralph stood up and moved his aching legs.
"You know, my heart is jumping out of my throat, and if the French find out about us, it's really over. Ha ha. Hans replied with a smile.
"Yes, did you notice, before you knew it, the rain seemed to be light, it seems that God is really on our side, haha" Ralph said with a smile.
The rain in the sky was indeed much lighter, and the storm was finally starting to leave the area. Now it's drizzling in the air, and the temperature doesn't seem to be as cold as it was at the beginning.
"Okay, let's go back quickly, this time we have made a meritorious service, I don't know what the reward will be." Red had already packed up the canopy, he said aloud as he sat in the body of his motorcycle.
"Wait a minute!" Ralph suddenly lowered his voice as he made a silent gesture to his two companions, then crouched back to the bushes and quietly looked out.
"What's going on?" Red asked Hans with a look in his eyes, and Hans shook his head and shrugged his shoulders to show that he didn't know.
"The sound of cars!" Ralph turned his head and whispered.
Hans and Red quickly pricked up their ears and listened carefully.
"I didn't hear anything, only the sound of rain." Red looked at Hans quizzically.
"No, there's the sound of a car coming towards us." Hans pulled his 98k rifle from the holster by the car, opened the bolt and checked the chamber before crouching down to Ralph's side with the gun in hand.
"There's only one, it's not a convoy, and it doesn't sound like a truck when you hear the engine." Ralph whispered as he untied his 98k from behind. At this time, the sound of the car engine in the distance was clearly discernible, and as this sound got closer and closer, the pillars of light of the two headlights appeared in their field of vision.
"It's a car." Hans straightened his steel helmet. "Hopefully it will pass soon."
Ralph was checking the chamber of his gun, "I hope so, but don't do anything now."
The sedan was getting closer, and Ralph could even make out the huge Citroën logo and a small triangular flag on the front of the car by the light of the headlights.
"It seems to be an officer, how can there be only this car?" Hans asked in a whisper.
Ralph wiped the rain from his face and said, "It doesn't matter who he is, as long as he gets over quickly, we can go back."
But it just so happened that just as Ralph and the others were expecting the sedan to pass peacefully, the engine of the car suddenly stopped spinning with two crisp pops. The beautiful French saloon, after sliding forward some distance with inertia, came to a halt by the bushes of Ralph and them.
"Damn it!" Ralph and Hans cursed softly.
"Damn it!" The driver of the sedan jumped out of the car, kicked the car's fenders hard, then shook his head and turned to the front of the car to open the hood.
"What did he say?" Hans whispered in Ralph's ear, and Ralph frowned and shook his head.
"Seldwan, what did you find wrong, it's unbelievable, this is the first time the ignition has been turned off today?" At this time, a judicial officer poked his head out of the window of the rear compartment and shouted to the driver.
"Fourth, Lieutenant Colonel, as I said, it's still the damn carburetor problem, and now I can't fix it completely without parts, so I can just make it up. Sir. The driver replied loudly.
"Then you hurry up and deal with it, we are already far behind Colonel Karut's team, and I must hand over the order to Colonel Karut before dawn." The officer shouted.
"Understood, Lieutenant Colonel, I'll do my best." The driver replied from under the hood.
"What are the two of them talking about? Ralph, don't you know a little French? Hans whispered to Ralph.
"I don't understand what they say, I said, I can only speak some simple French." Ralph blushed, and he replied in a whisper.
Ralph did know a little bit of French, but it was something he learned by surprise to meet beautiful French girls when he went to Paris, and at most it was something like "you're so charming, you're beautiful, I love you."
At this moment, the judge sitting in the back of the car suddenly opened the door and jumped out of the car.
"Lieutenant Colonel, you don't have to get out of the car, I'll be able to get it right away." The driver said loudly when he heard the sound of the car door opening.
"I just want to make it easier for you to continue repairing your car." The magistrate replied impatiently, he stretched out a delicate umbrella, and then slowly walked towards the bushes on the side of the road.
He ...... What does he want to do? Ralph, he's coming, did he spot us? Hans asked softly.
"I don't know, it doesn't look like it,"
"He's coming, he's coming. Ralph, what are we going to do, figure it out, Ralph. ”
"Calm down, Hans, calm down, he hasn't seen us yet."
"Let's kill him, there are only two of them, we can get rid of them right away, and then we'll get out of here."
"Calm down, Hans, wait a little longer."
"He's coming, damn it, I'm going to kill him, the driver is over to you."
"Calm down, Hans, wait a minute."
The two German soldiers were biting their ears fiercely in the bushes, and the French officer slowly walked in front of them, and there was only a thin layer of bushes between the two sides, the Germans squatting and the French standing.
The two German soldiers looked at the French officer in front of them dumbfounded, and they were so nervous that they didn't even dare to take a breath. Rhett, on the other hand, sat in the body of his motorcycle, his hands clutching the butt of the G34.
Since the judge was in a relatively bright place, and he did not expect two German soldiers to squat in the bushes, he did not notice the two enemies at hand, he handed the umbrella to his left hand, and then whistled out of tune while unbuttoning his trousers.
"Ralph, he's trying to pee!" Hans couldn't hold back any longer, and he cried out loudly.
"Damn it, you brought it on yourself!" Ralph also stood up at the same time and shouted.
"What!" The two roars that suddenly erupted from behind the bushes really startled the lawyer, and he immediately heard that it was German.
"There are Germans here!" The magistrate shouted loudly, threw the umbrella in his hand out, and slid his other hand to the holster at his waist.
But Ralph only gave him time to shout, and in the next second, the hard butt of the Mauser 98K rifle went through the bushes and smashed into the face of the judge. With a dull crashing sound, mixed with some creepy crisp fractures, the judge immediately fell headlong into the mud on the side of the road.
"Hans, the driver!" Ralph jerked out of the bushes, and he shouted at Hans.
"Leave it to me!" Hans, with his rifle already loaded with bayonets, rushed towards the car parked on the road.
The French driver reacted quickly, and at the same time that the French officer fell to the ground, he already understood what was happening, and now he was rushing from the front of the car to the cab.
"Quick, he's got a gun!"
Ralph picked up his rifle and aimed it at the driver, who decided that if the driver dared to point a gun at his comrade, he would risk revealing his position. But just as the French driver came out of the cab with a rifle, Hans rushed in front of him.
"Don't move, throw the gun away, and come out with your hands up." Hans shouted loudly with a bayonet against the French driver's chest.
"Don't kill me, don't kill me! I surrender, I surrender! The French driver hurriedly threw away the rifle, then raised his hands and shouted loudly.
"Get out of the car, bastard! Get out of the car! Ralph, what the hell is he called! Damn, doesn't he understand German? You, don't know German, German! Do you understand what I'm saying? Hans asked loudly to the driver.
"Virtue ...... German, I will, I understand German, I surrender, don't kill me! The driver said in stiff German, trembling.
"Oh, you know German, that's good, why don't you get out of the car quickly!" Hans cried out loudly.
"I, my feet, can't move, soft, I move, can't!" The driver said anxiously.
"Hell, Ralph, there's a scared guy with weak legs here who looks like he needs our help." Hans turned to Ralph and smiled.
No one expected that the first confrontation between Germany and France in the Battle of Dusk would end without firing a single shot.
